Book Description
Eight years ago, Dr. Thomas J. Stanley swept aside the mythical magic curtain of wealth to reveal The Millionaire Next Door. America found out just who and how common the truly wealthy were in this country¿and we learned the characteristics and habits that made them so. Now the author of the follow-up The Millionaire Mind focuses on one of the least understood but increasingly rich demographics: Millionaire Women Next Door.¿Why write another book that profiles millionaires?¿ Stanley asks. ¿The vast majority of the millionaire respondents (92 percent) in The Millionaire Next Door were men. . . . I felt that it was indeed time for successful businesswomen of the self-made variety to be heard.¿ And heard they are in this book that is destined to become every bit as informative, quoted, and inspirational as the author¿s earlier works. Readers everywhere will be fascinated by Stanley¿s thoroughly researched findings and conclusions. More than a simple extension of his studies of male millionaires, Millionaire Women Next Door presents groundbreaking concepts involving the nature, lifestyle, and business choices of successful American women that reach far beyond the scope of the author¿s previous studies. The book examines the choice of businesses elected by self-employed women, ranking over 150 categories in terms of their profitability and probability of success. It also describes the women¿s background, highlighting the fact that most millionaire women were raised in nurturing family environments that were literally training grounds for success, instilling the values that make this group one of the most generous in American society as demonstrated by its level of giving to charities, family, and friends. While many characteristics such as frugality and simplicity of lifestyle are similar to those of their male counterparts, Stanley demonstrates that most millionaire women work harder and do better¿at school, in business, and in investment practices. Millionaire Women is sure to be one of the most read, reviewed, and discussed books to come out this year. Make your own wise investment for a wealth of solid sales.

