Book Description
In Wordcraft, Alex Frankel, a business writer who once briefly worked as a namer, tells the story of how five major brands got their names: BlackBerry, Accenture, Viagra, the Porsche Cayenne, and IBM’s “e-business.” Behind each name is an account of how words and language infuse the products we use every day with meaning, and how great words actually succeed in changing people’s behavior. The book is filled with stories about words that come from every corner of our world: technology, health, sports, food, business, and more.
Customer Reviews:
Read this book and learn about the naming aspect of brands and branding........2007-05-19
Short and sweet, that's how I describe this nice little book about the importance of naming your business and/or products so revenues will be maximized. It also discusses extensively the way in which companies go about thinking up great names for their businesses and/or products.
After a book is written it has to be packaged before it is sold. It can be a wonderful book, but if the cover isn't flashy and the title just right, then sales will suffer. In a way, this book is about the importance of choosing the right title for a book. A book is a product isn't it? But it also talks about titling (naming) businesses, too.
There's really no systematic method to the madness of naming, and we learn this by reading this book. But naming is VERY important just the same. Besides a book full of content on the naming industry, what we get out of this book is five stories describing how big-time successful brand names got started, three of which were BlackBerry, Accenture, and Viagra.
I regularly meet with entrepreneurs in my capacity as a volunteer SCORE counselor. And people starting a business usually don't discuss with me their new business' name. And I rarely raise the issue. It usually is not viewed as an important topic to consider. But after reading this book I think the author makes it clear that naming a business or product is a very important thing to consider when starting a business or developing a product. As a result, I highly recommend that any entrepreneur give this book a read so they can hopefully not hurt their business by choosing a "less than" name.
I would have liked the book better if the Table of Contents had had chapter titles that were more descriptive of the book's content. There are 11 chapters in this book, but known are worth naming here. 5 stars!
A Worthwhile Peek Behind the Curtain of Big-time Branding.......2007-01-17
In "Wordcraft," Alex Frankel ushers readers into the highly secretive and competitive naming industry where companies such as Porsche, IBM and Pfizer risk millions of dollars to launch brand names they hope will become part of the cultural lexicon.
The naming process is simultaneously fascinating and exhausting. Names are not hatched on cocktail napkins in sports bars. Rather, they are conceived by legions of creative types, many of whom are freelancers. Name finalists must clear myriad trademark and other legal hurdles. And occasionally a chosen name comes from an unlikely source, as in the case of Accenture, a company name coined by an employee in Norway.
Frankel, who himself was a freelance namer and launched his own naming firm during the 90s Internet boom, profiles how five new brands got their names, including Viagra and IBM's "e-business." For business people, marketers and cultural observers, Frankel's book is a worthwhile peek behind the curtain of big-time branding.
naming is not the first step in branding.......2006-03-30
If you have work to do in naming -this is such a well written book you are certain to find value from the thirteen bucks. The only danger is considering the development of a name to be the first step in brand development. The process needs to begin with strategic positions. It's not so much about words as ideas. it is in fact possible to develop a brand from the visual representation and get to the name as an implementation of the brand image...
Entertaining & insightful book.......2005-09-08
Very entertaining and insightful reading. Mr. Frankel is a master storyteller who both entertains his readers and delivers great insight into the world of naming. His first-hand experiences provide the reader with a true understanding of how companies craft a brand from a name.
A Way With Words.......2004-09-14
Shakespeare may have had us wonder "What's in a name?" but though roses named differently might smell as sweet, they don't have millions of dollars riding on how well a name works. Corporations do, and they know it, and they are ready to pay other companies big money to make sure that the names do more than the job of just being handy labels for their products. Alex Frankel is a business journalist who has actually formed a company to name things for business, and in _Wordcraft: The Art of Turning Little Words into Big Business_ (Crown), he lets us know how this strange and modern facet of global business works. A brand is not just a name but "... an amalgamation of everything that one thinks about when a particular word is uttered." If corporations are spending millions of dollars to make sure that the names that are so familiar (Prozac, Amazon, Cuisinart) can become familiar and can subtly carry extra emotional weight, it is a good idea that consumers get to know a little bit about how we are being influenced (led, manipulated) in this way.
Frankel's book is an analysis of five brand names: BlackBerry, Accenture, Viagra, the Porsche Cayenne, and IBM's e-business, concentrating on the work of the small firms that name the products of big firms for a fee. The world's first naming firm has its own apt name, Lexicon, and it was responsible for naming the BlackBerry, the handheld e-mail device of Research in Motion. "BlackBerry" is a word with an element of fun to it; it is not, by its own nature, tied to e-mail or messages. This represents in some ways a liability; another considered word, "AirWire", might hint of wireless communication, but BlackBerry did not make people think of what the product did. As a result, advertising dollars had to be spent to make the connection, but it proved to be an easy connection to make. BlackBerry was launched in 1999, and every message sent by a BlackBerry was labeled as being sent by BlackBerry, further spreading the name. It became a huge hit at least partially because of the name; some e-mail addicted executives took to calling it the "CrackBerry." The best part of the book is Frankel's depiction of the naming of the products of the pharmaceutical industry, especially the naming of Viagra. Look at that brand name: vigor, vitality, virile are all there. It rhymes with Niagara, the famous destination for newlyweds. (Frankel compares the newer drugs for ED: Cialis doesn't have any particular handle for name interpretation, but Levitra has the "vi" inside it, and it is connected to levitation, getting it up.) Viagra was a made up name that caught on quickly. Phillip Roth lauded it in _The Human Stain_. It got virile spokesmen to say it was a helpful medicine. It even entered the _Oxford English Dictionary_.
Not everything goes so smoothly. One of the chapters here examines the Denver case of the Mile High Stadium, whose naming privileges were sold, so that it is supposed to be known as Invesco Field at Mile High. The public, whose taxes helped pay for the field, didn't like the name, and the editor of the _Denver Post_ refused to allow the "official" name in the sports pages. A bar owner who led a civic protest against the name got elected mayor. There may be larger issues for brand names in the future, as memorable names are manufactured for one product after another; with all that remunerative effort by the naming companies, will we be so inundated with meaning-full brand names that each one will mean less? It is already easy to talk in corporate names; we Xerox documents, or FedEx them, or we Google for them. For now, though, the five different namer-named words examined here are getting business done; they are successfully getting the word out. Frankel has provided an entertaining sidelight on the way corporations do business now, full of juicy anecdotes from executives who take themselves and their naming mission with billion-dollar seriousness.

