Customer Reviews:
Great regional travel planner - experienced or not.......2004-08-13
In the past 2 years I have been on the road for over 1 year. Most recently returning from a 7 month trip which included Australia, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, India, Nepal, UAE, and Qatar among others.
I used this guide as a general planning tool. Such as correlating the maps with the weather charts provided. As well as utilizing the helpful regional travel tips and anecdotes provided. One of them I read while in India gave me a good laugh and perspective when I needed it most! Every region has its own idiosyncracies - once mastered or "internalized," travel only gets easier - it is nice to have alot of them described in one place.
While certainly not a detailed guide (No specific lodging, food, or city maps) it provided me just the right level of information to help me determine where I wanted to go, how to get to and from those points (quick border info) and roughly how much time I wanted to spend there via the sample itineraries. The maps are colorful and excellent, they include different colors showing the sample itineraries which are based on trips of different time lengths (1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month, etc...) and little flags indicating land border checkpoints. Paper quality is also nice and glossy.
I will return to this region again. Next time I will travel with few if any pre-bought air tickets (I was on a One World world trip ticket). This guide should be even more useful then. I generally don't like the huge regional guides (Like Shoestring), instead opting for specific country guidebooks. (Although I will note that Southeast Asia by Mark Elliott for Trailblazer Publications is an excellent guidebook using a very innovative map system instead of text)
While I used specific guidebooks for most of these countries (Not all LP I'll add), as a "1 stop shop/read" in a compact format the LP RTF series is unbeatable in my opinion. Like taking it to a cafe to high level plan the next few weeks of travel! Also using it before one might have the opportunity to buy a guidebook for the next country (Especially applicable for longer term travelers).
Another useful feature of the book is the chart showing all the countries listed in the region and whether a visa is required (For US, UK, Aus citizens) and the length of stay allowed.
For the real adventurous this might be the only guide one needs to BRING TO the region. Confidence in travelling "lite and harder" and/or picking up guidebooks / tourist pamphlets / searching out internet sites on the way would be recommended.
Great book, if used the right way. If you are only planning on going to a single country, then I wouldn't bother with this book. But, if you are planning a multi-country trip (And don't care for the big, thick, small print regional guides), or just need a better idea of where to spend your time in the region - this could be a book for you. Useful as a pre-trip planner that stays at home when you leave, or used during a long multi-month trip.
not very detailed but still useful........2004-01-05
This book is not very detailed but is still useful asa pre-departure guide. it has 2 main sections. the first part ha basic travel information such as packing , getting around, hostels and transportation.
The second, more useful section comprises of country information. for the 21 countries covered there is a map and to 4 pages of text for each country with background country information. details on visa requirements, expected costs, other resources ( books, film, internet). The most useful aspect is the suggested itenarys by country. suggested travel itenarys are provided for each country for various durations, 3 days, 1 week , 2 weeks and a month. these are also marked out on the map to give the reader an idea of how much travel is involved.
This book is useful to those considering a Asian trip as it can help one find the places they may want to visit. It would be of little use to anyone in Asia as there are no local maps or details on where to stay, eat and drink.
The Lonely Planet India guide and Spouth East Asia on a Shoestring guide would be a good companions to this book. use this book in your planning stages then use the regionalal guide in your travels
As with all LP guides it has many interesting first person anecdotes that make interesting reading.
Too general and simplistic.......2002-08-09
This could be useful if you've never traveled before in your life, but it's a bit too simplistic to be of use to anyone else. More than half of the book is "general" content, basics such as how to pack and eating precautions, that really doesn't apply to any more to Asia & India than to anywhere else in the developing world. There was only 4 or 5 pages on every country, and most of the information was trivial. There was less than a page about what there is to see and do that is unique or interesting in a given country. Most of it was taken up by things like visa requirements, which are useless, because you'll have to check with the embassies anyway to make sure there hasn't been a change. There are a few suggested itineraries for each country (a line on a map), but they are useless because they don't even give a one-sentence description of what why a particular city is of interest.
This book is for you if you want to know about "how to travel", but it's not very useful as a tool for planning your itinerary for a pan-Asian trip. For that Lonely Planet will make you buy the guidebook for every single country you are considering visiting before giving you an idea of whether or not you want to go to that place
a must read before trekking off to asia.......2000-12-07
no, this is not a travel guide. it does not give listings and directions for sights, food, and lodging. it is a practical guide for backpackers (and other independent travelers) heading off to asia. this guide lists visa requirements for all of the asian nations (for visitors from many countries), gives suggestions on routes throughout asia, generalizations about transport, lodging, and meals, recommendations on what to take, and insights on what to expect. it is a very useful tool, packed with necessary information. you could leave for asia without it onhand, but do not leave for asia before reading it.
Helpful in planning a trip.......2000-04-29
I found this book very helpful in planning my trip to Asia. While I wouldn't use this book on my trip, it got me focused on what to think about when getting ready to go and deciding how I wanted to divide my time in such a large region.

