Terribly deficient.......2006-06-05
This book is the perfect example of what can happen when publisher's deadlines rush the author, resulting in a poor end product. Further, the editing in this guide seems to be sorely lacking. The book is full of gramattical errors and irregular sentences, many in broken English.
All of these problems could be overlooked if the guide accomplished what it claims. One glaring example of the haphazard organization of this work is the utter lack of clearly useful information and the inclusion of near worthless facts. For example, the "New Residents" section of the guide includes an odd commentary on Texas' Concealed Carry law while information relating to cable, phone, and internet service is absent. In the "Restaurants" section, there is only one Tex-Mex restaurant listed. That's right; one Tex-Mex restaurant merits listing in a city that is 40% hispanic, with a higher number of restaurants per capita than any other city in America.
Then, there are the factual errors. The guide states that teenagers who get driver's licenses in Texas can only drive to and from home, and then, only when someone over 21 is riding with them. If only this were the case. The fact that this is factually incorrect is excusable; the fact that this is included in a guide to Dallas is utterly incomprehensible.
Finally, the author of this guide seems to have a very negative opinion of Dallas. Whether this is a byass of the author or the intent of the Atlanta-based publisher is unknown. However, when the author states or quotes that Dallas is an "ugly city," that Dallas has "severe racial problems," and that Dallas is "utterly flat," it should indicate that perhaps someone with a more neutral stance should write a guide to the city.
DALLAS.......2006-05-10
This is a very comprehensive guide: it really disects Dallas. There is even a section on street names and their origins! I am very familiar with Dallas and was impressed with how well this guide gets Dallas, especially the shopping section, which quite frankly to Dallas natives is a full contact sport. The discriptions on Northpark and the Galleria, as well as Highland Park Village is very good. The section on hotels and restaurants is also excellent. I really can't think of an area not covered in this guide, whether you are on your first visit to Big D or a native, this guide will not disappoint and you'll learn a great deal about this singular city.

Great, easy to read book........2007-06-27
Does not get too bogged down in details and tells you what you need to know. at the same time, if you want to know the details, this book gives you a helping hand and points you to places where you can become even more knowledgable.
KHALID, from Kuwait.......2007-05-30
I have tried a lot of investing books but never been so lucky to have one of this kind. a very neat explanation and step by step guide for novel investors. I would recommend this book for any one who would like to step his or her first steps toward right investing career. a second step is always little easier than the first one, I would like you to read and understand what Pat Dorsey is trying to explain to you and then you may expand your knowledge with more in-depth finance/investing books.
Good luck for your investing.
good book.......2007-04-20
I bought this book because I wanted to understand every detail of fundamentals. Author did not describe all lines that are in income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow and he jumps around a little bit. I think book has useful reminders how to better read SEC filings and what to look for. Companies author mentions are in completely different place today and that gives us all reminder that things are not written in stone and changes comes quickly. Writting useful book on this topic is not an easy task, so I would recommend this book as supplemental reading. You might find here some useful information.
Excellent Book For People Comfortable With Math.......2007-04-03
Dorsey is one of the people behind the Morningstar system for evaluating mutual funds, stocks and electronically traded funds - the system that has made Morningstar one of the most respected names in investing.
Dorsey presents the nitty-gritty of investing in this book. Most of the book is very understandable, and is the perfect book for anyone wanting to learn how to invest effectively in the stock market. There is probably no better general introduction to investing on the market.
The only difficulty is the material from chapters 3 - 6, where Dorsey explains the math and concepts behind all of the letters you see when you look at market information (like P/E Ratio, P/S Ratio, ROI, ROE, etc.). It can be a bit intimidating, but (a) you can read the book and skip these chapters with no problem, and (b) it is worth the effort to at least look at the math, since Dorsey tells you what figures are helpful, what figures are not, what figures are very important in evaluating an investment, and what figures are misleading.
Before you invest $10 in the market, spend the money on this book. Your portfolio will love you for it.
Book that will give you basis for your decision.......2007-04-02
This is by far the best stock market book I read. I read a lot of good books, Intelligent Investor, One up on wall street. The Warren Buffett Way, The Essays of Warren Buffett, The little book that beats the market, and this is by far the most helpful ccause it guides you step by step and it really goes into details. Most of the books just narrates with generalities. I really like the part where it teaches you how to look look at the income statement, balance sheet and cash flow, how to compute the future cash flow and get its present value and how to compute the intrinsic value. After discusing the procedures, it completes it with real life example the goes tru step by step. After each chapter, theres a summary. Highly Recommended!

Designer dogs are mutts sold for expensive prices. They are not a breed, because breeds must conform to certain specifications- size, shape, temperament, and so forth. When you purchase a designer dog, you are effectivly buying a lottery ticket to what may either be the puppy you have been promised, or a genetic nightmare. When dogs of two completely different breeds are bred, you can have NO idea on what the puppies will look like. You can't guarentee what the coat will look like, how large or small they will be, what their attitude will be like, or whether or not they will have a plethora of genetic problems.
Because of this, thousand of designer dogs are abandoned to shelters when their owners realize that the dog was not what the breeder had promised them.
RESPONSIBLE BREEDERS DO NOT BREED DESIGNER DOGS!
If you want a dog of a specific cross, look at your local humane society! There are mutts abounds there, and they have been tested for health and temperament problems. Go to [...], and you can even search by type of breed for dogs and cats near your home.
Contribute by saving an animal for [...]$ instead of helping overpopulation by spending 500$ on a puppy whose future you can't be able to predict.