Amazing info. - really interesting!.......2002-10-18
This book is an essential read for anyone serious about hoof care. First Pollit describes a healthy foot, then goes on to various diseases, infections, disorders of the foot, and how he treats them. The pictures are kind of discusting (color photos of freez-dried specimen) but they are very helpful in enabling the reader to understand the text. They are all color photos and there's at least one on every page or so, often more.
Pollit's book was a real eye-opener into everything that goes on in the horse's hoof. I found the extremely detailed explanation of founder (laminitis) really interesting. There is some terminology that may be difficult for the novice to understand, as well as some in depth talk about histology, "micro-happenings" of the hoof, etc.
All together it's a great book and one of my absolute favourites about horses. Even if you don't plan to be an expert, if you read this book you can end up knowing a lot more than your barn buddies.
Very informative and well-illustrated........2001-05-05
This book offers great insights into the structure, function and proper care of the equine foot. I am very glad that I purchased and read it, and I highly recommend it for anyone who needs to know this type of information: veterinarians and veterinary students, farriers, and horse owners should especially find this a valuable resource.
GREAT.......2000-02-10
This book is GREAT for all horse people. It shows what neglict can do to a poor innocent horse and it also shows a lot of accidents and repairs that are made. It is worth the money to buy this book, especially if you are doing anything in the equine industry.

