Enjoy getting lost and vague reviews? Then this book is for you!.......2007-10-16
Ugh! Where to begin? I went on a three week tour of Santiago & Buenos Aires with a friend of mine last month. I brought this book and he brought Lonely Planet's and let's just say my book ended up slowing us down as we lugged it around in out daybags. To start, this book only has ONE map each for Santiago and BA. And that map isn't even in great detail. Where as LP's book had a much larger general map of Santiago followed by many more zoomed in maps of each burrow.
But you might be thinking to yourself, "So what, I'm a good navigator, I don't need a stinking map!" Well then good day to you, fine sir! But do you need suggestions and reviews on local sightseeing stops? Oh! So sorry! Because this book doesn't have any of those! I should clarify, they actually do have some suggestions and recommendations, but they tend to be along the lines of "Go here, it's fun" and that's it. No real info on what you'll do once you get there, no honest review as to whether it's good or not. Just a location, phone number, and a sentence or two saying "This is a local 'whatever' and it's a popular tourist spot." Gee, THANKS FROMMER'S! I felt like I was reading a Yellow Pages, not a travel guide.
Even the restaurant suggestions were sub-par compared to their LP counterparts. I'd never used either travel guides before this trip, but I learned my lesson during this last trip and will never be buying one of Frommer's Travel books in the future. If you enjoy stress-free vacations and not wasting money, then I suggest you live by the same motto.

Frommer's covers well information about expensive hotels and restaurants. It is not very helpful if you are looking for cheap travel lodging and meals.

The book contains lots of general information and provides a thorough overview of Argentian. The Buenos Aires description and maps should be helpful when there. Tips and Side Trips are really informative and helpful.

It is a good book with useful information to plan the trip. However, double check prices published in this book (need update) when you are in Argentina or Chile.

I highly recommend this book. It gives thorough and strait-forward information on every aspect of fixed-income investment vehicles. This is a great way to learn about this market if one is new to it.
A Must Have.......2004-10-10
As a former techie who found his way to the wonderful world of supporting a fixed income desk, I found this book to be an excellent overview of the bond market. The author explains complex concepts such as duration and yield in terms that anyone can understand. This is by far the best introductory book to the bond market I have read (and I have read many)!

In this very good beginner's guide to the bond market, author Michael V. Brandes addresses all of the fundamental questions clearly and concisely. Bond math can be daunting, but while the author includes a few equations for illustrative purposes, he clearly addresses his book to the general run of individual investors. The book, which has moments of surprising good humor, says right off the bat that bond investing can be dull in comparison to stock investing, not because the stakes are lower, but because the elements of personality and surprise are considerably more muted in the debt market than in the equity markets. We highly recommend this book, even though it is pedantic at times - a risk you take when you venture into the complex realm of bond investing.
A Great Book on Bonds.......2003-10-23
I read the Motley Fool Investment Guide and really liked it, so when I saw this at the bookstore with Tom Gardner's endorsement on it, I thought I'd give it a shot. Just like the Fools, this book is written for regular people and is pretty humorous (for an investment book!). The chapters are well organized so that you learn about bonds "step-by-step". It includes discussions about every type of bond and advice on how to put them into your
portfolio. It's definitely not written like a textbook -- even the complicated concepts come across clearly. In short, this is a great book. I found it easy to understand and, most importantly, full of extremely useful information.

I was not expecting to gain this much insight on the topic of bonds and investing but am delighted to have picked this book up and savoured it to the last page in the course of one plane ride!

Editor Stephen D. Price must have done a phenomenal amount of work compiling this wonderful collection of more than 300 pages of horse-related quotes. The selected quotations cover all imaginable aspects of the horse world, and are divided into eight categories: Horses in Literature, Riding and Training, Out of the West, A Shakespearean Interlude, Racing - The Sport of Kings, A Pack of Hunting Quotations, Horse Laughs, and Horse Truths. Length varies from simple one-liners to several paragraphs or entire poems.
Included among those people quoted are such notables as Rudyard Kipling, Leon Trotsky, Benjamin Franklin, Dante, Virgil, Walt Whitman, Geoffrey Chaucer, Charles Dickens, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, J.D. My only criticism is that I'd like to see short explanations for some of the more obscure quotes that use antiquated terms or expressions that aren't always familiar to people of today. Other than that, this is a wonderful compilation that I would highly recommend.