A condensed, informative manual for the new puppy owner........1997-12-09
This book is a comprehensive manual of practical information for the beginning or novice pet owner. Ms. Agresta presents her material in an organized fashion, starting with the history and development of the breed, from its origin to the Labrador retriever today. She speaks from a personal point of view, reflecting her years of experience distilled down to a brief form.
All the basics are covered, with helpful drawings and photos in support. She covers health care, first aid, orthopedic problems, and other practical issues. A wide range of breed examples are presented, representing various ages and types. The third section of the book includes chapters written by experts in their own fields, addressing basic training in various fields, such as obedience, field trials, hunt tests, herding, and agility, and most importantly, the Labrador retriever in the family home. Each subject is presented briefly, but positively, with information, encouragement and guidance to the reader. The author offers lists of recommended reading covering a wide range of subjects. I would recommend giving it to new puppy owners.

Book Description
In this unique biography of the world’s greatest lover, there is much unpublished material to reveal the real Valentino, a man who was sexually attracted to other men and whose relationships with women brought heartbreak and disaster.
Valentino was far less ashamed of his sexuality than he was afraid of being trapped by the image of his public persona. Yet it was his persistent need to prove his “manhood” that contributed to his early death.
Customer Reviews:
Was He?.......2007-05-10
Bret, David. "Valentino: A Dream of Desire", Carroll & Graf, 2007.
Was He?
Amos Lassen and Literary Pride
Valentino has been dead a very long time but his mystique lives boldly. Rumor has it that he was perhaps the most beautiful and most mysterious man ever to be in the movies. Both sexes swooned at his sight and when he suddenly died at the age of 31 there were riots and suicides. What was it about this man that caused people to behave as they did? David Bret has tried to figure that out n his new biography, "Valentino: A Dream of Desire". Using previously unpublished material he reveals that Valentino was only attracted to other men ad that the affairs he had with women not only meant nothing but caused heartbreak and, many times, disaster. In fact Valentino was at home with his sexuality. Valentino rose above the popular stereotype of the [...] which characterized [...] men in the 1920's as effeminate degenerates. He was masculine and built large and excelled at sports. Bret maintains that it was Valentino's constant need to prove that he was indeed a man that killed him.
If you like reading about celebrities, this is a book for you. However if your favorite stats have to be heterosexual, don't read this. Bret names people and uses citations for his sources that show that "The Sheik" enjoyed having sex with men. Bret researched thoroughly so that he could make this statement and it is the research that hurts the smooth flow this book might have had. Te book comes off as sensational and somewhat shallow despite the research. Yet it is an important book for those who want to have some background on the star.
Valentino was Latin and Latins are characterized as lovers. With Latins, appearance means everything and with most Latins anything goes sexually. Why we care about Valentino's sexuality I really don't know but evidently it is important to some. Supposedly Bret managed to get h shads on Valentino's diary and he quotes from it freely. I have read elsewhere that the very same diary is a fake, written by someone trying to discredit the man. Bret says that Valentino was not only [...] but an exhibitionist as well. I mean who really cares? The man is dead, his lovers are dead and those that swooned for him are dead. The show is over, the coffin is in the ground and life goes on. If Valentino had slept with all of the people that Bret maintains, he would never have had rime to make a movie. If Valentino was [...] and had to hide, then I feel bad for him but why should I concern myself with it now? Valentino was taken from this world 75 years ago. That is a very long time. Let the man rest in peace.
Homophobes Beware!.......2005-07-21
If you are the kind of person (and there are a lot of your ilk out there) who can respect a celebrity only if you can believe he is heterosexual and only if you aren't subjected to details about his sexual life if he isn't, then DREAM OF DESIRE is a must-to-avoid for you. Save yourself the need to write a hateful, vitriolic review. David Bret names names, cites sources and leaves no doubt that Rudolph Valentino enjoyed having sexual relations with other men. (However, his contention that Valentino was gay and not bisexual is less convincing.) There is a wealth of information in this biography, and not just about sex . . . Bret's research is so thorough, and his descriptions so detailed, you'd think he had been there at the elbows of Valentino and his wife Natacha Rambova while these events were taking place. That said, I would NOT call this book well-written. Bret's writing tends toward the sensationalistic and shallow, and he contradicts himself fairly often (Valentino is "only" attracted to men, and yet on the next page he becomes sexually attracted to a woman; he supposedly had no physical desire for Rambova, yet he tries numerous times to bed her, and so on). It's not a great book, and the picture it paints of the silent screen legend is anything but flattering. And there are far too few photos. Yet because of the voluminous information it contains, I would say it's an essential stop along the road to learning all there is to know about the star of silent classics like "The Sheik," "The Four Horsemen of The Apocalypse" and "A Sainted Devil."
valentino's latin sexualty.......2004-10-06
although all of the undocumented homosexual affairs of valentino mentioned in this book may not be exactly true, his homosocialty rings true in my experience of the latin male sexuality where appearances are everything and anything goes privately. some of the mentioned associations may have been mere friendships between two friends who shared either homo or bisexualty. that valentino was sexually attracted to andre devan is convincing particularly in light of his travel diary published in the 1920s[ a copy of which i own]. it subtley reveals more than either valentino or the publishers may have known.
this book gave me an insight into the sexuality of valentino .
Complete Nonsense!.......2003-06-25
This is the second most discredited bio of Valentino, in my opinion, trailing just behind Kenneth Anger's funny but spurious "Hollywood Babylon." The author claims to be in the possession of Rudy's private diary and quotes from it episodes of passionate homosexual love. Long ago that "diary" was proven to be a fake, written by a distempered mind. The French-Canadian author, Jeanne de Recqville, carefully explored every sentence of that so-called diary, and demonstrated its numerous mistakes. Let the buyer beware! You'll learn more about the author of this horrible book than you ever will about Rudolph Valentino. It is nonsense like this which cheapens the art of Hollywood biography and discredits the veracity of those who think they are contributing to cinema history.
Say it isn't so, Rudy!.......2003-03-18
...No stars for this book! It is well written but what is said is disgusting. Was he or wasn't he? David Bret has the answer from previously "unpublished material". Bret paints Rudolph Valentino as a homosexual, exhibitionist slob. I own six books about Valentino and none of them allude to these "new characters" that were supposed to be Rudy's lovers. If you like Rudolph Valentino, do not read this book.

