Book Description
INTRODUCTION
Scandinavia - Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland - conjures up resonant images: wild, untamed lands, fjords, reindeer and the Midnight Sun; and wealthy, healthy, blue-eyed blondes enjoying life in a benevolent welfare state. The region holds some of Europe's most unspoilt terrain, and is certainly affluent by Western European standards, with a high quality of life and little poverty. But it's by no means paradise: there's a social conformity that can be stifling, and the problems of other industrialized countries - drug addiction, racism, street violence - are beginning to make themselves felt. Nonetheless, Scandinavia is an enthralling and rewarding region to explore. The larger part of the population clusters in the south, where there's all the culture, nightlife and action you'd expect, but with the exception of Denmark, these are large, often physically inhospitable countries. Rural traditions remain strong, not least in the great tracts of land above the Arctic Circle, where the Sámi peoples survive as they have done for thousands of years - by reindeer herding, hunting and fishing.
Historically, the Scandinavian countries have been closely entwined, though in spite of this they remain strikingly individual. Easy to reach and the best known of the Scandinavian countries, Denmark is the geographical and social bridge between Europe and Scandinavia. The Danes are much the most gregarious of the Nordic peoples, something manifest in the region's most relaxed and appealing capital, Copenhagen, and the decidedly more permissive attitude to alcohol.
With great mountains, a remote and bluff northern coast and the mighty western fjords, Norway's raw, often inaccessible landscapes can demand long, hard travel. Even by Scandinavian standards the country is sparsely populated, and people live in small communities along a coastline which stretches from the lower reaches of the North Sea right up to the Russian border.
The most "Scandinavian" country in the world's eyes, Sweden is affluent and boasts a social system and consensus politics that are considered an enlightened model - though confidence in the country's institutions was shaken in the late 1990s by a short-lived economic slowdown combined with the fragmentation of old alliances. Travelling is simple enough, although Sweden has Scandinavia's least varied landscape - away from the southern cities and coastal regions an almost unbroken swath of lakes, forests and hills, in which most Swedes have a second, peaceful, weekend home.
Perhaps the least known of the mainland Scandinavian countries, Finland was ruled for hundreds of years by the Swedes and then the Russians - the country became independent only at the beginning of the twentieth century and has grown into a vibrant, confident nation. Its vast coniferous forests and great lake systems have produced a strong empathy between the Finns and the natural environment which is hard to ignore. Also, though Finland is undeniably Scandinavian and looks to the West for its lifestyle, there are, historically and culturally, a number of similarities with Eastern Europe.
Travelling in Scandinavia is easy. Public transport is efficient and well coordinated, there is a minimum of border formalities between the countries and excellent connections between all the main towns and cities: indeed, it's perfectly feasible to visit several, if not all, of the mainland countries on one trip. From Western Europe it's simplest to enter Denmark, from where you can continue northwards into Norway (by boat) or Sweden (by boat or train), the two countries separated by a long north-south border. From Sweden's east coast there are ferries across to Finland, as well as a land border between the two in the far north.
As for costs, the Scandinavian countries are expensive by north European standards, but not excessively so. Their reputation for high prices is largely based on the cost of consumables - from books to meals and beer - rather than more substantial items, particularly accommodation, where first-rate budget opportunities are ubiquitous.
Customer Reviews:
better for a second trip.......2005-07-30
this guide highlights the most essential sights for a tourist, but I think it is better on a second trip to Scandinavia when one already has an idea of the lay of the land. some other guides have better maps, but this guide doesn't waste time on sights that aren't essential. Like all titles in this series, it focuses on the best places to visit and isn't afraid to say something is a waste of your time. buy it as a supplement to another guide.
not enough detail to make anyone's trip easier.......1998-07-25
Innacurate maps, poor accomodation listings and a lack of any addresses or directions makes this guide a nightmare. We threw it away a week into our trip!

One of today's most innovative sales trainers reveals how to be a consistent top producer while avoiding the dreaded cold call
It's time to hang up on cold calling, asserts Tony Parinello. The renowned sales trainer introduces proven tools and techniques that make such telephone torture unnecessary, teaching sales professionals how to master a powerful four-step process he calls "Identify, Contact, Present, Sell" to reel in new clients.
