Y Sin Embargo.......2005-12-25
Great story, but the book could have been better.......2005-02-17
The story of how the first plain-paper copier was invented is exciting and inspirational to engineers and designers. This book was an excellent compilation of the history of paper, historical duplicating techniques, and modern technology. However, I found myself wanting more detail on the technical details of the discoveries and history of the copier as I read this book.
I give the story (5 out of 5) stars, but my impression of the writing style of the author was only average (3 out of 5 stars). This book was enjoyable, but at times I wanted to be finished with it so I could move on to another book.
An involving history of the Xerox as a whole.......2005-02-05
How did the lowly photocopy evolve to become a business-changing commodity? Enter one Chester Carlson, who almost single-handedly pioneered the Xerox machine. David Owen provides an involving history of the Xerox as a whole, describing the long effort to turn xerography into a essential business world commodity, and considering how one shy patent attorney pursued his father's strange business scheme, rising from poverty through hard work and dream up his own copying machine. Copies in Seconds: How a Lone Inventor and an Unknown Company Created the Biggest Communication Breakthrough Since Gutenberg--Chester Carlson and the Birth of the Xerox Machine is a strongly recommended acquisition for academic and community library collections.
A weak facsimile of a life.......2005-01-17
I was genuinely interested in the history of the Xerox machine. The process of invention and design is fascinating to me. The story that Owen tells is an interesting story written in an uninteresting way. What is more surprising, given the author's credentials, is that the writing level is that of a 7th-grader! I labored through the book since I was interested in the history. But this is a tedious read indeed.
A Breakthrough Development.......2004-11-18
Looked at in a certain light, communications has hinged on the reproduction of documents. For centuries the only way to get multiple copies of something was to copy them by hand. We have the image of monks in their little cells painstakingly copying books, the Bible mainly. This lead to the whole concept of you don't need to read the Bible, the priest will do it for you - after all, we only have one copy.
The next big invention was from Gutenberg. (This was also the last big invention according to the folk at the Gutenberg museum in Mainz, Germany.) But immediately people began thinking of how to make a quick copy. James Watt in the late 1770's marketed a type of copier. As this book points out in its historical section, various kinds of copiers in various stages of sophistication were invented through the years.
Then came Chester Carlson. He was to spend all of his life working on the copying process. A Cal Tech physics graduate, he learned a big about the effect light had on semi-conductors and from this he spent his life on the process.
Chester Carlson spent years developing, finding a company to work with, then setting up the production of copying machines using his technology.
Although most of the time in this book is spent on Chester Carlson, no less important to the story of the copier is Joseph c. Wilson, the president of Haloid company. He literally bet his company on making this invention work. Needless to say, his company, renamed Xerox, became a success.
Splendid book.
Customer Reviews:
not much for pet owners.......2003-04-10
About 75% of the information in this book is about breeding budgies in avaries or for competitions. there was little information that was specifically for pet owners, and some of the information was incorrect (for instance, it recommends grit and seeds instead of pellets). however, the writers attitude toward pet birds was refreshing: he really stresses paying plenty of attention to them and preserving their 'natural' bird behavior. however, someone who cares enough about their pet to buy a book about them already knows that.
Well Worth Reading.......2000-04-26
This book has been very helpful. John Bales has very concisely informed the reader all about choosing, breeding, and raising parakeets. Unfortunately, the budgie that I had originally bought this book for died the day I received the book. However, it was an immediate help as it taught me to diagnose the problem with my bird and what I could do, if anything, to avoid it happening again. Also, it has been a big help in my selecting a new budgie.

Pictures are good but missing details.......2006-06-12
After readign the other reviews I purchased this book. I am very disappointed. I had a lot of questions and this book failed to answer them. It is not very detailed or complete. I found the book "Waterfalls, Ponds and Streams" to be much more detailed and complete. It provides much better quidance in building a pond and stream.

