Book Description
San Francisco was recently voted America's favorite city by the readers of Conde Nast Traveler, and why not? Few destinations offer such diversity. Hidden San Francisco and Northern California features the author's opinionated reviews of both the worthy and the merely infamous in the City by the Bay as well as commentary on the redwoods, the coast, the wine country, and the Sierras.
Customer Reviews:
good resource, but not for first-time visitors.......2003-04-14
This guidebook has some positive features, but ones that would probably best serve someone already familiar with the layout of San Francisco. First, the book divides its sections according to neighborhood without much integration between them or of the city as a whole. This is acceptable if one is already familiar with San Francisco's geography, but would frustrate someone trying to get a sense of how the different parts of San Francisco fit together. Indeed, the only attempt to present what one should consider covering in a trip to San Francisco seems to be a scanty two-page afterthought.
Second, the book does not offer much help as a resource when actually touring the city. The walking tours lack interesting detail about history or architecture and instead quickly note interesting sites. The maps are lousy, as one has to already know where the neighborhoods are to make sense of the maps within each section. The maps also lack detail, as few of the sites listed in the text are actually marked on the maps. The information regarding dining and lodging is frustratingly coded from budget to ultra-deluxe-instead of just listing prices in the text, the guidebook requires readers to decipher code by flipping back to the introduction where the terms are explained or to memorize them.
That being said, the guide offers much for other users. The walking tours cover interesting ground, the guide highlights less frequented sites, and useful information such as websites for attractions of interest are included. Thus, I would recommend using this guidebook at home and sketching out where you want to go, but leave it at home when you go (as its bulk is more useful at home to decide where you want to go, but of limited value once you are actually there). In particular, the book is a great resource for Bay Area residents to consult regarding parts of the city they may wish to brush up on or to lead guests to less obvious sites in San Francisco that often slip one's mind.
In comparision testing, this book was paramount.......2001-01-05
This guide scored an A+! Every place it suggested was great, and the information was always helpful. We had this book, Lets Go, Zagat San Fran (which didn't even have many of the recommended restaurants listed), and Fodors. This one was by far the best. By then end of our 2 week trip, we had stopped using all the other books. I ended up giving all but this one away. The only thing I would change is the maps. They were not very detailed. I would recommend getting this book and then a detailed San Fran and surrounding area map from a gas station when you get there.
Very dependable guide book!.......1999-05-26
On my first visit to Northern California, I depended on this guide for help in choosing lodging, restaurants and places to visit. As a result, my vacation was very enjoyable! Recommendations were very solid, and arranged in a logical order. The focus on out-of-the-way spots was very valuable and helped us spend time on the most unique and rewarding activities. I can't wait to spend more time in Northern California, and will definitely take my well-worn copy of "Hidden...." along.
An excellent resource for unknown California.......1999-05-20
We used this book on a trip around Hwy 49 to the East side of Yosemite. This book was a great resource for amazing sites and places to stay along the way.

The second edition of Managing Across Borders: The Transnational Solution, by Christopher A. Bartlett of the Harvard Business School and Sumantra Ghoshal of the London Business School, is a dynamic update of the authors' pioneering research into management on a global stage. Even more timely now than when it was originally conceived over a decade ago, the book--which was previously published in nine languages and adapted into a video program--remains singularly focused on the ways that this important organizational form is changing the playing field for all types of corporate enterprises. Along with their original look at the relevant operations of nine companies, however, the authors have now also incorporated a new section called "The Transformational Challenge," which charts how several other firms have been implementing the concepts that were described in their initial work. By fully describing these additional examples drawn from today's emerging international business community, as well as including a new "application handbook" so readers can more effectively translate their ideas into actions, Bartlett and Ghoshal have improved their advice on topics such as competition, flexibility, diversity, and commitment. -- Howard Rothman
Book Description
Widely acclaimed for its perceptive insights into the management of companies operating in an international environment, Managing Across Borders has established itself as a landmark book. Bartlett and Ghoshal describe the emergence of a revolutionary corporate form-the transnational-and reveal how the nature of the global competitive game has fundamentally changed.
"Highly readable…Valuable lessons for companies in a wide range of industries and sizes-indeed, almost any organization operating several different businesses across borders."
-The Financial Times
"A fascinating book …The conclusions certainly break away from the…perceived wisdom about the factors needed for success in global markets."
-Management Today
"Managing Across Borders makes clear that success in global strategy is as much a function of the ability to organize and manage as it is the ability to create a sound strategy. Bartlett and Ghoshal make an important and highly practical contribution in a book that represents the leading edge of thinking on this important subject."
-Michael E. Porter, Bishop William Lawrence University Professor, Harvard Business School, and author of Competitive Strategy
AUTHORBIO:
Christopher Bartlett is the Daewoo Professor of Business Administration and Chair of the Program for Global Leadership at Harvard Business School.
Sumantra Ghoshal is Professor of Strategic and International Management at the London Business School.

