The authors are professional writers and one can tell. They write with great prose, humor and wit. They provide top ten lists of sights in each area they cover. They seem to like wine, Catholic sites, and animals/nature in particular. If one is pick a travel book of PA, this would be a good place to start, and if nothing else, it makes a good read.

Great Scholarship, but Light on the Poetry.......2007-09-17

I agree with the other reviewers that the scholarship that went into creating this exceptional biography of Rumi and his historical era was exceptional. The level of detail present in this book would be hard to come by in a biography of a more recent historical figure.

My one issue with this book is the general lack of Rumi's poems. I would estimate that there were about 30 or so full poems translated in this book. Clearly, the writer's focus was on Rumi's life, but why title it "...The Life, Teachings and Poetry..." if only to include a brief sampling of the poet's works. Rumi was a mystical poet who translated his life and religious understanding into his work. Without a greater breadth of his work, it is hard to understand who he is. I was although more disappointed by this because the translations in the book were excellent. He wisely decided to translate the content into a lyrical form suitable to English rather than trying to imitate the original Persian poetic forms that Rumi used.

I feel like this book could have been more complete with more poems. Don't buy this book expecting to read much of his work. Buy this book if you want exceptional scholarship on Rumi, his teachers, and his times.

Superlative job!.......2006-01-25

If I could give this book TEN STARS, I would. Prof. Franklin Lewis has done a superlative job in bringing out different facets of Mawlana Jalal al-Din Rumi and his father Baha al-Din, his mentor Borhan al-Din, his charismatic awakener Shams al-Din, along the way clearing up various myths and baseless rumors about these men. Not only does Prof. Lewis paint a full picture of the context for Rumi's development, he gives us a long, in-depth analysis of various phases of Mawlana's life, then provides a shorter "recap" synopsis of his career; presents us with exciting, authentic translations of 50 Rumi poems; gives us a candid assessment of various translators old and new of Rumi's works; outlines the interesting history of the manuscripts of his works; traces the history of the Mevlevi Order; and much more (among other things, I was grateful for his mention of the excellent but relatively unknown Rumi translator Ibrahim Gamard, whose website on Rumi is a goldmine of excellent scholarly translations of many sections of the Masnavi, the Divan, etc. And while your at it, also see Iranian-American poet Zara Houshmand's excellent rhyming translations of Rumi's quatrains at www.iranian.com)

Anyone at all interested in Mawlana in more than a passing fashion simply MUST have Prof. Lewis' Rumi book on their shelves. What a treasure trove!

Now, here's hoping that Prof. Lewis will turn his considerable talents to expand his doctoral dissertation on Hakim Sana'i (d.1131) into a lengthy book on that great Persian Sufi poet-sage (who was such an inspiration to Rumi). And, maybe further down the road, he'll bring us books on Farid al-Din Attar and the later Persian poet Hafiz?? Here's hoping...

Just this one fine book on Rumi is a lifetime achievement.

Rumi: the man behind the mystic poet........2001-11-03

"Light a fire of love within your soul," Rumi tells us, "burn up these thoughts and words from head to toe" (p. 400). In his impressive, 686-page scholarly study of Jalal al-Din Rumi, Persian scholar Franklin Lewis illuminates the man behind the thirteenth century mystic poet and preacher. Through his meticulous research, Lewis, a professor at Emory University in Atlanta, offers us "a glimpse" into Rumi's life, as well as new insights into Rumi's teachings, widely-popular poetry, and modern influence.

