These ski journalists ski hundreds of trails, visit hundreds of hotel rooms, wander through scores of restaurants and bars and dance in dozens of discos to bring readers the real scoop about every major resort in Europe.
Customer Reviews:
The Most Useful Ski Guide I've Ever Found!!.......2005-03-01
This is the third edition of Leocha's ski guide that I've bought. It tells me everything I might think of to ask about each resort. My wife and I rely upon this guide to help make our decisions on where to ski in the Alps before each trip. His mountain and skiing descriptions are right on for all classes of skiers. We've used his recommendations in choosing accomodations and restaurants and haven't been disappointed even once. The very best feature is that it is written so well that we've tried resorts (Arosa, Wengen) that we never considered before and found them to be wonderful.
A very solid skiing guide.......2002-10-14
Ski Europe was a great book for my winter stay in europe. The thing i liked most about it was that it was the only book i needed. It offered all the skiing info i needed for each resort (even a scection in each resort on snowboarding!), but it didn't stop there. Its an all around guide with info on the night life, hotels, and restaurants. it gave concice information about all the aspects of a skiing vacation, which made my off the slope hours much more productive. i strongly recomend this book for any skier or snowboarder, any level.
=Z
Good Resource.......2001-10-29
I live in Munich and use this book often as a reference. It contains very accurate information on lodging, prices, and qualities of the resorts. Very accurately summarizes the differences in the ski experience between the different countries.
Needs more detailed maps of the resorts and slopes with hotels, restaurants, etc. clearly marked. Needs to be more critical of some resorts so the reader can make a better decision about which one to visit.
Covers most major areas in a brief fashion........1998-10-21
Author has included some email and web site information for ski area accomodations, tourist offices, etc, but it just touches the tip of the iceberg.
Verbier, Switzerland, one of the top ski areas in Europe, only gets 5 pages in the book. Does not provide any commentary on accommodations in Verbier other than number of stars in rating and prices. Some other large ski areas get better treatment. The Arlberg region gets 9 pages of coverage.
Book lacks maps of Europe and of ski areas.
Overall the book is a good starting place for researching a trip, but descriptive information is brief and basic. Still this book is the most recently published on the topic as of 10/98, so the currency of the information should be decent.
Germany-bound skiers should skip this book........1998-09-30
Germany-bound skiers should not waste their time on this book. Although Germany has more than 300 winter resorts located in the German Alps, the wooded hills of the Hartz Mountains, the Black Forest, and the Bavarian Forest, Ski Europe, 11th Edition devotes only 5 pages to the entire country. Only two of these pages directly comment on skiing (rather than accomodations, dining, etc.) and they focus only on Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the surrounding area. Even skiing in Spain gets more coverage than Germany in this book!

Book Description
A revised and updated edition of the provocative book from the man Studs Terkel calls "one of the hippest members of Congress."
The subject of widespread attention when first released, including the pages of the New York Times Book Review, Myths of Free Trade provides a front-row seat to the Washington spectacle of corporate lobbying and political intimidation that keeps the free-trade mantra alive as American policy, despite all the evidence of its failure.
U.S. Representative Sherrod Browna leading progressive voice in Congress and a twelve-year veteran of Washington's trade warstakes apart free-trade dogma, myth by myth. His book is an accessible, personal, globe-trotting chronicle, taking the reader from the coffee fields of Nicaragua to the sweatshops of China; from the toxic wastelands on the Mexican border to the halls of Congress.
Described as an "essential primer" by The Progressive and a "voice of truth" by Public Citizen News, this paperback edition includes a fascinating update that describes the 2005 congressional battle over the Central American Free Trade Agreementa battle led by Tom DeLay on one side and Sherrod Brown on the other.

Pandering to the Left-Wing!.......2007-06-12
I honestly read this book with an open mind but found that Brown makes many mistakes usual for someone without an education in economics or another applicable business area. If you are someone with a background in economics, skip this book. It will not make much sense unless you are a socialist, communist, or have fallen for the usual "jobs shipped over seas" myth.
