    Book Description

Every summer in the American Southwest and northern Mexico the region's mountain grasslands and mountain ranges are carpeted by an astounding variety of colorful wildflowers. Indeed, the blooming of upland wildflowers constitutes a "second season" for Southwest residents and visitors, alike.

In Wildflowers of the Southwest Mountains, botanist and educator Meg Quinn identifies and describes the most common and showy wildflowers native to the region's grassland and woodland habitats. Depicts more than eighty species in 86 detailed color photographs organized by color for ease of identification.

                        Book Description

For courses in the history of medicine.

This reader gives students in a history of medicine class, or the general reading public, a broad selection of readings about the many ways that disease and trauma have affected human populations over time. It draws from both primary and secondary sources to give a dual perspective of a) what was written at the time of various events, and b) what modern scholars have been able to ascertain from historical evidence. It has a broad scope both in time and space, covering materials from earliest Man to contemporary bioethical problems, and contains materials from India, China, Latin America, and the Muslim worlds as well as Europe and the United States. Rather than simply looking at great medical discoveries, it is purposely focused on how trauma and disease have been daily companions of human existence.

It fills a serious void in teaching materials in the history of medicine by taking a world perspective, using a combination of primary and secondary sources, covering a huge time span and putting emphasis on the problems created by medical progress, and most importantly, focusing on the effect that medical practices have had on ordinary people throughout history.

                        Customer Reviews:

                        5 out of 5 stars A fascinating read.......2006-06-01

This book is bound to fascinate anyone even remotely interested in medicine or medical history. It brings together a collection of readings from primary sources and expert journals to show how disease affects people and societies, and how real people (not just "great doctors") respond to disease and medicine. I also appreciate the fact that the book has a strong focus on WOMEN and their role in the development of medicine. Definitely not "dry" or "boring."

                                  Book Description

Unnatural Horizons presents a selective history of the last five centuries of landscape architecture at the intersection of poetics and science, rhetoric and technology, and philosophy and politics. It investigates the relations between garden aesthetics and metaphysics, discussing issues similar to those raised by Weiss's critically acclaimed Mirrors of Infinity.
The Western garden has always served as a setting for music, dance, theater, sculpture, and architecture, as well as the minor arts of meditative contemplation and erotic seduction. The history of landscape architecture is therefore inextricable from the histories of the other arts, and must be studied from an interdisciplinary and polycultural point of view.
Some of the topics included in this book are the influence of neo-Platonic philosophy on the Italian Renaissance garden, erotic fantasies and the 18th-century libertine garden, the contrast between Thoreau's romantic notion of virgin nature and changes in perception due to increasing speed and mechanization, and the limits of landscape architecture as art form in 20th-century gardens.?

An American Icon Under Government Surveillance

When Frank Sinatra died in 1998, he was one of the most chronicled celebrities ever, but the most unusual record of his life came to light only posthumously: a 1,275-page dossier recording decades of FBI surveillance stemming from J. Edgar Hoover's belief that Sinatra had mob or Communist ties. This shadow biography, with information never before presented in book form, details:
Hoover's search through Sinatra's past to see if he got a bogus medical deferment from military service, ultimately yielding the simple fact that Sinatra really had suffered a perforated eardrum as a youthThe FBI's previously unreported cooperation with journalists looking for dirt on Sinatra, including one who had recently been punched out by the singerNumerous instances of the star's carousing and intemperate behavior -- including a detailed report alleging that he rampaged through a Las Vegas hotel after he and his wife Mia Farrow lost small fortunes gamblingThe mob's attempts to curry favor with John F. Kennedy through Sinatra -- and its anger when Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy turned up the heat.
This fascinating record of governmental scrutiny will captivate every Sinatra fan, as well as anyone who wants to understand the second half of the American century -- the Cold War, popular culture, the cult of celebrity, Camelot, and the FBI's mania for investigating American citizens -- all personified by the most dominant entertainer of the era.

The rare cover photo and sexy title are the best things about this book. It is a VERY dull read. There is nothing shocking here for any serious fans that would actually buy this book. To Summarize: No, there is no evidence that the mafia influenced Frank getting his breakthrough role in "From Here to Eternity," no, there is no evidence that Frank was a member of the communist party, yes, there is some evidence that Frank had some casual contact with members of organized crime (as has EVERY major Hollywood star), yes, Frank and Kennedy partied together. This book is more of an indictment of Hoover's heavy-handedness as head of the FBI. They just kept digging and digging on Frank, but really found virtually nothing. The biggest things they had on him was that he was arrested when he was 22 for having an affair with a married woman, that he initally told the draft board that he was in perfect health and later pointed out that he had a perforated eardrum (verified as true) and a neurosis about being in crowds (unlikely, but unverified as true or false), and that he fibbed about whether Chicago organized crime figure Sam Giancanna was at a show that Sinatra was also at in Atlantic City. BIG DEAL! The lack of dirt here proves what I always suspected, that Frank Sinatra was merely a vicitm of b.s. tabloids and a paranoid Cold-War government. The "Sinatra Files" reveal that Frank was actually a very stand-up guy and great American citizen.

This book is based on a very interesting premise, Frank Sinatra's FBI files. Unfortunately, it is difficult to convert all the information kept on Sinatra into a readable book. Thus, this book is not one you will sit down with on a Sunday afternoon and read. Its really more of a "browser" book. If you are looking for specific information (Frank's mob connections, relationship with JFK, etc.) then it is an excellent resource. Its by no means a biography.

I feel that the book is for serious Sinatraphiles like myself. If you have just a passing interest in Sinatra, I'd recommend a biography or something along the lines of "The Way You Wear Your Hat" by Bill Zehme. However, if you've devoured book after book on Sinatra and still want more, this will be a valuable addition to your library.