"Three short phrases tell the story of my life," Rumi said, "I was raw, I got cooked, I burned" (p. 404). Many of the biographical details of Rumi's life remain unknown. ""Most of what we know about Rumi," Lewis writes, "comes to us clouded by a heavy mist of myth and legend" (p. 272). We follow Rumi from his birth to an Islamic preacher in September, 1207 (p. 272) to his death on December 17, 1273 (p. 276). Along the way, Lewis reveals that his subject married at a young age, about seventeen (p. 320), fathered two children, pursued legal and religious studies in Aleppo and Damascus (p. 273), became a lawyer or professor of law (pp. 123, 274), married again (after his first wife died) and fathered at least two more children (p. 320) before his death. Lewis also examines Rumi's relationship with Shams al-Din Tabrizi, the encounter that transformed Rumi's spirituality; "he became more ecstatic in his worship, expressing his love for God not only in a careful attitude of self-renunciation and control, but also through the joy of poetry, music and meditative dance" (p. 274). Rumi and Shams became "Sufi Bohemians," tasting life for themselves. Their path involved "disciplining and training one's soul, watching over one's heart and concentrating the mind on God" (p. 34). Rumi tells us that "the law of religion is like a candle that shows us the way; without that candle we cannot even set foot on the spiritual path. Once the way is lit with the light of the law, the wayfarer begins his spiritual quest" (p. 37). When Shams disappeared mysteriously, we witness Rumi's "frenetic quest to recover the vision of this spiritual guide turned inward" to the point where Rumi discovers Shams "within himself" (p. 275). Inspired by this remarkable relationship, Rumi composed more than 60,000 lines of verse (p. 314). Lewis includes a sampling of fifty Rumi poems in his book.

Lewis tells us that his book should be considered a starting point, at best, for understanding Rumi. Although it should not be considered "the final and definitive biography of Rumi," Lewis writes, it is "intended, then, as a kind of Rumi bible, a manual for anyone interested in the life, poetry, teachings and influence of Jalal al-Din Rumi, who has been called the greatest poet of mankind. The whirling dervishes plant one foot on the floor with their toes fixed around a wooden peg and turn in Rumi's memory. In like manner, I hope this book will help ground all lovers of Rumi as they circle, moth-like, around the flame of his works" (pp. 8-9).

Not that it matters, however important for researchers.......2001-09-09

At the time of Rumi/Molana/Molavi/Jalaledin Mohammad Balkhi and many tens of centuries before it and centuries after, there was no country called Afghanistan (how could he be an Afghani when Afghanistan didn't exist). I fully understand this is besides the message he conveys in his books, however from a scholarly point of view it would be appropriate to identify his country appropriately. Dari and Persian are the same language (two names for the same language), my friend Dari is short for Darbari, the language of Iran (Persia).

Psychology, Hermeneutics and Rumi.......2000-09-19

Rumi's works are valuable as social science in their reference to psychological development (the journey of soul). In order to understand Rumi, one must take a classical hermeneutical stance to uncover his intended meanings. This can only be done well if one understands Rumi himself. Franklin Lewis' text is now the greatest aid in so doing: there is no other extant text that gives such a thorough and accurate portrait of Rumi. It offers in-depth description and analysis of his antecedents, as well as the 13th century contemporary influences on his own psychological development. Other than Rumi's works themselves, no other book has been written that allows such insight into who he really was. Professor Lewis has written a work that is an invaluable aid in hermeneutically understanding Rumi, and in providing a richness of context through which one can better decode Rumi's own meaning-making.

I would never do the things in this book to my horse. No way, not ever! (Not even to my hubbys grouchy mare) I would not tie a horses mouth around so it gives to the bit! I would not saddle her up, for the first time, and just get on with no preperations and canter her on her first ride. This book is not for helping your youngster learn, it is forceful.

Finally a book for all levels. This book is written in a step-by-step style that everyone can appreciate. It explains not only what to do, but exactly how to do it. This book covers everything you will need to train your colt, from the time it's born until the real work begins. You begin to truly think like a horse! Excellent book.

Tips when you don't know which way to solve a problem.......2001-11-10

Laurie is one of the most common-sense authors I've come across. Her down to earth style and easy to understand methods helped me to quickly solve problems with my filly. My filly as a three year old is better mannered than most seniors. I attribute it much of her attitude to the techniques I gained from this book.

Gotta Have It!.......2001-02-23

I've been thru several books on training a young horse, and this was by far the best. The other books seemed to be too complex, working more on the advanced training of dressage, etc-glossing over the basics of training. This book didn't, it covered everything step-by-step, telling you what to look for and explaining each step so you could see it in your mind. Also, there are photographs that help you visualize what you are looking for. I read the whole book in one sitting, and even though my horse is 3 years old, I realized that there were things I had missed in his training that will help me now and in the future. I have been racking my brains trying to find something to explain how to teach him to 'steer', and every book I read pretty much skipped this step. I've been around horses all my life, but they were already trained to the point of being 'bomb-proof', nothing fazed them. I'm training this one from a yearling, and didn't have any idea where to start. My thanks to the author for writing this book-it is definately worth every penny!

