Out of seemingly small events are sometimes born great historical moments. The case of young Edgardo Mortara is one. In 1858 the 6-year-old Jewish boy was taken from his parents' home in Bologna, Italy, by agents of the Papal inquisition. The year before, seriously ill, Edgardo had been secretly baptized, by the Mortaras' Catholic servant (or so she claimed); it was against the law for baptized Christians to be raised by Jews, and so, in the eyes of the Church, the kidnapping was only just. Secular Italians did not agree, and thus was set in motion a series of reforms that ended the Church's temporal power in Italy and forged the creation of a liberal, near-democratic state. For his part, young Edgardo became a priest and lived in a Belgian abbey until 1940--just before the invading Germans began to deport and execute all those tainted with Jewish blood. David Kertzer has shaped a remarkable narrative from almost forgotten events.
Book Description
National Book Award Finalist
Bologna, 1858: A police posse, acting on the orders of a Catholic inquisitor, invades the home of a Jewish merchant, Momolo Mortara, wrenches his crying six-year-old son from his arms, and rushes him off in a carriage bound for Rome. His mother is so distraught that she collapses and has to be taken to a neighbor's house, but her weeping can be heard across the city. With this terrifying scene--one that would haunt this family forever--David I. Kertzer begins his fascinating investigation of the dramatic kidnapping, and shows how the deep-rooted antisemitism of the Catholic Church would eventually contribute to the collapse of its temporal power in Italy. As Edgardo's parents desperately search for a way to get their son back, they learn why he--out of all their eight children--was taken. Years earlier, the family's Catholic serving girl, fearful that the infant might die of an illness, had secretly baptized him (or so she claimed). Edgardo recovered, but when the story reached the Bologna Inquisitor, the result was his order for Edgardo to be seized and sent to a special monastery where Jews were converted into good Catholics. His justification in Church teachings: No Christian child could be raised by Jewish parents. The case of Edgardo Mortara became an international cause célèbre. Although such kidnappings were not uncommon in Jewish communities across Europe, this time the political climate had changed. As news of the family's plight spread to Britain, where the Rothschilds got involved, to France, where it mobilized Napoleon III, and even to America, public opinion turned against the Vatican. The fate of this one boy came to symbolize the entire revolutionary campaign of Mazzini and Garibaldi to end the dominance of the Catholic Church and establish a modern, secular Italian state. A riveting story which has been remarkably ignored by modern historians--
The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara will prompt intense interest and discussion as it lays bare attitudes of the Catholic Church that would have such enormous consequences in the twentieth century.