Parinello's approaches will work for anyone who loves to sell but hates the grind of "smiling and dialing." Instead, he explains how to:
- Identify and contact the very ripest prospects in far less time than via cold calling
- Rake in much more business from current customers without ever "pestering"
- Catapult up the sales chart with presentation and closing skills used by sales superstars
Customer Reviews:
I am done with Anthony Parinello forever!.......2007-10-02
I am done with Anthony Parinello forever. this the second book that I had bought that he wrote. the first was the selling to vito. both were terrible. there were bits and peices in both that were somewhat helpful, but there is no follow through on any of the ideas. Overall, these books were a waste of my time to read and were of very little help. I have been in sales my enitre career and have read some really good books over the years. these were not it!
Wish I could give it 0 stars.......2007-06-14
Sorry, this misses the mark altogether. The title of the book promises a way to stop cold calling forever, but chapter 12 is all about how to cold call. While a couple other poor prospecting choices like direct mail, are mentioned, Parinello seems to weasel around the "stop cold calling" issue by telling you to mail something first. Garbage! A call to someone you don't know and who doesn't know you is a cold call even if you've sent them a ream of mail. You want to say mailing them something first makes it a "warm call", go ahead, just don't plan on it being effective. There is also info about creating buzz, usually not a sales function. He provides an unsolicited email technique that calls for sending the prospect a postcard telling them to look for your email. First, the postcard will likely never see the desk of the addressee, it will find the trash can. Even if the right person sees it, the email he advises you to use starts out with "during the past 7 years, we have worked with 30 organizations....." That's about as far as ANYONE would read that before hitting the delete key.
Salespeople want to stop cold calling because it is painful and highly unproductive and ineffective. Using that pain to sell a book that doesn't deliver what it's title promises is distasteful and borders on unethical.
Good Basic, Simple, Accurate Advice.......2004-11-20
As I picked up this book to start reading, the telephone rang. It was a young lady, well she sounded like a young lady, and I like to talk to young ladies. Since they were going to have people in my neighborhood anyway (in my small town, if they're in town at all they're in my neighborhood), why didn't they come by and install a free satellite TV receiver. We chatted and chatted, it was a delightful conversation (at my advanced age I don't get to chat with many young ladies). Then when I asked her if she would give me a free TV set because I didn't have a TV, she didn't want to talk to me any more.
I then went back to the book. Lo and behold, the basic thesis of the book is "don't call prospects at random, only call those who are predisposed to buy from you." If the young lady on the phone had done just a little bit of qualifying - "Do you have a TV?" - she would have saved a lot of her time.
The book is filled with good common sense advice on how to narrow down the suspects into real prospects. It's the good old fashioned basics of how to sell.
If we could give a copy of this book to all the people who call, we could eliminate an awful lot of wasted phone calls.
But then I wouldn't get to talk to the nice lady who wanted to give me a free satellite dish. If I only knew her number I'd call her back and talk to her some more.

Book Description
A stunning combination of personal reminiscence and spectacular photographs of this influential modernist masterpiece.
The most celebrated work of French architect and designer Pierre Chareau, the Maison de Verre is revered by experts, acclaimed as an inspiration by many, but until now only glimpsed by a very few.
In 1928, Chareau was commissioned to build this private residence in an eighteenth-century Paris courtyard. Dominique Vellay, the granddaughter of his original client, tells here for the first time the story of this extraordinarily inventive house, an embodiment of modern building principles and methods. Its metal framework, glass-brick curtain walls, and sliding partitions and panels have made a remarkable impression on architects and designers worldwide.
François Halard's photographs pay homage to the house and its unique architectural features: the interior, bathed in daylight gently diffused by the glass walls; perforated zinc screens that rotate or slide silently on curved rails; exposed steel beams; balconies with paneled bookshelves; open-stepped staircases that permit light to penetrate; andnot leastthe house's furniture, created by the architect for his clients, and covered with fabrics by eminent contemporary artists and designers. 80+ illustrations in color and duotone.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating house, authentic book.......2007-10-12
I just received the book and had no time to read the text. The NY Times article in the summer covered the history of the house up until its current restoration. The photographs look a little as if they were from the "modern" era. Perfect perspective correction, focus on the details, rendering the home's atmosphere remarkably well. I especially like the color balance of the images. I disagree with the previous reviewer about the pictures. I can not imagine any different way to introduce this spectacular building. The black and white Polaroids (?) are a bit distracting. They may serve as spacers.
The "modern" is an important stage of the Western culture and deserves our attention.
Akos Szilvasi (Cambridge, Massachusetts)
Blah..........2007-06-15
This book simultaneously (and half-heartedly) documents the owner, the architect, and the building. The text is boring, the pictures are less than spectacular, and there is an extremely limited set of drawings placed in the back of the book as an after thought.
