Enjoyed the personal stories but more the basic theory about fitness and how to achieve what ever level you desire for what ever reason. I have started the first week at beginning level and now can see many parts of my body that have not been worked in a long time. I do normally bike a lot and my life requires manual labor every day. I expect I will see quick results as promised. Don't worry about any sales gimmicks either because you can get through the first level with less than $100 normal equipment if you don't already have. I am on week 5 of the Hyper fitness program (trekker level) and I love it! I am on week 5 of the Hyper fitness program (trekker level) and I love it! I am getting stronger and leaner. Even though I have suffered from injuries in the past (pyriformis syndrome and tendinitis in my wrists), my body is developing evenly, and without injuries so far. I think this is due to the fact that the exercises are varied and the routine changes every two weeks, which also keeps things interesting. I was getting bored with my old workout, now I am looking forward to trying new combinations of exercises. I do find the directions to some of the exercises difficult to follow at times and I find myself wondering if I am doing them right. I was told that the Trekker DVD will be coming out at the end of September, that will definitely help.
Motivation ++++++.......2007-08-08
I heard Sean on NPR and immediately bought the book. As a 59 year old woman who ran a marathon at 50 and did a 337 mile bike ride in 3 days from Raleigh, NC to DC at 54, I have be more than a little distressed that in spite of exercising 5 days a week, I have still been putting on weight. Now I realize that my same old, same old routine is the reason. I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!! It makes so much sense and the exercises are so much fun. They are challenging to be sure but you really want to try them. And I haven't felt sore from exercising in a long time. Although I was cycling, jogging, walking and working out with weights, I wasn't challenging myself at all. All that is different now.
It is difficult sometimes to visualize the exercises that don't have photos. However I understand that the DVDs for all three levels will be out soon. The Trekker DVD is in editing right now.
If you're bored and unmotivated but really WANT to get fit or fitter, this is the book for you.
Eccentric, edgy, and exclusive.......2007-07-22
Unless you are on stimulants, around the clock, this book prescribes to eccentric and risky exercises that could not only hurt but also could cost loss of life. The author's skinness allows him to perform hyperactive movement at low risk than the average population could contemplate. The females photographed in the book could not catch up with the author's restless mind.
The two males photographed performing exercises sound like running away from a mental asylum or drug rehab. Though many sports activities entail elements of risk, this author tends to venture into the extremes with little or no restraint on pondering of what might go wrong. There is no purpose of all of the exercises in the book other than rushing the body to work faster, harder, and beyond reason.
The positive aspect of thinking aggressively and creatively is minimized in this book by the lack of systemic planning on how to advance in performance and how to avert traumas. The most probable traumas that could result form asymmetric and impulsive motions is tearing tendons and muscles with long term handicap. I wonder whether the author is still alive or bed ridden after reading his eccentric approach to fitness?

As a long-time runner and adventure racer, I found the exercises in Sean's book to be the best at keeping me motivated and challenging in many new ways. When combined with Sean's personal, amazing fitness explorations, and the nutritional aspects he includes, this book becomes a must read for those looking to take fitness to the next level.

Best review? More like the worst. Too bad there isn't a 0 star rating. The books practice tests (well REA's practice tests in general) are terrible. I think the last time anyone from the REA took a real AP or SAT test was back in the 1970s or something. The review section is helpful just in terms of basic grammar, but this book is not an effecient way to study.
Full of mistakes unless revised.......2000-10-22
I am an English teacher, writer and translator, and I work with students preparing for the SAT II Writing Test. I ordered this title, by authors Conner and Hixon, in the hopes that it would provide either good review material or good practice tests. As I worked through the book, I found quite a few typographical errors and some badly written test questions. I also found at least one contradiction: a grammar rule given in the review material is broken by the authors themselves later on in the book. My feeling is that the book was rushed to press without adequate proofing. Careless production from a publisher of educational books is highly unacceptable. Unless this book has been checked for errors, revised and reprinted, I cannot recommend it to anyone.

There are some lovely color photos of Koms here. That is the extent of the nice things I can say. Most of the book is low-rate filler and shameless product promotion. There is a disclaimer at the front, in tiny type, that states the only original text written by the "authors" is the chapter "introduction to the breed". All the rest is hackneyed, dated generic blather on "how to raise your dog" - much of it incorrect, and potentially harmful to your animal. If you must buy it, look at the pretty pics, but ignore the textual twaddle.