Great for beginners.......2000-09-16

I just started training my first colt this past summer and found this book very easy to follow. I was able to take the lessons step by step and had my colt going nicely on the trail in a little over two months. I recommend it to anyone who trains, but especially the person just starting out with their own colt.

A little bit of everything.......2005-01-12

This book is about three inches thick and offers information on almost everything you could possibly ever bring into your house (plant-wise that is). It has in-depth chapters about orchids, cacti, vining plants, and other sub-groups that you'll see in stores; plant problems, propagation methods, general care, and MUCH more. It's the book I flip to first when I need an answer. NOT a beginner's type book, but full of info for those who want to dig deeper into their hobby. LOTS of reading here, so it's not for the faint of heart, but it has lots of pictures and drawings to help out too. Highly recommended.

When you open a book and are immediately presented with a map of the Middle East showing Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the West Bank, but no word "Israel," you know something is wrong. When you then read on the first page of the book that Israel's eastern border is the "Palestinian territory," you know that you are not dealing with a fair-minded author. The first page also says that it was "tensions between the two groups" -- Israelis and Palestinians -- that led to "a series of wars and uprisings" after 1948, with no mention of the Arab countries' invasion of Israel in 1948 or subsequent hostile acts. To read just the first page would have you believe that Israel has been continually accumulating additional Arab land since 1948, for no rhyme or reason. The rest of the book follows the same pattern; there's always a reason for Arab discontent, but never a good reason for Israeli responses. Not recommended.

A book I highly recommend..........2007-03-16

This book was a real page turner for me. To read the openness that Anne Heche used in the telling of this book. She put herself out there to be judged (as you can see by these reviews), but yet she still chose to tell her story. She uses the writing as a way to excorcise her demons and to let people know how she got to where she is. Coming from religious upbringing and abuse is like pulling you in two different directions. I believe she adapted the second personality to deal with the abuse and denial that she was facing at home. It's a well documented fact that people are all the time creating different people in their minds to help them make it out alive. I give her kudos for making it out in one piece. She has had to make peace with her past and I believe this book helped her. I very highly recommend it. It is very insightful into how Christianity can be taken and manipulated to suit the individual whims of many.

They say there is a thin line between insanity and genius. That line, I say, is brilliance. The words leap off the page in a dance of brilliance as Heche courageously seeks, finds, and shares the truth of her existence. It's an interesting read, a well written albeit agonizing journey that had me turning the pages fast, to see what happens next, and then slowly, to savor the crafting of each sentence. The book is controversial in that it throws light into the darkest corners of our lives, and our culture. It is painful in that it is so true. It is exhilirating in the way one human being finds her way through the darkness, facing her demons, to conquer any residual shame and humiliation. The shame is not hers. It belongs to people who can hear a child cry in the night, laugh, and look the other way. Heche's mother is concerned with what everybody else thinks, and how she, as a mother, appears in the face of Anne's herstory. It's no wonder Anne has had to work so hard to take care of herself.

Took Guts to Write this Odd Memoir .......2006-04-06

Strangely unsatisfying tell-all. I distinctly felt that the book was more the writer's attempt to heal than a piece of literary work.

Heche shares much of her oddball therapy work, self-spun theories of her case, and dredged-up memories of abuse in her utterly messed-up childhood, but strangely enough reveals little of her SELF. I felt I was pushed into the psychiatrist's own chair, not allowed to be merely a reader or (in the best case of autobiography) a kind of temporary confidante and friend.

I gotta hand it to her, it took some guts to own up to some of this (psychotic episode under influence of Ecstasy, for one), and I am sorry for her suffering as a child. But perhaps SHE should have paid ME to read her unsavory chunk of insanity.

Finally!.......2006-01-18

An in-depth look into Ms. Heche's life. I've been begging for this book for years. Ask my mum. Anne's honesty is refreshing and her choices are brave and simulataneously courageous. I hope that everyone who has spoken to God like Anne and I have, gets a chance to read this book before Ms. Heche's star dims in Hollywood. Not likely! Thank you Anne for not being afraid to be courageous and simultaneously brave. Not all of us have that talent, but you didn't let that stop you, did you?