Good Book.......2005-09-21
This book was first printed in England in 1985, so don't expect any information more current than that. It is not a price handbook either. What it does provide is a high quality history of the development of the watch from the Middle Ages with a fair deal of technical explanation. For one unfamiliar with how watches are made, some of the terminology will be difficult. The book also provides some examples of how to research a watch and how to engage in the business of selling watches. Unfortunately, information on starting a watch shop in England in the 1980s is not very useful for most American readers of today, and the research is only moderately interesting. But as an historical introduction to watches it is a top-notch overview, suitable for the technically inclined beginner. The photos are of high quality.
Book Description
Whether you simply find watches fascinating or you have an old watch that you are curious about, this book is the one for you. This exploration of the evolution of the pendant/pocket watch is divided into centuries. Each century explores what was happening in the world and how these events and fashions influenced watch making. It includes information on makers, their marks, and even the serial numbers for the American watch movements. Filled with clues, it will help you determine when a watch was made, how it was made, what it is made of, and what makes it tick. The amount of photographs of timepieces in this volume is impressive - hundreds of watches are featured in beautiful color photographs. Cases, dials, and movements are included in the photographs - this book encompasses the entire watch. 2004 values. AUTHORBIO: Known to collectors as 'the jewelry detective,' Jeanenne Bell has written books on pendant pocket watches, as well as jewelry of all types. She is an antique jewelry dealer with retail stores in Kansas City, Missouri, and has collected hairwork jewelry for over 30 years. REVIEW: This book will have collectors racing to the bookstores. It is an all-new revised edition, this time organized alphabetically by model name and description for ease in identification. Well over 1,000 photographs are included.

Not worth the money.......2007-07-19
I was disappointed with this book. There appears to be no organization and the information does not appear to be accurate. I expected much more and this book did not deliver.
Collector's Encyclopedia of Pendant and Pocket Watches.......2007-04-08
My 22 year old son is starting a collection of pocket watches and he has enjoyed this book. He uses it when he goes online to fine new treasures.
It helps him know what to look for.
Nice book !!!.......2005-08-22
Great pictures, but I have aspected more from this book about movement's and calibres explanation. If you have just started to collect pocket watches, than this book is for you.If you need some details for movements and calibres you will be at the start of your expertise !!!
Nice photos with little substance.......2005-08-19
Here's an example of a book that should never have been produced. The author is obviously misinformed and quite frankly, ignorant, regarding watches. The book is riddled with incorrect information regarding watch descriptions, including blatantly wrong jewel counts, movement descriptions, and the repititious "very fine and rare", "fine and lovely", "very fine and very rare", ad nauseum. The author constantly includes "micrometric regulator" in descriptions of pocket watches, that have NO micrometric regulators! The book is attractive, and has some excellent photographs, but, at best, this is a book that needed an author with some watch "smarts".
A very good overview of watches development.......2005-03-02
The book is divided in 5 chapters, each one covering one century of watch development. Each chapter deals with case, movement and decorative procedures development. In the end of each chapter you will find a full range of color fotos of watches of that period. The pictures are very beautifull, but not unique: you will find them in The Sandberg's Watch Collection Book. I think that the book should earn just 3 stars, just because it does not have "unique" pictures. However, the pictures were unique for me, since i don't have sandberg's book.
Customer Reviews:
The definitive up-to-date book on watch I.D. and prices.......1998-04-13
This is in its 18th edition. For the authors watches are their liveliehood and their passion. The number of photos is unexcelled although there is always room for improvement, the text at the beginning gives the beginner the knowledge and the glossary at the end a quick reference for terms. It is heavy on pockets but, also chock full of pictures on wristwatches and their prices, the industry almost standard (the market rules) For the money a hard book to beat if you buy more than one watch a year will save the buyer much more than the price of the book many times over. This IS the book to buy without question - universal among hobbyists and collectors alike.

The Watch
ASIN: 0887408737 |
Book Description
Twentieth century Russian wristwatches are too costly for many native buyers, but they are still inexpensive for Western Collectors, and are becoming extremely popular. Watch faces commemorate all the great moments of Russian and Soviet history-from Yuri Gagarin's space flight to the Summit meeting between Gorbachev and George Bush-and celebrate Russian culture with images of native costumes from Chechnya to the Ukraine. Collectors have long clamored for a definitive reference and this new book will satisfy even the most avid enthusiast, with photographs of over 500 watches manufactured in Russia and the USSR during the second half of this century, and explanations of their styles, workings, and manufacturers. Poljot, Wostok, and Slava wristwatches are covered, along with a sampling of pocket watches, deck watches, and marine chronometers. This book is a must for serious collectors in the growing field of Russian timekeepers.

