A potentially helpful guide.......2006-05-30
This travel - guide provides the basics in regard to food, lodging, synagogues. It covers the greatest share of places in which there are Jewish communities. It also provides brief histories of the local Jewish communities.
It does not have feature articles of great interest.
It is a reasonably done, potentially useful guide.

The information in How to File for Bankruptcy is so complete that a person can file virtually on his own, without needing to hire a lawyer. By no means does the book encourage filing for bankruptcy, but it will help anyone in serious financial trouble determine if bankruptcy might be a sensible course to take, and examines what kind is appropriate for different individuals. All of the necessary forms are included, complete with explicit directions. Like all Nolo Press titles, this is a straightforward, no-nonsense book of useful advice and specific guidance, written in clear, easy-to-understand language.

I'm surprised on the great quality. Nice packaging and fast delievery helped allowed me to get right to work. Thank you.
This Could Be The Right Book For you.......2007-06-29
If you are considering personal bankruptcy, will satisfy the new means test or have a steady w-2 income you may want to file bankruptcy under Chapters 7 or 13. If you are considering one of the chapters, this is a great book for you. For businesses or individuals with more substantial assets or income, the appropriate Chapter would be Chapter 11. The book that I like on that subject is Chapter 11 Business Reorganizations: For Business Leaders, Accountants And Lawyers
Very helpful resource.......2007-04-25
This review refers to the 13th edition of the book, which does cover the new bankruptcy law revision of 2006. Please read the editorial and customer reviews as to why this book was so helpful.
The author does a good job explaining how to file your own bankruptcy "pro se" (which means you are your own attorney and responsible for finding the answers to your own legal questions.)
At the time the 13th edition was printed, the author didn't know if any of the state bankruptcy courts would grant an indigent filer relief from the bankruptcy filing fee. This is because there was a difference between the federal agency that created the exemption document and the agency that says such requests can be granted. Apparently, this difference of opinion has since been resolved. In my state, Washington, the judge did grant me exemption from filing the court fee, a savings of over [...].
My bankruptcy was a pretty straightforward chapter 7, even though I had taken out a business license as a sole proprietor. As I had no clients and no business income, I could go ahead and file as an individual.
The author commends the reader for having taken charge of their financial crisis and having made the difficult decision to file for bankruptcy. It would also have been helpful if he'd included a few helpful tips on emotional and mental preparation. For example, people under stress tend to forget commen sense advice like: get enough sleep, exercise, and healthy food. Organize all your financial records in a quiet and neat environment, etc. Write down what you've done and what you need to accomplish. And so forth.
In my case, because I could have been better organized, I ended up paying two times a [...] amendment fee because I forgot to include all creditors on my mailing matrix and other related forms.
(As a side note, many credit card companies own their own credit collections agencies with completely different names. To be on the safe side, list both the original creditor and the "collection agency" that they supposedly "sold" the debt to in your bankruptcy forms. However, when totaling the debt, do not count the same amount twice. On your mailing matrix, include both the orginal creditor and any collection agencies they have sold their debt to. This will cover your [...]. If you list only the collection agency and not the original creditor, you might be responsible for paying off the debt because the orignal creditor wasn't listed in your bankruptcy forms.)
Student loans are usually not discharged but you should go ahead and list them anyway so the judge knows your total debt load.
Most filers choose to hire an attorney. I was one of three people who chose to go "pro se" out of over 30 filers. That really surprised me. My meeting with the trustee lasted less than five minutes.
Just because someone goes with an attorney doesn't mean that attorney will be complete and thorough. I witnessed two attorneys who did not properly prepare their clients for potential questions the trustee asked, all of which are described in this book in a special listing. In my case, the trustee did not ask all the questions listed in the book but I was sure glad the author listed them so I could be prepared in case he did choose to ask them. Did those people get their money's worth? I don't know.
The creditor's meeting is when you can tell the trustee if there have been any changes since you first filed for bankruptcy. Since this meeting is recorded now is the time to tell them. In my case, I reported assets I had failed to list (hobby supplies [...]), assets that had been stolen from my home this month, and a car I no longer owned as it had been auctioned off by a towing company.
The two biggest reasons people file for bankruptcy are medically related and poor credit card usage. Both those reasons fit my profile. I cut up all my credit cards and now use only my debit card, cash, or checks. I now have a financial budget and feel like a load has been lifted off my shoulders.
The only reason I have for repairing my credit rating is if I choose to buy a house. At this time I don't have any plans for doing so. However, for those who do want to improve their credit score, your best bet is to see if your local credit union or bank will give you a secured credit card, which will only allow you to "charge" amounts that you have placed in a special account tied to the card.
The new law states that filers must take a pre and post budget class. Each cost me [...].
If you choose to go "pro se" but hire a typist to prepare your documents, you are still responsible for all the information contained in the forms.
Beware that your filing is public knowledge. I was surprised at the number of predatory lenders that sent me mail immediately after I filed. There was also one attorney who sent me a solicitation letter. You must shred all these letters for your own good.

