Excellent if..........2007-05-12
An excellent book if you are a financial planner. It gives you all the ammunition you need to handle the objections of your prospective clients. I am not too sure that it would convince prospects that working with an advisor is the best thing to do even though it is.
Every Investor Should Read This Book.......2002-10-15
Like every book by Nick Murray, this book is excellent. As a financial advisor, this is one book that I would certainly give to every one of my clients and recommend to anyone else, but not for the reasons given in the previous review.
Statistics show the the average mutual fund investor consistently underperforms the mutual funds that he or she owns. Why? Because they sell AFTER the fund has dropped 10% and buy back in AFTER the fund has risen 10%. After five years, the fund has delivered 10% average annual returns, yet the investor has achieved only 5-7% average annual returns (or worse). Murray correctly believes that the secret to long-term investment success lies in the investor's behavior, not in his ability to pick the best stocks or mutual funds. In this, and every other book by Nick Murray, he teaches investors how to fight their emotions and look beyond short-term performance to become better long-term investors. He preaches about the wisdom of dollar cost averaging and about buying stocks when they are "on sale."
Murray also supports his bias toward equities with a clear, concise explanation of the "real" risks that every investor faces. Every investor will get something out of this book.
Must read for clients of financial advisors!!!.......2000-08-31
This book, simply and conveniently, describes necessary investor behavior to accumulate wealth. This is a great book for financial advisors to send their clients and prospects to easily explain the "trick" to wealth accumulation and preservation. Some of the concepts and charts clearly illustrate what most of us try, sometimes in vain, to educate our clients about. Excellent tool for financial advisors. I highly recommend this!!!
Excellent Investment Book.......2000-07-11
Nick Murray does a great job of explaining the concept of investing in mutual funds to creatate wealth. This book is simple and easy to read, a great book for a beginner. The internet has made investing very complex, Nick Murray has made the process simple.
Simple Plan, Great Advice.......2000-03-25
As the name implies, creating wealth truly is simple, and inevitable, if you stick with a plan. This book gives novice investors a guideline for how to get started and to create a plan for creating wealth that you can't outlive and still leave some money to your heirs. I have read several of Nick Murray's books, but this one is the first intended for the general investing public. As usual, as only he can, Nick takes a rather complex subject, and simplifies it so that the average investor, or beginning investor, can understand. If you are looking for the "hot" fund or for a get rich quick scheme, this book is not for you. However, if you are interested in putting together a plan to create the wealth that you desire, I think this book is for you. An easy to read handbook for disciplined investors.

Best for Outdoor Training Method.......2005-04-25
I am an apartment dweller and will litter box train my toy breed. This book DOES address this less common method, but the author makes "no bones" about it, the outdoor potty method is the way to go. That aside, this book provides a very comprehensive guide to the before/during/after stages of housebreaking your puppy or adult dog, including a good Q & A section with each chapter to deal with training difficulties. This book has a very precise layout and concise directions that is particularly helpful for the new puppy/dog owner who is inexperienced with crate training and training in general. It is equally helpful for owners of toy and large breeds.

seen better dog training books.......2004-08-24
I have been reading a lot of dog training books and compiling the different methods to see what will work best for my 3 dogs. overall the things in this book are great ideas. The only thing I see to be the real problem is the way it is written, it isn't easy to use and is extremely wordy. I think that the Liz Palika Guide to raising a puppy is much better. You get the same training methods and commands but you also get a guide to use if your puppy gets sick, help with grooming, housetraining, bonding, you name it. Its overall a much better book.