Role-Models for Would-Be Millionaires.......2007-08-09
Question: What's the one thing a woman can do for herself if she wants to be a successful businesswoman or a millionaiare?
Answer: Find a role-model, and emulate the things she does.
Thanks to Thomas Stanley, women don't have to network to find the mentor they need. They'll be able to find her right in the pages of this book.
With abundant statistics and case profiles, Stanley presents us with successful women from varied backgrounds, and shows us exactly how they did it.
The book is rich with details, and focuses on the "5-W's" (of good journalism):
WHO these women are.
WHAT they do and how they decided to do it.
WHEN they made the decisions that propelled them to success.
WHERE they live and work, and come from.
WHY they are so successful.
Recommended reference to keep in your "how to succeed" library.
Not Quite Stanley's Best, But Well Worth A Read, Nonetheless.......2007-05-20
I just finished reading this book after picking it up at a bookstore about five days ago. I read from it every chance I got, and though on the one hand, I have to agree with those readers who pointed out that the book was tough going at times, on the other hand, I also have to agree with other readers who had very good things to say about the book, as the favorable reviews are well deserved. First I will cite the bad about the book, and then I will cite the good.
First the bad. The book appears to rely heavily upon convenience sampling and voluntary response. The author seems to have shared mostly only those stories sent to him, or more plainly, that just fell into his lap. Second, like his two other millionaire books, the author uses the book as a platform to share with us the things he values, and appears only to look for that information or evidence which supports his values, never once addressing information that contradicts his position. Third, in keeping with the standard paradigm of women = victim and male = (opportunistic) victimizer, (which always plays well to the target demographic of the book), the author's attempt to make out this group of women as selfless, do-gooding heroines was a bit overdone. The millionaire women are seen as generous and charitable as a group, and the millionaire men are portrayed as heartless misers who penny-pinch at every turn. I felt especially incensed when Stanley went out of his way to make excuses for some millionaire womens' poor choices in mates- the so-called 'Marginal Bobs' (the book titled, Smart Women, Stupid Choices, comes readily to mind for some peculiar reason). By association, if some of the men made poor choices in terms of mates, would they too be given sympathy and generous excuses, or are we to believe that they deserve what they get?
And now the good. Aside from the obvious attempts to play to the book's target audience (middle class, educated wage-earning women) and attempts bordering on the egregious to trumpet the merits of personal financial planners of various stripes, the book did have quite a few good points about it. We learn that if we divide the millionaire women into two groups, those that give the most to charitable causes tend to have lower annual earned incomes and higher net worth. These women tend to give just for the joy of giving, and seek to make the world they live in a better place. Many people took issue with the inclusion of a chapter about a dyslexic man who did good; however, I think the point of the chapter was to show that even those with identifiable disabilities can become millionaires, be they male or female, so long as they play to their strengths, live below their means, save and invest, avoid a lifestyle centered around consumption, and most of all, have a source of thoughtful, intelligent mentoring available to them. Readers that read the book carefully will glean some powerful information from this book, such as the following: 1) you can not change the past, but you have considerable control over your future, 2) those who are professional, service-oriented and customer-focused will always beat the competition, 3) it pays to play to your native strengths, 4) great investors are not born, they are made through trial and error, so go ahead and make a few mistakes, and 5) most important, limit borrowing only to those things that generate a realizable (net) income- a lesson all of those would-be real estate moguls and Robert Kiyosaki mimics would do very, very well to keep in mind.
In passing, I did not think that it was appropriate for Stanley to profile two college professors in his chapter on wealthy educators, simply because in order to become a college professor, one has to spend, at last count, a minimum of at least seven years beyond the Bachelor's degree to receive a doctorate. These days, most places won't allow you to teach on the faculty without a PhD, and more than a few people on faculties do not get tenure. In my mind, it would have been better for him to profile a wealthy elementary or high school teacher, as this is a goal that is more attainable for most readers. Still, I got a good kick out of his story of the matronly professor who touched the lives of so many deserving students.
In sum, I found the book to be a very worthwhile read. Though many would dismiss the book's more important contents as common sense, it is hard to believe that many people still don't get it. Readers should keep in mind that it all comes down to the choices we make, and take special care not to equate one's net worth with one's self worth, a trap too many Stanley devotees tend to fall into. I still contend that ongoing investments in one's health and continuing education will lead to satisfying increases in one's wealth.
Very Interesting Book.......2006-12-31
When I read The Millionaire Next Door, I was intrigued. However, I was left yearning for similar information regarding women. Well, I found it in this book. It was very interesting to read statistical information about successful women.
If you've got the Money, Honey---I got the Time........2006-11-12
Or, "How I learned to LOVE pinching pennies & clipping coupons!"
Now there's a title to stir the very hottest of boiler-fires in this coldest of Bounders, oh yes: "Millionaire Women Next Door"! Yummy! The title conjures up visions of 90-something tottering dowagers, having crumb-cake brought to them on silver platters by decrepit butlers, toddling about the mahogany-panelled passages of O Altitudo, shepherded by manservants and maids from Library to Sunroom to Palatial Dining Hall to the Rolls-Royce (gassed-up & ready to rumble by the handy valet) for the Sunday drive in the country.
Think of it: a ninety-something bat with the ferocious desire to rut like a crazed Gambian Howler Monkey, a creature with a very weak ticker, a short life-span, millions of dividend-paying bluechips and tax-free muni bonds piled up in her hoard, and me---first in line in her will!
Or even a chummier prospect: the Millionaire Woman Next Door who primped, nipped, tucked, & aerobicycled her way to bodily perfection, all of 35, hooked up with some venerable drooling Texas Oil Tycoon-Geezer, waited for him to drop, and now is positively rolling in the Shekkels and ready to party!
Alas, those fragrant, lustrous visions are for another writer and another book: this is a Thomas Stanley tome, Stanley being the scholarly fellow who pulled back the frayed shower-curtain on America's eremite wealthy only to reveal that mysterious class wasn't comprised of Robber Barons pulling their 500-foot nuclear powered megayachts into Mediterranean Ports, oh nosirree: they were plain folk, Good Reader, just like you and me!
Only they saved, live frugal lives, clipped coupons, ate catfood from a tin, scrounged, skimped, pinched the pennies until the Little Coppery Abrahams screamed in pain, maybe even splurged every 3 months on a 1-course meal at Mickey D's for the entire clan!
And, of course, according to Stanley and his prodigious stack of statistical data that suggest---no, confirm---that the meet may not inherit the Earth, no sirree, but the skinflints sure as Hell will---they'll die loaded.
I'm not going to parse or quibble with Stanley's research: coming myself from degenerate, somewhat deranged Southern stock, I've seen, firsthand, accounts of miserliness, weal, and grasping avarice that would chill the blood.
I have an Aunt who would hook up with her (loaded) buddy, and the two biddies would have Thanksgiving Dinner at the local homeless shelter. Hey, it was a cheap meal, no doubt.
But is that any way to live? Is it worth it to you, to spend your fleeting hours scrimping and scrounging, fretting over every penny, so you can die loaded? And so, once you give up this mortal coil and your wizened soul speeds Valhalla-ward, your spoiled, nasty little nephew, the only creature left alive mentioned in your will, inherits all your booty, and proceeds to blow the entire stack on a civilian super-submarine---I mean, what's the point?
I was hoping with "Millionaire Women" Stanley would let his hair down, get all "Shaft" with us, maybe talk a little bit about Divorce, the single greatest gender-to-gender (ie, poor hapless dudes to merciless chicks) wealth transfer ever invented in the history of the world. The Big D, an easy con to pull off, and pulled off every day: Woman sinks her claws & pinions, parasite-like, into a Hapless Man, catapults out a few nasty brats so he's bound to her for Eternity, then Lawyers up and pirates his loot. Works like a charm.
But no such luck: we're spoiled even that much of a Dickensian romp.
So if you insist on looking here, know this: Stanley's 'blockbuster' first book, "The Millionaire Next Door", was all about America's truly wealthy: Stingy Dudes.
To cut to the chase, "Millionaire Women" is the same disc, spinning backwards, without even a few Satanic Verses---to wit: Stingy Chicks.
Unless you're looking for a real blue-light special, avoid.