Introduction in contemporary Russian timepieces.......2000-12-07
Between 1990 and present, there has been a tremendous surge in collecting Russian and Sovjet timepieces, especially in Europe. Still, complete and comprehensive documentation is elusive. So far, two authors have attempted to categorize and document the subject in books.
The book by mr. Levenberg covers mostly the era from 1970 through present. Thereby, the highly interesting timeframe between the 30's and the 70's is overlooked, limiting the usefulness of the book to collectors of fairly recent pieces. If this is your area of interest, I would recommend you to purchase this book. First it is translated from German to English. Furthermore, the quality of the information is of acceptable level, but sometimes lacking interesting details. The horological information (mostly brands and calibers) covers the timeframe nicely. Additional information, e.g. Cyrillic translations are interesting extras for collectors. I have found the price guide to be unrealistically high when used at auctions or watch fairs, so use it with caution.
If you are interested in a broader view on Russian and Sovjet Era (pre 1991) watches, I would recommend to also consider the 2 books in German language by mr. Ceyp. These hardcover, full color books document a wider scope. Volume 1 'Faszination Russische Uhren' covers about the same era as the book by mr. Levenberg but shows more detail, while volume 2 'Faszination Sovjetische Uhren' covers the less recent history in abundance. I would rate these books with 4*. Still, I have not found the the ultimate, definitive book on the subject Russian and Sovjet timepieces.
Excellent Photographs of Various Russian Timepieces.......1996-11-18
A wonderful book showing the wide range of timepieces that the
Russians produce, and which are now becoming available on the open
market.
Profusely illustrated and well documented.
Includes a short, but very complete, table of cyrillic to english for the various
markings one comes across.
The only downside - buy two copies. The binding on mine fell apart
from so much use.

Time Museum Catalogue of Chronometers
ASIN: 0887403034 |
Book Description
CHRONOMETERS - Marine and pocket chronometers, pocket watches with tourbillons or carousels form, in the large family of clocks, a small group of very precisely running timepieces with little sensitivity to external influences, such as variations in temperature. In the text, the author takes up the fascinating development and history of the chronometer, portrays the most important manufactures in short biographies, and reports on the great voyages of discovery in the 18th Century that proved the utility of the chronometer as a navigational instrument. The illustration section, divided into five sections on the basis of historical and technical standpoints, portays some 350 items in the antique trade and at auctions or seen in private collections, with special emphasis placed on illustrations of their movements.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent reference.......1999-12-30
Many fine photographs. Excellent representation of chronometer makers. Typically provides many examples from each maker. Chapter organization is fine, however, the focus is highly technical. This is a great reference work primarily because of the large number of detailed images. However a big limitation is the lack of an index. This makes finding a particular maker's examples very difficult.

Fascinating historical almost-a-mystery.......2005-11-19
When Maurice Francis FitzGerald, 6th duke of Leinster died in an asylum in an Edinburgh suburb in 1922, the outcome turned out -- half a century later -- to be less than straightforward. In 1967, in Marin County north of San Francisco, another Maurice Francis FitzGerald died at the age of eighty, having claimed for years to be the 6th duke. And when the 7th duke, Maurice's brother, died in 1976, Leonard FitzGerald, son of the California Maurice, laid claim to the dukedom. Was he in fact entitled to it? Did Maurice fake his death in 1922 and remove himself to America? The man who died in 1967 knew a great deal about the boyhood of the rightful duke, perhaps more than he reasonably ought to have known, and it's true that stranger things have happened. Estorick, who knows how to pursue genealogical research, delves deep into the 19th and 20th century history of the FitzGerald family before coming down firmly against the California claimant, but it's the journey to that conclusion that the reader should find fascinating.
