I actually purchased "I'd rather have a root canal than do cold calling!" in April 2005, when I changed jobs and careers. There are many authors who've written books on cold calling, telemarketing, and telesales; I've purchased, and given away, more than twenty. However, no other author I've read provides the essential essence of cold calling as elegantly as Shawn Greene. Shawn's techniques are powerfully sophisticated in their simplicity and effectiveness.

One of the most difficult things to do is creating and then delivering an opening statement over the phone, that results in the person you are calling wanting to engage in a meaningful conversation with you. Prior to reading Shawn's book I was using ideas to create opening that didn't feel right, weren't effective and created resistance versus interest in what I had to say. Adopting the ideas in Shawn's book has helped me fill my pipeline with enough qualified prospects to achieve, and often exceed my sales quota.

Lovely book capturing the essence of show jumping.......1999-12-30

Big, excellent quality photographs capture the spirit and beauty of showjumping. I also enjoyed what Elithabeth Furth, the photographer, had to say about them, as well as the comments from the top notch riders pictured. Contrary to what you might imagine, it is a very interesting book, not only to look at, but also to read. I find it a very motivating and inspiring book, I am in love with show jumping, and its wonderful to see the emotion of the sports captured so well (not an easy task!), and to know the rider's feelings towards the moments, the competitions, their horses. As Elithabeth Furth puts it: photographs capture spectacular moments of competition and immortalize them on film.

"Visions of Eventing" is a very neat book. The spectacular photography is the core of the book. Photos are of the dressage, steeplechase, cross-country, (and mishaps)and stadium jumping phases. A necessary addition to any horse lovers library

Here it is. Everything you wanted to know about the cartoon that started the teddy bear craze 100 years ago and more. Linda's research is incredible and her writing style is very warm and personal, sort of like teddy bears. The book is also packed with illustrations in both color and black and white. I especially liked reading the history of Berryman, and how the cartoon of Roosevelt saving the bear came to be, about the two cartoons depicting the famous event 100 years ago, and about how Roosevelt did not actually spare the life of the bear tied to a tree, just refused to allow it to be shot. Any arctophile worth his or her salt should have this book in their collection! Bravo on a fine volume, Linda!

A MUST HAVE for adult teddy bear collectors.......2002-02-11

As an adult collector of teddy bears, I have read many summaries regarding the 1902 Presidential bear hunting trip and the Clifford Berryman cartoon that began America's love with the newly created "teddy bear". Almost every book for adult collectors has some version of this story in its introduction. I found Linda Mullins' The Teddy Bear Men to be a superior and detailed account of the real story. Mullins wisely included the highlights from the November 1902 accounts from The Washington Post, which clearly recounted how and why a bear ended up being tied and presented to President Theodore Roosevelt for him to shoot. Washington Post cartoonist, Clifford Berryman, then portrayed this incident in a cartoon, which may be familiar to many collectors. The cartoon bear that evolved from this initial cartoon became Berryman's artist symbol ("dingbat") and linked the teddy bear (both the Berryman cartoon and the toy versions) to President Roosevelt's political career. This book is a well researched documentation of Clifford Berryman, Theodore Roosevelt, and of the significant contribution they made to the rise of the first teddy bears. It is presented in a reader friendly manner, with a well written text, short chapters, and many photos and drawings on each page. I found this book to be both intelligent and enjoyable.

Excellent Overview of Weill's Work for the Theatre.......2007-04-11

Kurt Weill's career has been hotly debated for more than 60 years. The questions began while he was still alive: Did he sell out his German artistry for the crass commercialism of Broadway? Or did he only really come into his own when he was freed from European snobbery? The answer is that both opinions are somewhat true and somewhat false. Rather than treat Weill's work as two separate careers, a European one and an American one as most commentators seem to do, Foster Hirsch treats Weill's career as a single entity. Hirsch's KURT WEILL ON STAGE is a superb chronological overview of Kurt Weill's work for the theatre, showing the logical evolution of his work. Weill became a world famous celebrity by age 30 as a result of his sensational THREEPENNY OPERA and MAHAGONNY. With the rise of Hitler and the Nazis, Weill wisely fled Germany, ending up in America after a period in Paris. But could he succeed in a new country and a new culture? Many distinguished European artist-refugees of that period simply could not adapt and faded into obscurity. Weill determined that he could succeed by writing in an American idiom. He made the transition quite smoothly, creating a string of popular Broadway shows that spawned hit songs like "September Song" and "Speak Low" before dying of a heart attack at age 50. At the time of his death he seems to have been just another Broadway composer, but with the passage of time, Weill's reputation has grown and he is now recognized as one of the 20th Century's great composers. In Hirsch's book, Weill's American shows are revealed to be a continuation of the innovative thrust of THREEPENNY OPERA. Just as he had worked with the prodigy Berthold Brecht in Germany, in America he collaborated with the nation's most prestigious writers, including the Pulitzer Prize winners Paul Green, Maxwell Anderson, Ira Gershwin, Moss Hart and Elmer Rice. Among his other collaborators were Ogden Nash and a pre-MY FAIR LADY Alan Jay Lerner. He worked with such noted directors as Max Reinhardt, Elia Kazan and Josh Logan and choreographers George Balanchine and Agnes DeMille. Mary Martin had her first starring role on Broadway in ONE TOUCH OF VENUS. Gertrude Lawrence made a huge hit in LADY IN THE DARK, which also catapulted Danny Kaye and Victor Mature to fame. And of course, there was Lotte Lenya, the German star whose unorthodox marriage to Weill is still confounding to most people. She had affairs with members of both sexes before, during and after the marriage to Weill; He made no secret of his affairs with other women. But they had an unbreakable bond that went beyond sex. Lenya devoted her life to promoting his work after he died and achieved her greatest fame late in life.

