5 out of 5 stars Green Mountain mind trip........2006-12-16

Vermont, another place I'd love to visit and the Compass 2nd addition Guide to Vermont took me there and certainly wet my appetite for a visit even more.

Compass Guides leap ahead of others through powerful photography and personal descriptions that compel the senses. Vermont comes alive through sumptuous color and spicy descriptions. I believe the book even helped me come to an understanding of the culture of this northern New England state.

Leveraging the experience and passion of local authors and photographers must be the secret to the quality of this series. You just won't find many guide books this rich and satisfying.

5 out of 5 stars The best introduction.......2001-06-27

I'd lived in Vermont for ten years before buying this book (for my mom's visit). It is an impressive presentation of the character of our state. True, it's short on the often ephemeral details you'll need for a trip (the restaurants, the hotels). But in a day when most of that's available on the web anyway. What you get instead is a thoughtful description of how the reigonal differences emerged--a level of detail mostly ignored by the standard descriptions.

    2 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware!.......2001-06-11

This book is only good for overall knowledge of small towns in Vermont; every little town gets a small paragraph's worth of description. It is not very helpful if you are looking to visit and need more practical information such as where to stay, where to eat, and things to do. While it does list some lodging and restaurants, it is by no means comprehensive and you're left to do most of the leg work yourself. This book, in my opinion, was a waste of my money - I had to buy two more Vermont books to get the information I was looking for. Even the town descriptions are too short to be really helpful. This is more of an "Overview of the Splendor of Vermont" book.

5 out of 5 stars Best general guide to Vermont I've found!.......2001-02-03

Well-written and full of wonderful photos. Also full of quirky little facts and insider info. If you are looking for a good book to educate you on the best state in the union (I hope to move there in the next couple of years), then this it. You won't be disappointed. It blew away every other guide I looked at (and there are quite a few out there). As far as I'm concerned, Compass American Guides sets a new standard.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant insights from an entrepreneur who has seen it all!.......2002-01-07

Few writers are as clear, as candid and as helpful as Joe Sugarman. He not only packs his "Secrets" books with invaluable lessons that have taken him decades to learn, but he gives you fascinating, behind-the-scenes looks at dozens of advertising and marketing campaigns. From concept to completion, Joe lays out everything you could possibly hope to learn about writing compelling and profitable copy. But most important of all, Joe's books draw as much from his failures as his successes, making them infinitely more valuable that those that sell nothing but pipe dreams. As for those who complained that Joe's material is dated, sure some of it is dated as the examples literally span decades. But keep in mind, while tastes and styles may change, human nature does not. And no one understands human nature better than Joe Sugarman. His insights are timeless and their value, priceless.

5 out of 5 stars Important Resource to Help in your Marketing Efforts.......2002-01-06

Marketing is not an easy career, however Joe Sugarman's experience can help even the most experienced expert. Most good information in this field is obtained for at least several hundred dollars, Joe's work is an exception. For such a meager price you can get alot of entertaining advice about what works and what doesn't in the world of marketing. You will be hard pressed to walk away from this book without several ideas about what to do with your current project or what to begin now.

5 out of 5 stars Mail order wisdom.......2002-01-06

There are tons of marketing books, but in this one Sugarman tells you his success secrets for the specific area of marketing in which he is a proven master -- mail order. If you sell products directly from TV, space ads, or direct mail, and your promotions ask for the order rather than build brand awareness, this book can help you dramatically boost your response rates and profits.

In one of those odd, unplanned moments of fate, David Raber paid a couple of thousand dollars to liberate a depressed and frightened cougar cub from a pet-shop cage. He took Cougar, the eponymous big cat, home, introduced him to the more compact cats that already lived with him, and watched as the household adjusted, bit by bit, to the unlikely newcomer. Everyone eventually did. So, too, did the neighborhood dogs, and most of the neighbors--though a few, Raber writes grumpily, behaved in less than friendly ways when Cougar went out for a stroll or kept vigil in the bushes. All the while, Raber observed his new housemate's behavior, learning how to interpret Cougar's growls and purrs, and how to give Cougar the freedom to act naturally in an unnatural setting.

