Practical for college students. .......2007-02-14
I found this alright, has some good information. Nothing too special-check it out at the library, don't recommend buying.
City Chic is great if you're a recent college grad or early 20something.......2006-07-07
I thought this book would help me learn unique tips and techniques for saving money. But the book is written for the recent college grad or someone who has just gotten their first job or apartment. It's not realistic for anyone who has a somewhat decent income and is slightly older. For instance; one of the tips for getting cheap furniture is to go 'dumpster diving'. Well, I'd love to get inexpensive furniture as much as the next girl; but am beyond the point of scouring the trash of others for it. Like I said- great book for anyone whose income is basically non-existant.
City Chic.......2006-06-22
Nina Willdorf gives really good advice
on everything from decorating your living
room to going bargain shopping.
I highly reccomend this book if you liked
"The Modern Girl's Guide To Life"
Skurvy
bad fluff.......2006-03-13
the other reviewers are correct in that there are a few nuggets of knowledge in this book, but nothing that hasnt been written somewhere else. they are also correct that the budgeting, beauty, and food ideas are basically bad advice. i found this book underinformed and uninteresting. the author seems to know a smattering about everything but an expert on nothing... dont waste your time.
A great buy for the newly graduated college student!.......2005-05-24
Although many reviewers of this book have complained about it's lack of foresight in discluding financial debt such as student loans, as a recently graduated college student I can confidently say that this book is a wonderful help despite this. This is a great book for a girl who wants to save her money while still having a life! We cannot budget all of our money toward "practical" expenses, and she gives you some very astute tips to help you live beyond just paying the bills. It is very simple to adjust the budget to fit your own needs and is definitely not a "one-size fits all" suggestion. It gives some very helpful info on everything from decorating to clothes shopping to entertaining, and besides all that is so much fun to read. I read the whole book in a matter of hours and couldn't put it down. I liked this book so much that I bought another copy for a friend as a graduation gift, and I plan on referring to it often while I am figuring out how to make it on my own.

too basic/not enough useful information.......1999-04-19
I had great expectations from this book but found it very dissappointing. As a new hobbyist I was hoping that this book would give me an idea on how to set up a tank and all the information required for keeping my fish happy but the book was very vague and did not talk about the very marked variation in the different types of cichlids and their needs. The basic tank set-up did not talk about how to introduce new fish into the tank or about the numbers of fish suitable in a tank. Although it mentioned all the equipment it did not really discuss what important features a new hobbyist should be looking for when buying equipment. This book can be used a begginers introduction to Mbuna but not really worth the money.
Excellent book for beginner Mbuna fan........1998-07-07
For the beginner Mbuna keeper an easy ,readable book to start.Well organized content, good pictures, wealth of useful info. After 18 years of Mbuna keeping I still use it as a reference.
insufficient.......1997-07-15
Mary Sweeney's "The Proper Care of Malawi Cichlids" only covers Mbuna cichlids. More than half of the book talks about tank setup that is all common sense. She overemphasizes obvious points and barely covers or doesn't cover at all the important information. The pictures are not varied enough - alot of pictures of the exact same fish.
I think this book would be better titled "Proper Care of Mbuna Cichlids of Lake Malawi".
I am very disappointed in this book.

Upbeat and Irreverent.......2004-02-23
This book focuses on giving the reader easy answers for more carefree gardening. This is not the writer's first gardening book and she has a syndicated gardening column and is featured on HGTV and the Discovery Channel. Her forte is giving practical gardening advice in easy-to-read, light-hearted small doses. This book consists of 500 tips, techniques and outlandish ideas; it also contains the kind of energy and enthusiasm that makes you want to go out and implement the ideas right away.
Many of the tips and ideas are based on questions she has answered in her newspaper column. The answers are cheeky and irreverent. When asked "How much should I fertilize my trees?" the writer answers "The easy answer...Just forget it." After a couple of paragraphs explaining why fertilizing trees isn't a good idea she concludes, "Make your trees lean, mean and independent." And that illustrates the whole point of the book - don't stress over garden chores that you hate and plants that don't do well for you - gardening should be a pleasure, not a pain.
The writer's light touch keeps the reader energized and coming back for more. She uses the term "carefree" quite often and points out that, while gardening is work, we should enjoy it more and worry about it less. If a plant doesn't do well it's OK to dig it up and throw it out.
The question and answer format works well in this book, as do the many sidebars. The material is well organized and upbeat throughout.. The writer is knowledgeable and up-to-date on recent research. My quibble with this book is the amateurish interior design and the poor copy editing. The writer deserved better.