Check out The New Bankruptcy - Will it Work for You?
Out-of-date, but still good for background material........2006-01-13
Stephen Elias et al., How to File for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy, Twelfth Edition (Nolo Press, 2005)
Well, I missed the boat on this one. I'd hoped the 2005 12th edition would cover the bankruptcy law changes in some detail, but nope-- this one still covers the old laws. If you're thinking about filing for bankruptcy now, you will likely be better off waiting for Elias' new one, he New Bankruptcy: Will It Work for You? (Nolo, 2006).At this point, it really only has value as an archival document, or something you pick up for background reading while waiting for the new book (after all, not everything in bankruptcy law has changed; you'll still get some valuable info out of this).
The book does an excellent job of explaining why, in general, you don't really need a lawyer to file Chapter 7. Elias etc. go through the forms line-by-line, with copious explanation and recommendations of when you will need a lawyer based on your answers to a number of the questions.
Solid stuff, I just with I'd gotten to it earlier. Now, I'm in the same boat you are-- waiting for the new one (which was supposed to drop Dec. 19, 2005, but oesn't seem to have seen the light of day yet). *** ½

Colorful and useful - to an extent.......2000-11-09
The first thing that becomes obvious as you open the book is the brilliance of the fantastic photography throughout. It is also one of the book's shortcomings - this unrealistic beauty allows the reader to set unrealistic expectations. Considering the fact that this is a beginner's guide, this book contains a number of things a beginner isn't likely to need and that should have been relegated to an expert's manual. Among these things are the breeding guidelines that are present in every species' description. Likewise, several very important things have not been covered in sufficient depth. The section on feeding is quite limited. More space should have been alotted to heating and UV lamps. Vivarium construction isn't covered in nearly enough detail. There are no guidelines for picking out healthy animals at the stores, and the two-page "Health" spread isn't nearly sufficient. There are also descriptions of some 140 species of reptiles (including snakes and turtles), amphibians, and arthropods (tarantulas, stick insects, etc.). The sections on non-chordates (insects) are especially scant, given the degree to which the average beginner is unfamiliar with these. Each entry contains handy icons gauging aggressiveness, food preferences, number of offspring, environment, and the average difficulty of keeping the specific animal alive. And, of course, the ever-present, brilliant photographs. Generally, an underwhelming effort that nevertheless opens up several possibilities.

Book Description
Since the degree of affection a thing deserves depends upon the degree of its value, and the previous chapter shows that the value of books is unspeakable, it is quite clear to the reader what is the probable conclusion from this. I say probable, for in moral science we do not insist upon demonstration.
Book Description
[A]ll who are smitten with the love of books think cheaply of the world and wealth; as Jerome says to Vigilantius: The same man cannot love both gold and books... The hideousness of vice is greatly reprobated in books, so that he who loves to commune with books is lead to detest all manner of vice. The demon, who derives his name from knowledge, is most effectually defeated by the knowledge of books, and through books his multitudinous deceits and the endless labyrinths of his guile are laid bare to those who read... -from "Chapter XV: Of the Advantages of the Love of Books" British writer and bishop RICHARD AUNGERVILLE (1287-1345), AKA Richard de Bury, was a royal tutor and a player in court intrigue, and is today perhaps the most famous book lover of the medieval world. Owner of an immense personal library, the bishop penned this valentine to the wisdom of books and the joy of collecting them, most likely completing it just before his death. (This, considered the definition English edition, was translated by Oxford scholar Ernest C. Thomas and first published in 1888.) Delightfully expansive in its bibliomania, the Philobiblon waxes rhapsodic about: . The Degree of Affection That Is Properly Due to Books . The Numerous Opportunities We Have Had of Collecting a Store of Books . Why We Have Preferred Books of Liberal Learning to Books of Law . Why We Have Not Wholly Neglected the Fables of the Poets . Who Ought to Be Special Lovers of Books . The Advantages of the Love of Books . Showing Due Propriety in the Custody of Books . The Manner of Lending All Our Books to Students . and much more. OF INTEREST TO: readers of medieval literature, book lovers