Bringing Cougar into his home, Raber writes, "would refocus my priorities and change what I had considered important." He recounts that transformation and his changing view of wildlife and the environment, as well as the accidental fame that befell Cougar as the residents of one crowded Florida town after another came to appreciate his company. A kind of modern rejoinder to Joy Adamson's Born Free, Raber's memoir of his sentimental education in the ways of Felis concolor will interest animal enthusiasts of all kinds. --Gregory McNamee

                Book Description

David Raber first saw Cougar when he was an eight-week-old kitten locked up in a toaster-sized cage, being put on display and poked and prodded by the crowd.Raber took him out, held him, and just couldn't put him back.He made four promises that day: one, no more petting, out of respect for Cougar; two, no more cages; three, he would educate people against exotic animal ownership, and four, he would make Cougar happy, and this has become a 24-hour-a-day learning process and a duty that he adores.Being the only large cat in the country who is federally licensed without a cage, Cougar strides down streets, roams hotel lobbies, enters speedboat competitions, and even films a Puma Sportswear ad with several Olympic gold medalists.Together, Raber and Cougar are a team, and in this book, Raber recounts their many adventures together - he teaches Cougar about elevators, switches, and doors while saving him from bullets and speeding cars; and Cougar teaches him about deer, oppossum, and squirrels while rescuing him from alligators and raging rivers. In helping each other, they share their weaknesses and become strong. As the official poster model for the IAMS company, Cougar has been seen by millions.Beautiful and touching, entertaining and provocative, Through Cougar's Eyes is a love story that dispels the prevalent and presumptuous thinking that mankind and wildlife can't get along and depicts sacrifice and dedication with a message: relating to animals will set you both free.AUTHORBIO: DAVID RABER graduated from DePauw University with a pre-med degree and went on to become a distinguished Naval graduate. His previous occupations include Naval aviator and the owner of an aircraft management charter business. He is currently employed as the loyal servant and devoted friend to his companion, Cougar.

3 out of 5 stars For lovers of wild cats.......2002-07-15

David Raber tells a unique story -- one which many animal lovers might wish to relive. His accounts of life with this amazing cougar are worth the read. But an animal expert he is not. He may know volumes about raising a cougar in his home, but he called an opossum a rodent. Other misstatements were less obvious but inexcusable. Still, the story was fun.

4 out of 5 stars One Amazing Animal.......2001-12-07

Ever since I was a young kid I wanted to own a big cat. I have lived with a house cat ever since I was born, 21 yrs. It doesn't need to be said how happy I was to find a book detailing big cat ownership. How interesting is this book? Well, I read all 200+ pages in 2 days. While not the most professionally written, it is packed with tales of Cougar that at times seem almost to amazing to be true. When finished, I didn't want it to be. I want to hear more about Cougar's adventures. Although David is against big cat ownership, I think this book also shows possibilities with the right committment. I hope to someday meet Cougar and David to share in the joy that this great cat brings wherever he takes David. My best to Dave and Cougar

5 out of 5 stars If you love your cat, you will love the stories about Cougar.......2001-05-19

I suppose it is every cat lovers dream to "own" a big cat like a cougar. But most people never get that chance, and if they did would quickly realize what an all consuming job it is to care for a tamed wild cat - time, money, emotion, legalities, not to mention the fact that you want to do the best for the animal. Well the author of "Through Cougar's Eyes" knows exactly what it is like to live with a big cat. And although he never in his wildest dreams ever even considered adopting a cougar he tells in touching detail how they came to be together for life.

I love cats and I love hearing cat stories. This is a humdinger of a cat story that chronicles the adventures of a man, his wife and a very large cat. It is simply amazing what David and Linda Raber were and are still willing to do to care for this beautiful animal. Are their efforts worth the sacrifices they have made? You bet they are. This animal lives a wonderful life because he is so loved and in return the Rabers have received so much joy.