Customer Reviews:
Bottom Line for Small Business.......2007-07-02
Barbara Weltman's "Small Business Taxes 2007," is the best guide for charting your way through the record keeping, profit and loss statements, tax credits, deductions, depreciation & amortization, and cost of goods sold around for the person who files a Schedule C form with their 1040 IRS tax form.
The examples are clear, even though some have more 0's than a real small business person can imagine. She doesn't offer any gimmicks, make any promises or come-ons. Her work is straight forward, this is the Code, if it applies to your business you may use it. Readers appreciate the lack of hype which millions of Americans have learned to mistrust.
With any small business not everything applies to each individual -- this book is excellent for locating answers to the tough questions.
We did have some fun with the subtitle (JK Lasser's New Rules for Small Business Taxes) that taken at face value would read Lasser is making the rules not the IRS. But then with taxes a little humor is appreciated.
We used this volume extensively for our book and found the index very helpful in locating the material we needed and desired, when there really isn't much out there for so small a segment of the tax paying population.
Nash Black, author of "Taxes, Stumbling Blocks & Pitfalls for Authors 2007."

Customer Reviews:
Not really updated for 2006.......2007-01-15
I was disappointed to find this was really a 2005 book with a 2006 cover. While I found much of what I needed to know, I had to visit the IRS website for current 2006 limits on depreciation.
Very informative........2006-11-03
JK Lasser's Small Business Taxes 2006 gives the reader a comprehensive overview of what a small business owner needs to know about how to organize expenses into deductions, and what the different rules are for different types of business entities. We were particularly interested in understanding how LLCs were taxed. Since you can tax an LLC as a sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation or S-corporation (based on your particular LLC characteristics), the fact that the book covers how each of these tax scenarios works was very useful in helping us decide which status was more convenient for our business.
Wow - this book has saved me thousands!.......2006-07-01
Great book, nice level of detail. Mix this with QuickBooks and you have most of your small business financials covered.
Very Helpful Book.......2006-03-25
I found the information in this book to be very helpful. She really covers all the bases. great resource and highly recommended
Very concise - but it did not help me.........2006-03-10
This book gave me a good introduction to the issues, but also made it clear that I would not manage without solid advice from a tax consultant - maybe even a tax lawywer - on some of the issues that I had in my business. Maybe there is no simple way to do your taxes today?

Translates the rules into language you can understand........2004-02-25
I have used this book for years to keep me current on the tax laws that are important to small business owners. The numerous law changes that have occurred over the past three years have been difficult to keep pace with but Ms. Weltman's book has been revised to include these changes. It is organized in a logical manner and includes good examples that help illustrate the way the law is applied by the IRS.
I am also a fan of her newsletter and website. Both excellent sources of good tips and necessary reminders.
Good reference for small businesses.......2004-02-23
This is a very good book for those responsible for small business accounting. I originally gave it only 2 stars because my copy of this book was missing 32 pages (pages 401-432). However, when I emailed the publisher, they quickly sent me a complete copy and I am now very happy. I have purchased a variety of small business accounting books over the years but this is the first one that adequately dealt with accounting issues related to taxes. There were several issues that I needed clarification and this book covered all of them.

Customer Reviews:
Lots of errors.......2004-04-08
I can not recommend this book. There are entirely too many errors, in addition the quality of the photography is very poor.
I Think the Editor Fell Asleep..........2000-08-24
Overall, I enjoyed this book as an informative, relatively concise primer on military and civilian sporting rifles. Most of the well known rifles of the twentieth century as well as some of the more famous rifles of the late eighteenth century are covered here, with a wealth of information, pictures and history of each rifle's development.
As a collector of WW2-era military rifles, I was happy to see many of the rifles famliar to me covered in this book. Arisakas, Mausers, Mosin-Nagants, Springfields, Enfields, and Garands are all in here, as well as some of the more modern designs, such as the M16 series, and the famous (infamous?) AK-47 family. Also, some really classic rifles like the Winchester Model 1894 are covered in detail. The author also has pictures of the targets he shot with each rifle, commenting on its accuracy and operation.
My main problem with this book is that small details are overlooked. While not taking away from the overall usefulness of this book, I felt that I should point them out nevertheless. For instance, in the section for the M-1 carbine, the heading for the technical specs box reads "M14 specifications", instead of M-1 Carbine specifications. This oversight was repeated several times in the book. Also, the SVT-40, of which I am an owner, has a 20-round magazine according to the book, when everyone familiar with this rifle well knows that it only has a ten-rounder. Again, small details, but enough for me to take away one star.

