A Super Travel/History Guide.......1999-02-13

Where was this book when I was studying North Carolina history? I was born in NC, but have learned a lot I didn't know from this book. Turnage has done great research and includes lots of little known trivia that really make the history come alive. Readable, entertaining, and lots of good travel information, too. Outstanding photographs! If you're traveling in NC, this guide is a plus.

South Carolina by Henry Leifermann is one of a series of Compass American Guides. Each state is written by a different author, and South Carolina is not only the best of them all, but also one of the most informative and concise guides ever written.

South Carolina is a diverse and beautiful state, and few states can boast that they begin at the Atlantic Ocean and end at the mountains. The author first provides us with a crash course in history from the geology of South Carolina, to the Colonial Era, the Revolution, the Antebellum Era, The Civil War and through to race relations and the diverse population that makes up this state. Leifermann also includes chapters on the Sea Islands, Charleston, Coastal Plantations, Myrtle Beach and Grand Strand, Coastal Plain, Piedmont, and the Blue Ridge. In addition to maps, timelines, paintings, and drawings, all the chapters include wonderful photography by Eric Horan.

This book is also packed full of pertinent information such as facts about the climate, the economy, the population, and specifics (state bird, state flower, etc.). It also provides the reader with practical information such as bed and breakfasts, hotel chains, restaurants, historic sites, festivals and events, museums, parks and forests, tours, golf courses, and places to get tourist information. It even includes a recipe or two.

So, if you're planning a trip to South Carolina, forget the AAA Tourbook and pick up Leifermann's book instead. You won't be disappointed.

The best comprehensive guidebook to South Carolina.......1999-11-25

Leifermann is an excellent writer, and his commentary is insightful. This is not your typical Chamber of Commerce, tourist brochure type of guidebook. The book is comprehensive and attractive, chock full of useful information. It contains excellent photography and tell-it-like-it-is descriptions. It has the accurate maps that are a necessity to any adequate guidebook. If you buy only one resource on South Carolina, this book should be it.

Do Your Budget A Favor, Get A Different Book.......2007-09-12

This book isn't expensive and it isn't without merit, but I recommend you look elsewhere. With all due respect to the authors, this book is rather gimmicky. The flow of the book is choppy and at several points the authors drop the ball by treating various subject with a degree of shallowness that is disappointing even for such a small pocket book. One example is the treatment of credit cards. They repeat the common mantras about credit cards, but the coverage of situations not to use credits cards is repetitive and there is no discussion whatsoever of point-systems that many credit cards offer--an amazing way for a person on a budget to expand their purchasing power.

I close the cover of this book feeling that I've just hung up the phone with a chatty telemarketer, somewhat impressed with their jovial presentation but feeling hardly educated by the interchange.

I have read several budgeting books, and have even taken a class at my bank about budgeting. All of them left me with the message "you want more money? save some!" without giving me real guidelines on how to do it. I had a financial epiphany when I read this book. I now have a savings account with automatic payroll deduction. This account is for emergencies, fun things like travel, and what I call "sporadic predictables" like car insurance and bills I pay every 10 weeks that often catch me off guard. Then the rest of the money from my paycheck is carefully but flexibly divided into obligations (like mortgage and student loans), controllable necessities (like the electric bill and phone bill), and then spendable money. The confidence I feel now after reading this book is well worth the affordable price. I highly recommend it.

Short and Easy to Do.......2006-05-31

I read this short book in just a couple hours and by the end I had a working budget that is doable for my family's lifestyle. I really like the idea of having separate monthly monetary limits on personal pocket money, family allowance and personal allowance. I definitely had the Starbucks syndrome, where I spend so much money on lunches, coffee and snacks that I was frittering away thousands a year. Having only a certain amount in cash each week in my pocket for all of these little expenses has been really helpful, and I don't have write down everytime I buy a coffee. I also really like the separate savings accounts - for the must fund, rainy day fund, want fund, and other contingencies like insurance and taxes. I just put a certain amount away in a separate account each month and then just pay it when some it comes due. Perfect if you just want a quick guide to making a helpful and uncomplicated budget.

More Details Needed.......2005-10-24

I recieved this book as a gift. As a person considering the purchase of their first dog I thought it would be a wonderful gift. The book is OK. A good overveiw of what to expect in training a puppy but not too much in the way of actual training excercises. I my opinion skip this one and spend the 10 bucks somewhere else. Unless you're just looking for a breif overveiw of what you're getting into.