Excellent source.......2005-08-06
An amazing book detailing the differences between global, international, and multinational companies while providing a new innovative way to approach business, the transnational way. Great for students and professionals alike.
An appreciative book that looks forward into the future.......2002-03-17
Now in an updated second edition, Managing Across Borders: The Transnational Solution by Christopher Bartlett (Daewoo Professor of Business Administration, Harvard Business School) and Sumantra Ghoshal (Professor of Strategic and International Management, The London Business School) is an informative introduction to the "transnational corporation", the new corporate phenomena of the interconnected global and digital age, which stretches its competition worldwide and fundamentally rewrites the nature of doing business. A fascinating, appreciative book that looks forward into the future, Managing Across Borders is highly recommended reading for anyone seeking to understand and capitalize on what the 21st century business community is evolving for purposes of international trade in a truly global and increasingly "borderless" age!
Pathbreaking book.......2000-05-13
This seminal book has been a part of my professional library for almost a decade, now. I am an Associate Professor in International Business and teach the subjects covered in this book. From this book a number of concepts have grown which continues to dominate the discussion of global management. Let me jus mention a few: administrative heritage, which is the idea, that the organisational structure of multidomestic enterprises reflects the historical period they were established in - especially with respect to the regime of coordination and communication. For instance, whereas the typical american firm entering Europe after 2ww would follow a strategy of tight operational control (given the business circumstances of this firm) Phillips, a multinational from the 19th century would display a strategy of much more delegation and subsidary autonomy.
Another concept is that of transnational companies - firms which simultaneously seek to adjust to local circumstances and enjoy the benefits of global integration. This idea remains a hot issue in global management even today - more than a decade after this book was published.

Basic Cat Care.......2002-01-28
I picked this book up at the pet store right before I got my first cat. This book gives a good over-view for someone who is a new cat owner. There is plenty of information on cat care and training. Also good information on cats living with dogs and children. The big downfall of this book is that it is badly translated from German. And it looses alot in the translation, making it hard to read. Some parts had to be read over, because they did not make sense due to the translation problem. I feel the publisher should have checked this over more carefully, because it makes the book, which has alot of good information, very difficult to read.

THE Encyclopedia for ground cover options.......2000-03-25
A neighbor lent this book to me when we first moved here 3 years ago and -- although I have an extensive gardener's library -- I have not been able to bring myself to return it. It is the single-most comprehensive source for information on non-grass ground covers I have ever found. Practical, well-written and well-photographed, the book is apparently out of stock at the publisher. PLEASE BRING IT BACK INTO CIRCULATION!

Customer Reviews:
Very superficial.......2001-02-21
I have to agree with the previous comment, and i gave the book one more star because fortunately i found the book heavily discounted and did not have to pay the inflated list price. The photos are nice, but this doesn't even qualify as a coffee table book (it's too small). The author seemingly hanged out in Southern Spain visiting her bohemian friends and acquaintances and taking many pretty photos. The commentary is quite lame, and the author has a slight pontificating tone when detailing the Spanish decorating styles. I think it was George Bernard Shaw who said that generalization is the prerogative of the weak of mind, or something to that effect. The author falls under that category when stating that the new generations of Spaniards would rather go for plastic, vinyl and Formica and get rid of old, moth-ridden furniture. In her visit to Spain she obviously did not visit any of the multiple antique stores in any major city. Had she seen the prices that some of those moth-ridden pieces of junk command, and in the unlikely event she understands the laws of offer and demand, maybe she would have refrained from making such a blanket statement.
Anyway, this is a superficial book, certainly not worth the list price.
Quite frankly, a waste of my hard-earned money........1999-04-29
Hilliard and Miller do little more than compile an itty-bitty picture booklet of mediocre, vacation-quality photographs of southern Spanish homes, and tout the whole mess "a book on style." Commentary was utterly lacking, and what the authors did include was pseudo-arty and condescending. If I had been able to browse this book at a real bookstore, I never would have bought it, especially at the full price. This book's only value is in teaching the lesson that the online bookshopping experience can mislead the unwary buyer into making a purchase she or he will regret. Read the reviews, and review books you buy! As for this piece of trash, save your money for a REAL book, not a pretend... one like this is.