Book Description
Examining visual, musical and literary works from the late Tudor period to the First World War, Mary Queen of Scots traces a nation's long romance with the queen it once rejected.
Considering both mainstream works (from Edmund Spenser to Sir Walter Scott) and the attachments to Mary that have been formed and sustained by certain subaltern groups, particularly women, Jayne Lewis separates Mary's life from the myth that formed about her and shows how her prevailing image as a sexualized mother has made her a complicated object of political and personal desire. Lewis demonstrates how this desire emerged at a formative moment in the history of modern Britain, and, over time, subliminally shaped that very history.
Customer Reviews:
An Impressive effort, but falls short of its goal.......2001-06-05
In this book, Lewis sets out to trace the portrayal of Mary Queen of Scots as a romantic figure throughout time. The topic is fascinating, and one I've done minimal research on myself. However, I was disappointed with Lewis's final result. It seems that she bit off more than she could chew with the book, squashing too much information into too little space. For the curious reader, who has not studied Mary Stuart heavily, this book will seem cumbersome and overwhelming; it requires at least a basic knowledge of Mary's life and the events surrounding it. For those who study Mary, either professionally or as a hobby (like myself), will mostly likely get excited when they see the proposed topic of this book, but will not walk away satisfied with what Lewis has stated. What is she trying to prove? What does all of this information mean? These questions aren't answered, and for myself that was very frustrating.
Good premise, disappointing result.......2000-09-03
This is a very painful book to read. The concept is excellent, but the author's writing style goes beyond academic. It is pompous, arrogant and, ultimately, laughable. Often I have read a sentence in her book only to think: "Yes, I read it, but WHAT did she SAY?" Although I am not a scholar on Mary Queen of Scots, I have read quite a bit about her. In this book, there is a tone that somehow just doesn't ring true. Although I would not recommend this book to anyone, readers who are very serious about Mary Queen of Scots might want to read it merely because it exists.
Academic history at its worst.......2000-07-16
While the idea of writing an overview of how Mary Queen of Scots has been portrayed over the centuries is a good one, Jayne Lewis is simply not up to the task. For one thing, she seems to have only a superficial knowledge about Mary herself, which lends a shallowness to Lewis' interpretations. For another, her style is extremely dry and overly analytical. At times, she sounds so laughably like the stereotype of the "Ivory tower" pompous professor, that the book begins to read like parody.
Worst of all are a number of unforgivably egregious historical errors she makes, which, again, just shows her unfamiliarity with her subject. For instance, she includes several unflattering quotes about Mary that Lewis attributes to Sir James Melville's "Memoirs." These quotes actually come from "Master Randolph's Fantasy," a libellous ballad about Mary that was circulated by her Protestant enemies in 1565. In discussing Hugh Campbell's 1825 book, which prints several letters (not to be confused with the famous "Casket Letters,") supposedly written by Mary to Bothwell, Lewis says Campbell himself forged those letters. Since Campbell was merely reprinting letters from a pamphlet that was published in 1725 (one of the letters was originally printed in the 16th century memoirs of Brantome,) Campbell obviously was not the one who wrote them. Such obvious mistakes make it hard to take anything Lewis says very seriously. (Speaking of the "Casket Letters," Lewis gives the impression that these, too, have been proved to be forgeries--which is very far from the truth.)
In short, the idea of the book was a good one, but it was wasted in the hands of a bad writer.
