At last, an authoritative guide that is also readable; one that shows the trees' relation to human and animal life -- even in the charming illustrations. Includes leaf-shape guide, range maps, and an index of popular and scientific names for over 120 trees, both native and naturalized.
Customer Reviews:
really nice.......2007-01-23
Well organized, the text fairly glows with the authors enthusiasm for the subject.
It's really well organized and written.
THe only way I can see to improve it is lots of colro plates..
I wish they'd write a book just like it on edible plants of texas.
It's really friendly, and really good.......2006-07-31
Patty Leslie Pasztor and Paul Cox are two of the great gurus of native plant life in Texas. And they are just as friendly as this book is. I have many Texas native plant books on my shelf, but this if my first "go to" volume. I especially love Patty's ethnobotany commentaries. They add a great breadth of understanding to Texas human history, as well as its natural history.
Indispensable.......2003-07-13
If you are interested in trees and live in Texas, this is the ONE book you must have. So often you have to buy a Western U.S. book for West Texas and an Eastern U.S. book for East Texas - and you still don't have all the trees in the Rio Grande Valley that are primarily Mexican.
The book is clear and easy to use. Even better, it gives interesting tidbits about each tree's range and habits in Texas, including the location of the largest known example in the state.
Highly recommended!
It Really Works!.......2000-10-25
Ever wonder what kind of tree you're looking at? If you're in Texas, you can't miss with this book.
The book includes a map of soil types (with its natural diversity, Texas could be a country in itself!) and follows it with general drawings of leaves. Compare the leaf you see to the drawings in the book and you're sent to a tree family. From there you simply find the tree from more detailed drawings and area maps. It's easy! I am now considered a tree guru.
What else? Look through the book and find which trees will do best in your area, their size and flowers, virtually everything the homeowner, naturalist, or budding naturalist needs or wants to know.
When hiking our many parks and wildscape areas, other naturalist books stay home. This book comes with me...it's great!

Not too helpful.......2004-03-11
I'm a 'tweener when it comes to travel: Too old for the hostel racket, but not rich enough to hit every 5-star. So when I travel, I generally take two guidebooks -- Fodor's, the old reliable when it comes to hotel and restaurant recs, and Rick Steves, for practical stuff like the best way to getting from airport to hotel and discount passes and such.
I like Rick Steves' attitude toward travel, which is to be as local as possible. I also like that he has definite opinions and that he prioritizes his listings. Even when you don't agree (and I don't a lot of the time) it still helps the planning when you have only a limited amount of time.
Well, I bought this guide because I was hitting 3 cities in it -- Berlin, Prague, and Budapest -- and was frankly a little disappointed with the dearth of useful information available. Now don't get me wrong: When I first picked it up, there was definitely some stuff I could use. But with the vast resources available (for free) on the internet, I realized this book's shortcomings. Check out www.inyourpocket.com, which has more current restaurant, bar and nightclub listings; terrific calendar of events; better directions from airport to downtown. Plus lots of website links. And you can print it out or download to a PDA! (No, I don't work for them.)
Perhaps it's unfair to compare a book, which must be researched and edited 2 years before it's printed, to a website, which can up updated to the minute. But then the book has got to offer something more, something extra, something the website can't offer. And this book doesn't. (Well, there is a good color Berlin map at the front.)
This book may be worth it if you are planning on going to several of the cities listed, instead of the 3 I needed. And I am not a rabid Rick Steves hater like some. The book is just bland and I probably won't even carry it when I go on my trip.
This book rocks........2004-02-26
Get this, and you won't need to schlep around any other travel guides - it has everything you'll need. Very user friendly, and great suggestions (especially for someone's first trip to Eastern Europe).

The recurring metaphor in The Inmates are Running the Asylum is that of the dancing bear--the circus bear that shuffles clumsily for the amusement of the audience. Such bears, says author Alan Cooper, don't dance well, as everyone at the circus can see. What amazes the crowd is that the bear dances at all. Cooper argues that technology (videocassette recorders, car alarms, most software applications for personal computers) consists largely of dancing bears--pieces that work, but not at all well. He goes on to say that this is more often than not the fault of poorly designed user interfaces, and he makes a good argument that way too many devices (perhaps as a result of the designers' subconscious wish to bully the people who tormented them as children) ask too much of their users. Too many systems (like the famous unprogrammable VCR) make their users feel stupid when they can't get the job done.