Book Description
This year, 1998 marks the thirtieth anniversary of Funny Girl, Barbra Streisand's sensational first movie. To celebrate her plunge into world prominence and popularity, we give you The Ultimate Barbra. This book is an intriguing compilation of information and lore about this multi-talented and phenomenal star, with a special presentation of the people, places, and events of her headline-making life and career to date.
The Ultimate Barbra is a unique, comprehensive volume and is unlike any other book to date on Ms. Streisand. It is an entertaining, bold compendium of test-your-knowledge quizzes, lists, directories of people and places, chronologies, trivia challenges, special appendices (including bibliographies, Web sites and fan club listings), and more. All aspects of her phenomenal talent are covered: her career on stage, film, TV, and in the recording studios; her love life which has ranged from Elvis Presley to Elliott Gould to Canadian prime minister Pierre Trudeau to Don Johnson to current husband James Brolin, being a mother, and her offstage activities in the arenas of philanthropy, politics, and environmentalism.
This book is an informative and clever look at the richly textured life and career of the superstar who offends almost as many people as she delights. Readers and fans may be familiar with the details of her much-chronicled life, but they have not seen them presented in such an unusual and intriguing way as offered in The Ultimate Barbra.
Customer Reviews:
BARBRA AT HER FINEST!.......2002-01-30
Barbra is a charasmatic lady with a magical voice that stays with you long after the song has ended. In this book, readers will find a very in-depth account of her career, love life, dreams, expectations, tribulations and achievements. Barbra has had some very infamous men by her side. I clearly remember her visit to my home province, Prince Edward Island, many years ago on the arm of our now deceased, former prime minister, Pierre Trudeau; they made a stunning couple. When the public showed up to welcome her, she was cold, stand-offish and seemed truly elated to be putting herself on her own pedestal far above the public and her fans. Maybe she was having a bad day? However, as an actress and singer, she has certainly made in mark in this world.
There is a side to Barbra that is funny, witty and a side that appears cold and distant. The author tends to reveal only her positive nature, and I guess if someone was to write a book about us that is the side we would want to be revealed. In any event, Barbra is who she is and when her it comes to her musical career, most will agree she is a tremendously talented lady.
the title says it all.......2000-03-29
I guess the problem with books about celebrities is that they always have a bias. I mean, writing a book is an enormous undertaking, so for someone to write a book about Barbra they realistically have to love her a lot or hate her a lot. Mr. Cunningham, it seems, neither loves Barbra nor hates her, he writes objectively not for himself, but for the rest of the world who very definitely has an opinion of her. I myself LOVE her. I don't know how to say it, but Mr. Cunningham has certainly helped me. He distilled her life into fewer than 300 pages. I could almost formulate an admiration for her that has taken more than thirty years to create just by reading this book.

Faerie Folklore of a Shadowy Ireland of Celtic Mysteries !.......2005-05-03
In Celtic Twilight, originally published in 1902, Yeats recites several accounts of encounters with the faerie folk and with the people of Ireland of the time which gives us insight into Irish folklore, myth and legend.
Yeats associates poetry with religious ideas and sentiment. And, I believe that he saw himself as writing for Ireland, but a shadowy Ireland of Celtic mysteries and legends, not the Ireland of the modern day. By modern day, of course, I relate this to the modern day of Yeats in the late 1890s and early 1900s.
In the introduction to Celtic Twilight Yeats states; "I have therefore written down accurately and candidly much that I have heard and seen, and, except by way of commentary, nothing that I have merely imagined. I have, however, been at no pains to separate my own beliefs from those of the peasantry, but have rather let my men and women, dhouls and faeries, go their way unoffended or defended by any argument of mine."
I got the strong impression from reading Celtic Twilight that Yeats actually believed in the existence of the faeries. Not just as some myth or legend, but as actual beings that exist in this world, though perhaps unseen by the common man. He wrote each story as if it was something that actually happened, having been related to him by the storyteller, or perhaps that which he had seen for himself in some past time, now recalled as he set pen to paper.
There is a depth to Yeats' writing that lies just below the surface, something that's perceived more than seen. The idea that perhaps magic and the faerie folk are alive in the world of today, but unseen, or perhaps only seen from time to time as a fleeting shadow until one knows just where to look.
It is interesting to note that Yeats was heavily involved in occult studies and practices as part of the Madame Helene Blavatsky's,Theosophical Society and later, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, and finally in 1912 the Ordo Templi Orientis.
This would have certainly influenced his outlook on life and his belief in, and dare we say ability to see the unseen things of this world.
I too ask myself from time to time; just what unseen things exist in this world. Perhaps Yeats has seen that which other men can only hope for, or that which they turn away from in dread given the course of their spirits.
Yeats also makes a profound observation: "The things a man has heard and seen are threads of life, and if he pull them carefully from the confused distaff of memory, any who will can weave them into whatever garments of belief please them best."
I found Yeats' observation of particular interest, especially when it comes to theological or philosophical thought. If it is those things that we hear and see in life that forms the fabric of our beliefs, then surely we must take care that that which we see and hear forms strong enough threads so that the fabric we weave is not shoddy.
Yeats' works help us build those strong threads in our lives. For, he certainly influenced the world at large with his writings. In 1923 Yeats was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, and in 1934 he shared the Gothenburg Prize for Poetry with Rudyard Kipling.