Hirsch keeps his opinions of the work fairly restricted, which I appreciated. The only Weill score he really seems to denigrate is LOST IN THE STARS. (I have to agree with him, though.) This is not really a biography of Weill. The biographical aspects of the book are very sketchy. They are there to provide a context for the work. I enjoyed this book enormously and listened to all my old Weill recordings (and bought some new ones) during the weeks I was reading it. There will probably be a revival of interest in Weill with the arrival of the new Broadway show LOVE MUSIK, which deals with the relationship of Weill and Lenya. KURT WEILL ON STAGE provides an excellent overview of Weill's life and work that I would recommend to anyone interested in the subject.

Inspiration for those who write for the musical stage.......2006-05-30

Kurt Weill On Stage, a scholarly study published in 2002 by Foster Hirsch, is an outstanding overview of the theatrical career of one of the most talented and ambitious composers writing for the stage in the 20th century. Hirsch has access to the excellent materials of the Weill-Lenya Research Center and the support of the Kurt Weill Foundation for Music; he supplements the vast array of correspondence and interviews available to him with interviews and accounts of the creation of the works from participants and spectators. He writes compellingly about Weill's gifts as musical dramatist and collaborator. The book is utterly inspiring to anyone (like me) who has ambitions to write for the musical stage.

A Biography that focuses on Weill's enitre career.......2003-07-18

Too often, scholarly work on Kurt Weill focuses mainly on his German career in the 1920s-- "The Threepenny Opera," "Mahagonny"-- but Weill had a career that extended well into the 1940s as a Broadway composer, and Hirsch's book explores both aspects, although it is clear he's a fan of Weill's later American work.

I would recommend this book as a suppliment to Ronald Sanders' biography "The Days Grow Short," the standard of Weill biographies. However, Hirsch has access to different primary sources that Sanders did not have in the 1970s, and therefore can provide a different perspective. There is also a great deal of text devoted to Lotte Lenya, Weill's wife.

It has been criticzed that Hirsch's book deemphasizes musical analysis, which is true, but that is not the purpose. Analyse the music yourself or find the writings of Kim Kowalke for musical analysis.

I found this book enjoyable and a good supplient to many other Weill biographies on the shelves

This book is very introductory, hence I don't recommend it to individuals already in the financial industry. Although, for a collge grad like myself this is the best and most resourceful book on hedge funds. Everything is explained in simple terms and very easy to understand. 5 STARS!!!

Lazy and Lame Work.......2006-04-04

People interested in getting valuable information on "How to get a Job at a Hedge Fund" will be disappointed. The author's lack of research and effort is so obvious.
The book wastes space by describing Hedge Fund Strategies and Mickey Mouse Interview Questions. The research mostly consists of a couple of profiles and interviews of young kids who have just started work at a hedge fund. Also contains obvious valuable nuggets like you need a degree from a Top 20 school.
I can't believe authors like this get paid for this kind of work.

Useful Introductory Book.......2005-11-18

This book is a good introduction for someone that has just graduated from college. I found this book useful to help me land a job at a hedgefund and I would recommend to other college grads...maybe not recruiters like above!!

Massive Failure.......2005-06-08

I read this book expecting to come away with some golden nuggets, especially since I am a recruiter for hedge funds. Instead, I found that the disparity is enormous between what really is required to land a hedge fund job and what Vault recommneds as the suggested approach. In my experience, following Vault's advice is contrary to what even commons ense would dictate is the correct approach to pursue. Separately, most of the topic covered in the book are superficial at best. A real disappointment.