Way Better than the Da Vinci Code.......2007-09-11
Douglas Wood has already summarized and evaluated this book, justly praising its historical worth. I'd like to add a note about its shock value; in a moment of history when anti-semitism seems to be a joke in some people's minds, surely this is a book that might make the pain and folly of bigotry "real" in terms of a single family, and therefore accessible to readers who can't empathize with mass tragedy.
It's also quite a thrilling book to read, by the way, a better detective story by far than Dan Brown could manufacture.
The Inquisition Kidnaps a Jewish Boy - in 1858!.......2007-09-03
A Jewish family's illiterate Catholic housekeeper sprinkles well-water over an infant child and furtively mumbles the baptismal sacrament. When the Inquisitor learns of the deed, he orders the kidnapping of the then six-year-old Jewish boy. This foul deed is almost certainly sanctioned by the highest levels of the Catholic hierarchy. The police forcibly remove the child from his family's Bologna home and swiftly transport him to the Church's House of Catechumens in Rome for reeducation. Despite all protests from the boy's family and the Jewish community and in the face of a destabilizing international uproar, the Holy Father refuses to yield. By holy grace, the boy has been miraculously saved and the Church keeps him, inculcates him in the Catholic Christian religion, and assiduously converts the boy.
The boy kidnapped in the name of religion? Edgardo Mortara. The Holy Father in question? Pope Pius IX. The year? 1858. That's right 1858, not 1458, not 1658, but smack dab in the middle of 19th century Europe.
Historian David Kertzer tells the complete tale in his excellent work, `The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara.' As Kertzer relates in the epilogue he learned to his surprise that there was no reliable work on this topic. Kertzer sets out to remedy this gap and succeeds by examining the episode in fine detail. Using detailed court and police investigation records, Kertzer explores numerous evidentiary questions such as whether the baptism took place at all, whether the proper conditions for a valid lay baptism existed, who put the girl up to it, and how did the Inquisition find out about it?
The story is told against the background of the movement to unify Italy under secular rule. And here is yet another surprise for the uninitiated reader, including this one: until 1861 the Pope was still the temporal ruler of a wide swath of the Italian peninsula (this rule continued on a lesser scale to 1870). The treatment of young Edgardo was one of the factors that helped build support across Italy and internationally for the Risorgimento or Italian reunification.
The episode also hastened Pius IX's evolution, shall we say, to reactionary beliefs. Pius IX not only made papal infallibility part of Church dogma, but he also issued his infamous Syllabus of Errors in 1864, a broad attack on rationalism, science, and religious freedom - really a frontal assault on the Enlightenment and most other signs of progress in the previous three centuries. If Kertzer's book does nothing more than direct his reader's attention to this astonishing document, he has succeeded in the historian's task.
Kertzer examines the trial of the Inquisitor in detail and the formidable difficulties facing the prosecution. For example, what crime did the Inquisitor commit when his acts were legal at the time he committed them? Would the new government prove willing to violate the fundamental principle that the accused must have had notice of the illegality of his acts?
As for Edgardo, he remained with the Church fathers until he reached his majority and by then his conversion had firmly taken hold. He went on to become a famed proselytizer for Catholicism especially among the Jewish peoples. This role may help explain why this story has remained untold: it embarrassed Jews and Catholics alike.
Some readers may find the detail devoted to the investigations and trials to be excessive, but bear in mind that Kertzer is writing the seminal history of Edgardo's kidnapping. A fascinating tale full of surprises, very highly recommended.
Engrossing Story.......2007-01-05
Simply one of the most insightful books I have ever read. Thank you Mr. Kertzer for illuminating this fascinating event in our history.
An Astounding Story and Well-Written.......2006-02-27
I can't help but think that millions who do not know that they are interested in the history of the Italian Risorgimento would suddenly find themselves incapable of putting this book down. David Kertzer kept my attention while helping to answer my questions regarding how a country that is predominately Roman Catholic can name streets, buildings, and piazzas after the heroes of the Risorgimento who took by force most of the lands ruled by the Pope while Pope Pius IX called upon all the faithful to oppose them. I am now closer to seeing how statues and monuments honoring Garibaldi, Mazzini, Cavour, and King Victor Emmanuel can share the beautiful Italian landscape with cathedrals and the Vatican.
Historical events are impossible to understand without learning of the human issues of the times in which they transpired. Such a study should not be a dry recounting of the facts when it can be, as Kertzer demonstrates, a living, breathing, gut-wrenching encounter with those who created that compelling history.
I know it's almost cliché to say that this reads like a good novel, but it's true.
The trial of Momolo Mortara rivals any of the stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and it is all the more riveting in the context of the amazing events that led to it. Sherlock Holmes could not have used his powers of deduction more skillfully than Momolo's attorney used his unbiased mind to separate facts from prejudiced and selective interpretations.
I give this book my highest recommendation. I hope that THE KIDNAPPING OF EDGARDO MORTARA has been or will be translated into Italian. Perhaps a greater awareness of the past can positively influence current challenges in Italy involving the assimilation of other cultures and religious beliefs - brought on by mass immigrations in recent years.
Fascinating read!.......2005-01-09
This story is well-researched and beautifully written. While history isn't always fair in how it plays out, Edgardo's story kept me engrossed through the end. It's ironic to think that had he lived a little longer he would have probably died as a Jew with his brethren in a Nazi death camp.
Book Description
The Jewish community in Italy has a long and storied history going back more than two millennia to the days of the Roman Empire. This remarkable guidebook-the only one of its kind-is a city by city survey of every location in Italy that contains art, artifacts, or architecture tied to the Jewish heritage of Italy. Included are scores of synagogues as well as scrolls, texts, artifacts, and Jewish cemeteries. Of particular interest are sidebars explaining fascinating peculiarities of various Italian Jewish communities. For instance, Tuscan Jews in the medieval period spoke a distinctive version of Italian dialect peppered with phrases from Hebrew and other languages, a sort of Italian Yiddish. Sure to fascinate devotees of Jewish culture and lovers of Italy, The Guide to Jewish Italy is perfect for armchair travelers and inveterate tourists alike.