Cooper, who designed Visual Basic (the programming environment Microsoft promotes for the purpose of creating good user interfaces), indulges in too much name-dropping and self-congratulation (Cooper attributes the quote, "How did you do that?" to Microsoft chairman Bill Gates, upon looking at one of Cooper's creations)--but this appears to be de rigueur in books about the software industry. But those asides are minor. More valuable is the discourse about software design and implementation ("[O]bject orientation divides the 1000-brick tower into 10 100-brick towers."). Read this book for an idea of what's wrong with UI design. --David Wall
Topics covered: User interfaces--good ones and bad ones--and where they come from. Also, how to improve the ones you create.
Book Description
Imagine, at a terrifyingly aggressive rate, everything you regularly use is being equipped with computer technology. Think about your phone, cameras, cars-everything-being automated and programmed by people who in their rush to accept the many benefits of the silicon chip, have abdicated their responsibility to make these products easy to use.
The Inmates Are Running the Asylum argues that the business executives who make the decisions to develop these products are not the ones in control of the technology used to create them. Insightful and entertaining,
The Inmates Are Running the Asylum uses the author's experiences in corporate America to illustrate how talented people continuously design bad software-based products and why we need technology to work the way average people think. Somewhere out there is a happy medium that makes these types of products both user and bottom-line friendly; this book discusses why we need to quickly find that medium.

Imagine, at a terrifyingly aggressive rate, everything you regularly use is being equipped with computer technology. Think about your phone, cameras, cars - everything - being automated and programmed by people who in their rush to accept the many benefits of the silicon chip, have abdicated their responsibility to make these products easy to use. The Inmates are Running the Asylum argues that, despite appearances, business executives are simply not the ones in control of the high-tech industry. They have inadvertently put programmers and engineers in charge, leading to products and processes that waste money, squander customer loyalty, and erode competitive advantage. Business executives have let the inmates run the asylum! In his book The Inmates Are Running the Asylum Alan Cooper calls for revolution - we need technology to work in the same way average people think - we need to restore the sanity. He offers a provocative, insightful and entertaining explanation of how talented people continuously design bad software-based products. More importantly, he uses his own work with companies big and small to show how to harness those talents to create products that will both thrill their users and grow the bottom line.
Customer Reviews:
No Cognitive Friction Here.. .......2007-06-12
Alan Cooper gives the reader insight into why so many of today's technological products frustrate and confuse users. Yet he goes past this to discuss a methodology for keeping it simple and designing for the user i.e. avoiding cognitive friction. This book has changed the way I will develop products and should be a must read for product managers of application developers. Just learning Mr. Cooper's vocabulary is worth the read. The ideas such as personas, keywords, and designing for an individual push the book way above average. This is an easy read that should be done in your spare time if you want to avoid cognitive friction with your users. It has changed the way I view technology and brought a new awareness to thoughtless technology implementation which often cause failure or misuse. The only reason I gave this book a 4 out of 5 as I feel it could have been reduced a little bit more, certain points I felt like the author was rambling about personal fustrations.
an essential handbook for designing software.......2007-06-11
Cooper's argument in this book is simple: you have to know your users, and you have to understand what they're trying to accomplish with your software. The method that he puts forth for achieving this understanding is personas, richly-described archetypical users.
The book is easy to read and understand. He begins with a detailed description of the problem with software design as carried about by programmers who can only imagine themselves as the users of their software, resulting in software that makes really difficult things possible but doesn't bother to make easy or common things quick and easy.
After making the argument that programmers shouldn't design interfaces and making the case both for usability and interaction design, he lays out the personas concept. Cooper's guidelines for creating personas and using them are well-written and well-thought-out. However, his examples of applying them to some of his own customers are rather repetitive, and sometimes come across as somewhat whiny.