I just love this story. If you love cats or if you love animals you are going to love this book and besides since Cougar is the national spokes-cat for Iams cat food you can actually meet him and his human family in person as they travel the country together, which I highly recommend it is such a treat, just like this book.

3 out of 5 stars Unique historical information about the Mugello track..........1998-04-16

This Italian and English language book covers the history of the infamous Mugello track now owned by Ferrari SpA. It includes a number of historical photos from the early days of the track and more recent photos from Ferrari Club Italia's Mugello meet.

For some this may be an interesting book, particularly if you are curious about the track's history. It includes a large number of unique photos detailing the track's construction, some interesting bits on the history of racing in the area before the track was created, and the describes the issues involved in the design of the track.

Unfortunately, I noticed several errors in the identification of different Ferrari models and therefore I'm not sure that the historical information about the track can be completely trusted. If you are interested in the track's history or are filling in a complete historical Ferrari library I'd recommend purchasing this book, otherwise leave it for another time...

                            Book Description

It is the genius of actor Carroll O'Connor that millions of fans will forever confuse him with his most unforgettable creation, Archie Bunker. But O'Connor has lived the kind of rich, momentous life that Archie could never have imagined. Now, emrerging from gehind the actor's mask for the first time, O'Connor writes eloquently and intimately about his great triumphs and terrible tragedies—and a career that has been immortalized in television history.

Growing up in Depression-era New York, Carrol O'Connor made his way armed with the quick wit, mischievous bent of mind, and engaging Irish charm that flow through these pages. From his rough and tumbel days in the merchant marine during World War ll—marked by big dreams, bar brawls, and bloody noses he moved on to salad days in Dublin. There he received an education in literature and in life, found his true calling in the theatre, and married his wife, Nancy...a fifty year success story that's still going strong.

O'Connor was soon invitied to Hollywood, the scene of his greatest achievements. His unique persective on the creation of All in the Family —and his certainty at the start that is was destined for ratings disaster—reveals television history in the making. And O'Connor vividly recalls scores of classic moments with Noman Lear, Rob Reiner and Jean Stapleton, as well a numberous other colleagues, including Howard Rollins (In the Heat of the Night), Clint Eastwood (Kelly's Heroes), and Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor (Cleopatra).

But Hollywood was also the source of O'Connor's most painful memory: the cocaine addition and suicide of his son, Hugh. As a grieving father, O'Connor was forced to asssume the most poignant and powerful role of his life, and he speaks honestly here about both his loss and his efforts to educate others about the horror of drug abuse.

Candid and insightful, spirited and funny, this is the story of all the families Carroll O'Connor has been able to call his own. And in a career graced with landmark achievements, I Think I'm Outta Here stands as on of the most moving and memorable of all.

                            5 out of 5 stars Great Memoir.......2004-10-23

For those looking for a page by page account of O'Connor's groudbreaking work as Archie, this book will not quench your thrist. However, if you are looking for an erudite and honest memior on Carroll O'Connor the man this is book is a must. Carroll writes in a scholastic yet tangible style that captures your interest in the things beyond Archie. I would dare say this book is a must have for any actor or actress as it details the world of the golden stage on or off camera through the eyes of the actor. Sometimes O'Connor was frusturated with the souless monguls at the network or the ticket pandering stage producer, yet he always stands for what matters most to the actor and audience, the final product. Any skilled or novice actor/actress will gain insight into the journey of the stage. When you finish this work you will quickly learn and hopefully absorb the passion O'Connor had for not only his work but for his desire to aid humanity as a often quiet and sometimes not so quiet reformer. We need more like him.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, but not about All in the Family.......2003-12-19

I'm a huge fan of that show, and believe O'Connor's long portrayal of Archie is the greatest and most groundbreaking acting performance in television history. So the fact that he offers almost no insight into that work in this memoir is a major letdown.
Still, he had a fascinating life and this is a very good read, even though he certainly doesn't always come off as a likeable or tolerant fellow. He has deep, strident beliefs, little affection for those who differ, and he bluntly tells us so.