A clear-headed, common-sense analysis of a difficult subjectj.......2007-05-29
Sherrod Brown has written in plain English an easy-to-understand explanation
of the myths that the American public has been spoon-fed on free trade by the usual suspects, those who profit by it,their lackeys and errand boys, and the editorial pages of the daily newspapers. Brown lays it all out in a book that is filled with common sense and clear-headed analysis.
Pulp International Economics.......2007-03-28
If this book had as much evidence and proof as it does assertions and assumptions then it would be at least respectable. This book is similar to Jagdish Bhagwati's "In Defense of Globalization" simply because they both use little to no actual evidence and both make broad sweeping claims that fall well outside the realm of what they have attempted to prove (despite both books arguing against one another). For example "Myhts of Free Trade" has 8 chapters, each with a title that sums up the thrust of each chapter. However, Brown then goes into detail about how great his battles have been on capitol hill and fighting against the evils of the Bush administration, and Multinational corporations. But he offers few statistics, little data, but lots of out of context quotations. He will imply that a piece of legislation because "it hurts the steel industry" ,for example, without ever telling us how it hurts the steel industry or proving that it does in fact hurt the steel industry, or even showing us evidence that it could hurt the steel industry beyond implying that the U.S. steel industry faces "unfair" foreign steel manufacturing. In chapter 2 he tries to persuade the reader that free trade is not linked with the war on terrorism, a claim that I thought would be easy enough to prove, but he relies on simple assertions that it is not correlated, but no proof, then goes on to discussion authorization of fast track authority and the showdown between Democrats and Republicans.
Clearly Senator Brown has not written this book for mass consumption, but rather rather for his target audience, the Union workers, environmentalists, human rights audience and the rest of the anti-free trade crowd. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that, But don't take this book too seriously, if you're looking for a good solid critique of free trade in the modern era, don't bother buying this book.
On the other hand if you want to buy a book that reinforces your opinion that republicans and free trade generally are bad (along with the corporations, WTO, IMF, World Bank) then by all means buy this book.
Personally, I find this book insufferable not only because of the lack of actual evidence, but also because all Senator Brown talks about is his time in congress and how much of a crusader he is for anti-free trade legislation and view points. After all who doesn't enjoy reading about the individual battles of the house of representatives from a democrat under a republican majority? I mean if he's a Senator he is clearly smart, and if he wrote a book he must know what he is talking about, so why should we question what he says?
Another Lou Dobbs Book.......2006-06-05
Congressperson Sherrod Brown (D-OH) is another Yale alumni (think Bush, Kerry, Porter Goss,& Bob Woodward) with a degree in Russian Studies who is currently running against Republican Mike DeWine for DeWine's seat as U.S. Senator. DeWine, an unCatholic avid supporter of Adolf Bush and global Nazism, is facing a challenger whose support comes from Labor as well corporations. Brown's challenge is the most serious among the challengers from other parties - the Democrats, Libertarians and Greens - seeking to unseat the statist DeWine and retrieve Ohio from America's slide down the slippery slope to Nazi Germany.
This book was no doubt ghost-written by Brown's interns rather than his journalist wife Connie Schultz - it has no bibliography. It does have an index. But that's as far as it goes in trying to be a real book. It's more like a rant in the genre of Lou Dobbs, although like a Jehovah's Witness book, it will cite a source within the text minus the page number it came from: "The distinguished American economist John Kenneth Galbraith said about the 'Wealth of Nations', 'It is much celebrated by the ministry of the righteous right, few of whom have read it. Were they to do so - disapproval of the corporate form, approval of a wealth tax - they would be greatly shocked'". That's it. No page number. I could go to Galbraith's book, then where to look? I hope Galbraith's book has an index, then I could at least look up the pages on which Adam Smith is cited. Then perhaps I can find this quote and see what else Galbraith had to say on the topic.
That said, this book begins with a four and half-paged 'Introduction' followed by seven chapters titled 'Myth 1: Americans Believe in Free Trade', 'Myth 2: Free-Trade Agreements Are Necessary to Fight the War on [Freedom]', 'Myth 3: Free Trade Is an Extension of American Values Abroad', 'Myth 4: Free Trade Leaves Most People Better Off - In Rich and Poor Nations Alike', 'Myth 5: Free Trade Will Bring Democracy, Human Rights, and Freedom to Authoritarian Nations', 'Myth 6: The North American Free Trade Agreement Has Been a Success', and 'Myth 7: Free Trade Is a Great American Tradition'. Chapter eight is titled 'A Model for Fair Trade and a Call to Action'.
