3 out of 5 stars Thoughtful overview but not sufficiently detailed.......2006-09-01

Too brief for those needing more depth, but a briskly written and well-organized primer that combines thoughtful overviews of pre-Christian and Catholic backgrounds to Irish sites and shrines. The directions, details about specific places, and the general travel info at the back of this slim book (about 130 pp. of text proper excluding such addenda) are too generalized to truly direct a traveler to locales on notoriously difficult to navigate rural Irish roads.

The book, for all its brevity, seems to be padded by this often superficial supplemental info. I would have preferred more in-depth coverage of the sites and how-to get there, etc. in the text proper. The book does skim a lot and then repeats such skimming in the listings of sites at the back of the book--often such information's a bit too generalized compared to what a tour book-guide would list. Therefore, although the Rabeys' book's less dated than tourist guides, it is also less practical. It's good to spark curiousity more than show how such reveries about where to go and what to do can be fulfilled in detail. Still, it's more than a history of such places, if less than a complete guide such as one (a newer effort) I recommend below to accompany the Rabey's introductory survey.

I would supplement this not only with, as the authors advise, a navigator with a Michelin map open at all times, but a more detailed AA Road Atlas or perhaps even topographic Ordnance Survey maps of smaller areas. The maps and directions in this book are often too general. The trouble is this book gives the same island map with nearly no helps; as the book goes along they reprint the map with stars for inviting locales but more helpful by far would have been insets, directions to the less easily found sites, and details about hours, fees, and websites.

So, this is best for armchair travelers planning a journey. I'd use this to whet appetites and take notes while planning itineraries. Two of these are appended that show that the authors know what they speak of, as tour guides themselves. These hit the high points for a week or two-week stay. But, the time estimates need to be taken with some caution, as the roads can be wearying if you must drive them and not a coach driver of your cushioned bus. Also, anybody on their own wandering about looking for some of these remoter sites will spend much more time than anticipated by such tour planners--either getting lost, distracted by other tempting vistas, discouraged by weather changes, and/or needing to stop for refreshment at a pub or two, inevitably...

Save room for a detailed guide by (and here's one suggested in their recommended readings) Peter Harbison to sites and state monuments throughout Ireland, or the excellent, much more recent and spiritually relevant Traveller's Guide to Sacred Ireland by Cary Meehan. A bitter antidote to the tour-group mindthink is James Charles Roy's waspish but accurately observed memoir of being a tour guide to his fellow Yanks in a rapidly changing Ireland, "The Back of Beyond." The Rabeys do a service, and not only for rank beginners; their affection for many Irish rugged treasures comes through sensitively, as they summarize useful information, leavened with their own reflections, well-chosen quotes (save a couple from kitschy or hackneyed sources), and a knowledge of how much to tell beginning pilgrims and tourists to such points of interest, without boring or confusing newcomers to Irish culture.

5 out of 5 stars The Only Resource of Its Kind Available.......2002-03-11

I searched in vain for a long time trying to find a book like this one. Simply put, it is, without a doubt, the best travel guide that I have ever purchased. The authors of the book are regular visitors to Ireland and even lead "Celtic Journeys" tours through the country. Because of this, they have a unique "insiders" perspective on the people and on the history of the Emerald Isle, in addition to a healthy respect for the land itself, and for its ancient traditions. Whether you are seeking out pre-Christian archeological sites (stone circles, burial mounds, ancient fortresses), or early Christian places of pilgrimmage (abbeys, monestaries, churches, grave architechture), this book will accommodate your travel needs. The book also contains many general maps, and plenty of basic travel information. As a side note, I appreciated the sensitive way the book was written: with a healthy dose of respect for the places and the people that you will encounter on your travels.

4 out of 5 stars Just What I Need Now.......2001-07-30

In preparing for an upcoming spiritual journey to Ireland, I've located a number of guidebooks and pilgrimage guides, but the Rabey's book is my favorite so far, focusing on the places in Ireland with special spiritual significance. Celtic Journeys tells the stories that ordinary travel books omit, but is not as overwhelming as others of its type. It's well organized, covers the all sites on my itinerary as well as some others. It's well- researched, well-written (except for some proofreading errors), and particularly well-organized. Personally I would like to see a more extensive bibliography, including the sources for the quotes used in the text. I realize that color photos would increase the cost of the book, but this book would benefit from color in place of black and white photos, not necessarily more photos, but larger and easier to see.