It would be quite useful for a gardening enthusiast new to the area or to someone new to gardening. Unfortunately, most gardens covered are already familiar to gardeners who have lived here for a few years.

This book shows what it is like to be in the middle of a firestorm in the wilderness. The people who were floating the river did nothing wrong, they were just caught in a bad situation. By not panicking, they were able to survive. There is also some education about the long-term effects of a forest fire.

The biography, although not totally accurate when reciting Raft's early existency (no Raft biography is), is heartfelt and insightful in explaining the motivations behind one of the most interesting figures of the 21st century. You see George Raft as he was, a sweet, charming "gentle"-man who's rise to fame was fueled by feelings of inadequacy. Mr. Yablonsky's has done a masterful job in bring the real George Raft to life; in contrast to the mean-spirited attempt by James Robert Parish. Although the authors provide good factual information, they are never able to pierce the psyche of George Raft. The book is a mean-spirited, one-dimensional view of George Raft; nothing more. George Orwell must be an excellent writer because, in all honesty, I wasn't overwhelmingly interested in reading about the Spanish Civil War. Nevertheless, I really, really liked this book.
Understanding the history behind the war isn't a necessity, but I definitely recommend bringing yourself up to speed via wikipedia before starting. That way, Orwell's personal recollections, which are the meat of the book, will be more relevant to you.
Orwell presents a refreshingly honest account of the war and his own evolving take on it. Spain's resulting chaos is a prescient warning for those who take too passionately and seriously partisan politics. Orwell shows that it never takes too long before ideals are thrown out the window to be replaced by the centuries repeated same old quest for power.
I recommend this book to anyone interested in the Spanish Civil War, human nature's struggle for power, or Orwell's insightful, often humorous observations.

"Homage to Catalonia" is a memoir of George Orwell's experiences during the Spanish Civil War. A committed socialist, Orwell was right in the thick of the action fighting on the side of the doomed Republic.
The book is at its best when it gives Orwell's first-hand account of life as a soldier, but is less compelling when he attempts to explain the complicated Republican politics, rivally, and in-fighting of the time.
Orwell's socialist politics also seem rather naive these days, given what has happened in the intervening 70 years.
Interesting for its personal insights, but read Anthony Beevor's great book for a comprehensive history of the Spanish Civil War.
Revolution & Politics: A Must-Read.......2007-02-19
George Orwell was one of the century's most honest, decent, and lucid writers about the human element in warfare and poltical revolution. His antitotalitarian novels "Animal Farm" and "1984," which made him famous, grew partly from his acute understanding of the events of World War II and partly from his personal experiences as a Loyalist volunteer in the Spanish Civil War, which is the subject of "Homage to Catalonia."
Orwell was a Marxist-Leninist in the 1930s, sufficiently committed to risk his own life in battle to help bring about a people's revolution in Spain. This memoir, written in 1937-38 while the war was still on, records how his idealism was battered by the cynical, pro-USSR politics he saw betray the Marxist ideal on the one hand, and the irreducible practicality of most ordinary people that makes it an impossible dream on the other. In the process, Orwell's contempt for the low standards of news-media accuracy only increased. Fans of Fox and CNN, take note.
By 1947 Orwell, the Marxist idealist, had become convinced that despite all their shortcomings and failures, the liberal Western democracies had developed the best form of political governance yet possible. Since the 1930s, one might observe, a leavening of socialist thought in these nations has brought about societies that are closer to Marx's egalitarian goals than the inflexible, authoritarian regimes that he directly inspired. The good intentions of "people's revolutions" are sure to be betrayed by the most ruthless leaders and factions they create. For every socioeconomic wrong they correct, such revolutions inevitably create many more of their own, totalitarian control and denial of due process being among the worst.
"Homage to Catalonia," written at the moment of Orwell's complete break with the Leninist variety of Marxism, is a model of fair-minded reporting. Anyone interested in the Spanish Civil War, the '30s, revolutionary politics, or even "For Whom the Bell Tolls," should read this book.
As somebody else mentioned, the fine recent movie "Land and Freedom" takes its inspiration from Orwell's book and ought to be watched in conjunction with it. Though fitted out with an imaginary love story, it is completely faithful to Orwell's spirit in "Homage to Catalonia."
Compulsively readable..........2007-02-16
As with most everything Orwell, this book will not have you leafing ahead impatiently to find out if and when things get good. If there is one book you read on the Spanish Civil War (and I bet it will be only one), this should be it.