good but can be improved .......2007-05-12
It is good to have a reference, but it must be absolutely improved.
Items like how it is organized is a critical item.
Also it is mostly for US celebrities autographs, but if you are looking for non-US celebrities, you may be disappointed.
From Great to Mediocre.......2005-11-12
The author is a member of the respected Universal Autograph Collectors Club, which is a non-profit organization comprised of autograph collectors founded in 1965. The UACC gave high marks to this book, which is why I gave it a try.
The author does an excellent job of providing an overview of the various markets (historical figures, presidents, celebs, etc.) and gives some solid insight into collecting and what to look for. It's obvious he knows his stuff.
I'll have to agree with the first reviewer, though, in that the book is not easy to navigate. There's no comprehensive alphabetical listing of the people named in the book, so you'll have to hunt for what you're looking for, assuming what you're looking for is listed somewhere.
Most annoying are the abbreviations used. I'm a long-time collector, but I found myself desperately searching for the meanings of several of the abbreviations used - and they were not easy to find. A brief table at the beginning of each chapter defining these abbreviations would be fine, or just spell them out in smaller print on each page. Not difficult.
The ads in the book didn't bother me as it's a reference book, not a novel you'd sit down and read cover to cover. But what did bother me was the many typos and misspellings throughout (i.e Marrtin instead of Martin). This could have easily been avoided by having someone proofread the final draft. Easy!
To Mr. Baker's credit, it is obvious he did exhaustive research for this book, and a lot of the information he shares is interesting and informative. I hope when it's time for the fifth edition that he seriously considers adding an alphabetical index and double-checking the text for misspellings. And although the author clearly states that each list is not meant to be complete (just representative, which is fair), I'd still like to see more entries in the more popular categories, such as celebrities and music.
Cumbersome and overpriced.......2005-08-12
Nice introductory materials, including market perspectives and a market analysis, and loaded with names of the famous and not-so-famous.
Because of the layout of the chapters, however, you might have some difficulty locating a particular person in your search for an autograph value. For example, in which chapter would you hunt for Howard Hughes? Aviation? Business Leaders, Economists, Financiers, and Publishers? Newsmakers? Then again, why would I want to hunt? A purely alphabetical listing would prevent quite a few headaches, or an index would end my misery altogether.
Or would it? Because unless you live and breath the autograph world, the abbreviations in this book will befuddle you. The abbreviations and what they mean should be printed on each page, even if in very small print, because locating the abbreviation keys (different in each chapter, it seems) is an exercise in utter madness.
Finally, with all the advertising in this book--yes, advertising, starting with a full-page ad on the inside-front cover!--it should be priced like a large magazine at maybe $5.95 or so. The $24.95 cover price seems hard to justify with so many ads--including ads interspersed throughout the book, 24 consecutive pages at the back, and one big ad that dominates the back cover! It's a book-a-zine!
I'll give Baker's book two stars out of five for its comprehensive coverage of the autograph field, but not more. I'm still trying to locate a few signatures, but with no index, I'm getting tired of hunting.
Book Description
With over 60,000 values, it's easy to see why the Autograph Collector Price Guide has become the definitive Bible of autograph collecting.
Customer Reviews:
THANKS!.......2002-11-21
This book is exactly what I've been looking for!!? It lists the values of names I couldn't find anywhere else, as well as displaying informative data on collecting!!
DISAPPOINTED!.......2002-05-08
This book was a huge disappointment. Sure, it lists prices for thousands of autographs, but the "facsimiles" section is a joke. I highly doubt anyone is losing sleep wondering if their "Peggy Moran", "Bill Withers" or "Marjorie Ann Kent" (who?) signatures are authentic or not, yet space is wasted with these names, while more famous, more collectable ones (Garland, Astaire, etc.) are left out. And to top it off, some of these examples are captioned with glaring typos: "Michael Cain", instead of "Caine", "Kristy MacNichols", instead of "MacNichol". And this guy's an expert?
Great book for celebrity autograph collectors........1999-11-05
The book is great in showing the values of many famous people's autographs of pictures, letters, or just signatures on index cards. The only downfall of the book is that it doesn't have any sports athletes listed in the book.
OK as a reference.......1999-07-14
Hundreds of pages listing values. I would have liked more information on each auto. Also more inforamtive chapters. And more examples.
INFORMATIVE, EDUCATIONAL & ACCURATE!.......1999-05-06
This is the best autograph price guide available! I like it because it is published by the leading autograph entity in the world! Autograph Collector magazine is great, and the publishers have been putting out the magazine for over 12 years! No one has better access to current, up-to-date data than the publisher of this book.