I would recommend this book to anyone thinking of visiting Ireland who wants to be prepared to visit the places of both Christian and pre-Christian spiritual significance. Although I want to keep my luggage light, I don't think I can leave home without this one.

      Product Description

There is perhaps no greater symbol of both political oppression and the human spirit in the 20th century than the Berlin Wall. Built during the height of the Cold War in 1961, the Wall was meant to both stop the number of citizens trying to leave East Germany for the freedoms and opportunities of the West and to prevent people spreading the ideals of democracy from coming in. In the 28 years the Wall stood, it is estimated over 1,000 people were killed trying to escape into West Berlin. In the end, the Wall fell without a shot being fired. As Mikhail Gorbachev was laying the foundations for the peaceful dismantling of the Soviet Union, the people of East Berlin and East Germany began demanding their city and country be freed from Soviet occupation. Finally, in November 1989, the Wall was torn down and Germany was once again reunited. This is the story of the dark rise and the eventual uplifting triumph over the Wall that split not only a city and nation, but friends and families.

        Book Description

The citizens of New Orleans braced for the hit of Hurricane Katrina and then blew a big sigh of relief once the hurricane came and seemed to go. But within hours of the category 4 storm ripping through the Gulf Coast states, people's worst fears were realized. The city's decades-old levees were not high or strong enough to hold back the storm surge caused by Katrina, and several levees burst. Water poured into the city, flooding buildings, homes, and streets. As the water rose, people panicked. Many were swept up in the floods and drowned. Others climbed to their roofs and pleaded for helicopter rescuers to come save them. The federal government and relief organizations mobilized for help, but many complained that relief did not come quickly enough. Survivors began running out of food and water. Some began blaming racial discrimination—as many of the hurricane victims were African American— for the government's slow response. But were those accusations fair? Or was there anything else that could have been done in the face of Mother Nature's wrath? In this book, author John Torres takes a very personal look at the devastation of New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

One of the most famous trials in U.S. history took place in a tiny town in Tennessee in 1925. Dayton was the site of what became known as the Scopes Monkey Trial. The defendant, John T. Scopes, was accused of violating a recently passed state law. This law made it illegal to teach the theory of evolution. Under most circumstances, few people would have paid any attention. Several of Dayton s leading citizens saw a chance to put their town on the map. They were successful. Two of the country s most famous people William Jennings Bryan and Clarence Darrow soon became involved. Dozens of reporters poured into Dayton from all over the country. It was the first trial to receive live media coverage. Scopes was found guilty. He had to pay a small fine. But the issues about evolution that the trial raised are still debated today.

Under the cover of darkness, a team of burglars broke into the Democratic National Committee's headquarters at the Watergate Hotel. By a fluke, they were discovered by an observant security guard and arrested. At first glance it appeared nothing more than a random break-in. But when two Washington Post reporters began digging deeper into the background of the burglars, the trail led higher and higher and eventually straight to the White House—and into the Oval Office. As the Watergate scandal unraveled, it turned into one of the United States' greatest Constitutional crises, pitting the judicial system against a paranoid President who believed he was above the law. When secret tapes of conversations between President Richard Nixon and his top aides were discovered, it proved that the White House was running a shadow government, leaving Nixon no choice but to resign or face certain impeachment. The Watergate scandal is a story of the dangers of unchecked power and the importance of a free press to be the public's eyes and ears.

When the Great War began in August 1914, many people thought it would be over by Christmas. Instead it lasted for more than four years and claimed millions of lives. One dominant feature of the conflict was the seemingly endless miles of trenches that faced each other, often just a few hundred yards apart. The only way of attacking was through brutal frontal assaults. Often thousands of men died in a few hours. When they weren t fighting, men lived in subhuman conditions in the trenches. Many people hoped that the horrors of the Great War would make it the war to end all wars. It wasn t. The victorious Allies imposed very harsh terms on the defeated Germans. These terms led directly to the rise of Adolf Hitler and the outbreak of World War II just twenty years later.

