Good.... could be better........2006-01-23
I enjoyed reading Tabb and Silverstein's Beyond Vegas quite a bit. While some chapters ended up relatively untouched for personal reasons (Wyoming ski lodge elopement, too cold: New Mexico kiva ruins shindig, too weird), all the ideas were creative and well thought out. I can only think of one chapter that seemed like something anyone could have thought of (Ch. 1, wedding in a castle in Scotland).
Beyond that, the writers/partners were quite ingenous and thrifty, finding wonderful wedding sites at the drop of an incredibly inexpensive hat. In Santorini, Greece, the couple married on the balcony of their rented villa, overlooking the black volcanic cliffs and ocean-covered caldera of the Cyclades. Cliche? I think not. In Figi, the whole crew geared up in traditional skirts for a native wedding complete with National Geographic-quality melee.
A word to the wise, though-- these vacations were a lot cheaper in 2002, just after 9/11, when Tabb and Silverstein eloped those dozen times. The preface says that the couple never spent more than $5,000 on their most expensive elopement. Elopements are rated in the book on a dollar scale from "$" to "$$$$", and Satorini was given a "$$". When my beau and I looked into what that would cost in 2006 dollars (going to all the same hotels and booking the cheapest flight), we were shocked to find that the price of the same vacation would be no less than $5,000. While that's still a fraction of the cost of a white wedding, it's no "$$" on a 5K max scale. Take that into consideration as you read along.
The best eloping book out there.......2003-07-11
If you are considering eloping, I highly recommend that you get your hands on a copy of Beyond Vegas. It is the best book that is out there on the subject. Though it may be more popular if the title reflected better what it was about.
I bought both this book and Let's Elope when planning our escape from a typical wedding. Let's Elope can get you excited about the idea of eloping, but does not really provide much good information on how you would actually go about planning an event in any of the countries in which you might be interested. Beyond Vegas actually gives you the details you need to plan your wedding (elopment) in 25 countries, and we actually used this information to plan our wedding in Scotland. The authors actually got married in all of the destinations discussed in their book, and give all the pointers you need, not just what can be found on the official country registrar web sites.
Good but you can do better..........2002-10-10
...researching on your own. I bought this book because I'm a travel agent, want to evetually get marrried away, and am always interested in what others suggest to clients.
Honestly, I found the book an "ok" source of info. Sadly, I ended up wondering where the couple involved in the book would get married next and what they would wear.
I am not opposed to destination wedding guidebooks, but this one could be a bit more interesting.
We got married in Scotland because of this book!.......2002-01-15
My fiance and I dreamt about having a small wedding in Europe with a few close friends and family, but we didn't know where, and we had no idea what would be involved. After reading this book, we fell in love with the idea of getting married in Scotland. The book got us on the right track for researching it and made us realize that getting married there would definitely be possible and feasible.
This book gives a great overview of the logistics of getting married in various countries...it even rates the countries in terms of the difficulty of getting married there if you are a U.S. citizen. It is a great starting point if you are thinking of getting married in another country.
Great Book -- Change the Title.......2001-05-08
This book is about eloping --- not gambling. Hey wait a minute, maybe it is gambling!
Seriously . . . a fun read to stir up great fantasies.
Book Description
This book traces the exploration and charting of the Pacific Ocean through rare maps of Japan and the varied islands of Oceania from the 1700s. It follows the story from classical times through the turn of the 20th century, telling the tales of seafarers who ventured eastward from Asia and were the Pacific's greatest explorers.
Through dozens of vintage maps, you'll learn how Portuguese mariners added major islands in the Southwest Pacific to the map in the early 16th century while Spanish explorers plotted vague specks of land in the vast center of the map. Witness as Dutch discoveries in Australia add significantly to the evolving image of the ocean, while the known islands of Oceania remained few, scattered, and so poorly charted as to be impossible for others to find.