Who else but Frank Sinatra could be accused of being a communist and a mafioso at the same time?

"The Sinatra Files," edited by Tom and Phil Kuntz, is a treasure trove for those of us who are fascinated by the fact the FBI kept Sinatra under surveillance for almost five decades, but who were reluctant to sift through the 1275 pages of raw data available on the net since late 1998.

"The Sinatra Files" neatly collects the FBI data into an extremely readible text beginning in the 40's with an erroneous report that Sinatra paid $40,000 for his 4-F draft status, through the early 80's when he was successful in efforts to get his Nevada Gaming license renewed.

Does "The Sinatra Files" reveal anything new?

                                    Sort of.

Sinatra told the draft board in addition to a punctured eardrum, he also had a fear of crowds and elevators....

In the early 50's when rumors spread through the FBI's halowed halls that Sinatra had Communist affiliations, Frank offered to go undercover to weed out subversives in Hollywood (Frank Sinatra as Herbert Philbrick? Give us a break!)

"The Sinatra Files" is worth reading not only for Sinatraphiles who are fascinated with the famous "dark side" of America's finest popular singer, but with the Cold War hysteria that gripped the nation for three decades.

"Every time I thought I had reached the peak, that the passion for the journey must certainly begin to wane, I would stumble on another experience that pulled me onward," writes Chris Duff, recounting his solo circumnavigation of Ireland by sea kayak in the summer of 1996. "Stroke by stroke, four miles an hour, Ireland was filling me with its life blood." Beginning and ending in Dublin, Duff paddled 1,200 miles over the course of three months. Sometimes he piloted his frail craft through waters too tumultuous even for hardy local fisherman; other times he sought refuge in sixth-century monastic ruins on coastal islands or waited out storms for days on end in his tent. In this sense, Duff's journey is a study in contrasting worlds: land and sea; past and present; solitude and society. The story's suspense comes not from a questionable outcome but in the surprise of daily encounters. Who or what relic of the past will the author stumble upon next? Ultimately it is Duff's openness to ancient and elemental forces, expressed in starkly honest prose, that propels his narrative through the churning waters of Irish history and landscape. But this is also the story of a sea kayaker at the top of his game, dealing with nature's harsh blows and quiet caresses. --Kristopher Kaiyala

                                      Book Description

A sea kayak battles the freezing Irish waters as the morning sun rises out of the countryside. On the western horizon is the pinnacle of Skellig Michael-700 feet of vertical rock rising out of exploding seas. Somewhere on the isolated island are sixth-century monastic ruins where the light of civilization was kept burning during the Dark Ages by early Christian Irish monks. Puffins surface a few yards from the boat, as hundreds of gannets wheel overhead on six foot wing spans. The ocean rises violently and tosses paddler and boat as if they were discarded flotsam. This is just one day of Chris Duff's incredible three month journey.

The tale of this trip by kayak around Ireland is full of stories, history, observations, and best of all experiences in a kayak in these rough seas. The accounts of the history and people of Ireland are very well written. I enjoyed this book immensely and urge all you enjoy kayaking or travel to read it.

To kayak around Ireland is unfathomable for me. Incredible that a person can do that. Still, there wasn't enough variation in this story to push it to the realm of "great adventure books". The beautifully written descriptions of the landscapes and people, though, make up for the lack of thrills. It does earn the 4 stars. I enjoyed the book, but I was glad that it was over in the end. For more adventure, try Running the Amazon. For a similar book with 1) poorer writing but 2) "interesting" characters who are easy to laugh at, try Keep Australia on your Left.

This book is a pleasure to read. Chris Duff are a humble paddler who strike the essence of seakayaking and all it's about. His meeting with the people, the thought of the land he travels throug is some of the most enjoyable reeding I have done.

                                      1 out of 5 stars A mind-numbing slog.......2005-10-06

Chris Duff's journey and skill as a kayaker are not in question here. He's definitely got skills and experience.

What was maddening about this book was the starry-eyed reverence, awe and humility he had for every single damn rock and cliff and farmhouse he ran across. Every stone "spoke" to him, every cliff called out the timeless power of the sea, every ancient monastery still had ghosts running around in it.

His encounters with the people of Ireland at least brought him back to the living, somewhat, but even then, he has this sense of awe for the simple farming and fishing folk that, I'm sorry, just gets old after a while. He talks about visiting a pub on one stop, and being both exhilirated and driven to tears in the same song. Really? Call me a cynic, but Chris might want to adjust his meds.

I came away from this book thinking one of two things: Either Chris' "book" persona is a some ideal that he has in his head of what a serious "writer" and traveler should be... and that there are other bits of his character that for one reason or another he chose not to share. Like a sense of humor, perhaps.

Or this book really is a deep, honest, view into this guy's psyche. In which case, he sounds tedious, pretentious and boring.

I really loved this book! While not a kayaker,I had been round Ireland recently and seen from the shore many of the places described by Duff - but he did a far better job of it than I could ever do! I liked this book so much I bought copies of it for people I thought would enjoy it. I had to force myself to slow down when reading this book to get the full benefit of the beauty of his writing!

This book was given to me when I was grieving the death of my boyfriend who died at he age of 27. It got me thru some very hard times. I would recommend this beautiful collection to anyone in need of moments of peace and comfort. That is all of us. God bless David Adam!

A beautiful collection of Celtic poems and prayers. They are written in everyday language, accessible, and relevant to our times. The prayers evoke a connection with the Divine Spirit irrespective of religious affiliation. I especially enjoyed selecting a particular one and meditating on it. Very rich!