Book Description
In this fascinating biography, Alan L. Gansberg reveals the man behind the public face, his many memorable roles among more than 100 films, and his struggle to find steady work in Hollywood again.
Customer Reviews:
Fine Biography.......2005-04-12
Edward G. Robinson seemed tough, but he had a sensitive side too that was most obviously expressed in his love of modern art; his collection of Renoirs alone was for many years the most impressive West of the Mississippi. He was said to have bought a masterpuece every time he made another film for Warner Brothers, to reward himself with some beauty for dipping himself in dreck. And yet Robinson's films still startle with their magnificent energy and passion. They too are works of art every bit as much as his Soutines and his Picassos.
He was not a ladies man in the traditional sense of the term, but as Gansberg's fine biography shows, he was interested in all forms of beauty. And part of the reason he could so well play obsessed characters (such as his films with Joan Bennett in the noir cycle) is that he too was prone to obsession.
The blacklist (or more strictly speaking, the graylist) affected his career badly. For some time offers of employment dried up, even though he was never a Communist or anywhere near it. The mere idea is laughable. Cecil B. De Mille of all people, the director and producer often thought of as a rightwing nut case, was the one who gave Robinson a solid job playing in his own remake of the TEN COMMANDMENTS. No other mogul in Hollywood would have had the balls to cast Robinson so promimently, not at that time when men walked scared of HUAC and its minions. It took a compassionate conservative to restore Robinson to the high echelon of film stardom to which he rightfully belonged.
Robinson's own book, ALL MY YESTERDAYS, was famous for revealing so little about its subject. Author Gansburg gets right down to ground zero with Robinson's psyche, exploring his ups as well as his well chronicled downs. I wish I had been a fly on the wall when Gansburg interviewed some of his many Among his many films, TWO WEEKS IN ANOTHER TOWN, THE VIOLENT MEN, SCARLET STREET, SOYLENT GREEN and NIGHTMARE have all undergone recent critical revision, while DOUBLE INDEMNITY
< KEY LARGO, and THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW remain American masterpieces of the highest order.
"This was a man.".......2004-10-06
This book, except for the Epilogue, was written in 1983, ten years after Edward G. Robinson's death. The author, Alan Gansberg, therefore had the opportunity to interview a number of key friends and relatives to gain insight into the man, and we are richer for it. Emanuel Goldenberg, aka Edward G. Robinson, was defined by his strong Jewish upbringing and the words of his father, who taught his children to improve themselves and to "Always live beyond your means. It will make you work harder." Robinson took both pieces of advice to heart. He was a life-long learner, a tremendous workhorse, and made the best of every talent he had. In his early efforts to get into acting, he sold himself with the line that he was "not good on face value, but good on stage value." And he delivered, got noticed, and found himself, in 1915, in the play "Under Fire," a war melodrama where Robinson played three different parts. The play opened first in Boston, and Robinson received a glowing review in the "Boston Globe." Shortly thereafter, the play went to New York, and Robinson again got good notices in "Vanity Fair" and "The Theatre Magazine." This was the turning point for Robinson. At 22, he dropped out of CCNY, bought a new wardrobe, and turned his full attention to his new career. And this book takes you through every aspect of that brilliant career, including the awful times of the early 1950s, where Robinson was forced to appear (twice) before HUAC to clear his name against anonymous charges that he was a communist sympathizer and even a Russian spy. Heading up the right wing and enforcing graylisting and blacklisting was the head of the Screen Actors Guild at that time, none other than Ronald Reagan, who knew which way the wind was blowing and made certain his career was never in danger. This book puts Reagan in a bad light as a manipulative, self-serving, self-righteous fellow with little compassion. The consequences of Reagan's indifference to the suffering of his fellow actors are apparent in Robinson's and others' suffering, including that of John Garfield. Robinson, like millions of others, was nothing more than an FDR liberal all his life, and wasn't shy about it. For this he was punished, and, in the Epilogue, Gansberg draws parallels to today's repressive national climate.
I have always enjoyed Edward G. Robinson and am grateful to Turner Classic Movies for broadcasting Robinson movies from his Warner Brother years. Robert Osborne, the host of TCM, mentioned this book at the recent screening of "Larceny, Inc.," a 1942 "flop" that actually is pretty entertaining today, if a bit tiresome.
The book has an excellent Appendix listing all the stage, screen, television, and radio appearances of Robinson. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to read about the life and times of a great actor and a warm, engaged person. Robinson's biggest fault, which he himself admitted, was that he wasn't a great fathter to his troubled son, Manny. That comes across in the book too. "This was a man" is a line from the Antony soliloquy in "Julius Caesar," which Robinson used in his first audition, in 1912, for the Sargent School, later the Academy of Dramatic Arts. The soliloquy describes Robinson himself.