Brown is confused over the term "free trade". When corporatists use that term to describe their economic fascism, Brown uses that term too rather than "economic fascism". In fact, the two terms are dichotomies. But by ignoring the creation of the corporation by the State and its resulting status as offspring of the state - thereby just as inefficient and bureaucratic as its parent, Brown is telling only half the story. The problem is corporations AND its parent - the State.
As Adam Smith knew well - in a free market, there are no corporations; corporations are creations of the state - they are "artificial persons" that are granted Constitutional rights by its parent. The problem is NOT free trade, which is not practiced anywhere on this planet - but corporatism camouflaging itself under the false rhetoric of free trade. This state-generated problem is one I hope Brown will address as a Congressperson. This book should sit on one's shelf beside a copy of Paul H. Weaver's "The Suicidal Corporation". And I wish Brown good fortune in unseating the Nazi-American in his Senatorial race. But don't be the other side of the same coin.
Adam Smith and David Ricardo would oppose globalization.......2006-01-20
Brown,a Democrat and a liberal, has written a very good book on the severe deficiencies(for instance, the vast number of workers ,who obtain jobs in second and third world countries as a result of outsourcing and globalization, are paid incomes that are far too small to buy any American exports at all.The result is the creation of additional excess supply and decreases in the standard of living everywhere brought on by deficiencies in aggregate purchasing power)that exist as a result of globalization. The same deficiencies were noted by Ross Perot in three books written in 1992,by Pat Buchanan in 1998 in his "The Great Betrayal",and by Lou Dobbs in his recent "Exporting America:How Corporate Greed is Shipping American Jobs Overseas".All three are authentic conservatives who have broken with a Republican party establishment that has, since 1978, substituted the libertarian anarchist globalization arguments of Grover Norquist,Murray Rothbard,Milton Friedman,Ayn Rynd,Ludwig von Mises,Fredrich von Hayek,Arthur Laffer, and George Gilder for those of conservatives such as Adam Smith,David Ricardo,George Washington,Alexander Hamilton,Douglas MacArthur,Dwight D Eisenhower, and ,yes,Richard Nixon.Unfortunately, the title of the book was poorly chosen. There is a sound and valid free trade position that opposes the special interests of oligopolistic industries.A better title for the book would have been"Globalization is not Free Trade:The Myth of Globalization".Authentic free trade is based on comparative advantage, not the absolute advantage that is the foundation of the libertarian anarchist argument for globalization.Unfortunately,B does not deal with the fact that Smith and Ricardo would be opponents of globalization(Only Dobbs mentions this fact).Globalization is not free trade,as free trade is automatically defined within the context of the theory of comparative advantage. It is of vital importance that anyone concerned about the misrepresentation of the authentic free trade position read Part IV, chapter II,pp.420-440 of The Wealth of Nations. For instance,Smith is opposed to tariffs (and quotas)only if it is the case that the purpose of the tariff is purely protectionist(sought by a special interest group of oligopolistic manufacturers)in nature.Smith would support retaliatory tariffs against countries engaging in obvious protectionist behavior, such as violations of GATT,manipulation of international currency values and/or massive dumping, such as China,India, and Mexico, as long as there is some probability that the counter tariff"...will procure the repeal of the high duties or prohibitions complained of"(Smith,p.435,Modern Library edition).Only if there is no probability of getting the offending country to stop its behavior would Smith forgo retaliation. Finally,Smith is a moderate supporter of the revenue tariff,on balance. He imposed such tariffs when he became a customs official in Scotland. We can end this review by taking Jack Kemp as an example of a conservative who has been completely misled/confused by the substitution of the libertarian, athiest, anarchist arguments of the two von's,Mises and Hayek, for the moral, conservative, deist arguments of Adam Smith.Libertarian Anarchism has nothing to do with conservatism. These philosophies are completely opposed on political, social, and economic grounds. This was the case at the beginnings of our Republic.Washington,Hamilton,Madison,Jay,Franklin, and Adams are the conservatives.Mason,Randolph,Henry, and Paine are the libertarians.