The disaster in the Indian Ocean started with a massive undersea earthquake off the coast of Indonesia. What followed was a surge of water called a tsunami that killed thousands of people in nearly a dozen countries. Water rose up miles inland and destroyed everything in its path. Children were ripped from their parentsÂ’ arms, husbands and wives were lost to each other forever. This is their story. But more importantly, this is a story of hope, of how people woke up to destroyed cities and missing children and did not give up. They showed what they were made of by licking their wounds and then trying to find their lives again. This is also the story of how the world responded with the biggest humanitarian effort in history. Countries from all over the world sent money, food, water, soldiers, and doctors. Nothing like this has ever happened in our world before, and although the world responded in a big way, hopefully it will never happen again.

                  Book Description

The Great Depression was one of the great crises of the twentieth century. For some time, the very survival of the country appeared to be at stake. Businesses failed, banks closed, people lost their homes, and thousands lined up at soup kitchens across the country. The future appeared bleak indeed. Franklin Delano Roosevelt promised the people of the United States "a new deal," and in 1932 he was elected president. Many of his New Deal policies shaped the country in ways that are still visible today, like Social Security and the 40-hour work week. The government struggled to help the people and to keep the economy stable. The Great Depression could not be legislated out of existence, however. Only a world war was able to vanquish it.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to fly? Have you dreamt of having wings and taking off to soar, glide, and dip with the birds? You are not the only one. Many people have wanted to leave the ground behind and join the clouds and the stars. Two such people were brothers named Orville and Wilbur Wright. These men were always looking for an idea to explore. Thinking as one, they would put their heads together and figure out how to create something new. They invented a printing press out of scrap. They designed bicycles when they were still a new fad. Finally, they turned their minds towards flight. Through lots of determination and endless experimentation, Orville and Wilbur created The Flyer. For a few glorious seconds, they left gravity behind and took to the skies at Kitty Hawk. It was a moment that changed their lives and the course of the world.

Early in January 2005, high officials of many world governments gathered in the Polish town of Auschwitz. They were there to remember the sixtieth anniversary of its liberation from Nazi tyranny. The concentration camp at Auschwitz is the primary symbol of one of the worst crimes ever committed against human beings: the Holocaust. Under the orders of German dictator Adolf Hitler, the Holocaust was the organized killing of an estimated six million Jews. The horror extended to millions of other people. They had the misfortune of being different from "normal" Germans. The Holocaust was a Monumental Milestone in that it made people recognize the importance of human rights and realize how easily fellow humans can violate those rights. It stands as a warning for all future generations.

This is a good intro, without much information on actual grants for specific purposes. If you are an educator, non-profit, or individual interested in grants related to technology, for innovation, curriculum, development, emerging technologies, I recommend Technology Grant News: Everything Technology: Awards-Contests-Grants-Scholarships. This is a good starter book, but it does not provide quality resources for you to practice the skills gained. You should build your skills with quality templates, references, wording techniques. I would caution readers to move on to a good intermediate work like Government Funding and You. This book will provide you with the skills to put together a quality grant with the potential LAND that grant. This book is an excellent start, but Government Funding and You is a crucial next step.

5 out of 5 stars Awarded $250,000 Federal grant because of this book!.......2006-08-26

I was working at a NON-PROFIT organization and the departing Executive Director refused to submit a renewed grant request to a Federal agency. I was tasked to do it instead within one week. I had no support of the staff or Board of Directors because they did not have a clue of the process. I had never written a grant. So, I purchased this book and read it over the weekend. It was easy to read and made sense. I simply followed the book...identified a problem/an unmet need and a way to solve it. Thank you! The agency was awarded $250,000 to fund two of the full-time employees over a 2 year period.

Each one of the "Dummies" books has been so helpful, not only for me but for my daughter who is in high school. Everything from religion to business. "Grant Writing for Dummies" is in keeping with the others: very informative, gets to the point for the layperson, and is done in a very easy-to-use format. So far, I haven't come across one book in this series that isn't helpful!