Banned by the Inquisition in 1693, fourteen months after the author's death, this manual by one of the Italian Jewish community's most effective preachers has remained unpublished since then. But this guide to composing, organizing, and delivering sermons is remarkably valuable. The vital questions of the sermon's length, problem's of organization, opening and conclusion, the preacher's use of examples, his manner of speech and gesture--all these are taken up in Rabbi Zohalon's work.

Wisdom of old relevant today .......2004-12-27
Rabbi Sosland ' rescued from oblivion' this seventeenth century Italian preacher's manual. A number of distinguished Rabbis recommend the book as having relevance today and being very useful in helping preparation of sermons.
Here is a sample bit of advice." He(the preacher) should vary the tone of his voice according to the subject matter. For example, if he is relating the words of a king, he should speak with an authoritarian manner.. Yet if he is relating the words of the common people he should speak plaintively, " for the poor uses entreaties" . If he is discussing a matter which might provoke worry and pain he should speak with a sad and subdued voice , even weeping as he speaks and with tears in his eyes. Yet if he sicussing a joyful mattter, he should speak with delight and happy face."

Good information on tank setup and maintenanance.......1999-01-18
I found that while this book had a lot of helpful information in certain areas, there wasn't consistent information for each fish mentioned in the book. As a beginner in the fishkeeping world I was really looking for a book that could give me the basic requirements for specific fish, i.e. max. size, water requirements, feeding requirements, behavior, etc. While this information was provided for some fish, it was not provided for all, which was a little frustrating. Also I found that many of the types of fish listed in this book were not available in your typical fish store or had a name that was different than what it was commonly called (in the U.S.). This book does provide very helpful sections (almost half the book) on setting up a tank with wonderful information on water management, equipment, foods, feeding, etc.
*Added 12/13/01 - After keeping fish almost 3 years I have found myself referring back to this book again and again. I would like to edit my earlier review and rating. The beautiful color photographs and information about each fish category are great. I was a little misled by the title, as I assumed that every type of freshwater fish would be catalogued in this book. Because different kinds of fish are availabe in different areas of the country/world and often they are called different names, I now realize that you would need a book the size of Webster's dictionary to be able to list every fish you might encounter!

Book Description
This beautiful work by two great Dutch plantsmen presents the largest selection of color photographs of elepidote rhododendron species, varieties, hybrids, and cultivars ever gathered in one volume, a lavish tribute to the most spectacular of flowering shrubs.
Amazon.com
There are a great number of books listing rhododendrons, identifying them, and enumerating their virtues. Such books are useful for rhody fanciers who want to learn more about their favorite plants, but do little to help gardeners with what they really need to know: how to choose the best rhododendrons and how to use them in the garden.
Sonja Nelson concentrates her considerable experience on explaining which of the many kinds of rhododendrons are the most garden-worthy and how to incorporate them into your garden's design. Color photos show rhodies growing in different conditions, along with a variety of other plantings. Rhododendrons are pictured growing lushly and flowering profusely in gardens in such diverse locales as Los Angeles, Scotland, Georgia, and Pennsylvania. They work well mixed into a perennial border, thriving in a pot (the large-leafed Rhododendrons sinogrande), and consorting with a Japanese maple, as in the spectacular combination of lacy foliage found in R. macrosepalum "Linearifolium" and Acer palmatum "Dissectum."
The most useful chapter in the book may be the one on companion plantings for rhododendrons. Finding suitable plants to layer with rhodies can be difficult, as they need plenty of water and have a number of surface roots that don't like competition or disturbance. Nelson sees rhododendrons as versatile plants useful as hedging, pruned up as trees, or layered into borders with a wide variety of shrubs, perennials, and groundcovers, including hydrangeas, Oregon grape, bleeding heart, coral bells, and maidenhair ferns.
The old, sterile gardening style--with an expanse of lawn, barked beds, and lined-up shrubs--is over. Nelson provides the gardener with the information he or she needs to make rhododendrons part of the newer, more naturalistic garden filled with a variety of plantings. She also makes a compelling case for rhododendrons' place in mixed borders and convinces the reader that these plants deserve to steal the show. --Valerie Easton
Book Description
Rhododendrons and azaleas are among the most popular of garden shrubs because of their wonderful variety of colors, textures, shapes, and sizes. Selecting the best species or hybrids for various garden situations can present a real challenge to the gardener. Sonja Nelson, editor of the Journal American Rhododendron Society, offers practical and inspiring guidance on how best to use rhododendrons, starting with a brief explanation of basic design principles that serve as guidelines for creating many different kinds of gardens. She discusses woodland and alpine rock gardens, small gardens, and elements such as island beds, containers, hedges, and water features in which rhododendrons can be effectively used. In addition to suggesting and encouraging the use of suitable companion plants, she provides 19 tables listing species and cultivars most appropriate for specific garden situations. Including many inspiring photographs, the book will enable any gardener or landscaper to display these spectacular plants in harmonious surroundings.

