Customer Reviews:
Good practical info.......2007-09-10
It's no wonder this book is in its 5 edition. The info is practical with good examples and explanations of the terms and processes involved in Real Estate Investing. I'm living in Ireland and most of the information and techniques will work here. We just have high stamp duty which adds up to 9% to the cost of property.
This book is well worth the investment!
Excellent Book!.......2007-09-06
After you get past the author's stock market rant, this book is a great resource. It explains the relevent formulas for evaluation of real estate investments, how to obtain the data, and how to compare alternate investments. I have found it takes these aspects of investment a bit further than many of the other real estate books I have purchased. Skipping the stocks rant, I think this is the best book on the subject I have read.
Investing in Real Estate Provides Depth and Insight.......2007-08-05
There is a good reason why five editions of this book have been published. It covers the major topics that most real estate investors need to know about their profession. Many books cover the same ground, but few do it with such depth and insight.
One motivation that I had in when I originally bought this book was to get a clearer understanding of commonly used real estate terms such as Net Operating Income (NOI), Capitalization Rate (R), Value (V), Return on Investment (ROI) and Gross Rent Multiplier( GRM). The book does a good job of both describing these terms, as well as providing numerous example of their use.
As an investor who focuses on fix-up houses, I think the section on buying fix-up houses hits the nail on the head. I like how the authors describe how easy it is to overlook a the potential in a fix-up house, in saying, "Many buyers reject properties too quickly. They walk in , do a quick-take with a pass-through tour, and then say something like, 'Let's get out of here. It's way too dark, the rooms are too small, and ... it has awful burnt-orange shag carpeting in the bedrooms... anyone would be crazy to buy that house. Yes, anyone would be crazy to buy that house - unless, of course, they could buy it at a steep discount , rehab, redecorate and resell it, or perhaps, if in finding a discounted fixer they were able to buy property in a higher-priced neighborhood they could other wise not have afforded. Then these buyers wouldn't be called crazy. They'd be called smart."
Other books that I have found particularly useful are: "How We Made A Million Dollars Recycling Great Old Houses" by Sam Weir and Mary Weir; "Profits in Buying and Renovating Homes" by Lawrence Dworin; and, "Building Wealth One House at a Time: Making it Big on Little Deals" by John W. Schaub.
Terry Sprouse - author of the forthcoming book, "Fix 'em Up, Rent 'em Out: How to Start Your Own House Fix-up and Rental Business in Your Spare Time."
Great resource for newbies.......2007-08-02
This book is easy to read and has great advice and tips. The authors have organized the principles of real estate in a way I could easily understand and encompass.
Another great book I found - Bubble Proof: Real Estate Strategies that Work in any Market by Tonja Demoff has great strategies and a different spin on real estate.
Well written and thorough. Worth every penny. .......2007-07-11
If you know nothing about real estate, this is the book for you. I have read tons of books about real estate. Alot of them are mediocre at best. This one, however, gives you good sound practices in language you can understand!
Buy it new, buy it used - but if you are even pondering investing in real estate, make sure you buy it!

Book Description
Born into the twin shadows of a famous mother and older sister, Lorna Luft was always referred to as Judy Garland's "other daughter." But the little girl who first performed "Jingle Bells" at the tender age of four on stage with her mother was blessed with her own talent, zest for living, and knack for survival. This is the first insider portrait of one of Hollywood's most celebrated families -- and a remarkably intimate and loving chronicle of an astonishing childhood and a struggle to overcome a legacy of fame and self-destructive behavior.
The question follows her to this day: "What's it like to be Dorothy's daughter?" Although by appearances glamorous and at times truly thrilling, growing up as the daughter of Judy Garland and producer Sid Luft was anything but a journey over the rainbow. With unsparing candor, Lorna Luft reveals a rare story of a little girl, her half-sister Liza Minnelli, and baby brother trying desperately to hang on to the mother whose life seemed destined to burn brightly but briefly. A beautiful and brilliant performer, Judy was a warm and funny woman who loved her children unconditionally -- but she was also the victim of a powerful dependence on alcohol and prescription drugs, which eventually claimed her life.
Now her daughter, Lorna, makes an extraordinary journey back into the spiral of love, addiction, pain, and loss that lurked behind a charmed facade. Filled with behind-the-scenes dramas, hilarious untold stories, and little-known details of Garland family life, it is a tribute to Lorna's victory over her own past. The proud mother of two children, she has at last laid the groundwork that enables her to share the tale only she could tell, unveiling the intensely personal side of life as Judy Garland's daughter.
Ultimately a story of forgiveness and hope, of love and its limitations, Me And My Shadows is a deeply moving testament to the healing powers of embracing one's past, facing one's demons, and charting a course of self-love and discovery.
Customer Reviews:
Love this book!.......2007-09-17
This is a great book and being a Judy Garland admirer, nothing about her life would make me not be a fan but it's more refreshing to hear what happened from someone who was there instead of a biographer who "makes up" stories of what he/she has heard.
This is a great book - it's truthful, compassionate and real.