                        Book Description

Home decorating will never be the same. Close your curtains! Throw away your summery linens! Forget about those white eyelet pillow covers! And for Goth's sake, buy some black lights! Voltaire is here to help you with your home decorating dilemmas, guide you through the hardware stores and decorating centers (which are so difficult for Goths to navigate), and lay it all out on the line about which shade of black goes with which shade of black. Who knows?! One day soon he might have his own decorating line at a discount store. In this world of pastels and plaids, it's so hard for Goths to find anything aesthetically appealing. You go in search of Edward Gorey and wind up with an eyeful of Eddie Bauer. With Voltaire's Paint It Black you can turn the unbearably mundane into the delightfully macabre with little more than a touch of creativity and a can of black spray paint.

A friend of mine let me borrow this book. I am amazed that I gave it back without crying like a baby. From spooky dolls to bottle candle holders to a Gothic wedding, this is the perfect starter guide for the do it yourself goth. Or, if nothing else, it is a good laugh and an easy read.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and beautiful book, but ideas are very basic.......2007-09-03

If you're a fan of Voltaire's brand of snarky humor, you'll enjoy this book on gothic homemaking. The design of the book is worth the price on its own; the black-white-and-red color scheme and black pages are sleek and lovely. My only "complaint" (and it's not really a complaint so much as an observation) is that quite a few of the ideas are very basic and straightforward, and could be found online for free. (Examples: hanging cloth on your walls instead of painting; turning boring dolls into demon dolls.) But, there are a lot of really cool and inventive ideas with complete and helpful instructions, such as the "goth box" shelves, picture frames, and the graveyard cake (which looks as delicious as it does spooky). Voltaire also gets points for including specific recommendations for where to find some of the materials, such as car decals for "pimping your ride." These details turn what could have been rather bland ideas into truly helpful ones. Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who's just getting started with gothic decorating, wants a few new ideas, or just enjoys Voltaire's signature humor.

Very fun read,Voltaire's second book. Alot of great and creative ideas on how to goth out your home. And as always, very funny observations by Voltaire. Highly reccommend for Voltaire fans and goth fans.

This book would've served me well in my Goth period but alas even Goths must sometimes grow up. Though I've since passed this book on it was a delightful little read and only Voltaire could've pulled it off.

5 out of 5 stars Nice day for a BLACK wedding!!!!.......2006-11-09

I found his chapter on gothic weddings the most amusing, although some of it seemed too far out for me. His book was throughly entertaining to read has a artist and one of the darker-fashion inclined crowd. :) I reccomend this book because it's ideas are practical, inexpensive, and leave lots of room for the gothic imagination!!! BUY THIS BOOK!!!! :)

                                  Book Description

12-year-old Katie is injured in an accident that kills her parents. Unsure that she'll ever walk again, she goes to live with her grandfather on a dairy farm in Kansas. It is a place so different from her city life, she has a hard time adjusting. Then a horse, a totem and Spirit Keeper, appears and gives her life focus. It also motivates her to move out of her passive role on the farm. At the same time, new people enter her life, role models who offer her possibilities she would never have considered in her old existence: becoming a trophy-winning barrel racer, and even becoming a shaman. On top of that, she discovers a 130-year-old family secret. With the help of Toby, her horse, she is able to heal not only herself but her entire family, including generations of Native Americans she didn't know were in her family tree.

This story features a real horse. Although Katie and her story is fiction, Toby, the People's Horse, is real. His owners use Toby's stud fees, and now the profit from this book, to fund a nonprofit organization that gives money to the needy. Toby's agents true angels walking upon the earth spread out and let Toby's spirit guide them to people who have a need not always a need for money but a need to know there are people who care.

Toby is truly a Spirit Keeper: a guide and role model for us all until we can find our own spirit and let it loose.

                                      Book Description

Light and shade playing across the surface of a painting brings magic into any work. Artists will be entranced by the variety of techniques in this handbook, which includes a comprehensive section on color mixing. The author's unique Artstrips, a detailed teaching tool, provide an easy-to-follow guide on specific techniques dealing with the correct manipulation of light and shade. Line and tone shading, the creation of volume, depth, sunlight, and shadow, are all fundamental to producing successful drawings and paintings. These techniques are demonstrated in the simplest of drawings as well as in the delights of layering in oils.