Statistics for women.......2006-07-31
I thought this book was a great read, based on the power of the statistics alone. Lots of great information about profitable women- owned businesses, as well as hearing the stories from the women who made it themselves.

Big Disappointment.......2007-02-16
This book had the potential to be a trailblazer, but was vague and lacked substance. It even fell short of being motivational, which is what seemed to be the intent of the author. Perhaps Mr. Stanley should stick to writing about millionaire men, because he doesn't capture the spirit of "the millionaire women." A better read is Barbara Stanny's "Prince Charming Isn't Coming," or "Secrets of Six Figure Income Women" which I found informative and motivational. Mr. Stanley give me something I can use...or at least feel.
Millionaire women next door.......2006-06-29
I really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed reading about women who are millionaires and how they spend their money. It is good to know that becoming a millionaire is possible for all women in all walks of life no matter what the circumstances. I gave this book to my daughter to use as a reference point.

The King in Love: Edwards Vll's Mistresses : Lillie, Langtry, Daisy Warwick, Alice Keppel and Others
ASIN: 1886571007 |
Book Description
She was acknowledged as the most beautiful woman in the world but she wanted more than accolades from artists and photographers. She soon became the mistress of Edward Albert, prince of Wales adn future king of England, then turned her talents to acting, her ultimate triumph. At first people came to see her out of curiosity, but she quickly won them over with her beauty, charm and personality if not her acting talent. During her more than 30 years of performing in the United States, Lillie Langtry came into contact with numerous men and women who are now legends. Author Donna Lee Harper novelizes Lillie's meetings with these fascinating people in a most unique way in one of the year's most entertaining books.
Customer Reviews:
Great Surprise.......2002-03-08
I was greatly surprised at the approach Ms. Harper took with this book. Lillie has been written about for a very long time and her own biography has been of great enjoyment. The lady traveled extensively which gives credence to the stories in this book, put together in a novel form by Ms. Harper. Lillie did in fact meet the likes of Bat Masterson, the Moon sisters et al. Harper has taken archival files and pieced together the lady's life well. Her attempt at purchasing a huge piece of property outside of Middletown, CA was a flash in the pan, compared to recent stories and Harper puts it together honestly.
Yes, the book is about women and Lillie is the linkpin. It's worth the read and very much worth keeping on your shelf.
Not Really a book about Lillie.......2000-07-14
This is not really a 'diary' of lillie Langtry. Lillie's life (and her real-life acting tours across the USA) is used as a literary conceit to put together a series of biographies of contempoaray 'famous' american women.
A lot of these women had quite significant achievements in their lifetime, but I had never heard of them before.
While I found their lives interesting I was dissapointed to see how little the author developed Lillie's Life story. Beware of the 'other rememberances' in this book's title, because they, not lillie, take up the bulk of the book.
Buy this if you are interested in a series of biographies on dis-seperate, but ground breaking women - don't buy it if you want an interesting book on Lillie Langtry, because in the end it's not really about her, despite the title.
The Diary Of Lillie Langtry and other Remembrances.......2000-02-26
Reads like an exciting anthology of short stories. Ms. Langtry shines as a real heroine of her time. And all the traveling she did on horseback, carriage and boat must have consumed her spare time. Very much worth the read.