Good read.......2007-05-27
I read Luft's version of her own mothers story. A very good book, told from someone close enough to feel the total pain and agony that the rest of the world felt- only amplified as her daughter.
Luft's book does paint a little fairy tale into the mix, but is a shocking story of watching your mother slip down a long dark slope.
Luft tells about Judy's start in Hollywood which is equally as interesting as the photo's in the book. Luft paints that love story between her mother and father and leaves you feeling his loss for her.
She also explains the relationship between her and sister Liza Minelli.
It's a great boigraphy.
Just Sing, Lorna.......2004-12-13
Judy Garland's "other daughter" Lorna Luft began her professional career with high hopes, a knockout body and a powerhouse voice. That was in the mid-70s. Skip to the late 90s and the parade passed her by. What to do? Join the parade of stars' offspring who never quite made it: Christina Crawford (Joan's brat), Maria Riva (Marlene Dietrich's daughter), B.D. Davis (Bette's ungrateful daughter) et al. Although Luft constantly points out that Judy was a loving mom and several reviews point out that this is no "Mommie Dearest" memoir, it is ironic that Lorna's tome closely resembles the harsh bio of Joan Crawford. The scary "night visits" to the kids' room, the tantrums, drunken rages, nagging and narcissism. There is also the tacit undertone that the raising of children was never the first thing on Garland's mind. Still, Lorna nudges us, Garland wasn't bad, just merely had problems.
Her worst problem, if you know much about Judy, was her penchant for marrying men who worked for her. Her first two husbands, David Rose and Vincente Minnelli, were famous in their own right. After that, Judy married three men with no talent or visible means of support other than being Judy's 24-hr. gofer. Sid Luft was the first of these. Lorna describes her father as a "producer" but the record speaks for itself. To date, Luft has produced two films- a cheapie for Monogram called "Kilroy was Here" and, of course, the wonderful Garland remake of "A Star is Born." Luft was, in fact, an opportunist who lived off of dancer Eleanor Powell, then actress Lynn Bari, and then Judy. One could arguably say that Luft has not earned one dime since 1951 that did not involve the marketing of Judy Garland, even after their divorce and her death. Craftily, Luft impregnated Judy to ensure their marriage. The result was Lorna. So while it is true that Sid Luft was capable of producing sperm, it is quite a stretch to refer to him as a producer. This is merely one fact that Lorna prefers not to address. The saddest issue that Lorna broaches is that her brother Joey was born mentally out-of-kilter because of the drugs her mother took during her pregnancy with him. Lorna
mentions Joey's troubled brain yet claims- presumably with a straight face- that Judy was not to blame because the role of the placenta was not known in 1955! (Lorna does admit that
she hated school and played a lot of hooky. Believe it!)
Much later, Lorna informs us, that a stoned Judy even tried to impale Joey with a knife, too zonked out on speed to recognize her own son. But, if we're still with Lorna, Judy really, REALLY tried her best. That is the schizophrenic nature of Luft's story, page after page. Drug addiction, boozing, screaming knife-throwing rages, totally selfish, irresponsible and over-the-top behavior that makes Courtney Love seem like Shirley Temple... oh, but aside from that, life with Judy was just dandy. So... is Lorna's book to be believed? The question is: does Lorna even believe what she tells us?
Brilliant.......2004-02-11
I loved this book. Although i wasn't really a fan of Judy Garland's (i had only ever seen her in The Wizard of Oz), i was by the time i finished this book. This book is beautifully written, and i thought the mini-series was fantastic. Lorna writes honestly, covering both the good and bad points of Judy's -as well as her own- life. It is particularly sad at times, but there are some happy, joyful memories that Lorna has of her mom. As Lorna once said, 'I didn't know her as a legend, I didn't know her as an icon, all i knew her as was my mother', a mother who loved her children fiercely, even in her final years of addiction. There is no doubt that Judy Garland was a brilliant and gifted performer - and if she had not had the tradgies of being co-dependent on her pills, or if addiction had been more understood - she would still be alive today, instead of being alive only in the memories of her loved ones.
buy it and read it! completely brialliant........2004-01-09
I thought this book was fantastic. All true Judy Garland fans should read this because it is brilliant. Luft seems to tell the whole truth and it does contradict some other books which makes me feel a lot better.
In Anne Edwards book "Judy Garland Biography" it says that L.B. Mayer hated Judy Garland. It says he treated her like rubbish and didn't care about her at all but then in Lufts book it says Mayer loved Judy like a daughter and she never once complained about him. Although Luft probably does exaggerate some of it and she probably can't quite remember everything so she has to do her best, even if its not true, it is still a fantastically detailed review of the ups and downs of Judy's and the family's life.
At one point Luft says that the night of Judys funeral, she was on the balony looking at the stars and she felt her mothers presence. I thought that was lovely and it really touched me. All the things about Judys ghost haunting Liza is absolute rubbish from the press. I don't know how some reporters can be so harsh and not even seem to care. As Lorna said, if her mother was "haunting" Liza, it wasn't "haunting", she was simply trying to comfort her because she is her daughter.
I love Judy Garland and hope wherever she is that she is very happy and has finally found piece.