Pocketbook reminder .......2006-08-31
A small `pocket' sized book which deals mainly with color themes. It has some nice photos of a variety of different dried flower creations which can be used for inspiration or you can attempt to copy them. There are no directions for their creation only a few tips hidden in the text about how to group items and suggested ideas for your creations. I would not recommend this book for a beginner as it gives little practical how to information. However as a small book to slip in your pocket for inspiration or to give someone an idea of a design it might be useful.

More than 600 books have been written about Marilyn Monroe since her death in 1962. While most of them have focused on the theories surrounding her apparent suicide at age 36, author Gary Vitacco-Robles focuses his new book on the actress' last home. Cursum Perficio: Marilyn Monroe's Brentwood Hacienda/The Story of Her Final Months reframes and redefines Marilyn through the context of her efforts to establish a secure home following a childhood spent in a succession of foster homes. The author theorizes that the actress was trying to correct her past by putting down roots of her own. While several previous authors depict her final months as tumultuous, Vitacco-Robles provides evidence that suggests Marilyn was trying to pull her life together and give it some personal meaning. During the spring and summer of 1962, Marilyn embraced her newfound domesticity by pulling weeds in her garden, writing recipes in her copy of The Joy of Cooking and actually using the pots and pans in her kitchen. The book contains actual photographs of the house, interspersed with realistic renderings of the home by artist Brandon Heidrick. The author divides the photos and illustrations with floor plans for each room and includes pictures of an architectural model that depicts the entire property as it appeared in 1962. After she purchased the 2,300 square foot house, Monroe began extensively researching authentic Mexican design, landscaping and furnishings in an effort to slowly transform it into the home of her dreams. She arranged for an 11-day trip to Mexico where she painstakingly selected fabrics, tapestries, painted tiles, pottery and art. Monroe met the native artists who had made by hand the objects that she would later display in her home. Vitacco-Robles is donating a portion of the royalties from sales of this book to Hollygrove Children and Family Services, formerly the Los Angeles Orphans Home Society, where Marilyn Monroe lived as a child.

When I first received my copy of Cursum Perficio: Marilyn's Brentwood Hacienda, I wasn't sure what to expect. Much to my surprise, I was enthralled and fascinated by the details of Marilyn's final months, so eloquently chronicled by Gary Vitacco-Robles. Void of any media hype and speculation about the cause of her death, Vitacco-Robles explores how Marilyn searched and found the perfect place to call home...a respite from the choatic life she led in the media spotlight.
You will journey with her as she went on shopping sprees for furnishings and ornaments in a quest to make the only home she ever owned a reflection of herself.
The book contains a vast collection of actual photographs, as well as impressive photo-recreations of the home's interior as it looked in 1962 and now.
I applaud Vitacco-Robles for a superb testamant to the woman so many longed to know. This book reveals a whole other side of Marilyn that has never been revealed.
A MUST HAVE for any Marilyn enthusiast!

According to the publisher, Iuniverse, the hardcover edition offered here is actually a "second edition" released in October 2003, although the release date printed is still listed as 2000. This is because it is a "re-do" under the same title previously released by the publisher. The new second edition cover for the paperback and hardcover depicts Marilyn standing beside the gates of her home and sell respectively for $20.95 and $30.95. The first edition was only published in paperback with a different cover for $11.95. The publisher says that vendors will continue to sell the first edition paperbacks until supplies depleted. The second edition contains new images, new chapters, re-worked chapters and information not included in the first. Having seen this book, the quality of photo reproduction in this new version are far superior than in the first. It also includes professional, "photorealistic-style" illustrations by artist Brandon Heidrick depicting the interior and exterior of Marilyn's home and furnishings. The images serve as a "virtual tour" of Marilyn's last home similar to the author's website.

a lovely book........2003-10-23
I bought the book after stumbling across the author's web-site and finding myself riveted by every page of the site. I am regretting not having splurged and bought the hardcover edition as I'm sure the colour pictures are wonderful. As it stands, the paperback version could use some better editing but the story is warm and always respectful. I really recommend it to anyone who is fascinated by the charm of Marilyn, but is sick of the sensationalism.
