From OUTSIDE Magazine.......2001-11-22
"You haven't experienced the Caribbean until you know what an island tastes like, what it sounds like, what it smells like and how it feels--including its mud and thorns," writes M. Timothy O'Keefe in Caribbean Hiking, a new book detailing almost 400 hikes on 30 islands. Filled with regional maps, plus tips on gear and safety, this is the definitive guide for hot-weather adventurers interested in more than sunshine and beaches. (OUTSIDE Magazine, Dec. 2001, p. 124)

CARIBBEAN AFOOT, A Walking & Hiking Guide.......2000-04-03
An incredibly useful, readable guide based on the author's personal experience. It's subjective, but the author explains why he liked or disliked the particular trail (or island, or city, or historical site or whatever!) Includes length of the hike, level of difficulty, time estimates and even info on what type of shoes one should have (sandles okay, walking shoes, serious hiking boots, etc.) The author highlights points of interest along the way, tidbits of history, and additional information about the area. It focuses on the trails, but also points out good snorkeling nearby and beaches to avoid due to dangerous undertows, etc. An informative introductory section covers interesting cultural considerations, plants and bugs to avoid, historical information and useful overall suggestions. The hikes are actually organized by island, and are very easy to follow. The only thing that would add to the enjoyment of this book would be color photos, but that would also make the book more expensive and probably heavier to carry! It's definately a useful book for anyone hoping to explore nature trails in the Caribbean!

Book Description
A crucial resource for increasing response rates and obtaining high-quality feedback from mail, electronic, and other surveys
Don Dillman's Mail and Internet Surveys, Second Edition has been the definitive guide for creating and conducting successful surveys using both traditional and new media channels. Now, this special 2007 Update of the classic text features major additions covering the latest developments in online survey design and administration.
Like its predecessor, this resource lays out a complete, start-to-finish guide for determining the needs of a given survey, designing it, and effectively administering it. Drawing on social science, statistics, and proven best practices, Dillman's text discusses surveys for a variety of purposes, audiences, and situations.
New and updated material covers both the principles behind and directions for how to:
- Conduct Web surveys
- Visually design questionnaires
- Use paper mailed surveys
As insightful and practical as its classic original, Mail and Internet Surveys, Second Edition, 2007 Update is a crucial resource for any researcher seeking to increase response rates and obtain high-quality feedback from mail, electronic, and other self-administered surveys.
Customer Reviews:
Classic survey methods text.......2007-07-07
For anyone who conducts online surveys, especially academic researchers, this is an essential text. Dillman's text is far superior to The Survey Kit by Arlene Fink. The only criticism I would offer is that Dillman assumes researchers are designing their own online surveys rather than using commercially available websites such as Survey Monkey. I would contend that the majority of survey research is conducted on commercial websites. Although these websites are changing rapidly, I would like Dillman to address this subject as well.
Excellent Reference.......2007-06-20
Overall there appears to be some confusion over the purpose of the book, but if you are trying to improve responses and design of the actual instrument, this book is excellent. If you need help figuring out sampling and the such, you aren't ready for the book.
There are many people who do still use paper surveys and even mail them and given it's in the title, it's a bit surprising reviewers found this absurd.
Perhaps more absurd are the complaints relating to how unscientific the work is. Dillman has published a great deal in the scientific literature on how to improve the quality of the data through better visual design. That is not saying he does not understand the importance of sampling. It does indicate the book he is going to write is going to assume you have very basic understanding of survey methodology and you are looking to improve the usability of a survey with the assumption in mind.
Dillman's research provides excellent guidelines for creating visual surveys that are likely to improve the accuracy and reliability of the responses. If that's what you are looking for, it's the best book on the subject and is grounded in the literature.
If you need a book on sampling, come back to this book later.
great update.......2007-06-09
The 2007 version is a great update and had a lot of useful information for anyone conducting survey research. The update includes internet and mixed mode information that is relevant to the resources being used today.
A straight read with good illustrations of main points.
Best Survey Book Ever.......2007-05-14
Definitely a must have for anyone looking at conducting a thorough large-scale survey!
Great sourcebook but update was not complete.......2007-01-09
Overall a great book, but if an author is going to create a new edition, I think greater care is needed when updating sections. One small example is that the price of postage stamps (when discussing mail surveys) is still listed as 32 cents. Little things, but if I'm going to pay for an updated book, I expect all of the book to be updated to reflect the current state of affairs.