Overall I am extremely dissapointed with my purchase, and if you are an architect or student of architecture chances are you will be too.

Book Description
A star of two well-remembered television series, "The FBI" and "77 Sunset Strip ," Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. looks back on the many different roads he has traveled in his lifetime and recreates his most memorable experiences in the prose of a true stylist. The son of two legendary musical talents, the violinist Efrem Zimbalist and the operatic soprano Alma Gluck, Efrem Jr. grew up on an estate in the Connecticut countryside. Long before he was a recognized actor, Zimbalist broke a show business barrier as coproducer of Gian Carlo Menotti's operatic double bill, The Medium and The Telephone, on Broadway. Its critical and (surprising) commercial success led to Zimbalist's coproduction of Menotti's next opera, The Consul, also on Broadway and also with gratifying results, including the Pulitzer Prize.
Customer Reviews:
Great read.......2006-11-04
I really enjoyed this book. I just love Efrem anyway but never knew much about his life story. I thought it gave an insightful look in to Efrem's past. My only problem was that it was too short. I would have loved a bit more details on his personal life. What a gentleman he is, and a wonderful role model for young people especially in this day and age.
My hopes for a clear picture........2004-02-04
I have been a fan of Mr Zimbalist for 47 years. I was looking forward to all my questions being answered, but although this book was very interesting, it left more story out than was told.
I felt the book went together more as journal entries for family and friends than for fans and followers. Mr. Zimbalist please forgive syntac errors. R. Harris of N Jersey.
A first-rate, engaging portrait of a life well lived.......2003-10-14
My Dinner Of Herbs is the personal and engaging memoir of Efrem Zimbalist, Jr., the son of renowned soprano Alma Gluck and the acclaimed violinist Efrem Zimbalist. His own career included work in the theater, talent as a producer, a well-deserved Pulitzer Prize for "The Consul" (which he produced with Chandler Cowles), as well as numerous television specials and series. My Dinner Of Herbs is a thoroughly delightful and entertaining memoir packed with a informed and informative personal view of the Hollywood entertainment business, anecdotes of unforgettable people, and the memorable challenges that mark life, ranging from Efrem Zimbalist Jr.'s hard work to earn a Yale degree, to his military service in World War II. A first-rate, engaging portrait of a life well lived, My Dinner Of Herbs is very highly recommended reading which is especially recommended to those with an interest in Hollywood autobiographies and memoirs.
I have been in love with this man..........2003-10-04
...since I was a child. His character Stuart Bailey on "77 Sunset Strip" was so charming, gentlemanly, worldly, and gorgeous-- and it turns out he's that way in real life, too. And what a vocabulary! I had to stop to look up a few things. The text is laced through with love, affection, humor, and charm. Easy and delightful reading.
My Dinner of Herbs.......2003-09-27
Parents who have tried to raise their children in the best classical tradition will get the shaking agonies from the first portion of this book as the author mischiefs his way out of the heritage and magnificient opportunities offered him. But read on. All is not lost. One cannot take issue with the title, it is Holy Scripture. But what about this life could be called the "dinner of herbs?" Most readers will not see life as a Hollywood star as the simple and humble life. It is only in the context of the life of the classical and highly successful muscians who raised him, and his own way of taking his gifts and putting them to use, that this can be seen by the receptive reader.Absorbing, enjoying every minute of life and every relationship and communicating that joy is the message of this book.

Book Description
This book reconstructs the personal and political life of John Dudley (1504-1553), Viscount Lisle, Earl of Warwick, and Duke of Northumberland. For three and a half years (1549-1553) as Lord President of the Council, he was leader of Edward VI's minority government. His involvement in the notorious attempt to frustrate Mary's claim to the throne in favour of his daughter-in-law, Jane Grey, contributed substantially to the evil reputation which clung to him both at the time and since. He is conventionally portrayed as an ambitious, unscrupulous man, who embraced and renounced the Reformation to suit his own purposes. The fact that his father was Henry VII's detested financial agent Edmund Dudley, and one of his sons the colourful Earl of Leicester, has helped to confirm his unprincipled image. Now his reputation is being reassessed, but historians have concentrated almost entirely on his years in power - the last four years of his life. Drawing upon new research, Professor Loades looks at John Dudley's whole career and by considering the lives of his father, Edmund, and his sons, places him in longer historical perspective. A new and important interpretation of the Tudor service nobility emerges in which John Dudley is seen not merely as an overmighty subject and kingmaker, but first and foremost as a servant of the English Crown.