BOOK ORTHO CREATING WATER GARDENS BOOK BOOK
Customer Reviews:
Amazing Book.......2003-04-08
'Creating Water Gardens' has detailed pictures and clear instructions explaining every aspect of water gardening, including container gardening, ponds, streams, waterfalls, fountains etc. It costs much less that other books it's size, and has more content. The project ideas are beautiful (and do-able), every plant has a picture and a long description. Every aspect of water gardening is covered, including the kinds of equipment you'll need and what it looks like. I highly suggest this book, it's definately the best I've found so far :)
Book Description
Explains how to design and install all types of water gardens, from naturalistic to formal, as well as fountains, waterfalls, streams, and bog gardens-step by step. Includes plants, fish, and other pond inhabitants. Over 400 color photos.
Customer Reviews:
Best book I have seen on water gardens.......2000-06-06
This is the best book I have seen on water gardens. It covers every step of the process from planning and construction through landscaping to stocking with fish and even maintenance.
Many options are presented as far as size style and building methods for ponds, fountains, waterfalls, and streams. Fully illustrated with color photos and diagrams this is above all a great "how to do it" book.
There is extensive coverage on choosing and caring for fish and other wildlife. A large encyclopedia of foliage including floating plants, marginals, ferns, shrubs and trees is also included. A photo, physical description, zones it will tolerate, & often some advice is given for each. Tons of landscaping enhancements are also suggested.
There is history of water gardening and plenty of photos of beautiful finished gardens to give you ideas as well. I can't emphasize too strongly through how important this hands-on book is for someone who want to create a water garden of their own.

NOT QUITE WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR.......2001-08-21
It may be that one book, alone, can't cover this topic. If there is one that can do the job, I haven't found it yet. Nash and Hughes offer some excellent information and provide many photos of well-designed water features for the yard. In addition to those, I was also looking for more step-by-step illustrations of pond and waterfall setups but this book was a little skimpy there The section on plant selection they've provided is very useful, however.
Great book for the beginner and the experienced.......2001-06-01
Helen Nash has written extensively for many years about water gardening in all its aspects. She has developed a vast following and has gained well-deserved notariety. I own quite a few of her books including this one. As in all her other books, she is very thorough in helping beginners grasp the essense of what it takes to make their water garden succeed. If anyone simply reads and heeds what Nash says, they can't fail. My only disappointment is the lack of color photography. There are some very good photos in it, but I still think there should be more. This is the only reason I gave it four stars instead of five. A lot of people purchase this type of book not only for instruction and understanding, they also buy it for inspiration and fresh ideas. The only way to do this is to SEE many examples. I hope someday Helen will compile a beautiful book of photography that will be a true inspiration and foundation for present and future water gardeners. In the meantime, for those of you who want to build a beautiful water garden and need ideas, get in touch with your local garden club to see if there is a water gardening club nearby. In metropolitan areas there is usually a large group of people who are members of a water gardening community. They hold open house once a year so you can go to many homes and see their water gardens. Also, the Internet has many resources available.
ONE OF THE BEST FOR BEGINNERS.......1999-08-12
WE CHECKED THIS BOOK OUT OF OUR LOCAL LIBRARY AFTER REVIEWING SEVERAL BOOKS. ALSO CHECKED AT BARNES AND NOBLE FOR COMPARISIONS AND FOUND THE SUNSET GARDEN POOLS FOUNTAINS AND WATERFALLS TO BE GOOD ALSO. THE INFO. CONTAINED DESIGN, INSTALLATION AND PUMP INFO. THE PICTURES ARE IN COLOR AND VERY PRACTICAL--NOT SOMETHING UNACHIEVEABLE. WE WILL USE IT AS ONE OF OUR GUIDES IN BUILDING A WATERFALL.

dissapointing book.......2003-01-23
Very tiny book. Few pictures. Very dissappointing.