Customer Reviews:
AN EXECELLENT BOOK THAT KEEPS YOU UPDATED ON GUNS & AMMO.......2001-10-25
GUN DIGEST IS AN EXCELLENT PUBLICATION ABOUT GUN & AMMO THAT IS AVAILABLE IN THE MARKET TODAY. I HAVE BEEN BUYING THIS BOOK EVERY YEAR SINCE 1980. DUE TO MY PREOCCUPATION I MISSED 1988, 1999 & 2000 EDITIONS WHICH I SHALL ORDER VIA THE INTERNET THROUGH AMAZON.COM. THIS BOOK WAS HELPFUL IN MY CAREER AS IT EXPANDED YOUR KNOWLEDGE MORESO WHEN I AM SO FOND OF HUNTING & SHOOTING.
Better than any magazine.......2001-10-02
So what if it appears only yearly...Gun Digest is the best periodical firearms publication going and has always been. The monthy magazines don't support scholarly firearms writing...only Gun Digest.
Amazing, but..........2001-07-12
The book is a true complete guide to anything that shoots, even the airgun section is great..
It also includes a wonderful web directory, index of every known maker's address etc..
The only problem is with listed prices, some of them are little above average (I assume these are the manufacturer's suggested retail prices), While other prices listed are True market prices, which may confuse you a little.
An authoritative reference guide to firearms!.......2000-11-01
This is one of the more comprehensive reference guides to firearms. It covers all the bases- auto pistols, revolvers, rifles, shotguns, blackpowder guns and military guns. It features informative specs, data, and pictures in the firearms listings, plus other added informational filler content, which is pretty useful to collectors and enthusiasts. I would have liked to see the bulk of the introductory editorials and commentary on weapons devoted to new firearms instead of old curio and relic guns... (FYI I don't just rate this book 5-stars merely because its another book about guns and I like guns. It is probably one of the better gun reference books.)
If you do get this book, I'd recommend that you AVOID Guns Illustrated by Ken Ramage, the author of this one. Not that is particularly bad. It is really more or less a condensed version of Gun Digest with some different features. I also recommend the hardback Illustrated Book of Guns by David Miller. Jane's Gun Recognition Guide is pretty good as well.
Gun Digest: excellent illustrations..........2000-01-06
Gun Digest: excellent illustrations, accurate data, expanded lists of manufacturers abd suppliers, catalogs of accessories , and many other things make this book the first choice and a sure winner. Very useful for collectors.

The contents of this anthology might tempt one to ask: Sylvia Plath in a gardening book? Aren't gardening books supposed to be lightweight affairs? Not so, proclaim editors Charles Dean and Clyde Wachsberger, who have assembled an impressive set of poems and short stories to address what they see as "the profound passions and wild obsessions that motivate gardeners." In Plath's work, "Fable of the Rhododendron Stealers," the poet steals a small bud from a public rose garden. Carrying it home and placing it in water, she hopes to keep it alive a little longer: "I considered the poetry I rescued / from blind air, from complete eclipse." The longing in this poem is part of the book's moody atmosphere--in a powerful story by John Updike, a self-absorbed and fearful narrator sees in leaf shadows "innumerable barbaric suggestions of scimitars, flanged spears, prongs, and menacing helmets." Although it's interspersed with soothing illustrations, obviously this book is no Chicken Soup for the Gardener's Soul. Including poems by Billy Collins and Mark Doty, as well as stories by William Saroyan and Kate Chopin, the one glaring omission is Jamaica Kincaid. Her work would fit perfectly into this collection of writers who see gardens as complex metaphors, or endlessly evocative dreamscapes. --Emily White
Book Description
Winner of the 2002 Garden Writers Association of America's Garden GlobeAward for Illustration. A literary anthology that summons up the profound passions and wild obsessions of gardening. The answers to many gardening questions can be found in how-to manuals and essays, but who can fathom the passions behind the obsession? Why do we get down on our hands and knees in the mud in March or return to the garden for one last look before dark? Only the storytellers and poets can tell us. The twelve short stories and twelve poems collected here celebrate the irresistible emotions that plants inspire. A beautiful flower arouses the desire to possess in "The Lily" by H. E. Bates and "The Fable of the Rhododendron Stealers" by Sylvia Plath. In William Saroyan's "The Pomegranate Trees" a man plants fruit trees from his native Armenia and then goes to extremes to keep them alive in the California desert. Robert Graves's humorous story, "Earth to Earth," is set during the Second World War and reveals the secret ingredient in uniquely potent compost; and in Billy Collins's "Bonsai" a miniature tree changes our perspective on the whole world. Also included are Mary Austin, Kate Chopin, Amy Clampitt, Eugenia Collier, Mark Doty, Robert Frost, O. Henry, Josephine Jacobsen, Sarah Orne Jewett, Howard Nemerov, Kathleen Raine, Christopher Reid, Saki, James Schuyler, John Updike, Arturo Vivante, Alice Walker, William Carlos Williams, and Cynthia Zarin. Twelve elegant black-and-white sumi paintings of plants by Clyde Wachsberger enhance the collection. There is no better way to cultivate a gardener's passions during the long winter months than through this beautiful and moving book. 12 black and white illustrations, preface, biographical notes.
