I work specifically in Global Marine & Energy, Property insurance, onshore and offshore. I don't use this dictionary very often, but I'm glad I have it for general reference.

The definitions/explanations are good and basic, and nicely generalized so that they're not confusing how a term applies to, say, Auto vs. Offshore Package vs. Hull and Machinery vs. Home--so it's useful regardless of the particular branch or discipline of insurance you work on. If the term you're looking for is not in this dictionary, then it likely is specific to a certain speciality--Marine Cargo for instance has a host of terms that wouldn't belong in this book at all.

I wouldn't mind seeing a monster dictionary of all insurance terms, but think that's better fit for the academically inclined than the broker or underwriter.

You will need additional books for whatever your speciality is because this dictionary, rightfully, makes no attempt to be all inclusive. If it did, it would be confusing and useless to those of use who don't work in Personal Lines for example.

Very Useful for the Insurance Professional Newbie .......2007-06-02

I find this a pretty complete reference book for someone new to the insurance side such as a young or new risk manager. The definitions are fairly indepth but still short and to the point. To critique the book severly, as some other reviewers have, I suggest reccommending another reference source, within your review, that is considered better. I would be most anxious to take a look at it since it would allow a fair comparison.

A better name for this product would be the Long-Winded Financial Terms Dictionary. Its pages are filled with non-insurance-related definitions for accounting, legal, and other financial-service terms. Worse yet, several key insurance-related terms that have come into existence in, say, the past century are not included. The only thing I have ever used this book for is to cite the author's claim that U.S. citizens spend more money on insurance than any other type of expenditure - but that occurs in the preface. The terms themselves are unhelpful and incomplete, and the book's pages are stuffed with filler.

I have been in the insurance industry 15 years and just decided to buy this as an addition for my work desk. I rarely open the book, however, anytime I go to look up a coverage definition it is not listed. This book is of NO use to me. Not really sure who would use this.............a person who hands out maps at the Auto Club who may need to look up a word or two?

This is the best book I have seen on water gardens. It covers every step of the process from planning and construction through landscaping to stocking with fish and even maintenance.

Many options are presented as far as size style and building methods for ponds, fountains, waterfalls, and streams. Fully illustrated with color photos and diagrams this is above all a great "how to do it" book.

There is extensive coverage on choosing and caring for fish and other wildlife. A large encyclopedia of foliage including floating plants, marginals, ferns, shrubs and trees is also included. A photo, physical description, zones it will tolerate, & often some advice is given for each. Tons of landscaping enhancements are also suggested.

There is history of water gardening and plenty of photos of beautiful finished gardens to give you ideas as well. I can't emphasize too strongly through how important this hands-on book is for someone who want to create a water garden of their own.

Good for a beginner........2007-10-04

For one who wants to install their first, and likely only garden pool, this book is great. We installed a pond with a flexable liner, not the rigid type and we needed to know such things as what depth, why we needed to step the depth, type of materials, essentially all the things to do it ourselves. This book was very helpful in that regards. After four years, we are still happy we installed our pond.

NOT QUITE WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR.......2001-08-21

It may be that one book, alone, can't cover this topic. If there is one that can do the job, I haven't found it yet. Nash and Hughes offer some excellent information and provide many photos of well-designed water features for the yard. In addition to those, I was also looking for more step-by-step illustrations of pond and waterfall setups but this book was a little skimpy there The section on plant selection they've provided is very useful, however.

Great book for the beginner and the experienced.......2001-06-01

Helen Nash has written extensively for many years about water gardening in all its aspects. She has developed a vast following and has gained well-deserved notariety. I own quite a few of her books including this one. As in all her other books, she is very thorough in helping beginners grasp the essense of what it takes to make their water garden succeed. If anyone simply reads and heeds what Nash says, they can't fail. My only disappointment is the lack of color photography. There are some very good photos in it, but I still think there should be more. This is the only reason I gave it four stars instead of five. A lot of people purchase this type of book not only for instruction and understanding, they also buy it for inspiration and fresh ideas. The only way to do this is to SEE many examples. I hope someday Helen will compile a beautiful book of photography that will be a true inspiration and foundation for present and future water gardeners. In the meantime, for those of you who want to build a beautiful water garden and need ideas, get in touch with your local garden club to see if there is a water gardening club nearby. In metropolitan areas there is usually a large group of people who are members of a water gardening community. They hold open house once a year so you can go to many homes and see their water gardens. Also, the Internet has many resources available.