The Only Garden Book I've Read Cover to Cover!.......2000-05-08
The original blurb I read about this book was misleading. I thought it was going to be about using unusual containers. I bought it for my sister. Now I have to get her another one. I started reading it and read it cover to cover. It was great! Very practical, imaginative, and common sensical. I wish I had had this when I was actually living in Tacoma, WA. But you don't have to live in the Pacific Northwest to derive a great deal of benefit from this book. I am putting some of her suggestions to use and in 3 short weeks am already seeing the difference they make. Thanks for writing this book!
Practical!.......2000-03-30
No color photos to drool over and get distracted by--just practical advice from a real person who understands how to juggle gardening chores and joys with other parts of a busy life. Martha Stewart she is not! As in her other books, Marianne Binetti has lots of unusual little shortcuts for saving time, money and energy that are as useful for the experienced gardener as for the beginner. The chapter on roses is excellent for folks like me, who love these flowers but don't have the time to baby them. Lots of disease-resistant types are listed, as well as some really useful tips contributed by readers of her newspaper column.
Easy Read, Great Advice!.......2000-03-28
Marianne Binetti has done it again! "Easy Answers for Great Gardens" is easy to read and with great advice! I found this book potted full of helpful hints and new ideas. Marianne Binetti writes with such wit, you can't help but laugh as you learn. The clear chapter divisions makes it easy to weed through the bounty of information to target key problems or questions that you may have. "Easy Answers for Great Gardens" provides thorough step by step advice and clear instruction coupled with urging for the reader to use their own creative license to add their personal flair to any garden. This helps make it even more fun to create and enjoy the garden of your dreams. Binetti caters to those who wish to keep the creation and maintenance of their garden simple and cost-efficient without sacrificing beauty. The tips I've used so far from this book have helped me do just that! The "quick and easy" theme extends into the very format of this book. As a busy mother I am often uprooted from my cozy chair, so I found the question and answer format with highlighted tips and ideas a great way to pick up great information in the often short periods I have to read. This book would make an excellent gift for a novice gardener in need of easy to read and follow advice, or a super reading boost of inspiration for an aged green thumb looking to find new ways to enjoy the look and care of their garden. I give 'Easy Answers for Great Gardens" to very green thumbs up!

Book Description
A legend of improvisational theater, Del Close is best known for discovering and cultivating the talents of John Belushi, Chris Farley, Bill Murray, Mike Myers, and countless other comedy giants. Jeff Griggs was a student of Close's at the ImprovOlympic in Chicago when he was asked to help the aging mentor (often in ill health) by driving him around the city on his weekly errands. The two developed a volatile friendship that shocked, angered, and amused both of them--and produced this hilarious and ultimately endearing chronicle of Close's last years. As Socrates was to learning, Lenin was to communism, and Al Sloan was to General Motors, so Del Close was the force that impelled Second City and Improv. Griggs's portrait is touching, funny and captures Del's essence beautifully. --Dan Aykroyd. Already optioned for a major motion picture.