Description:
Secondary nature, which is maintained by human interference, in a sense is more difficult to preserve than virgin nature because it deeply relates to lifestyles of human beings. Secondary forests of satoyama, including pine-dominated forests and coppice forests, are facing increased crises since oil for fuel took the place of firewood and charcoal in 1950s. We tried to detect the long-term dynamism of satoyama in a fringe area of Kyoto city quantitatively and spatially by the survival of native Rhododendrons, ecological indicators of ancient satoyama. In the landscape of the eastern fringe of Kyoto city, native Rhododendrons have decreased, while the total basal area has increased in the 21 years since 1974. The survival and reproductive situations of native Rhododendrons were different in each type of ecotope, which were extracted from features of geology, topology and forest physiognomy. A relatively high number of native Rhododendrons survived in the ecotope types of deciduous forests on granite compared to that in the ecotope types of evergreen forests. Seedlings of native Rhododendrons were observed only on mosses in the natural forest of Japanese cypress on consolidated sediment of the Mesozoic and Paleozoic eras. Without resuming coppicing for regeneration of native Rhododendrons, or litter clearing for establishment of seedlings, colonies of native Rhododendrons are expected to go on decreasing. We need to take different measures to meet each situation of ecotope type. In order to work out a strategy for conservation of secondary nature, it is necessary to make the target clear in quantity and in space. Detecting the long-term dynamism of representative species of secondary nature should provide practical information for strategic planning of conserving secondary nature.

Book Description
Harlow, An Intimate Biography, is the biography of Jean Harlow, the first of the typically American love goddesses as well as a presentation of the big-studio feudalism of the Thirties and a near sociological consideration of that American phenomenon, the sex symbol devised for mass consumption.
Customer Reviews:
Sleaze.......2007-06-11
I felt like jumping into the shower after reading this miserable trashing of poor Jean, who isn't around to defend herself. She wasn't anything like what this book describes. If you want to read this garbage, do so, but remember to wash your hands afterwards.
Trash but good trash............2005-07-07
While it is agreed this book is a definate dishonour to jean harlow's memory. One should be smart enough to realize it is still one of the best trashy pulp reads i have ever experienced. Irving shulman is regarded as one of the best pulp novelists with his stories about life on the streets circa 1940's. This film noir treatment of harlow's life maybe inacurrate, but it is still an entertaining read that would make jackie collins green with envy. If one also reads nathanel west's novel, "day of the locust", One could feel it is an companion piece to this other fictonal work detailing side of hollywood life one rarely wishes to think about.
Trashed Platinum Venus.......2002-06-08
Ugh!! Along with Shulman's "Valentino," one of the worst movie star biographies I've ever read. Harlow is reduced to a breast-bearing harpie, not to mention poor Paul Bern, whose reputation is utterly trashed. Written as though the writer were present for every intimate moment of Harlow's life, it offers no reliable information. I cannot believe this was the story of Harlow's agent, Arthur Landau. Avoid this hysterical trash and read David Stenn's "Bombshell" instead, a more balanced and sane look at Harlow.
caca.......1998-03-31
This is what a biography should never be. It's poorly written, poorly edited and is merely a titillating vehicle for the biographer to get some cheap thrills. It was Garbage.
Product Description
From the back cover: Harlow: the long-supressed, true story of the platinum-haired love goddess who may have been the inspiration for "The Carpetbaggers" but whose real life was more sensational than any novelist could imagine.