Book Description
William Butler Yeats was a poet a mystic an initiate of the Golden Dawn-arguably the most influential esoteric order in the Western magical tradition. In he returns to his roots in Irish folklore to call up a dazzling array of sorcerers, faeries, ghosts, and nature spirits. The result is an enchanting tribute to the visionary heart of Irish folk tradition-and the memory of the poet who would not let it die.

Dream Time.......2003-04-05
This is an essential read for any Yeats fan. It shows his will to believe at its most naked, before the gyres and slouching Sphinxes forged it into System. You can see Yeats mapping the wistful melancholy of his early poems onto the village folklore around his family home in Sligo--already in 1893, he's looking for a way to weld his personal interests in aestheticism and the occult to a wider national cause. You'll also find the seeds of the older proto-Fascist Yeats in his worship of lineage, parochial peasant wisdom and anti-modernism (the faery folk, along with the Great Anglo-Irish houses, have sadly for Yeats all but disappeared). The dreamy villagers he meets with turn back the clock against "that decadence we call progress" in a way that the poet at 28 already finds powerfully attractive.
Most of Yeats's early poems can be linked to a vignette from "The Celtic Twilight," while recurring motifs from his later writings--beauty, passionate old age, ghosts--take on a deeper resonance after reading these lighter pieces. Yeats walks a fine line between believing in the faeries that so many of the peasants he talks to can see, and regarding them simply as "dramatizations of our moods," an example of the tragic Celtic taste for unreachable beauty that he wanted to capture in his poems. Yeats walked that line in one form or another his whole life, and I understood the poems much better after reading these sketches--for that alone, this book's worth a read.
Book Description
The Celts believed that the period between day and night—the Twilight Hour—was a perilous time, when one’s earthly spirit might cross over into a supernatural world. In this gorgeous volume, Simon Marsden, a master of eerily beautiful photographs, has interspersed his own work with selections from Celtic writing as well as the imaginative works of Robert Louis Stevenson, Arthur Conan Doyle, Bram Stoker, Edgar Allan Poe, and others. There are also real-life contemporary ghost stories, reminding us of the dark terrors that still haunt the present.

She met the spirit a third time in the bogeen. She asked what kept it from its rest. The spirit said that its children must be taken from the workhouse, for none of its relations were ever there before, and that three masses were to be said for the repose of its soul. "If my husband does not believe you," she said, "show him that," and touched Mrs. Kelly's wrist with three fingers. The places where they touched swelled up and blackened. She then vanished. For a time Montgomery would not believe that his wife had appeared: "she would not show herself to Mrs. Kelly," he said--"she with respectable people to appear to."

Inspired Prose.......2006-01-28
I had heard of William Butler Yeats, and I must say he is quite an excellent poet. The dreams I had of the old worlds came to life in this.
An Excellent Guide to Understanding Yeats' Early Poetry.......2001-01-28
When Robert Frost (A not very likable fellow, when you read his biographies, despite his excellent poetry.) visited Yeats in Ireland, he made a comment to the effect that, "It's no wonder he believes in faeries." He was responding to the beautiful, mystical Irish landscape Yeats grew up in. This book, even though you're (probably) not in Ireland when you read it, will have you responding much as Frost did. The peasantry have so much of their pagan ancestry in their blood that, despite their ostensible Catholicism, their deep belief in "the little people" comes out as strong as ever when questioned about it. Reading these anecdotes, some of them grafted directly onto Yeats' early poetry, gives them a power they would not have had you not read this book and realized how "here and now" faeryland was to the common people at the time. The Celtic belief that death (into Faeryland)is far more desirable than birth is made beautifully apparent in this book. Hence, by the way, the celebratory Irish wake. Hence also this lovely poem
Heardst thou not sweet words among That Heaven-resounding minstrelsy? Heardst thou not that those who die Awake in a world of ecstacy? That love, when limbs are interwoven, And sleep when the night of life is cloven, And thought, to the world's dim boudaries clinging, And music, when one beloved is singing, Is death?
These sorts of things, as well as Yeats' poetry, are worth deep consideration in this present world where medicine is deemed omnipotent...and yet, nevertheless, we all die.