Book Description
Ask the tough questions. How can I cut down on energy use in my kitchen? What should I use to unclog the bathroom sink? Which cars create the least pollution? Should I or shouldn't I fertilize my lawn? These are just a few of the issues that families face every day in the suburbs. In this one-of-a-kind guide, author Warren Schultz points out the environmental and personal costs of traditional, toxic household practices and offers safe, natural, and easy alternatives.
Customer Reviews:
Bathroom Read.......2007-07-11
This book was average to me. It had a lot of good ideas. And I really like the retro 60's theme and design of the book. As a designer it was very creative. But it was kind of simple. Which might be a good thing on this topic. It's really more of a bathroom type book if you know what I mean. It's more of a picture book with each page having 3 or 4 sections on it. Basically it was a coffee table book that I used in the bathroom. But we won't tell the library that. If you live in the suburbs and want to think about living in a more sustainable, then it's a good intro.
Great for anyone new to organics.......2007-01-24
This is a great book for anyone who would like to start making a few environmentally-responsible changes in their life, but arent quite ready to jump into a full vegan-greenpeace style life. It gives ideas that allow you to help the environment (and your wallet), without really disrupting life as you know it. Everything from kitchen and bath, to outdoor maintenence, to organic methods to get rid of household pests.
Getting the most from the status quo.......2001-11-11
You're there. You have the family, the house, the yard, the car, the job that requires a commute. Given the way that a lot of us live, it can be very useful to have a check-list -- to do a walk-around of home and garden and see the latest thinking on how to minimize our impact on the environment. As someone who has been following these issues for years, I found it interesting that the evidence on some things seems to argue for different choices -- and that I had been way off on my thinking in other specifics. It's a pleasurable read -- the retro photos remind me that the suburbanization of America was rooted in a more innocent time, when few people had the foresight to see its results. What is beyond the scope of the book, but the more important question, is how we get to the point where we are creating not 20% less damage but 50% or even no damage at all -- and those are the "tough questions" that this book just does not ask.
Good introduction, but not much more, and only if you have $.......2001-10-11
This thin book is packed with information for someone new to "living lightly in the world." Broken out by living area -- bedrooms, bathrooms, laundry room, yards, etc. -- the book suggests alternative products and approaches to everyday living. Schultz takes on questions like "Should I Fertilize My Lawn?", "Cloth or Disposable Diapers?", and "Plastic or Paper Shopping Bags?" His writing is clear, concise, and his explanations easy to understand. He also includes a number of "recipes" for cleaning using vinegar, baking soda, and/or hydrogen peroxide, as well as a useful -- if brief -- list of sources.
Unfortunately, I was hoping for some new information here, but all I found was what has been said before in any number of places. Hang your clothes outside instead of using the dryer, use non-chlorine bleach, don't run your car's air conditioner, keep your tires inflated, don't drive an SUV.
One more significant problem I had with the majority of Schultz's suggestions: he gives no regard to cost. He suggests readers install front-loading washing machines and gas dryers, buy organic produce, buy only organic cotton clothing, and use organic lawn fertilizers. Not once does he note that all of these suggestions are considerably more expensive than their traditional counterparts. When buying a new washer, do you spend $500 on the traditional model, or $1,000 on the eco-friendly model with all the same features? Do you pony up the additional 30-50% for organic cotton clothing (plus shipping!)? How do you work with a grocery budget that is at least 30% more when you buy organic food and cleaning supplies? Organic living, by this standard, is a luxury not for the suburbanite on a budget. Several times he comments that energy savings will recoup the up-front expense, but this takes years in most cases.
What would be great to have seen is a book with more of his simple, effective, inexpensive solutions -- re-using and recycling products, low-cost/low-impact cleaning solutions, innovative solutions to everyday problems. If you're new to organic living and you have the money to spare, this is a great book to buy. Otherwise, save your money and use your head. Get it at the library.
The book title says it all........2001-08-23
This is a terrific book describing simple and manageable methods for improving the suburban family's opportunity to replace environmentally harmful chemical products with safer ones. It includes advice for gardening, washing anything and everything, home maintenance, repairs and shopping, It is extremely easy to read, very well laid out in an appealing format, friendly, concise, and doesn't preach or scold. This book is a wonderful tool for starting or maintaining an environmentally ethical suburban lifestyle without making you feel like a green-earth criminal.