Customer Reviews:
Classy collection of essays and poems...........2001-12-16
I'd hardly call this book of essays and poems soothing. Some of these folks are mighty disturbed. I don't think John Updike ever wrote anything I could call delightful--provocative, beautiful--but not delightful. And true to form, his essay is about the aftermath of a decision to divorce and his "farewell" to some leaves he's become intimately involved with via his study window is both beautiful and sad. Sylvia Plath scares the heck out of me and her essay "Fable of the Rhododendron Stealers" is a signature piece. Then we have Alice Walker's poem "Revolutionary Petunias" about a backwoods woman who raised a George, a Martha, a Jackie and a Kennedy, and Josephine Jacobson's "Jack Frost" is a bit nippy. Robert Graves (I, Claudius and The White Goddess) addresses the behaviour of avid composters in "Earth to Earth".
No, this book is definitely not restful, but, it's really, really good. If you're a fan of the short story, particularly those with a twist you will like this book (including the O'Henry tale, "The Last Leaf"). If you're a fan of good poetry (Billy Collins anyone) you'll like this book. LEAF AND FLOWER is not about gardening per se, though gardeners like the old woman who attempts to bring beauty into sordid surroundings in Eugenia Collier's "Marigolds" are sometimes featured.
If I had to assign an organizing principle to this work, I would say this...every human life intersects with a plant at some critical juncture. OF LEAF AND FLOWER contains one of the most artistically assembled sets of essays and poems on the importance of flora for human beings.
AN UPLIFT TO THE SPIRIT.......2001-10-14
WHAT A WONDERFUL COLLECTION OF STORIES TO UPLIFT YOUR SPIRITS IN THESE DISTURBING AND TERRIBLE TIMES. WHETHER YOU ARE A GARDENER OR NOT THESE STORIES ARE A DELIGHTFUL WAY TO LOOSE YOURSELF FOR A FEW HOURS. WOULD MAKE A GREAT CHRISTMAS PRESENT FOR THE GARDENERS IN YOUR LIFE - THE ILLUSTRATIONS ARE BEAUTIFUL AND VERY SUBTLE.
ALL IN ALL A 1ST RATE COLLECTION AND A JOY TO READ AND A NICE BOOK TO HAVE AROUND TO PICK UP FROM TIME TO TIME AND REREAD.

Book Description
This is the story of one actor's rise, fall and ultimate triumph, an intimate look at a life in Hollywood and in the theater. Stricklyn pulls no punches as he portrays the angles, and demons he met along the way and those he discovered within himself.
Customer Reviews:
Unrelentingly sad..........2006-09-17
This is not a very well written book. It's more like rambling memories. I never heard of Ray Stricklyn before reading this book. He was a want-a-be actor that didn't quite make it, disappated his time and energies and doesn't seem to have done very much at all except that he randomly came in contact with 'names' in show business. The dedication in the book is the best thing in it: 'For all the fine actors who didn't get the opportunities their talents deserved...' I guess Mr. Stricklyn included himself in that. Very sad.
A clear view.......2006-07-19
Ray Stricklyn was a master of stagecraft, and his one-man show on Williams was a work of great power and beauty. His book is a clear view of a life spent as an actor, offering his personal view of Hollywood long gone. It's a wonderful story, and simply told.