This book is fantastic and, as I said before, any fan of Judys should read it and if you still come of loving her as much as you did when you started the book, or more, then you are a true fan of a fantastic legend.

Great Story - Fun Read.......2007-07-14
This is a great story! Mattress Mack is an impressive business person and such a positive contributor to his community and society. Gallery Furniture is like no other store in the country. It is truly a must see experience.
No that great.......2003-11-14
Mac is just another rich jerk with an inflated ego. He got rich by employing young pushy kids who won't leave you alone until you buy something or leave. If you decide to buy, his sales rats try to push you to not buy with cash, but instead apply for credit (with super high interest)from Gallery. This just lines Mac's pockets even thicker. What's the big secret? There's not one. He does sell quality furniture, but it's not cheap like his ads claim. His motto is "Gallery Furniture Really Will Save You Money! I save myself money and a major headache by not shopping there anymore.
By the way, Mac lost millions on bad investment deals like the Sam Houston Race Park. Then cried about it like a little girl.
He's a sore loser in my opinion.
For those who would think big in their own businesses.......2002-07-08
A Texas entrepreneur who produced the most productive singlesite retail furniture store in America, Jim McIngvale is justifably known as 'Mattress Mack'. By promising - and delivering - extraordinary service and thinking big about the future, McIngvale built his empire. Always Think Big incorporates the basics of his approach for those who would think big in their own businesses.
A "must-read" for investors and successful entrepreneurs.......2002-05-29
"Always Think Big--How Mattress Mack's Uncompromising Attitude Built the Biggest Single Retail Store in America" provides a fascinating, well-written account of Mattress Mack's rise from penniless salesman to multi-millionaire businessman and philanthropist. Mack's combination of attitude, perseverance, and successful marketing techniques have made him a legend in Houston, but "His "Treat Everyone Like a Movie Star" techniques are valuable in any location or arena: small businesses, large corporations, schools, government, charitable organizations.
Book Description
With a foreword by Elizabeth Martinez, Roots of Justice recaptures some of the nearly forgotten histories of communities of color. These are the stories of people who fought back against exploitation and injustice--and won. From the Zoot Suiters who refused to put up with abuse at the hands of the Navy, to the women who organized the welfare rights movement of the 1970s, Roots of Justice shows how, through organizing, ordinary people have made extraordinary contributions to change society.

Book Description
In the Lion's Mouth tells the dramatic story of Gisi Fleischmann, the middle-aged widow who headed the Jewish relief and rescue efforts in Slovakia during the Holocaust.
Frantic to stop deportations from their country and to save Jews throughout Europe, Gisi and her colleagues daringly explored a controversial question: Was it possible to bargain with the Nazi's for lives?
Customer Reviews:
Well-researched history.......2000-12-09
Gisi Fleischmann's pre-Holocaust life was unexceptional, but the woman, it turned out, was not. Strong both in moral principle and in determination to act, effective both as an inspiration to others and as a doer, Fleischmann set her whole being to the task of saving Jewish lives--in exchange, inevitably, for her own. The story of her activities and those of her Slovakian colleagues has been kept alive in memory through the exhaustive research of Joan Campion. Based on archival materials and on interviews with surviving family members and friends, the book describes the real-life nightmare in a way that is the more disturbing for being low-keyed. Our only consolation is our recognition that here was a heroine.
Notes, bibliography, archival and interview sources, and index are included.
Individuals matter.......2000-10-27
There are a hundred ways to tell the story of the Holocaust. Books have been written on the history, sociology, psychology and political conditions that contributed to the Nazi efforts to exterminate the Jews of Europe. The most moving books on the Holocaust, however, often concentrate on the fate of a family or an individual. "The Diary of Anne Frank" comes immediately to mind. Joan Campion has chosen that personal approach to tell the story of Gisi Fleischmann and her efforts to save Slovakian Jews. The resulting book brings back to life a strong, courageous woman. She appears to have been quite an ordinary woman who showed great bravery and intelligence in dealing with extraordinary challenges. In their efforts to destroy millions of innocent people, the Nazis also destroyed potential. We can never know what art, music, literature and scientific discoveries were lost in the death camps. But thanks to Joan Campion, another of Hitler's victims will be remembered, and he is denied another posthumous victory.
A Woman Who Made a Difference.......2000-10-19
Over the years, when friends and I have discussed the Holocaust and the way in which the courageous acts of certain individuals made a difference in thousands of lives, names such as that of Raoul Wallenberg would inevitably be mentioned. I would bring up the name Gisi Fleischmann, because I had had the good fortune to read "In the Lion's Mouth," and to learn of her all-but-unknown efforts to call international attention to the plight of Slovakian Jews in the latter years of World War II.
Joan Campion's fluid narrative deftly guides the reader through the series of audacious negotiations and plans undertaken by Fleischmann and her colleagues to stave off the impending "Final Solution." The story's drama is heightened by Fleischmann's devotion to the work of saving as many people as possible- especially children -while being torn with anxiety for the safety of her own family.
There are people still living to whom Gisi Fleischmann did, indeed, make a difference. How wonderful that, thanks to Campion's efforts, her story is once again available in a world language!
