American Library Journal.......2002-03-03
From the Library Journal, Vol. 126, No. 8, p. 117, 1 May 2001:
These guides do not lead tourists to the most popular bars or shopping districts but instead to the various Christian heritage sites in each country ... Each guide follows the same layout: Hexham begins with an overview of the history of each country from prehistoric times to the present. He then includes a chapter on literature, art, and architecture and lists what he considers the top ten Christian heritage sites in each country. Each entry thereafter is in alphabetical order ... Recommended for all public libraries.

Customer Reviews:
All you ever wanted to know about retirement!.......2007-09-14
I have been looking at a lot of books recently in preparation for retirement, but none has been so comprehensive and well-written or answered so many of my questions (even questions I never thought about) as this one. I especially liked the "report cards" on retirement locations and the way the financial parts are written in such an understandable way. The book really helped me think about all aspects of retirement, including what I will do during retirement. And it addresses all sorts of retiring people, including single/divorced/widowed individuals, which is just what I needed. I now realize that finding a place to retire to is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to retirement planning. After reading this book, I feel much more confident that I can devise a good plan that will guide me for the rest of my life.
Even Better!.......2007-08-17
I purchased the first edition of this book when it came out in 2004, and was delighted to see that a new edition has been published. The book is completely updated and revised, and has all the information about health, relocation, working in retirement, finances, leisure time activities, finding a second career, travel, worksheets, and questionnaires. It really is the "Ultimate Guide to the Rest of Your Life," and by far the best retirement book out there.

More from Magnolia Torey's second book, adds to her already impressive recipe roster 75 formulas that range from Pear Streusel Breakfast Buns, and Pumpkin Walnut Cookies with Brown Butter Frosting, to Chocolate Pecan Pudding Pie, and Old-Fashioned Chocolate Chip Ice Cream. Included also are recipes for signature specialties like Magnolia's Chocolate Cupcakes and famous banana pudding, plus a section on frostings and sauces. All are easy to do, even for beginning bakers, and all have the straightforward Magnolia appeal. --Arthur Boehm

Customer Reviews:
great cupcake recipe and icing.......2007-03-28
i made abt 4 recipes before posting - vanilla cupcake, chocolate cupcake, strawberry shortcake, black bottom cupcake, apple cake with butterscotch frosting and vanilla icing/buttercream. great blackbottomed and vanilla cupcake recipe. very good icing recipe. the choc cupcake was dry and tasteless -- rather do the blackbottomed cupcake recipe without cream cheese as choc cupcake. very very basic cake recipes - heavy cakes with no sophisticated tastes. all the cakes rose very well but they were all flour-heavy and came out really heavy. they hold their shape well. i recommend the "cake bible" by rose for cakes instead. the strawberry shortcake in this book called for a 3 layered cake with whipped cream, if served a few hours before eating, the whipped cream does not hold up well. "the cabke bible" will take situations like these under advisement, which i have always appreciated.
very good for beginner bakers, very encouraging results. wonderfully written. it provides me with new ideas on baking :) but for more sophisticated tastes/scents/texture, go for an advanced book. :) the only reason i gave it 3 stars is because the recipes were a bit overly simplistic for my tastes. it is a good book for a quick bake (at nights for tomorrow's events), instead of a nice cake taking a few days to assemble.
Disappointed.......2007-03-09
Based on the reputation of this bakery, I purchased the book. I made 2 recipes from this book so far and have been very disappointed. Looks like this one will gather dust on the shelf.
The Best Buy!.......2007-03-09
This is one of the simplest recipe books that I have ever purchased...AND OFCOURSE THE BEST! I have made several things from it and they have turned out delicious every single time. It is one of my best investments in a cupcake recipe book!
Suggestion..........2007-02-06
I've found that the reviews for this (and other) magnolia books seem to be very polarized. Professional cooks with years of experience getting terrible results and novice bakers getting fabulous results? If you're trying to decide like I was try making the cupcakes before buying the book. The vanilla cupcake recipe can be found on martha stewart's website, just search for magnolia. For me it turned out great, not quite as good as the bakery itself, but as close as I can expect from my junky oven. If you make them and like them, buy the book. If you make them and think they're terrible maybe the book is not for you...
More from Magnolia.......2007-01-23
This is a great cookbook....Everything I've made in this book has been a success .....Everyone needs this cookbook for any deserts they might make...You can't go wrong with it......