Book Description
Anna May Wong, born in Los Angeles in 1905 to a traditional family that did not support her ambition, is the only Asian-American actress to have achieved stardom during Hollywood's Golden Age. In her youth she went to hundreds of motion pictures and studied the actors. She remained single to avoid a conventional Chinese marriage that could endanger her career. With her beauty and grace, she gradually became the darling of the intelligentsia, inspiring poems, songs, and crowds of admirers in the British Isles, Europe, and China. During World War II, she toured the United States, New Zealand, and Australia for the benefit of the Chinese war relief. Leaving a legacy of some 60 film appearances, numerous stage and television shows, and several radio spots, Wong remains an outstanding role model for Asian-American performers.
This book covers Anna May Wong's entire career through detailed filmographic entries, each containing critical commentary as well as standard cast and technical credits, synopses, and newspaper and magazine reviews. The separate sections detail Wong's stage work and radio and television appearances. Information on Wong's beginnings in Los Angeles and personal life is also provided.
Customer Reviews:
Another Disappointment from Mcfarland.......2006-09-12
I must disagree respectfully with the many laudatory customer reviews on McFarland's book about Anna May Wong.
Many times, McFarland provides genre enthusiasts highly specialized books that are a delight on persons or subjects all but ignored by other publishers. As many times, however, McFarland publishes overpriced works that are shallow, lacking detail, lacking perspective and otherwise remind the reader of the unsophisticated drivel that used to be the only available critiques.
Unfortunately, Anna May Wong falls into the latter category. The biographical materials is scant and uninformative on this fascinating and too little known talent. The filmography is shallow, with virtually no critical analysis or historical perspective.
40 years ago, when I first looked for books on horror films, film noir and other genres, all that one could find were poorly written, sometimes nicely illustrated, works that only added to the low reputation of such films and their fans. The late 1960s and thereafter, however, saw the rise of serious film critiques, written not turgidly but with the enthusiasm of intelligent, informed fans.
McFarland often contributed to the rise of useful film criticism, which makes its shoddy Anna May Wong all the more inexcusible.
Wong Done Right.......2005-04-13
In ANNA MAY WONG: A COMPLETE GUIDE TO HER FILM, STAGE, RADIO AND TELEVISION WORK authors Philip Leibfried and Chei Mi Lane deliver an authoritative work of solid research and scholarship.
It's a quaintly old-fashioned book. In layout and writing style it could've been published thirty or forty years ago. Aptly, the slightly anachronistic format and feel is a fine showcase for the authors' good old-fashioned scholarship and authority. Its focus is no doubt narrower than other the two other books devoted to Wong, but is completely successful within its stated scope and goals.
The book sketches Wong's life in admirable fashion, but lavishes most attention to her work in film and stage. The authors' research was truly exhaustive, and it would be hard to imagine the book ever being eclipsed. It will remain an important reference work for any scholar of Wong's work for many years to come.
Richly detailed and enlivened by juicy excerpts from vintage reviews, I can imagine this book inspiring hours of pleasure for any film buff or Wong fan.
Alas, the book notes that many of Wong's films are lost, but this admirable work keeps them alive in some small way through its honest affection and scrupulous scholarship.
Solid filmography.......2004-03-01
A really fine book with a superb range of illustrations. Not meant to be a biography, its main value lies in its tracing of the career of Anna May Wong, and not in any rumors or suppositions about her life. This is the way a professional's life should be remembered: for her work, and not solely for her personal strengths or failings. Highly recommended---and a book that will not be improved upon for decades.
To Lin Chen.......2004-02-22
Thank you. As Mr. Leibfried said, a lot of years was put into this book, and I am proud of my association and friendship with him. Had it not been for Philip's work in the '80s, much of the information on Anna May would not have been available to others.
I have no way to contact you, but note that we are in the same city. If you would like me to sign your book, please let me know. I cannot post my email address here, but my name is in the phone book.
Sincerely,
Chei Mi Lane
Excellent guide!!!.......2004-02-19
I love old movies. And I really enjoy reading this kind of book and looking at the pictures. This is an excellent guide to Anna May Wong's work! It's very thorough, well written, and well illustrated with great pictures throughout.

Book Description
The Labour Party became a major political force during the 1920s. It unexpectedly entered office as a minority government in 1924; five years later as the largest party in the Commons it took office again. For many the party's enhanced status was associated closely with its leader, Ramsay MacDonald. The years of optimism were destroyed by rising unemployment; in August 1931, the second Labour Government faced pressures for public expenditure cuts in the midst of a financial crisis. The Government collapsed, and MacDonald led a new administration composed of erstwhile opponents and a few old colleagues. Labour went into opposition; an early election reduced it to a parliamentary rump. This study offers a uniquely detailed analysis of Labour in the 1920s based on a wide variety of unpublished sources. The emphasis is on the variety of identities available within the party, and demonstrates how disputes over identity made a crucial contribution to the 1931 crisis. Thorough scholarship and distinctive interpretation combine to provide an important examination of a major episode in twentieth-century history.