The anti-Tuesdays With Morrie.......2007-07-27
This is the story of real life pop culture Zelig Del Close (Mike Myers, L. Ron Hubbard, the Grateful Dead and Lenny Bruce all make appearances) and his relationship with his the assistant, the author of this book (and a very funny writer). Over verbal scrapping and absurd adventures Del and Jeff reach a sort of understanding and Jeff gain insight into the importance of taking risk in art, even as his "guru" rants about the usefulness of ropes as belts and the lack of bats in Chicago. Were they "friends"? Of a sort.
It's a very funny book with barbed and profane dialogue between the protagonists, but it still manages to be inspiring. Couldn't put it down.
If you have any interest in comedy or improv, especially the history of both in the United States, this book is required.
Guru: Compelling, poignant and hilarious........2007-03-16
This book was a real blessing for me. I was a student of Del's for four months during the last year of his life. He was a complex man, by his own admission, not a very likable one. This book allowed great insight into what was going on during that last year or so. Del did some very generous things for me during that time, but i always felt our relationship ended poorly. After reading this book, i felt a great weight lifted, and a greater understanding of that period of my life. I am able to forgive Del and realize there really was a method to his madness. He was an extraordinary soul and this book nails that with a few tears, and a great deal of laugh out loud escapades that prove Truth... is far stranger then fiction. My girlfriend read this book after me in one 5 and a half hour sitting. She literally could not put it down, and she never even met Del. This one is a gem that i look forward to reading again down the road. Well Done Jeff! No small feat. Thanks for setting the record straight on just who Del Close really was.
How to Read Hip: "Guru" Offers Insight to Improvisational Theatre's Enigmatic and Masterful Forces.......2006-08-26
True genius - that of visionary and driving force caliber - is rarely seen and even less seldom acknowledged during one's own lifetime. Del Close, the father of long-form improvisational theatre and the idea of improv as an art form, casts a long shadow as the central figure of Guru: My Days with Del Close, by Jeff Griggs.
In a mentor/protégée dynamic reminiscent of Ronald Harwood's "The Dresser", Griggs - a young, talented performer - finds himself entrusted with, at first, weekly errands for the slowly ailing Close. A somewhat odd pairing from the start - the ever-rebellious, outspoken and temperamental Close and the somewhat reserved, patient Griggs - find they are alike at the very core as both are insightful, driven and passionate about the work on stage. In his teachings at IO (formerly ImprovOlympic) in Chicago - along with Charna Halpern - Close taught, mentored and sometimes fought fiercely for honesty and intelligence onstage.
Through Griggs we are privy to the secrets, insights and, oftentimes, despair that accompanied a mind of such magnitude. The critiques of class work, for instance, are priceless for anyone who has taken an improvisational stage class: Take it seriously. Commit. Think of your stage partner and your relationship together, over yourself. (In the spirit of full disclosure, I have been fortunate to have studied with teachers mentioned in this book, including Jeff Griggs, who is remarkably insightful as a teacher and tremendously talented as a performer. Being taught by a mentored student of Close's gives me a kind of "Closean Pedagogical Contact Buzz" - a metaphor Mr. Close might have enjoyed. Or not.)
Deftly interweaving Close's biographical facts with the continuous and growing narrative bond, Griggs establishes a private - and oftentimes poignant - look at a psychologically complex man and we are all the wiser and more mature for it. For baby improvisers to seasoned vets to actors who may still think improvisational games are just for warming-up before acting, to those who simply love the theatre, this book is necessary because it is a part, a record, of our theatrical history.
Wonderful Book, Especially if you are from Chicago!.......2005-12-13
As I work at Second City and am studying at Annoyance, reading this book was a must. The author richly describes his days with the mythical Del Close, who some know as a genius, junkie, or all around nut job. I purchased this book from Second City and stayed up all night reading it. You just can't set it down until it's over with. Buy this book.
What fun!.......2005-09-17
I suspect that a live radio interview with author Jeff Griggs on The Sound of Young America (Jesse Thorn's podcast program) helped my enjoynent of this book. I had never heard of Del Close, but appreciated a look into the world of Improv Comedy that the book provided, along with tantalizing personal details about the life of Del Close. The relationship between Jeff Griggs and Del Close seems a treasure trove of poignantly ironic anecdotes. Imagining the material available that was cut to fit into the the book, I wanted more! I've ordered several DVDs so I can take a closer look at Del.
My compliments to the chef!

Book Description
This collection of biographies celebrates twenty-eight outstanding scholars, women and men, all late Fellows of the British Academy, who pioneered and developed the study of the early British Isles in the period 400-1100. The range of expertise covered includes language and literature (Old English; medieval Irish and Welsh; Scandinavian), history (Scandinavian; Anglo-Saxon, including the study of diplomatic and place-names), archaeology, art history and palaeography. The memoirs also reveal the personalities of these individuals, and each is accompanied by a photographic portrait. Professor Lapidge's introductory essay sets in context the formative achievements of these scholars in the development of medieval studies in the twentieth century.