Book Description
Molly Hughes's account of her life in Victorian London has become a classic of autobiographical writing. Now A London Child of the 1870s, A London Girl of the 1880s, and A London Home of the 1890s are available for the first time in a single paperback volume. As witty and charming as on publication, this perceptive trilogy traces her early life from schooldays to motherhood, and shows that `Victorian children did not have such a dull time as is usually supposed',
Customer Reviews:
Thirty facinating years.......2005-09-05
Mary Hughes (born Mary Thomas) published these books (originally a trilogy) in the 1930's, reminiscing about her childhood, early adulthood, and early married life. The books are remarkable: detailed, thoughtful, poignant when tragedy intrudes, but never sentimental; sharp, witty, affectionate and truly insightful.
Hughes's family was middle class, so that being poor, for her, meant being barely able to afford to go to school, rather than work. They usually had servants, though only one or two. All four older boys are intelligent, interesting people, though Mary claims only one of them as "clever". Yet it's clear from the first volume that they were all lovers of literature, art, and intelligent conversation, and as Mary grew up the youngest in such a household she not unnaturally grew to love the same things, despite lacking a formal education until she was eleven.
Her stories span all of life, from schooldays and children's games in the first book, to married life and heartbreaking tragedy in the last. She visits America to attend an educational conference at the Chicago World's fair in the early 1890's; and sees Washington, Montreal and Boston, too. She visits Cornwall and Wales, and of course there are many, many stories of London and London life. There is an enormous amount of detail here, loving told and a delight to read. This is the best kind of history to read -- true and faithful to the facts but more interesting than almost any novel could be.
Strongly recommended. If you're hesitating, I recommend at least the first volume, which you can buy separately here on Amazon; though I feel sure you'll want the other two when you've read that one.
Wise and witty memoirs of middle-class Victorian life.......1999-11-17
A refreshingly lively look at middle-class life in Victorian London. Particularly good on education and travel. Out to be reprinted!

Book Description
Brands are everywhere: in the air, on the high-street, in the kitchen, on television and, maybe even on your feet. But what kinds of things are they?
The brand, that point of connection between company and consumer, has become one of the key cultural forces of our time and one of the most important vehicles of globalization. This book offers a detailed and innovative analysis of the brand
Illustrated with many examples, the book argues that brands:
* mediate the supply and demand of products and services in a global economy
* frame the activities of the market by functioning as an interface
* communicate interactively, selectively promoting and inhibiting communication between producers and consumers
* operate as a public currency while being legally protected as private property in law
* introduce sensation, qualities and affect into the quantitative calculations of the market
* organize the logics of global flows of products, people, images and events.
This book will be essential reading for students of sociology, cultural studies and consumption.