Book Description
This monograph deals with relatively simple examples of the theory of optimal control which, nevertheless are far from being trivial. It deals with cases where optimal control either does not exist or is not unique, cases where optimality conditions are insufficient of degenerate, or where extremum problems in the sense of Tikhonov and Hadamard are ill-posed, and other situations. A formal application of classical optimisation methods in such cases either leads to wrong results or has no effect. The detailed analysis of these "bad" examples should provide a better understanding of the modern theory of optimal control and the practical difficulties of solving extremum problems.
Book Description
More than ten years after her death, Donna Reed remains a cultural icon, loved and scorned. She personified the ideal homemaker on television. In the movies she was the archetypal sweetheart and wife. The only time she played a fallen woman, in From Here to Eternity, she won an Academy Award. Her work has lived on in saturation reruns of The Donna Reed Show and the holiday classic It's a Wonderful Life.
But who was Donna Reed? Perhaps no celebrity of her symbolic importance is so little known. Moving from the backroads of Iowa to the mansions of Bel Air, Jay Fultz goes in search of the woman behind the image.
In Search of Donna Reed reveals a woman whose intelligence and force of character often put her at odds with the roles she portrayed both on and off screen. Reed, always angered by the treatment of women in Hollywood, turned political activist in middle age, confronting for the first time the arrogance of power. She was, said writer Barbara Avedon, a feminist before there was a feminist vocabulary. But she eludes any label.
This first biography of Donna Reed also contains the first extended discussion of her television show. The personal richness that Reed brought to her television role has been filtered out in the caricature perpetuated by pop critics. In the media "Donna Reed" is Donna Stone distorted as a female-manqu who wears pearls and high heels around the house. But Donna Reed's long hold on viewers depends on irreducible qualities that have nothing to do with this fixed image, as Fultz suggests.
He follows her development from Iowa farm girl to apprentice in Hollywood to mature juggler of the demands of family and career to antiwar activist. Drawing on Reed's letters and on interviews, Fultz looks for what was real in a very private person without discarding what is romantic in any pursuit of a public one. He shows why the rich and principled life of Donna Reed matters in this more cynical time.
Customer Reviews:
Good read for fans of Donna Reed.......2007-05-15
Not a typical Hollywood "tell all", this book is really geared towards fans of Donna Reed. Though very informational, the writing lacks professional polish that perhaps a more experienced biographer would've been able to use to spark it up a little.
Mr. Fultz: I only wish I could have gone with you!.......2006-12-25
I rediscovered Donna Reed less than a month ago. I had forgotten just how good she was in It's a Wonderful Life. The more I saw, the more I looked. The more I looked, the more I realized just how far the public perception of her is from reality. I found a copy of Jay Fultz's "In Search Of Donna Reed" online and ordered it. By the time it arrived I had become immersed in IAWL facts and all I could find out about this woman who had seemed to appear and shine so brilliantly for a moment and then disappear. My only memory of her show was that it seemed loved and hated-I never saw it, so you can guess where my dad stood. Soon I would learn that, for some strange reason she was, and still is, the undeserving victim of a very determined slander campaign. I picked up the book and met Miss Mullenger. She was the sweetest little girl who just seemed to get better with age. Her performance in It's a Wonderful Life is so much like the Donnabelle Mullenger I met in this book-bringing the sense of quality that, I think is one of the reasons it endures. She is the reason Mr. Stewart's anguish is real, because I can see it reflected on the very real face of Donna's Mary. The hurt she felt at his hands two years later was one answer I was seeking, they had such perfect "chemistry" in IAWL, why is this the only film they both star in? According to Jay, she would say to "ask Miss Allyson."
Two days after I met her, I felt as if a near and dear relative was at death's door. Even though I KNEW that twenty years had passed, reading (at work) Mr. Fultz's account of the death of this remarkable woman awakened in me a sense of loss so powerful that I had to finish reading it in my car...