Opening European eyes on the Pacific.......2006-11-16
"The European mapping of the Pacific was at times a mapping of the European psyche," writes Thomas Suarez.
The mere fact that the Europeans did it, at such cost, was an aspect of a unique psychological outlook. The people who lived in and around the Pacific never bothered.
There were a variety of reasons, some merely technical, for that. For whatever reasons, the indigenes were content with local maps. The drive to know the whole world did not inspire them.
The Europeans had crass motivations as well. After 300 years of effort, there were still a few spots unknown to them in 1800 -- and even as a big a place as Hawaii had been found barely two decades earlier. But in the 19th century the quest for "sandalwood, trepang, seals, whales and furs" exposed every last scrap of land to purchasers of European maps.
"Early Mapping of the Pacific" follows on Suarez's gorgeous "Early Mapping of Southeast Asia" and will have even more interest for Hawaii readers. Hawaii gets more detailed attention than anyplace else, and it is easy to see that Suarez has spent plenty of time here.
He writes that "often the mapping and exploration of the Pacific seems the stuff of novels," and his own late entry into the field was, if not novelistic, distinctly unusual.
A classical violinist, Suarez was giving concerts way off Broadway -- places like Moen island in Chuuk in Micronesia -- when he became interested in the places, the people, the stories and the maps.
For a generation, he's been an authority and consultant on old maps.
Even without the detailed text, it is easy and curious to follow the progress -- sometimes regress -- of European knowledge of the Pacific over time.
When the Pacific was completely unknown to Europe, the best maps Europe had already showed close correspondence with the shapes and locations of the Caribbean and Africa, though the Caribbean had been unknown 20 years earlier.
Often -- not always, by any means -- the Europeans in their restless inquisition acquired accurate maps almost overnight. Even in fairly early maps, some parts of the Pacific begin to look quite familiar, though others remain seriously confused. It took a long time, for example, to learn that Australia and New Guinea are not connected.
Even by the time of James Cook, a buyer of maps in Amsterdam or London had to choose between very different opinions about what lay in the Pacific.
One topic that Suarez devotes considerable attention to is whether the Spaniards found Hawaii before Cook did in 1779.
There are early maps that show islands about where Hawaii is.
Suarez is not persuaded that they represent anything more than the other fugitive islands that cartographers in Europe were led and misled to draw on maps even into the 19th century.
There is an even stronger argument against Spanish discovery.
The maps that show "Hawaii" show other islands to the east and to the west that we know do not exist, and the accuracy of these maps for the west coast of America is poor also.
If "Hawaii" on those maps is genuine, it is the only part that is.
Excellent introduction to the topic suitable for map collectors.......2005-10-28
The author does an excellent job of describing and illustrating key milestones in the mapping of the Pacific region. He integrates the history of exploration and of cartography in an effective manner that adds life to the plentiful and abundant maps that illustrate the text. The book is an excellent introduction for the serious collector of antique maps of the Pacific. Its a beautiful book and informative book, however, it could be a difficult read at times for those less interested in maps or history.
Inconsistent review.......2004-09-01
The review of this volume suggests that it is a worthy work of some substance (as do comments elsewhere). But only one star? Is this an error?
Unusually readable and accurate.......2004-08-25
This is a vast topic and the author has taken on a huge job. He has written a truly excellent text that is technically correct, yet very readable. He has also managed to do somethig very difficult - integrate the text successfully with maps, most of which are illustrated beautifully. So in one work, we have the scholarly interpretation of the history and its integration with the cultural artifacts of such exploration.- the maps. I think one of the chief attributes is that his book has opened so many doors to this subject that it will reman a standard for a very ong time. It is also a beautiful production (although the subtitle sounds like it was written by a desperate English major) and is easily in the fine tradition of Suarez' other books.

Book Description
From bamboo rafts to the double-hulled voyaging canoe, this book is a celebration of the traditional boats of Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. The people of these island countries depend on the sea, and their ships reflect their mastery of sailing and shipbuilding. Early sailors built simple dugout canoes, but the invention of the outrigger and the double-hulled canoe allowed the Polynesians to navigate rough waters and sail thousands of miles more than 1,000 years before the Greeks and Romans mastered the Mediterranean. From New Zealand to Hawaii to Indonesia, this book discusses fishing techniques, navigational methods, and boat building facts.