Hollywood, Interrupted is a sometimes frightening, occasionally sad, and frequently hysterical odyssey into the darkest realms of showbiz pathology, the endless stream of meltdowns and flameouts, and the inexplicable behavior on the part of show business personalities.
Charting celebrities from rehab to retox, to jails, cults, institutions, near-death experiences and the Democratic Party, Hollywood, Interrupted takes readers on a surreal field trip into the amoral belly of the entertainment industry. Each chapter â covering topics including warped Hollywood child-rearing, bad medicine, hypocritical political maneuvering and the complicit media â delivers a meticulously researched, interview-infused, attitude heavy dispatch which analyzes and deconstructs the myths created by the celebrities themselves.
Celebrities somehow believe that it's their god-given right to inflict their pathology on the rest of us. Hollywood, Interrupted illustrates how these dysfunctional dilettantes are mad as hell... And we're not going to take it any more.

These are some of the reasons why Hollywood's misbehaving stars do what they do, but over the past few years, their stories have become so outrageous that it's hard to tell what they're actually thinking-if they're thinking at all! In this entertainment industry exposé, Andrew Breitbart and Mark Ebner pull back the curtain to reveal the twisted culture of Hollywood and the preposterous penchants of today's high-profile celebrities. From John T, Tom Cruise, and Ann Heche to Eddie Murphy, Oliver Stone, and Courtney Love, Hollywood, Interrupted presents the mind-altered behavior of the most reality-challenged celebrities from all walks of life and every genre. Hollywood, Interrupted explores how the pathological behavior of celebrities has destroyed comedy, snuffed relationships, and demeaned family values. Each chapter delivers a meticulously researched, interview-infused, attitude-heavy dispatch-which analyzes and deconstructs the myths created by celebrities and their way-too-protective handlers. Customer Reviews:
But why is America still obsessed with them?.......2007-06-07
I wasn't really impressed by this book. I understand that many celebrities are narcissists, shallow people who *think* they are profound and mirror the actions of profound people, all the while craving adulation, money, and prestige, while not thinking about anyone else (they also lack true empathy and conscience, somewhat in the sociopathic style). I understand that they are annoying and shouldn't be representatives of our politics; however, I see nothing wrong with vegetarian celebrities promoting vegetarianism or something of that nature because having compassion towards animals is actually a positive thing. I work with adolescents, some of who have shown cruelty towards animals, and we already know that people who are violent towards animals are then violent towards other people. Also, vegetarianism is good for the health. Anyhow, back to my review. In sum, I think the book really should have explored why the average person, the common man or woman or child, adulates and supports Hollywood. It's our money that feeds the machine. Is it because we have low IQs? I for one never watch television because I realise exactly what it is -- cheap entertainment with boring and repetitive storylines, and don't even get me started with reality shows, I've never kept up with any of them. But in the end the fault is that of America's citizens -- what is the fascination with celebrity and why does America support it? Perhaps there is a hidden narcissism in the regular person who aspires to live like a celebrity, or perhaps the average person, lacking a modicum of IQ, really admires wealth and power and can only see the trappings of wealth and power set before him or her, and is blindsided to everything else? This to me would mean there is also something very wrong with the average American. A book like this, if already using "clinical" terms like narcissism, should have in turn had opinions of more psychiatrists or other professionals and also analysed America's own narcissism and preoccupation with celebrity.
They're Only Human.......2006-07-21
It just goes-to-show what we should have already known; celebrities, like everyone else, are only human. That includes politicians too. Both major parties. Just because someone skyrockets into the limelight, doesn't now make them the experts on what to believe, morals, or who to vote for. Most of these people don't even know what they believe themselves, only the "politically correct" trends-of-the-day. We may enjoy the movies they make, or maybe that beautiful song they just put out, but when it comes to being a spokesperson for today's issues, use your brain and think for yourself.