If you're looking for well formed writing, no this book is not for you. If you're looking for Anne Heche to present herself as some amazing woman without problems, then stay away BUT if you want a very entertaining read about one of Hollywood's least celebrated, interesting people then BUY it!

I absolutely adore this book. Some say it is far fetched and couldn't be true but I love that Anne Heche really opened herself up to this project of writing a memoir. There is nothing worse than reading a "guarded" autobiography and this is as far from that as you can get.

From incest, to LSD therapy to being one of the first openly gay ladies of Hollywood...and then changing her mind this book never has a dull moment.

I could not stop listening to this CD!!! I could not believe how much Anne has been through and I applaud her honesty and bravery...she left no stone unturned and it takes alot of courage to tell a personal story like this. Especially about being molested. I hope that her speaking out about this will help others some forward who have been abused.

A great read..........2005-06-04

This is quite literally one of the best books I have read in years. I believe that ALL of us have at least some level of "issues" we need to deal with from our past. While mine are not as severe as Anne's this was one eye opening experience reading her book. I usually pass most of my books on to charity for someone else to enjoy but this one will stay on my bookshelf for the rest of my life. I know that I will re-read it many times throughout the rest of my life. If you want to laugh and cry and in the process learn something about yourself GET THIS BOOK.

Courage under fire...........2004-03-24

I have just finished my second listening to Anne Heche's powerful memoir of her short but troubled life. At times I winced, at times I gasped, at times I even laughed. This is a riveting story, all the more so hearing it in her own voice. - - - Some of the negative reviews preceding attack Heche for revealing the reality of her childhood. Is this the 'bell curve' of life, e.g. one persons pleasure is another person's poison. Or does her honesty strike a chord in the lives of those who listened long enough to eventually recoil in pain. Their own pain which they do not want to be reminded of?

She is not crazy........2004-03-03

It takes courage to open up like she has about her experiences. Having grown up in a very stable, normal household, I found it moving that this young lady has not allowed bitterness to overwhelm her life and bring her down. She has evidently provoked some extreme negative reactions in some of the other reviewers. I don't agree with them. If you have any interest in this talented actress, or in the experiences of "dysfunctional" families, Anne Heche's book is worth looking into. Also, In my opinion, she performs it very well in the book on tape.

ok i can understand the mental anguish from having such a painful childhood and being molested by your own father....
But hey I was molested by my grandfather from birth to age 14 and I never saw any stinking spaceship!Yes I can joke about it now, and still no spaceship. Should I feel cheated? LOL

What an awesome book about how God wants to speak to us and through us. All we have to do is listen.

God operates outside the realm of reason. When it comes to dealing with the impossible, you must simply act on God's word and voice. God wants us to live our life through the Spirit and to be led by his Spirit, not our mind, emotions or fear of man.

I recommend this book to all those that want to hear God's voice. Sometimes it will sould crazy what he speaks to you, but listen and obey. The Bible is our guide.

This book is a personal record of her crazy episodes, her recovery, and her work as editor of the Canadian journal Phoenix Rising: The Voice of the Psychiatrized and as coordinator of the Ontario-based Psychiatric Survivors Alliance whose insistence on drug-free treatment and peer counseling has changed North American attitudes toward mental illness. Call Me Crazy also includes lengthy interviews with other leaders of this movement. Shimrat's critical analysis of society's condemnation of other-minded people and her suggestions for recreating systems of health, support, and community are inspired.

One of the hardest things about being given a DSM diagnosis is the act of breaking free from the stigma of such a label. Unfortunately, most psychiatric professionals are more concerned about creating a growth industry than in helping their patients to heal from their psychic wounds.

Shimrat allows those who have been denied a voice the room to express what really works for them regarding personal recovery. The key component would have to be empowerment, as the psychiatric industry tends to demoralize and disempower those whom they claim to help. Considering the fact that, at one time, gayness was considered a DSM catagory of mental illness, it stands to reason that such diagnoses are quite arbitrary and political in nature.

Empowerment is a political movement to liberate those who have been called crazy by their caregivers who lack the insight to see mental health consumers as human beings worthy of dignity. That is the focus of this book, and for that reason I highly recommend it.