Book Description
All the documented facts concerning the novelist are collected in this detailed account of Jane Austen's life, background and literary career. Her role within an affectionate and talented family group is described in the Austens' own words, showing how Jane was valued as daughter, sister, aunt and friend. The book demonstrates how Jane transformed the details of her peaceful life in the Hampshire countryside, along with the wartime careers of her brothers, into six novels that are among the most popular in the English language.
Customer Reviews:
The Compleat Jane.......2007-01-21
A literate, entertaining, complete, and unsentimentalized account of Jane Austen and her family, nuclear and extended. The Austens and the Leighs (Jane's mother's family) were both numerous and well-connected; their relationships are detailed in an unequalled series of family trees. Ms. Le Faye has written about Jane Austen many times, and knows her stuff. If I were limited to one source of information on Miss Austen, A Family Record is the one I'd pick.
Book Description
Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. Hesperides Press are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.
Book Description
n nn HER LIFE AND LETTERS A FAMILY RECORD BY WILLIAM AUSTEN-LEIGH AND RICHARD ARTHUR AUSTEN-LEIGH WITH A PORTRAIT NEW YORK K. P. DUTTON COMPANY 31 WEST TWENTY-THIRD STREET 1913 MM C - u v PREFACE SINCE 1870-1, when J. E. Austen Leigh l published his Memoir of Jane Austen, considerable additions have been made to the stock of information available for her biographers. Of these fresh sources of knowledge the set of letters from Jane to Cassandra, edited by Lord Brabourne, has been by far the most important. These letters are invaluable as memoires pour servir although they cover only the comparatively rare periods when the two sisters were separated, and although Cassandra purposely destroyed many of the letters likely to prove the most interesting, from a distaste for publicity. Some further correspondence, and many incidents in the careers of two of her brothers, may be read in Jane Austens Sailor Brothers, by J. H. Hubback and Edith C. Hubback while Miss Constance Hill has been able to add several family traditions to the interesting topographical information embodied in her Jane Austen Her Homes and Her Friends, Nor ought we to forget the careful research shown in 1 Father of one of the present writers, and grandfather of the other other biographies of the author., especially that by Mr. Oscar Fay Adams. During the last few years, we have been fortunate enough to be able to add to this store and every existing MS. or tradition preserved by the family, of which we have any knowledge, has been placed at our disposal. It seemed, therefore, to us that the time had come when a more complete chronological account of the novelists life might be laid before the public, whose interest in Jane Austen as we readily acknow ledge has shown no signs of diminishing, either in England or in America. The Memoir must always remain the one first hand account of hen resting on the authority of a nephew who knew her intimately and that of his two sisters. We could not compete with its vivid personal recollections and the last thing we should wish to do, even were it possible, would be to super sede it. We believe, however, that it needs to be supplemented, not only because so much additional material has been brought to light since its publica tion, but also because the account given of their aunt by her nephew and nieces could be given only from their own point of view, while the incidents and characters fall into a somewhat different perspective if the whole is seen from a greater distance. Their knowledge of their aunt was during the last portion of her life, and they knew Her best of all in her last year, when her health was failing and she was living in much seclusion and they were not likely to be the recipients of her inmost confidences on the events and sentiments of her youth. Hence the emotional and romantic side of her nature a very real one has not been dwelt upon. No doubt the Austens were, as a family, unwilling to show their deeper feelings, and the sad end of Janes one romance would naturally tend to intensify this dislike of expression but the feeling was there, and it finally found utterance in her latest work, when, through Anne Elliot, she claimed for women the right of fi loving longest when existence or when hope is gone. 3 Then, again, her nephew and nieces hardly knew how much she had gone into society, or how much, with a certain characteristic aloofness, she had enjoyed it. Bath, either when she was the guest of her uncle and aunt or when she was a resident London, with her brother Henry and his wife, and the rather miscellaneous society which they enjoyed Godmersham, with her brother Edward and his county neighbours in East Kent these had all given her many opportunities of studying the particular types which she blended into her own creations. A third point is the uneventful nature of the authors life, which, as we think, has been a good deal exaggerated...