                                                    Book Description

"Please Don't Call Me Tarzan" is the story of the fascinating life of Herman Brix/Bruce Bennett --- from the lumber camps of Washington to the Olympic Games to the Hollywood scene of the 1930s, '40s, '50s and '60s.

The book takes the reader through Herman's exciting life...and to Guatemala, where he struggles not only to become the screen's eighth Tarzan, but to stay alive in primitive conditions.

Herman Brix is considered by many Tarzan fans to be the best film apeman ever, due to the great physical presence and dignity he brought to the role. There are over 90 photos in the book, many of them never seen before by the general public, and behind-the-scenes stories of working with stars like Humphrey Bogart ("Sahara" and "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre").

The book also includes a foreword by Danton Burroughs, the grandson of Tarzan creator Edgar Rice Burroughs.

This book "enthusiastialy endorses Brix as the ultimate Tarzan, but also details his subsequent -- and important -- film career as well," says Jack Bender, nationally-known artist who draws the syndicated Alley Oop comic strip. "This makes a really good read, and is supplemented by many rarely-seen photos. The beautiful dust jacket is bound to become a collector's item."

2 out of 5 stars Not much substance for a biography.......2007-06-03

I just finished reading 'Please Don't Call Me Tarzan', and I was overall very disappointed with the book. The writing is extremely substandard - written as if a high school student was writing a book report for his teacher, and there is very little meat in the material. Though there is generally some good detail in the amount of work (films et al) that Herman Brix / Bruce Bennett had a part in (whether starring or supportive), the book is written like a People Magazine article that offers some basic facts but never goes into any depth. In fact, this very thin book (114 pages of actual biography including a dozen pages of b/w photographs) could have been condensed further and submitted as a magazine article due to the numerous repetitions of Brix / Bennett's film and family background details as well as the author's worshipping opinions. Mr. Chapman is obviously infatuated with Brix / Bennett, and his passion is somewhat contagious. However, I was bored throughout the read; I was seriously wanting more details of the making of the Tarzan epic as well as his other films (especially Mildred Pierce, Dark Passage, and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre). The entire book was very rose-tinted in its description of Brix / Bennett's life. In theory, there are people out there who have no regrets and always see the bright side of things, but in reality, come on, that's most likely not the real case here.

                                                    3 out of 5 stars Lacks depth.......2005-09-13

Book contains very little description of Bennett's quality films or analysis of them - concentrating only on the Tarzan films and serials. Much of the bio is written like a fanclub puffery piece - painting Bennett as a superhero. Numerous photos sections, from private holdings, are excellent and worth the price of the book - if not the main reason to do so.

5 out of 5 stars Please Don't Call me Tarzan by Mike Chapman.......2002-01-05

This publication is a comprehensive life story of Herman Brix/Bruce Bennett. This book contains professional and personal photos reflecting the athlete and actor through his life and career that spanned 90 years from a seven year old boy to 2001. Well presented and very interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Getting to know Herman Brix aka Bruce Bennett.......2001-09-13

Michael Chapman has done a magnificent job of compiling the pictorial biography of BRUCE BENNETT, a highly accomplished actor and athlete, whose life spans nearly a century. We can all learn from such a man, and I salute Mr. Chapman for giving us this chance to explore the life and times of a hitherto unrecognized American superstar.

5 out of 5 stars Please Don't Call Me Tarzan is a terrific read........2001-09-06

Mike Chapman is a disciple of the work ethic, strong character and Tarzan. In Herman Brix/Bruce Bennett, he found a person associated with all three elements, and the book Mike produced, Please Don't Call Me Tarzan, reflects that. Mike enthusiatically endorses Brix as the ultimate Tarzan, but also details his subsequent--and important--film career as well. This makes a really good read, and is supplemented by many rarely-seen photos. The beautiful dust jacket is bound to become a collectors item as well. Great job, Mike! -- Jack Bender