Product Description
"Covered Calls and Naked Puts" is the second book by Ronald Groenke on the subject of making money by selling options. His first book was "The Money Tree: Risk Free Options Trading". A third book now available is "Cash for Life". All three books are written in novel format. The main character, Rob Graham, is a retired finance professor. He meets a former student on Marco Island, Florida and begins revealing his secrets about selling covered calls and naked puts. The reader learns along with the student how to select the right stocks in building a sound portfolio and then the best calls and puts to sell for a monthly income.
Customer Reviews:
Good Presentation of the Concept of Covered Calls and Naked Puts.......2007-08-30
Overall I would recommend this book if you are new to covered calls and naked puts and want to gain a basic understanding of how they work. While income can be generated selling options a good stock picking strategy is a must if you are going to be successful. With that said I wouldn't necessarily recommend the stock picking technique that is outlined in the book. I also found it extremely annoying that the author constantly plugged his software package.
annoying writing.......2007-08-12
The writing style detracts form the otherwise good explanation of what options are and the recommended techniques.
VERY HANDS ON AND INFORMATIVE.......2006-07-26
If you can get past the format of the book, which is a fictional tale of a retiired professor teaching a Florida community about option investing, and apprecite the actual easy to apply formulas he gives you, then this is a must read.
He goes over everything that made hom successful with "safe" option investing in full detail.
1. Stock selection
2. Naked put selection,
3. Acceptable rates of return for covered calls based on
expiration period.
These are all spelled out explicitly with the formulas to calculate every variable, along with his stock screening criteria which could be applied for free on any financial web-site.
I read some reviews that implied he wrote the book to sell software. I do not think that is the case, as he laid out his formulas so clearly, that anyone could apply them to an EXCEL spreadsheet, along with stock screening criteria. His willingness to give you the formulas and other variables required to succeed are unique to the investing, especially options education, industry.
FOr the money, there is no better value.
Conservative option.......2006-03-17
A good read..the story-line is cute if you dont take it too seriously...Its like reading a novel from a mathematician...it had some very good conservative ways of investing...very good for a novice/intermediate investor with options...
Don't waste your money.......2005-06-15
Please don't buy this book based on the title.
The book is 150 pages long and written (badly written) as a novel with only about 10 pages total devoted to options. Needless to say I'm sorely disappointed with this book.

It's ok but not what I expected.......2000-08-14
I didn't need the inventory pages...I use a book designed for that with many more pages. Those few pages wouldn't help with the size of my collection! I was hoping for more plastic sheets, some divided with various sizes for displaying Certificates of Authenticity etc...At least I can add my own pages with a three hole punch; possibly buy photo refills to see if they'll work. I will put it to use...it's just not what I expected.

A superb in-depth manual especially recommended for ecologists studying the Sonoran desert area.......2005-10-12
Co-authored by plant ecologists Raymond Turner and Tony Burgess along with botanist Janice Bowers, Sonoran Desert Plants: An Ecological Atlas is an enlarged and thoroughly revised edition of the original 1972 atlas. Packed cover to cover with figures, distribution maps, black-and-white photographs, and detailed information concerning the taxonomy and ecology of 339 plants, Sonoran Desert Plants is a superb in-depth manual especially recommended for ecologists studying the Sonoran desert area. A glossary, index, and impressively extensive compendium of cited literature round out this specialist's resource.
Unique reference in its subject area and well done........1997-12-04
I found this book to be quite unique in the way it covers its subject area. I know of no other book which seeks to treat in a botanical manner the more conspicuous and important woody plants of the Sonoran Desert biome. I discovered the existence of plants that I previously did not know about. Each species is covered very well, with notes on its appearance, distribution, ethnobotany, and ecology. Excellent half-tone black and white photographs. I can't recommend this book too highly if one is interested in learning more about the Sonoran Desert woody plants.

