This book is the self-contained third volume of a comprehensive series on nitrogen fixation. It presents the state-of-the-art in regards to genomic sciences applied to nitrogen-fixation research. The advent of genomic sciences represents a new era for biology. The classic paradigm based on the gene has now changed to a paradigm that is based on the genome. The knowledge of the complete nucleotide sequence of a genome and its consequences with regard to both transcription and translation lead to an integral and comprehensive view of the biochemistry and physiology of an organism. Moreover, comparative genomic studies provide new insights for a better understanding of the evolutionary process. Nitrogen-fixation research has fully entered the genomics era since the first complete nucleotide sequences of a rhizobial symbiotic plasmid and a methanogenic archaeon were first reported in 1997. Now, the complete nucleotide sequences of many genomes of nitrogen-fixing organism from different taxonomic groups are available. This volume includes chapters devoted to the genomes of specific organisms as well as chapters that cross organismal lines and analyse general aspects centred on functional genomics, genome dynamics, taxonomy, and evolution. No other available work provides the up-to-date and in-depth coverage of this volume, which is intended to serve as an indispensable reference work for academic, governmental, and industrial scientists working in the areas of genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics, including those studying evolution and taxonomy; to assist students to enter this challenging area of research; and to provide science administrators with ready access to vital relevant information.

Description:
Trachypogon savannas in Venezuela are mainly used for extensive cattle raising. These savannas are currently affected with man-made or natural fires. During fires, 24% of the nitrogen (N) necessary for primary production is lost through volatilisation. More is lost by leaching and/or erosion. Since those losses are not compensated for by N input through precipitation, N balance in these savannas depends on biological mechanisms. In this study we explore the possible forms of biological N fixation, in particular the cyanobacterial activity from soil microbial crusts, and the contribution of grass rhizosphere microorganisms. Determinations were made by using, in situ, the method of acetylene reduction as an estimate of nitrogenase activity (NA). N"2 fixation due to NA in the soil-plant system is 13.7 and 7.8 kg ha^-^1 year^-^1 for the burned and protected plots, respectively. Even considering the lowest fixation values by microbial crusts, they could provide 6% of the N needed for annual production of the vegetation of the savanna under fire, and 9% in the protected savanna. These amounts of N"2 sustained the productivity of the vegetation experiencing periodical fires.

The best thing about this guide is the format. It is arranged alphabetically and each 'attraction' is on a two-page spread and contains description, tips, address, hours, age range, website, cost AND nearby kid-friendly places to eat and a 'hey kids' fun fact or something to look for when visiting this attraction. There are cross-reference lists by category (parks, museums, sports, etc.) and by neighborhood. This is a supplement -- not the only guide to carry since it has no maps -- but lots of useful information.

While this book does contain good descriptions of places to visit with kids it does not contain enough inforamation to function as a primary guidebook. It contains absolutely no general information about NYC, getting around, places to stay. It is not organized by neighborhood, has no maps, and gives no information on getting to the recommended venues. It also offers only very limited information on places to eat. In short, you can buy it as a supplement if you like (however, Frommers NYC with Kids lists all the same activities and provides all the necessary general info) but frankly I found this book to be useless.

A quick and to-the-point guide. Well organized with info on neighborhood restaurants on the same page as the description of the attraction. And the size makes it easy to slip in a coat pocket or purse. Perfect.

This book is so easy to read. All sites are listed in alphabetical order, so there is no flipping to the index that I had to do with other books. It gives a good, parent based review on many of the most popular NYC sites.

A Man and Car Culture.......2001-02-06

A fascinating read. I could not put this book down. A well-written insider perspective on the automobile industry and American car culture. In a nutshell, Mr. Wangers is a car marketing maven. The question is, did car culture influence Mr. Wangers or did Mr. Wangers influence car culture? Did Mr. Wangers influence mass American culture? This book "asks" many questions and raises interesting points. What are the constraints in designing, marketing and engineering an automobile? What role should the govenment take? On the one hand, Mr. Wangers is lightly critical of the federal government regarding emissions and safety issues. On the other hand, he views govt. regulation as a challenge that fosters creativity and engineering prowess. Certainly, the government saved the car industry by forcing it to develop emissions and safety devices. This is a well rounded book for the Sociologist, the historian, and anybody who might enjoy a great read on the automibile industry. Nicely illustrated. There was one glaring omission: Did Wangers maintain his relationship with John DeLorean during his Cocaine distribution trial?