Dreck: but fascinating for all the wrong reasons.......2006-06-24
It's been a heck of a long time since I've bothered to write a review, but after finishing reading this book, I felt compelled to.
"Hollywood Interrupted" opens with chatroom correspondence between the two authors, who despite one of them being "liberal" and the other "conservative" they both find they have an apathy for celebs and their lifestyles. Conservative Breitbart and Liberal Ebner then have a classic bright-lightbulb-materializes-above-the-head moment! Why not WRITE A BOOK full of rehashed gossip, unfunny attempts at humor and stupid moralistic posturing but also rants about THEIR free speech being trampled on!
Throw in constant unfunny references to "the heterosexual Tom Cruise" (Sure, I make fun of TC, but I try to come up with new stuff, and though I disagree with his views on psychology, I don't HATE the guy.), an entire chapter dedicated to Courtney Love and her problems. Sure she's messed up, but Hole were a good band.
However, the chapter on Scientology is amusing. In fact, this book could have been a 13 page booklet consisting of that chapter alone. That said, you can't put the damn thing down- that is if you can stomach all the arrogance and mean spiritness of the writers. It could have been helped by a healthy leavening of satire, but Breitbart and Ebner appear to be too dim-minded and/or overcome by psychotic rage to be genuinely funny.
By all means read this book. It's not for everyone, but if you are one of those people fascinated by the gory scenes on websites such as rotten.com and the like (and I'm one of them) you may find this worth a look. Although chances are you'll know most of the "news" here: Eddie Murphy and the tranny, Whitney Houston's "Crack Is Whack" schtick and of course the Arquettes, the Phoenixes and the Baldwins -though no Wayans'es- it could be that there's just too darn many of them, or the "authors" may just be racists as well as moralists and homophobes. As the title song in Herschell Gordon Lewis's "2000 Maniacs" (and the remake "2001 Maniacs") goes: "The South's gonna rise again! Yee haw!". I give it an extra star for the sheer sleaziness of it all. If two morons can keep me glued to my chair and entertained for a couple of days, then it can't be all that "bad".(And no, I am not talking about me sitting and amusing myself with a couple of hand puppets). Bad is a relative term.
My next review due sometime in 2007. Those of you with no lives mark it off on your calendars. :-)
My True Confession.......2006-02-25
I'm embarrassed to confess this, but I actually bought this book by way of co-author Mark Ebner's urging in an AOL authors chat room. He shamelessly directed me to his blog, http://www.hollywoodinterrupted.com, and I click-through purchased the paperback here on Amazon. I then read Hollywood, Interrupted in one sitting, and now I feel less embarrassed being comforted by the fact that the book begins and ends with silly instant message sessions conducted by the authors.
In between their late night online chats, the authors composed an uncompromising pastiche of passages (How's that for alliteration?)devoted to exposing the town that they clearly love to hate. The result? I loved it!
Then I went back to Ebner's blog and discovered why this guy seems so desperately egotistical about getting noticed. His journalism rocks!
So, Ebner... Now that I've read and reviewed your work, you are forgiven for being such a shameless self-promoter.
Don't waste your time or money!!!!!.......2006-01-14
I checked this out of the library & only read about 1/3 of it. That's about all i could take of this mean-spirited, one-sided, repetitive diatribe.
Please read the Pub Weekly review above. It gives a fair picture of this crappy book.
I have no problem w/ criticism of hollywood & celebrity, as long as it's fair & intelligent criticism. This book is neither. It's just a biased, unoriginal rant.
The worst thing i can say about it is that the tone is that of a smug, intolerant, finger-wagging, self-righteous hypocrite of the worst kind. Of course the authors, while condemning these celebrities, have no problem making money off of them (& their misfortunes). These guys are the worst kind of blood-sucking insects.
If you're really curious, leaf through it at the library & then put it back. Please don't give these narrow-minded idiots your hard-earned money.