The 529 College Savings Plan Made Simple
ASIN: 0974297755 |
Book Description
College savings plans, 529 Plans, Qualified state tuition programs, QSTPs, Prepaid tuition contracts, Educational savings accounts. They go by many names, but they all represent the same thing: a REVOLUTION in the way families with children are investing for the future.
What other type of program allows you to invest over $100,000 in a professionally-managed tax-deferred account for each child without regard to age or income level? Where else does your state offer significant benefits for investing, including tax deductions, income exemption, and even scholarship money. What other mechanism allows estates by hundreds of thousands of dollars without gift tax, and without giving up control of the assets?
The answer is that no other IRS-approved program provides the combination of benefits that a Section 529 state-sponsored college savings plan does. Investing for future college expenses will never be the same again. And forget what you may have heard about these plans. You are not limited to the plan in your own state, and you do not have to send your child to an in-state college. You can even set up an account for yourself!
In THE BEST WAY TO SAVE FOR COLLEGE - A Complete Guide to Section 529 Plans, Joseph F. Hurley, CPA describes how 529 Plans work: the tax rules, planning strategies, impact on college financial aid. He compares them to other alternatives such as the Education IRA, savings bonds, and mutual funds. And he describes each state's plan, including its best and worst features. The various state plans are not created equal. Learn which ones to use and which ones to stay away from.
You've heard about them. Now it's time to learn about them. Whether you are a professional planner, a college financial aid officer, or a careful investor, you need to have all the facts.

Very Useful Book.......2001-09-02
No doubt, a very useful guide to methods of financing a college education. Also check out "WEST POINT", by Norman Thomas Remick, which clues you in about West Point, the college at which everyone is there on full scholarship paid by the government.
The best book ever written about saving for college!.......1999-11-18
This book unlocks the secrets of saving for college like the 401k plan did for saving for retirement. A real must for all families to understand. Makes a great present.
A fantastic summary of 529 plans.......1999-07-08
This book should be read by anyone planning to send a child to college. After reading this book, I started college savings accounts for my daughterin New York and New Hampshire. This is definitely the "sleeper" tax break which everyone should know about. Forget the pitiful Education IRA. The 529 plans are where it's at!!
Terrific guide to a new way to save for college........1999-06-05
Highly recommended. This is the first comprehensive analysis that I've seen of an extremely important and relatively new way to save on a tax-deferred basis for your children's or grandchildren's college expenses. It's well-written, comprehensive, and objective, and it gave me enough data to make an informed decision. Before I opened the book, I had researched New York's plan through another source; I was delighted to see the discussion in this book present all of the plan's features (pro and con) that I had discovered--and more.
I haven't met the author (Joseph Hurley). But when I e-mailed a question to him at the address published in the book, I received a thorough and helpful answer later the same day. That's great service from the author of an exceptionally valuable guide.