Book Description
The opening chapter of this book tells of a boy who lost his father at the age of two and went with his mother and seven siblings to live with their maternal grandparents in Southwest Louisiana. Confronted with a huge increase in the size of his family, the boy's grandfather established a dairy farm, called Magnolia Dairy, and put his grandkids to work earning their keep while attending the nearby consolidated school. The author portrays this life as contributing to his own internal discipline as well as sustaining the family through the Great Depression. A second chapter chronicles the family's antecedents from Revolutionary America to the present. As the boy reaches adulthood World War II looms. He joins the Air Corps and trains for work as a radio and control tower operator. After Pearl Harbor and a failed attempt to become an Air Force pilot he rejoins his radio squadron and is eventually sent to China. His wartime experience with new and different cultures abroad inspires him further his education at LSU and Yale and prepare himself for a diplomatic career, a story that he has told in A Farm Boy in the Foreign Service, 1st Books Library, 2003.
Customer Reviews:
Well "Beyond Magnolias".......2005-01-01
I've just finished this book, and find myself very impressed. Mr. Kendall's writing skills make the narrative flow nicely; the details he provides -- of people, places, the sequence of events, and how all that related to the larger picture -- constantly amazed and delighted this reader. His forthright and honest candor in relating personal experiences (including youthful romances) enhances the sense of realism most effectively. Readers who will identify with much of this charming story include anyone who comes from a rural setting or a large family, remembers the World War II years, knows about determination to pursue higher education via the GI Bill, worked in journalism and/or the foreign service. His insights into the cultural values of China, from both his colorful wartime Army duty and subsequent experiences in that part of the world, are particularly rewarding. It's a book worth reading twice.