I was hoping for more........1997-08-02

The book has a lot of nice pictures of all different breeds. It tells a little about each breed shown, ex. a certain breed might take longer to train and so forth. I got the book by the title, Training the Perfect Puppy, I assumed the majority of the book would be on different training methods. The actual training part of the book, on average, consisted of a couple short paragraphs. Some of the commands consisted of two sentences of what the command means, like I needed to clarify what the Drop It command was suppose to mean. Maybe I had high expectations, or maybe I just wanted to be able to train my puppy, but I was not overly impressed with this purchase - oh well, $10 is not that bad.

Fantastic Biography of Inger Stevens.......2007-05-09

Mr. Patterson's biography of actress Inger Stevens is comprehensive and thorough. This is the definitive writing of a brilliant and beautiful star who met with a tragic ending on 30 April 1970. Mr. Patterson clearly and concisely builds a picture of what Inger Stevens was like as a person, as a star, and of her interactions with some of the most famous men of the 50's and 60's. Of her tragic ending, Mr. Patterson succinctly applies his vast knowledge as a detective to build a case that suicide may not have been the cause of her death, but rather the possibilty of murder. Mr. Patterson's book is a must for anyone who would like to get to know Inger Stevens and appreciate her and and her legacy in movies.

Flawed but interesting.......2007-03-28

Swashbuckled is correct; the book could have used a good editor, and the murder theory seems more like an attempt to sell the book than to have any real foundation. But flawed as it is the research about her life and especially her life before fame is well documented. There is a bibliography, footnotes and an index, all rare in such biographies. For those curious about a beautiful actress with a secret interracial marriage who apparently took her life at the age of 35 the book provides ample material for speculation.

Woman on Fire.......2005-03-18

Manu US viewers remember seeing Inger Stevens first in the child custody Bing Crosby melodrama MAN ON FIRE. Because it was seen as Bing's follow up to the heavy drama of THE COUNTRY GIRL, which had starred Grace Kelly, Inger Stevens was compared unfavorably to Grace Kelly's classic good looks and acting ability. Even though the critics anknowledged that in a glum part, Inger Stevens brought some life to it, she was dismissed as a Grace Kelly wannabe before her career got off the ground. And Hollywood insiders and gossips were wagging their tongues about Inger and Bing. Today, in the wake of "Bennifer," their purported romance would make them "Binger" I guess. Anyhow Crosby was notoriously caddish to his female co-stars, and most of them wound up on the scrap heap of Hollywood history, but for Inger Stevens, she was just beginning a romantic history that would see her careening from romance to romance like a bumper car out of control. Who didn't she fall for? James Mason, Harry Belafonte, Anthony Quinn, David Janssen, just about every guy who crossed her path who might as well have had "Trouble" written on his forehead.

It was almost as if, as Patterson indicates, she had some kind of delusion about where to locate strength in a man, and life found her confused about what was real, what wasn't. The druggy vacuity of VALLEY OF THE DOLLS seems campy to us today when we see it on screen, but it was the harsh reality of Inger's life.

Patterson's book takes the high road in trying to separate out the rumor from the fact, and it opens up a lot of previously sealed doors. Though Inger made only seventeen films, and of course many episodes of her popular TV series, we continue to think of her as a beautiful blonde whose life was just too painful for her to go on living.

The Farmers Daughter Remembered .......2005-02-22

Sensitive portrayal of a fine actress. Detailed account of her troubled childhood, rise to stardom, broken affairs, battles with depression. Added with some lovely photos. This book makes interesting reading for any Inger Stevens fan.

Fascinating fragments of a troubled star's story.......2003-01-18

There's not a lot of information out there readily available on Inger Stevens' life, and from what Mr. Patterson writes, most of it is wrong anyway. According to his biography of the actress, Ms. Stevens herself gave out fictitious and occasionally contradictory accounts of her life to reporters and acquaintances, which must have made it hard to piece together a definitive account of what happened to her.

To that end, Patterson should be commended for his efforts to detail her story, and for his detective work into her mysterious death (which he states may have been a murder). This book's strength is its pooling of information on this often overlooked actress -- the compilation of personal letters, interviews with family and friends, reviews and articles from a variety of sources -- giving her fans and interested readers insights into her unique personality.

The book's weaknesses, however, are apparent in the writing and editing. The information is often presented in choppy, disjointed fashion, while the prose is at times awkward, repetitive and poorly punctuated.

These qualms aside, the facts of Inger Stevens' life not only speak for themselves, they shout how lonely and lost she often was. Even if she didn't take her own life, her long trail of badly chosen relationships only led one way. It's a sad story, and I appreciate the hard work Mr. Patterson invested to tell it.