Dissapointed .......2005-09-08
Expected real photos of art deco interior design and the book contains only cartoons.....and cartoons of very poor designs.
Title should be: Authentic Art Deco Desings in Full Color.......2005-02-01
This book is nice to have for the low price however, it was not what I had expected. The book contained only the illustrations of the designers' concepts for the rooms. It would have been better if it had included photographs of the rooms or any information about the designs or designers.
Great illustrations........1999-11-17
The title might be somewhat misleading. It is indeed art deco interiors, but it contains only illustrations, so don't await to see real homes or interiors. The illustrations of Ruhlmann, Mallet-Stevens, Chareau and others are very nicely executed though, and it is interesting to see how they imagined rooms to be arranged. There is a small introduction and biographical notes only. It would have been nice to see the illustrations together with photographs of authentic art deco furniture and furnishing.

Product Description
A most unusual book of twenty long unseen photographs of Norma Jeane Dougherty, taken in 1945, a few years before she emerged as Marilyn Monroe. Enjoy this lovely lady as she gracefully poses for informal yet stimulating pictures on the beach north of Santa Monica, California. All in black and white in this remarkable collection of memorabilia at its best. In this book is a multi-page report of the entire day and the photo techniques used. These pictures represent her first commercial modeling assignment.

It should be called a christmas carroll for children the same old norma jean story there is no never was a norma jean only hollywood paper so is his book see marilyn monroe foundation for how to read real story
Not necessarily a bad book..........2004-07-03
I can't say I agree with the above comment of 1 star. Yes the book is kinda like a catalog. However, you do for the first time get to see all of William Carroll's prints (who is a wonderful man I have to add) from his photo session with Norma Jeane, yes they are in black&white. The Forward by Mr. Carroll is an interesting read as well. I agree that the book could have been displayed much nicer (color photographs, more text, hardback) but I do think its a nice addition to your collection, especially if your the type who has to have everything Marilyn. Personally, I have contacted Mr. Carroll about receiving one of his NJ prints, as they can be found nowhere else. So if this book was a "catalog" to do this, I don't really think thats a bad idea. His photo's are gorgeous.
I also think that do to the limited availability, and the semi- high price for a rather small book, that this will eventually be a sought after collectable.
I rated the book a 3 because I agree that the book could have had more potential to be nicer looking (like Milton's Marilyn, ect), but I also think it is a neat book to have. Then again I truly love photo's of Norma Jeane. So I guess it depends on what your looking for in Marilyn photo books.
Not a book, but a catalog.......2004-06-13
This is a marketing ploy to sell custom color prints for William Carroll. This is a very small book with only twenty photos.
The cover is the only photo shown in the original color. All of the others are in black and white, poor quality, very grainy.
The purpose of this little pamphlet is to sell the prints, not to showcase Mr. Carroll's photographs of young Norma Jeane for her fans. I would not recommend this book to anyone, unless you are interested in shopping for a color print, then it might come in handy. But the high price makes it unrealistic.
This book could have been a very beautiful edition of rare
photographs of a fresh, young Norma Jeane. It would have been
a wonderful addition to any collection. As it is, it is a sad little book that does not deliver what it promised.

Sandwiched between Alfred the Great and Æthelstan.......2003-05-19
Edward the Elder is perhaps the most neglected of the Anglo-Saxon kings. Overshadowed by both his father Alfred and his successor Æthelstan, he did much on his own to expand the domination of Wessex across all of England.
This book is a series of papers presented in 1999 at a conference on Edward the Elder held at the Manchester Centre for Anglo-Saxon Studies. Twenty-two papers by some of the most noted experts in their fields explore the archaeology, charter evidence, textiles, dynastic marriages, coinage, foreign relations, scriptorium production, and more of Edward the Elder's reign.
Of particular interest is the consideration of Edward's activities as king. Was he merely continuing his father Alfred the Great's program of recovering the Danelaw, fortifying the burhs, and incorporating Mercia into a comprehensive "Kingdom of the English"? Or did Edward follow his own policies in light of the opportunities he faced?
An outstanding multi-disciplinary insight into this much overlooked Anglo-Saxon king's rule.