Siblings Without Rivalry: How to Help Your Children Live Together So You Can Live Too
ASIN: 1932653368 |
Book Description
WHAT could possibly make a beautiful magnolia tree so upset in the springtime of her life? Perhaps the arrival of another (a brother) tree who comes to stay beside her and steals all of the attention...
Another Tree in the Yard is the story of sibling resentment and eventual love, uniquely told through two trees in a yard. "Maggie", a beloved magnolia tree, stands in the center of the Soto family's life. They enjoy having her so much that they decide to get another tree: "Figaro". So begins the jealousy that is common when a new baby comes into a household. At the same time that the trees are getting used to each other, there is a subtle parallel situation taking place inside the Soto home.
After some time and trouble, the trees (and the Soto children) become the best of friends and can't imagine life without the other. Join them in their journey of acceptance and see how it is as they adjust.
This sensitive but humorous book is for anyone who has ever felt overshadowed by all the attention given to a new brother or sister - AND for those newcomers, too.
Customer Reviews:
A perfect allegory for overcoming sibling rivalry .......2005-05-08
Enhanced with 34 memorable watercolor illustrations by John Iorio, Another Tree In The Yard by Lucia Sera is about the Soto family's decision to add a fig tree to their yard to accompany the beautiful Magnolia tree that is already there. But there arises sibling jealous between the two trees. Eventually they both come to be the best of friends, overcoming the differences and growing to truly appreciate each other. Another Tree In The Yard is a perfect allegory for overcoming sibling rivalry when a new baby comes into the family household and is especially recommended as a picturebook for young children having to deal with changes in their family's makeup.
A wonderful story for growing families. 5 + Stars.......2005-01-12
My 4 year old and I both loved the story. The illustrations were wonderful. Lucia Sera is a bright new star in the world of children's books!!
A Tree is Born.......2004-11-17
Siblings Lucia Sera and illustrator John Iorio have written a deeply satisfying story that resonates on many levels: It's a parable about accepting a brother or sister into the family, but it also examines growth, change, and adaptation. The book is as entertaining as it is intelligent, neither simplifying nor mystifying a complex emotional issue. Moreover, the tone is just right: Instead of a preachy or saccharin approach, the story is suffused with a genuine warmth.
The book opens with the Soto family planting a magnolia tree, dubbed "Maggie" by their only child, Julia. The beautifully colored tree provides shade, indoor flowers, and a place to just hang out. The family and the neighbors love Maggie. In fact, the Sotos love the tree so much that they decide to add a fig tree (in one of several humorous grace notes, they name it "Figaro"). In a parallel story, Mrs. Soto is expecting the son who will be Julia's first sibling. Maggie begins to voice the concerns that Julia might be having: "The magnolia...had mixed feelings. `Nobody asked me if I wanted another tree...'" When Figaro is planted, Maggie feels forgotten and trampled upon (literally). Maggie resents the newcomer, "When's he going back to where he came from, I wonder. Things were better before..."
Over time, Maggie resolves her anger as she tries out the new roles of protector and provider. Yet, she doesn't sacrifice her own identity, and neither does Julia with her new brother, Felix. Over time, Maggie learns to truly enjoy Figaro. As illustrated in soft watercolors by Iorio, Maggie is amused at Figaro's knotted muscles, fading yellow leaves, and luscious purple figs. As Julia and Felix grow up (Sera and Ioria easily communicate the passage of time), Maggie and Figaro have become the best of friends, and Maggie sees how Figaro "made all the good times better," and that "it's a wonderful thing to have a brother tree in the yard."
This exceptionally wise book pursues difficult issues through the trees' perspective: The relationship between Julia and Felix is implied only. This approach may encourage your child to feel more comfortable talking about his or her "negative" feelings. The book is very attractive, with lots of white space around both the text and the soft, welcoming pictures. Publisher Vocalis printed this on that wonderfully thick, smooth and glossy paper that only kids' books seem to have. "Another Tree in the Yard" is directly concerned with the potential problems of a new brother or sister, but it really covers the challenges and rewards that accompany any change. It's one of the best new books for families this year.

STREETCAR tells the story of how the author, now deceased, came to "land" this powerful role alongside Marlon Brando in this landmark production, directed by Elia Kazan, of Tennesee Williams' brilliant play, I RODE A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE.
Customer Reviews:
I Rode A Streetcar Named Desire.......2000-06-19
This wonderful slice of life transported me to 1940s New York as seen through the eyes of a new and ferociously talented young actor. It tells the story of Rudy Bond, one of the original players in Tennessee Williams' hit Streetcar Named Desire, at the threshhold of fame as he gets his first role on Broadway. Bond cleverly weaves enough of his past with the tension of a new play opening to give the reader a very true sense of both the New York that was and the Bond that was. In addition, his down-to-earth interaction with the rest of the cast -- Marlon Brando, Jessica Tandy, Karl Mauldin, and Kim Hunter among them -- gives a very real sense of them as people. Bond's in-the-moment perceptions take the reader right back to those moments. A really fun ride!
Fascinating story of an actor's life in 1940's NYC.......2000-05-25
Hard to put down story of a highly talented actor struggling to find work in NYC in the 1940's. This fascinating and at times heartbreaking memoir gives a rare behind the scenes view of the overwhelmingly difficult life actors have trying to succeed in this profession. We are treated to what it was like studying and working with some of the greatest actors, directors and producers in the history of stage. A must read for anyone even remotely interested in theatre, film, or even movie stars. Couldn't put it down! Bravo Mr. Bond, may you (posthumously)like so many other struggling, talented actors, finally get the recognition that is long overdue.