The final chapter about his beloved son's descent into addiction, madness, and suicide, and a father's inability to stop it, is truly wrenching. That could have been a book by itself.

2 out of 5 stars All In The Mind.......2002-03-24

I'm not going to say much here; Only that this book may be the least interesting autobiography I have ever read. You know Carrol from "All In The Family" moreso than any other role he has portayed, yet he avoids discussing his tenure on that ground-breaking show from the 70's, instead telling us many things about his early history.
It appears he may feel the show overshadowed everything else he did, so to answer that, left it out of his book.
I was disappointed reading it and would not recommend the book to anyone.

                            5 out of 5 stars I loved this book!!.......2002-03-19

It tells the whole story thru the eyes of Carroll O'Connor!
It is a wonderful book to get lost in.
I started out a fan of All in the Family and ended a fan of O'Connor!!

1 out of 5 stars Not any of the Family.......2002-01-11

I love Archie Bunker and still consider him one of the best TV characters ever created. But I do not like Carroll O'Connor. I THINK I'M OUTTA HERE is a convoluted, self-centered work showing O'Connor to have been a man oblivious to the world around him. This book is dreadful. His belligerence likely sent his editor into hiding, for what else could explain why O'Connor was allowed his digressions into Irish history and his ridiculous footnotes about nothing? At one point, he tells of the "Divil" on his shoulder (with a footnote explaining how the "Divil" is another form of the "Devil") who speaks with an Irish accent, and how this Divil helped steer him through life.

I'm sure that O'Connor worked very hard to get where he did, to get the roles he did. But he makes it seem as if he deserved everything: he was born to his roles, and everyone in Hollywood thought so, too. I'd admire the man more if he told us how hard he did work to become a star. I'd enjoy hearing more about his friends in entertainment, and what he thought of working with Rob Reiner and Sally Struthers.

O'Connor follows the path of others who are known for doing one great thing and then write about it: he skirts around his most important accomplishment. He tells us how brilliant he was when he recreated Norman Lear's Archie Bunker, about how great Jean Stapleton was as Edith (no argument there), but then says something like "Those of you looking for a rehashing of what happened during the production of that show won't find it here," then jumps to his life post-cancellation of the show. Nothing new here.

The final chapter of this book is pitiful, but also made me pity Carroll O'Connor, which I'm sure would have angered the man greatly. His son, Hugh, succumbed to his drug habit, committing suicide after O'Connor attempted numerous interventions with his family at his side. It wasn't enough. Only in this final chapter do we see O'Connor as just another person -- vulnerable, powerless to control the lives of others -- a real man. It's sad that he could not have broken free of the reins of pretentiousness and told us his whole story with such emotion.

If you're a fan of All in the Family, steer clear. If you're a fan of Carroll O'Connor, rent some of his movies, watch episodes of All in the Family and In the Heat of the Night, then turn off your TV. This book does him no justice.

                                  Book Description

Alfred Webb (1834-1908) the son of a radical Quaker printer and publicist, he brought a rare breadth of vision and moral courage to Ireland's campaigns for Home Rule and land reform. His parliamentary career was limited to five unsettling years marred by the bitter split over Parnell’s leadership, but Webb played a key administrative role in every major nationalist organization from Butt’s Home Government Association to the United Irish League. Webb’s wide-ranging radicalism was evident in his early involvement in the anti-slavery movement and his later associations with anti-colonial struggles outside Ireland. His contribution to Irish nationalism was soon forgotten, but his presidency of the Madras National Congress of 1894 is still remembered in India. Written in longhand shortly before his death, Webb’s reflective yet circumstantial autobiography offers fresh perspectives on Irish and Indian nationalism. The editor’s introduction further unveils the unique career of an influential moralist negotiating the murky waters of nationalist politics.