A Great Book.......2006-08-08
This is a great book. You will learn alot about the power of money and the power of your thoughts regarding money. You will never think of money the same way after reading this book. Highly recommended. A Must Read.
Oy! What A Treasure.......2006-01-21
I love this book. I have had it for years and it has been a source of wisdom and inspiration. I highly recommend this little gem.
Really liked it.........2005-05-14
This is a book that you can read and re-read to make sure that its principles remain grounded within you. I found many of the Rabbi's writings on expending other people's time..speaking of others in disheartening ways..and the value of money and promise to be great reminders of what I should expect from others and what I should be expending myself. It's a great consicous watch-dog for me and I've enjoyed the book immensely.
The Kabbalah of Money-- A Critical Review.......2005-03-30
The Kabbalah of Money is an essential book for anyone who's interested in increasing their personal wealth, improving the quality of life ("tikkun haOlom") or desires insight into the inner workings of successful living.
I've read and re-read this book multiple times since I bought in back in August, 2004. To say it is a business book "...Money" would indeed be a disservice to the reader and Rabbi Bonder. This book is about, first and foremost, understanding how one's behavior-- by thought, speech and action-- influences the environment for good or otherwise.
Let me also point out that it does address business issues, but it does so with ample does of Talmudic wisdom. And, to my pleasure, it is not overly heavyhanded in its scope.
The book does not teach the how to's of getting into business, but the ethical and spiritual aspects. So, for instance, if one is a fan of Mr. Donald "The Art of the Deal" Trump, it would behoove you to have a copy of this while you're watching The Apprentice. It's akin to The Power of Positive Thinking and/or Enthusiasm Makes the Difference by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, but with the obvious Jewish foundation.
I highly recommend this book, it is a gem and its rewards are hidden in its pages.
Time Management and Ethics in the Marketplace.......2000-05-26
In many ways THE KABBALAH OF MONEY is more about time management than it is about money. A theme that weaves its way through the book is that the optimal use of one's time is to devote it to study and learning - not just any studying, however, but the study of the Torah. In Jewish tradition, time is to be divided between study, work, and physiological needs (eating, sleeping, elimination, and leisure). All of our free time, once our work and physiological needs have been met should be devoted to study.
In this book, Rabbi Bonder brings together his knowledge of the working of the "marketplace" with Jewish ethical teachings, Talmudic Interpretations, teachings of the Hasidic Masters, Jewish Mysticism, and logical analysis. Here, marketplace is variously described as: a market of exchanges and interactions which represents "the infinite quantity of small and great businesses that take place in the universe at any given minute" and as a place where "each individual's fitness to survive is in accordance with his or her own perception of what survival is."
In keeping with the time theme, one of the problems to be faced has to do with devoting one's time to amassing wealth. In other words, how much is too much? Time that is spent with the objective of accumulating wealth (beyond that which meets our own needs and is beneficial to others) represents a two pronged loss. First of all, the creation of this type of wealth creates an offsetting scarcity. Secondly it involves wasting time that could, and should, be better spent in study. In contemporary terms, the accumulation of excess wealth is not ecologically sound.
Another area of discussion is the relationship of God to the marketplace. Rabbi Bonder states that "when a person prays only for material gains his pleas and efforts are wasted. This is because a curtain is brought down between himself and God as a result of material things having been brought into the domain of the spirit.
This book has had an impact on the way I conduct my life. Before reading it, my standard reaction to anyone asking for a handout was a knee-jerk reaction that he'll probably just use it to get drunk. After reading Bonder's section on dealing with beggars and how these dealings affect the marketplace, I came to 2 realizations:
1. So what if he does use it for drink. He probably needs the drink more than I need the dollar.
and
2. Who am I to judge anyway.
I highly recommend this book. In spite of its brevity it's not an easy read. I have barely touched the surface of a few of the concepts of what the dust jacket refers to as "a broad and ethical view of economic behavior including all forms of exchange and human interaction, from how we spend our money to how we fulfill our role as responsible human beings in a global ecological framework."

Book Description
Recent years have witnessed a significant upsurge of organized private, nonprofit activity in the countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America, and, with it, a new appreciation of the important role that nonprofit organizations can play in the processes of economic and political change. Long recognized as instruments of relief and promoters of human rights, such organizations have recently come to be viewed also as essential contributors to basic economic growth and to the broader civic infrastructure that is now increasingly seen as a fundamental precondition for markets and representative political institutions to function. Despite their increasing importance, however, nonprofit organizations in the developing world remain dimly understood, and there is a lack of both empirical and theoretical work. This volume presents detailed research of the nonprofit sector in Brazil, Ghana, Egypt, India and Thailand. The volume addresses a significant gap in the literature, and is a welcome addition to the Nonprofit Sector series.

****A Wonderful Book****.......2003-07-27
For anyone who hasn't read any books concering the Frank family, then I suggest you do so now. This was a moving tale about what Meip went through helping hide the two families. I would give this book a 10 out of 10!!! Many parts of this book were very sad, but others brought joy to my heart. I highly suggest you read this book.
Important book for all to read so as to never be repeated..........1999-05-12
This book was given as a gift when I was a small child and it made an impact on me even then. The impact was not fully realized until I went to the first concentration camp, Dachau and saw the situation that the prisoners lived with. It was then that I fully understood the risk that Miep took in helping the families in the attic. I believe that everyone should read one of the stories about the inhumanity that occured in this century and hopefully with the knowledge, keep it from happening again. Let us not let these peoples lives have been for nothing.
I WOULD GIVE IT A 25+........1998-03-04
I consider myself very fortunate to personally have Miep's book. Although I am still reading it, I find it very interesting and very informative. Being there herself, Miep personally knew what went on in the hiding place. Knowing what would happen if caught, everybody kept their heads up in faith.