Book Description
During a long and distinguished career in photojournalism, Tom Stoddart has documented many of the world's most incredible events, including the scourge of famine and AIDS in Africa, the strife of civil war in the Balkans, and the monumental destruction of a superpower in Iraq. His powerful, humanistic, black-and-white photographs have won him many awards and the international respect of his peers. iWITNESS is as much a celebration of Stoddart's exceptional career as a photojournalist as it is a merciless diatribe on the day-to-day business of how the world conducts itself. This is an intensely personal view by an observer who refuses to believe that human beings can only exist in conflict with one another and the environment they inhabit. An exhibition of this work will be mounted in London in the summer of 2004 and will then travel worldwide.
Customer Reviews:
An outstanding book - buy it!!.......2004-10-11
This is an outstanding documentation of humanitarian crises by one of the world's best photojournalists. Stoddart's photos are truly moving - yet never sensational. Rather they reveal to us the quiet dignity of the human spirit in some of the most atrocious situations possible, famine, floods, ethnic cleansing, war, earthquakes etc. In all of his pictures it is the human spirit which shines through. It's impossible to look at these pictures passively, and difficult at times not to be moved to tears.
This book is a call for us to heighten our awareness of what's happening in the world today, away from cosy armchairs and the madness of, and obsession with 'celebrity culture', to shake off our 'compassion fatigue' and take action while we still have some consciousness to prevent and alleviate such suffering. How can we live in the same world as these pictures and not want to do something to improve our common human journey?
Buy it as soon as you can, and share it!

Book Description
A unique portrait of an extraordinary and beautiful land, now in paperback.
Drenched in sun, pounded by heat, Africa is a continent like no other. Within it are deserts of rolling sands, tropical jungles, savannas with exotic wild beasts, and coasts teeming with fish. Africa is home to more people, cultures and languages than any other place on the planet. It is indeed one of earth’s jewels.
Bob Geldof first visited Africa in 1984 and was touched to the heart by the deplorable living conditions on that continent. That same year he initiated Band Aid, a record whose sole proceeds went to help victims of famine in Africa. The following year, he organized the first Live Aid concert, which raised $180,000. Live Aid went on to inspire a whole generation to raise millions for the starving in Africa.
Over twenty years later, Geldof’s passion for what he calls the Luminous Continent remains undiminished. He travelled there once more and recorded his reflections in a personal diary. This is his diary, unflinchingly honest and illustrated with over 350 of his own magnificent photographs.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful and Original prospective on Africa..........2005-07-18
I am a Geldof fan, however, I didn't let this prejudice my review of this amazing book. From the beginning I felt like I could not put the book down! It has amazing pictures and the many stories of tribesmen was uniquely written.
I think if you know anything about Africa and its people - or do not know a thing - you will find this book amusing, sad, and unique in its story of a continent that has abundant physical beauty and, sadly, also has tragedy as part of its history. Very interesting view of modern Africa and some of its people, told by a incredibly interesting individual who has does more for powerty in the past 20 years than some countries have done to date.
Well worth reading!

Banana Republication.......2003-06-12
It's severly dated by today's standards, but what an excellent read, all the same. I look at it as the music industry version of Julia Phillips "You'll Never Eat Lunch In This Town Again". Biting with sardonic wit, lots of muck-raking (most of it spot-on), and just a wee bit 'o' honesty.
How much of it is true, we'll never know. But the essential bits (the inception of the Boomtown Rats, their immersion into the music scene, other bands, Live Aid, etc.) are required reading for anybody who gives a damn about the music industry. There's loads of comedy as well as pathos, as well as some of the greatest quotes I've ever read in an autobiography.
If you can still find a copy, it's well worth owning.
Is that it?.......2003-03-25
A wonderfully crafted autobiography. Honest and personal, Geldof puts the first half of his life under the microscope and you grow to love him for his warts and scars.
A riveting book especially for those who recall the music of his era. You will laugh and you may cry even if it is only because the book ends years short of the present day.
best autobiography i've ever read.......2000-04-11
Bob Geldof's book is a stunning odyssey into the mind of a rock star. he also happens to be a philanthropist who can teach a thing or two to the best of them. the man behind `live aid' not only collected hundreds of millions out of a telethon for africa's famine victims, but made sure they reached the right hands. his forthright language and no-holds-barred style are refreshing. if you must read an autobiography of a rock star, read this one.
Excellent and Inspiring.......1999-08-15
This book is one of those books that will renew your faith in the ability of normal people to change the world for the better. It is also hilarious and a great read!
great book.......1999-03-29
I don't usually read biographies books but this one is a very good one