A view from the inside.......2000-01-12

This book takes you back and gives you a private look at the planning and development of the car that started the whole Muscle Car Craze. From figuring out how to get this car built around GM's policies on horsepower to weight ratio, to fighting off the compitition in 1969 with the introduction of "The Judge"! How they developed the Royal Pontiac cars, and how they had to fight every step of the way with the EPA, and other government agencies! Lots of photos, and history here!

good nastalgic info and pictures.......1999-10-31

I am a big pontiac fan, i own a 1966 GTO conv. with a 455, turbo 400, 4.56 gears, runs mid elevens and i drive it on the street. my wife has a 1976 formula 400 also. so i am big on performance and nastalgia also. the book was good dont get me wrong, butnot what i thought it would be! jim wangers is a pontiac and GTO legend to us poncho guys,i thought the entire book would be about pontiacs and their great performance of the sixties, instead i read a lot of negitive things about ponchos.even the pictures like the one of the swiss cheese catalina racing the ford, he said he lost that race, come on jim, your not supposed to say that, let us guys have a little glory please! and telling of losing street races. and half the book was about jim with jobs with chevy,ford and keiser. sorry jim i didnt buy this book to read about 1977 mustang cobra twos or advertising about pacer wagons! give me a break! you really dropped the ball on this one! maybe some day another old pontiac racer will come out with a book and talk about some good times and real performance of pontiacs!!!!!!!!!!!!

Interesting perspective but not the definitive on super duty.......1999-01-01

Mr Wanger's book is an interesting historical perspective on the development of the muscle car era at the Pontiac division. It seems to be a very complete history of the development of the GTO with details that can only be known by a industy insider.My only critisim is that that while he alludes to the real bad boy Super Duties in several places he never really spells out what they were "bad to the bone dual quad, 12to1 compression ratio 421's" These were truly Pontiac's finest hour. He also does not do justice to the great Malcom MacKeller whos genious was reponsible for the development of a whole series of camshafts used at Pontiac includ- ing the Super Duties. Wangers remembers lots of racing in the book and the cheating that often took place;he does not recount the night that after bragging that he had the fastest" GTO on Woodward " he ran a race against a 1962 white Catalina with a real 421 Super Duty not a consumer version with three two's. The outcome of that encounter very well could be be deeply reperessed as the Catalina led him by a football field at a 110 mph. This encounter happened in 1967 and it might be called Wolf in Sheep's Clothing or The Night Encouner with Super Duty #3 vin#16373. All in all I would recommend this book to anyone in Pontiac history but its not the last word on on the subject.

Great Read.......2006-04-13

I had the pleasure of being in a writers' group when Michael Brown was writing his tell-all book about the instant connection he had with the legendary star. His book is deeply personal and is a tribute to the deep connections that can take place between strangers. His easy-to-read writing style draws the reader into being part of the mysterious rapport between the old lady and the young assistant who is humbled by those three magnificent days.

This gem of a book is a must-read for Dietrich fans!.......2003-04-03

Brown's book is great!! In the summer of 1974 the author was an assistant in a small summer theatre group in Columbus, Ohio. Somehow, they got Marlene Dietrich to perform for a "special pre-season gala."
Dietrich was 74 and still wowing audiences with her sultry voice and charismatic seductiveness. Brown's book describes his personal experiences with the legendary performer over a three day period.
Amazingly, Dietrich toys flirtatiously with the lackey assistant throughout the entire engagement, while heaping verbal abuse on all other theatre personnel. Dietrich compliments only "Michael" as she affectionately refers to him, as she invites him to her dressing room for wine and cheese fetes. To the troupe's astonishment, she lures him onstage nightly after each performance to present her with roses, at which time she embraces him, kisses him coyly on the cheek, and invites him to share her bows and applause. It has a surprise ending, which I won't give away.
Brown wisely waited nearly thirty years to write this backstage tell-all. From the vantage of elapsed time, accompanied by thorough research, his account possesses objectity and insight. It's a quick fun read for all Marlene Dietrich fans or for anyone who would vicariously enjoy a proverbial "fifteen minutes of fame" in the spotlight with a legend.