Lite Reading.......2003-02-13
If someone is going to go to the trouble of writing an autobiography-especially one in which the author announces his homosexuality then the reader would expect some insights and truth seeking. This read more like the author was sitting in the seat next to you on a cross country plane trip. He just keeps talking to make the trip go faster but only lightly touches on various subjects. The fact that I was able to complete this book in one two hour sitting says more about the content than anything else. At the end the main question I had was "why did he bother"?
An Actor, Not a Writer.......2001-08-31
I ordered this book and, from the reviews on this site, thought I would enjoy a dishy Hollywood read. But this effort reads more like a diary of an actor's career -- and not a very successful one at that. Kissed by James Dean in Central Park, Stricklyn was unfortunately never kissed by the stardom he so diligently strove for. Although there are lots of remembrances of the bigger stars he worked with on stage and screen, Stricklyn's writing never "lifts" from the page and is ultimately unsatisfying, even as gossip, since there is little new or interesting to be found here, unless you are an actor yourself and looking for a remembrance of Hollywood in the 50's through the 90's. Ray seems to be sensitive to criticism and bad reviews, but his good ones are highlighted in capital letters in their entirety, leaving the reader feeling as though the author is trying to reassure himself that the profession he plugged away in for four decades was not a vain effort. Nevertheless, the author was successful enough to earn a living, and enjoy some success in every acting medium he tried, though never attaining true star status. Stricklyn's reminiscences of some of the stars he worked with are either complimentary or disapproving, without much insight into these names he drops with a dull thud throughout this book. I wish Ray could have dug more into his ambivalence over his homosexuality, which he seems to be somewhat ashamed of, but he doesn't seem one to care much for self-analysis or even to investigate the motivations for the events of his life which he describes rather flatly. Unfortunately this extends even to the motivation that informed the characterizations he brought to the stage and screen so for readers who remember his work, there is little here to sink one's teeth into insofar as how he approached the roles he played throughout his life. Ultimately, it feels like a swim in the shallow end of the pool with the reader feeling, at last that the publicist he became overruled the writer he may have become.
Demonic Angel.......2001-04-22
I love Ray.What else can I say? It's the truth. I feel as if I am the only one in the world who owns this book. Or at least I felt that way. You know what attracted me to this book? The words homosexual and gay. I am but a little girl so I can only be expected to snicker. But I could be mature if I wanted to. And I was. Very much. I felt like I was sitting in front of him the whole time and he was telling me his story. Parts were funny, parts were sad, but overall it was beautiful. Beautiful like the world. And like the world, you can touch it, you can feel it, you can love it. I was sad at the end. For it was then that I realized his time on earth was short. And I thought to myself, kill me now, for I am ready to die in the hands that wrote these beautiful words! If only I could tell him that.

A Life Under Russian Serfdom: The Memoirs of Savva Dmitrievich Purlevskii, 1800-68
ASIN: 0195076206 |
Book Description
From the rye field and the threshing barn to the local gentry and the village court, A.N. Engelgardt's Letters painted the most lively, entertaining, and insightful portrait of Imperial Russia's rural countryside. Now translated into English for the first time, judiciously abridged, and fully annotated for the modern reader, Engelgardt's account stands revealed both as a major primary source on nineteenth-century Russia and as an ever-more-timely analysis of a peasant culture in the wake of reform. A distinguished chemist at the St. Petersburg Agricultural Institute, Engelgardt was also an eloquent spokesman for liberty and reform, especially on behalf of Russia's peasant majority. Accused of conspiratorial activities by the Tsarist government, he was exiled in 1871 to his modest estate in impoverished Smolensk province, where, under police surveillance, he wrote his Letters for publication in St. Petersburg. With scientific precision, Engelgardt produced the first comprehensive eye-witness account of the peasant's daily affairs and environment, with detailed descriptions of land reform and collectivization, reflections on the role of peasant women and the effects of emancipation, discussions of local agriculture and the economy, and vivid accounts of peasant attitudes about everything from the Russo-Turkish War to anti-semitism. With an extensive introduction and copious notes, this translation is ideal for anyone interested in Russian history and peasant studies.
Customer Reviews:
Russian Exuberance.......2000-09-14
Engelgardt's book, "Letters From The Country" is a fascinating look at Russian peasantry and gentry lifstlyle during the late 19th century. It is a faboulus book that explores the meticulous lifestyles of these countryside peasants. The letters show the simple and surprisingly postive way these people go about farming their villages and taking care of eachother. I highly recommend this book to all interested in Russian history.