Now that it's time for my group at Microsoft to revisit our personas and determine what needs to be tweaked for our next version, I decided that I should revisit the book that first advanced the idea. It has stood up well to the test of time (something that not many computer books can do). I highly recommend it, both to usability and design professionals, as well as programmers.
Great writing, very illustrative examples, definitely not a detailed how-to.......2007-05-13
The strength of this book its clear and easy-to-read writing. Cooper's examples are instructive and the theory of why design-centric business approaches are the most powerful. It's supposed to be a business-case book but I'm quite sure all programmers and even designers would find the read very worthwhile.
My only wish for the book would be that Chapter 10 onwards seemed to be the really exciting stuff, detailing the how more than the why of design-centric approaches. This part feels like a rushed summary in comparison the the attention paid to the why aspect in the rest of the book. You may want to consider Cooper's newly revised "how" book although it is mainly a designer's handbook: About Face 3: The Essentials of Interaction Design
I'm not done with that About Face 3: The Essentials of Interaction Design but I'm starting to worry it's going to leave me wishing it had more specific methodologies as opposed to theories. Of course, it has much more methodological attention than The Inmates Are Running the Asylum: Why High Tech Products Drive Us Crazy and How to Restore the Sanity (2nd Edition) and there's no fault in what is written, only in what is omitted.
If you're really looking for the ultimate how-to, you might want to consider attending the four-day "Cooper U". Case in point: I had the chance to ask Alan Cooper where I could learn more about how to create the design documents he writes about in the last part of The Inmates Are Running the Asylum: Why High Tech Products Drive Us Crazy and How to Restore the Sanity (2nd Edition) and he really couldn't say what books would be able to instruct that (including his own) and that it would be covered in his course.
this book changed my life.......2007-02-22
I was a well-paid systems administrator/help desk guy until I read this book. This book really did inspire me to change careers!
The book basically outlines why engineers (and people who think like engineers) are INCAPABLE of designing effective interfaces. It delves into specifics and supplies some great examples.
I am amused by some of the reviewers here who display the same sort of arrogant contempt that the book outlines. OF COURSE programming a VCR is easy for YOU--you're a person with an "engineer mind". My mom can't program a VCR at all, and that's not because she didn't try hard enough or read the instructions. She can't use it because everything about it's interface is counter-intuitive to someone who does not understand machine/code logic.
Just because it's easy for you doesn't mean it doesn't stink. Just because it makes sense to you doesn't mean it can't be made better--to work intuitively for "regular" people. Buy this book. Read it. Demand more from your products. It's time to end the insanity.
Blown out of proportion.......2007-01-18
It's true that some products have poor interfaces, but in my experience this "problem" is blown way out of proportion with reality. The only people I know who couldn't figure out how to program their VCRs were people who did not try for more than 5 minutes. Read the instructions, both in the book and onscreen, and VCR programming is a snap, from the earliest models to today.
I think the real question should be: Why are so many users so lazy? This is more of a social problem than a technological one. Some think that if any effort is required to learn how to use a new device then it's poorly designed. Poppycock!

Book Description
Gardening is now the favorite outdoor leisure activity in America. More and more homeowners now realize the health benefits derived from gardening and the increase in their home's property value.
The trend in gardening books is to regional titles, because they provide credible information on the plants that perform well in specific regions. Gardeners want information they can use successfully in their own gardens.
The popular gardening team of Dan Gill and Dr. Joe White offers the Louisiana Gardener's Guide - Revised Edition. They recommend specific varieties well-suited for Louisiana and provide advice on how to plant, how to grow and how to care for the state's top-performing plants.
Customer Reviews:
Great reference guide.......2007-06-25
When we first moved to Louisiana, this book was invaluable for making sure that we selected the right plants for our garden. I still refer back to it every year when choosing new annuals.
One busy guy.......2006-10-15
I don't know how Dan does it. Between his weekly Times Picayune newspaper column, his weekly gardening segment on WWL-TV Morning Show, a two hour call in radio show every Saturday and constant appearances at seminars, garden shows, I'm surprised Dan could find time to write a book. And a great book it is. If you garden in Louisiana or if you want to garden in Louisiana, you need this book. Hundreds of plants are spotlighted; what conditions they like, where to plant, sun needs and shade wants. Does the plant like wet feet, will it withstand a freeze? With pictures on most every page and comprehensive information on Louisiana plants, this book is an invaluable resource for beginners and reference for professionals.