While looking for a way to contact Mr. Fultz, I came across what was called a review of this book in a popular magazine (I won't say it's name, but it covers the movie and TV industry) . The hate in it for Donna and for anyone who would praise her was simply appalling. They didn't even try to discredit the research, but rather selected biased facts from her life and even lied in a subtle way to attempt to trivialize her contributions. I now realize that those who don't like Donna Reed are almost always those who don't know her. They mock her TV show as "bland" but never say how many thousands of troubled children must have found refuge in her "home" each week, as evident by the letters she received from a tiny fraction of the 35 million plus viewers at her peak. We see a Donna Reed who fought studio and sponsor desires to maintain the stereotype she fought against in the movie industry, and that her fight for women's rights cost her more than many who have gotten better press at far less personal cost. In Search of Donna Reed is backed by over twenty five pages of detailed notes of sources: interviews, documents, letters, an amazing amount of material that show Mr. Fultz to be a dedicated researcher fully capable of producing an honest account that is worthy of the memory of Donna Reed, even if it is a labor of love-or perhaps because it is.
Discovering Donna Is A Joy Ride.......2005-06-18
I thoroughly enjoyed reading along as Jay Fultz sought out Donna Reed. Did it answer all my questions about her? No. But that was part of the guilty-pleasure appeal of this book. I learned things about Donna herself and her life and career than I previously knew, and it was a pleasing experience to just sit back and enjoy the ride without becoming a backseat driver. Fultz's respectful excitement in the process of "discovery" comes across in every chapter. A charming, intelligent retrospective worthy of Miss Reed's memory.
Perfection!!!!.......2003-03-26
A biography of a truly beautiful woman! Some celebrities went trough life with everything handed to them on a silver plate, not Donna Reed, she realy had to work for everything she stood for back then and today, not only has a superstar but also as a human being. From her early years in Denison Iowa to her movie and televison career to her activist days to being a devoted mother and wife, get to know about some of her life struggules and pleasures in Jay Fultz's A-1 bio of a wonderfully private person that didn't let fame get the best of her. Under that star image is a down-to-earth extremely intoxicating person with a very charitable heart and giving nature.
In my heart she definataly was one of the greatest woman that ever walked God's green earth and is the closest thing to human perfection!.....Rob J.
Perfection!!!.......2003-03-04
...
Ever since I saw the movie "It's a wonderful life" 9 years ago, I have been captivated by this truly amazing woman! Since then I have purchase many items about Donna Reed Mullenger, her biography (In seach of Donna Reed, which was truly a work of art, and I sure can relate to the feeling Mr.Fultz has for her!) also many movies staring this wonderful creature. I only wish I would have known her personnally...
Anyway, I sure would like to see more DVD movies available to the public, staring the beautiful Miss Reed.
Book Description
Edward of Caernarfon is best known today for his disastrous military defeat in 1314 at Bannockburn, where his English army was defeated by a vastly inferior Scottish force led by Robert the Bruce, leading to Scottish Independence. This catastrophe was one of many in a disastrous career marked by indolence, vengefulness, vacillation in relationships with France, deranged policies at home, and constitutional wrangling, ultimately brought to an end by a minor insurgency led by his vindictive wife and her paramour, a disaffected baron. Roy Martin Haines examines Edward II’s eventful life and the more salient periods of his reign, situating the monarch in the context of the "empire" he inherited and the aftermath of his unregretted death.

Scholarly, exhaustive, & painstakingly researched.......2003-08-08
Roy Martin Haines is a life member Clare Hall, Cambridge University, a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, and the author of numerous scholarly works concerning British history. In King Edward II: His Life, His Reign, And Its Aftermath, 1284-1330, Haines presents a scholarly, exhaustive, painstakingly researched, in-depth, and authoritative account of the days and rule of Edward of Caernarfon (1284-1327). King Edward II inherited a war with Scotland, yet his lack of skill in the art of war would eventually precipitate Scotland's independence. Ultimately, Edward would also become the first anointed king of England to be dethroned since Ethelred in 1013. King Edward II is an informed, informative, and very highly recommended contribution to personal and academic British History & Biography reference collections.