WE CHECKED THIS BOOK OUT OF OUR LOCAL LIBRARY AFTER REVIEWING SEVERAL BOOKS. ALSO CHECKED AT BARNES AND NOBLE FOR COMPARISIONS AND FOUND THE SUNSET GARDEN POOLS FOUNTAINS AND WATERFALLS TO BE GOOD ALSO. THE INFO. CONTAINED DESIGN, INSTALLATION AND PUMP INFO. THE PICTURES ARE IN COLOR AND VERY PRACTICAL--NOT SOMETHING UNACHIEVEABLE. WE WILL USE IT AS ONE OF OUR GUIDES IN BUILDING A WATERFALL.

A communist radical in her early days, Sadako Sawamura later achieved fame and fortune in Japanese theater, television and cinema. When she died in 1996 at the age of 87, she had already become a national legend.

This award-winning autobiography brings her earlier, more formative years in Tokyo's Asakusa district to life. Though Asakusa's poverty is gone, the graciousness, which accompanied it, will continue to live for many years yet as a result of her outstanding penmanship. Sawamura, in throwing rays of light on the Tokyo of her youth, also illuminates many key cultural aspects of modern Japan, which is, after all, largely a product of those bygone days.

Sawamura, whose family was well connected with the area's leading kabuki actors, brings us directly into the epicenter of this country's rich culture. The young Sadako had to submit to the realities of genteel poverty. She had to learn to cook, sew and generally fit into the flow of things in the neighborhood. She was being conditioned to be dependent on a man - even as many of her older sisters were warning her of the many perils such dependence on Asakusa's fickle men brings. Importantly though, she kept her spirit's dreams alive and, in this book, we see how she nurtured them along while retaining the countless benefits of her rather Spartan upbringing. The same applies particularly to her mother but also to her long gone neighbors as well. The author brings their warmth, their decency and their sheer delight in the simplest of pleasures alive in a way that can only melt your heart.

Sawamura, however, is no naive romanticist. As well as recounting many warm tales about how her parents and neighbors shaped her inner beliefs, she also paints the struggles of the area's indentured prostitutes to escape their inhumane fate. She deftly describes her father's many infidelities and other acts of personal betrayal that impinged on her. She describes aging geishas and other neighbors fallen on hard times and she recounts how her mother and their long-suffering neighbors shared what little they had with them. She paints the triumphs and travails of an over-romanticized community struggling against the tides of poverty and social elitism.

Customs, long since forgotten, resurface in this book. Thus, because needlework is no longer so important to secure a husband, women no longer deify Awashimasama, the goddess of needlework. Likewise, the Memorial Service for Needles has, along with the endemic poverty that begot the custom, long since faded into history. However, other things have not. The more intangible influences, which shaped the young Sadako Sawamura, remain. Today's local communities must also have a modus vivendi. We must get on with our neighbors just as much as Sawamura's family had to all those years ago. There are, in other words, scores of lessons pertinent both to modern Japan and life in general to be learned from this joyful book.

Indeed, the book starts with an excellent one. The young Sadako buys bruised tangerines because that is all her mother, given the large number of children she had to feed, can most prudently afford. She makes the point that no one regarded this as being odd or as an opportunity to score cheap points off those in straitened circumstances. People, in other words, as well as being socially responsible, were also independent and respectful in their minds and actions. That is a good thing.

There are many other good things in this book. Though circumstances change, people do not. Girls still flirt with boys, mothers still fret over their children, the milk of human kindness is still ladled out in generous proportions, in short, life's lovely heartbeat continues its unalterable flow into the future. And, though many things change on the surface, the truly important things stay constant. That ineffable quality in all of us, which impels us to laud those who kick against life's pricks, is one such immutable constant. The world is a better and brighter place because Sadako Sawamura not only lived in it but also because her pen has brought Asakusa's people and their universal hopes and problems so vividly to life on the printed page.

The Life of St AEthelwold is one of the most important and interesting sources for the history of Anglo-Saxon England and for the religious movements of western Europe in the tenth century. It was written around the year 1000 by Wulfstan of Winchester, who had been a student of AEthelwold; the Life, therefore, provides a firsthand account of the activities of the man who was the central force in the Benedictine reform movement of the later tenth century. It also reveals the nature of AEthelwold's education and contacts with continental monasticism, and shows why Winchester became a focal point of late Anglo-Saxon culture. The present book, by two well-known authorities in the field of Anglo-Latin literature, provides the first critical edition of Wulfstan's Life. It is accompanied by a translation, extensive historical notes, and a substantial introduction which treats both Wulfstan and Aethelwold in the light of recent scholarly research. Appendices provide editions of other texts relevant to the study of AEthelwold, including a Latin Life by his pupil AElfric, some verses by a twelfth-century Ely poet, and a previously unprinted Middle English poem on the saint.