The BEST book for the money.......2005-06-14
After buying our first home, my husband and I split the duties. Mine, of course, was the garden.
Since in the past everything I have touched has died due to forgetfulness to water, I was determined to have a garden with blooming flowers and shrubs. Since beginning on my own, I recently purchased 3 books through Amazon. After getting them and reading through them the past day or so, this is by far the best of them all.
This book has a picture on almost every page and a great description and legend for the plants, trees, shrubs and flowers it lists. Not every type is in here, but it is the most comprehensive and diverse book I have come across so far. The legend shows sun amounts, what insects are attracted to it (perfect if you don't like bees), which ones are best for cut arrangements and if it has fragrance.
I would recommend buying this book before all others. I have already went back to it many times in the short time I have had it. The other 2 books? I might try to sell them on Amazon to someone else because they were not much help.

Book Description
The Gospel Behind the Gospels portrays all the major areas of current discussion and debate regarding the early source of Jesus' sayings known as Q. Sixteen gospel scholars have advanced the debate about this source's nature, history and significance. Contributors discuss Q's existence, its relationship to Mark's gospel and to the Gospel of Thomas, its genre, its redactional history with special reference to the Son of Man and to wisdom and prophetic traditions, its social history with respect to family structures and the Cynics, a feminist analysis of Q, its significance for the historical Jesus and for Jesus' parables. The volume sheds important light on Jesus and Christian origins as well as upon Q itself, and it is significant for the diversity of major North American, European and Japanese scholarship which is represented.
Book Description
“The really important things in life are your family and friends. And what will people say about you at your funeral—that you won an Emmy once, or that you were a good person, kind and generous? Well, as for me, I hope it's the latter. And the fact that I recently commissioned an Emmy-shaped coffin just eliminates the need for anyone to bring it up.”
Everybody knows that Patricia Heaton plays the hilarious, wise, and tempestuous married-with-kids everywoman on Everybody Loves Raymond. What they might not know is that in real life she is married, has four boys under eight years old, and is just as funny offscreen as on.
Motherhood and Hollywood is Patricia Heaton’s humorous and poignant collection of essays on life, love, marriage, child-rearing, show business, having parents, being a parent, spousal rage, surviving fame, success, and the shame of underarm flab. She is warm, witty, and refreshingly irreverent.
Heaton grew up in suburban Cleveland, one of five children of devout Roman Catholic parents. Her father was a noted sportswriter for The Plain Dealer; her mother died suddenly and unexpectedly when Heaton was twelve. Love, fast food, and an unflagging sense of humor held the clan together and propelled Patricia on a showbiz career that began with hilariously nightmarish struggles in New York, eventually leading to a triumphant move to Los Angeles.
In
Motherhood and Hollywood, Patricia Heaton pours out her heart and minces no words. She’s taking all prisoners for cookies and a glass of Jack Daniel’s and diet ginger ale. Laughter ensues.

Like becoming Friends.......2007-09-25
Have you ever read a book and felt like you had become friends with the character of the book? I have read Motherhood and Hollywood over the last week and everyday after reading it I would discuss the book with my wife. My wife bought the book for me knowing how much I love Patricia Heaton and her character on Everybody Loves Raymond and the Movie: "The Engagement Ring." We even set aside a special time to watch the first episode of her new sitcom on Fox. One night after talking about the chapters I had read with my wife, she actually said: "Did you ask her...." She stopped when she realized that I did not know Patricia nor had I ever met her, but the book had given me so many details about her life and was so genuine, it was as if we were friends. It even gave me a tiny epiphony later that evening when watching Everybody Loves Raymond and realizing that the Chuck Heaton that was nominated with Ray for "Sportswriter of the Year" was really Patricia's Father from Cleveland. Her book had actually given me insight on what must have been a loving and private joke on the show, as well as a tribute. I would recommend this book to any mom who has had to deal with growing older and how to look presentable. Who has had to deal with Motherhood and all the wonders such as flu, floaties and epidurals. This book is a treasure and a very private look into a very wonderful persons life. Patricia has given more than entertainment, she has given us her friendship and that is a very special gift. God Bless You Patricia,
M E Rosson
Informative, Interesting but No Pictures.......2007-09-11
I enoyed Patricia's book about her life and adventures on tv show,...Every Body Loves Raymond. I especially liked the parts about the show and the funny things that happened while making it. But I was very disappointed that there were no pictures. Maybe it's just me, but I like an autiobiography to have pictures other then the one on the cover. She is not the comic writer that Ray Romano is with his books, but I still enjoyed it.
Not as good as I anticipated.......2007-02-15
First of all I would like to state that I am a huge fan of Heaton, but I was quite dissapointed with the book. I read the book in one night; it is an easy read. Heaton jumps around with random short stories, one minute you're reading about cleveland, the next minute it is raymond. I didn't really like the structure of the book. Don't get me wrong, there are some good chapters, and the book is funny at times, but she doesn't give much insight into her life. She doesn't tell you much about her family and keeps a lot to herself. (Partially because the book is so short) The only major insight about her life that I got from this book is that she was a waitress at countless places and drank a lot in her youth. She loves her family and that is about it.
She is despicable.......2006-10-27
First she said Teri Schiavo should have Congress decide when she dies. Now she comes out against Michael J. Fox and stem cell research. This clueless and unattractive woman knows no shame.
She's a terrible actress and writer.
Lost a fan.......2006-10-26
I had heard that Ms. Heaton supports "conservative" causes (in quotes because todays conservatives hardly resemble fiscal discipline, limited government and individual rights advocates I recall having respect for). My take to date was that her political affiliation was largely a result of her anti-abortion beliefs, which I could accept, although I personally think that consistently credible sexual education is the answer to making abortions rare, not simply making abortions illegal and generating the tragedy that unwanted pregnancies wreak on women and their families).
There is great promise in stem cell research, including a possible method for cloning stem cells that does not include destroying the blastocyst. However, in supporting Mr. Talent and other republicans, she is supporting the currently morally corrupt cabal of Republican leadership in this country. Her spot is being touted as the anti-Michael J. Fox ad. Perhaps she really values those 4-celled, undeveloped blastocysts--if so, maybe she should take a leaf from Mr. Fox's activist' book and lobby for the preservation of the left-over fertilized embryos that are destroyed every year (400,000 or so and counting), rather than supporting a blanket ban on potentially life-saving stem cell research.
Frankly, Ms. Heaton, I have had to shake my head at your dogged political support of the GOP. The hypocrisy they espouse as the moral compass of this country while they accuse the poor of laziness (while the working poor do without decent health insurance for themselves and their families, which of course, include their children), cut social network programs for the most vulnerable of the population, cut education programs that would allow impoverished young people to rise above the lack of opportunity they experience solely on their unfortunate decision to be born to poor parents ...
Let me just say, Ms. Heaton, that I no longer have any desire to support your career. I'm sure there are plenty of hateful, ignorant ditto heads who will think you are simply great ("she is one of us"). Let them support you. I gave your product a neutral rating, simply because I have no desire to lower the ranking of your book simply because it was written by you. This review is solely meant to formally communicate to you, and others, that I cannot stand to see your work any longer--whether it be on television, in movies or in print. I used to be a fan.

Book Description
Nick Curtis is one of the most highly decorated British soldiers ever to serve in Northern Ireland. In this compelling and unique book he graphically portrays his experiences in the Province during the turbulent years of 1969–1976. After surviving nearly 2,000 fired rounds, Curtis's duty as a uniformed officer ended and he was awarded the Military Medal for acts of bravery in the field. But he returned to the Province to become a key figure in undercover operations, liaising closely with such figures as Captain Robert Nairac, himself a legend for his undercover work among the IRA. Hard-hitting, uncompromising and extraordinarily frank, Nick Curtis' dramatic account of his life in Northern Ireland encompasses the extremities of urban civil war, the intrigues of undercover operations, and the political machinations that helped to form both.
