Exellent. I've bought several books in this genre, but "The Dog Lover's Companion to New York City: The Inside Scoop on Where to Take Your Dog (Dog Lover's Companion to New York City)" is the only one that's easy to read, addresses exactly what you're looking for (the best time for you and your dog) and then get you jazzed to try the exciting destinations listed.

3 out of 5 stars Nice asset for dog lovers; however, definitely double check sites.......2006-08-14

Living in an area where there aren't many dog friendly places, yet within commuting distance of NYC, I thought this would be a good book to add to my collection. It has valuable resources like maps and contact numbers for the places they list. There are a variety of places you can go to with your pet.

The reason I gave this book a 3 instead of a 5 is it lists Eisenhower Park as allowing dogs on leash. I have lived near this park for most of my life. To my knowledge they had never allowed dogs. I called to see if they changed their policy - so happy that a nearby place would allow me to bring my pet. Sadly, they confirmed never in their history have they allowed dogs within the park and you can receive a big ticket if you do.

When I contacted the books publisher, I was told that was why the caveat of checking first is in the book. The caveat is nice, but I was still frustrated they listed this source when it was never an option.

I have not had a chance to check on the other sites listed yet.

So in summary, good for dog lovers living near or visiting New York City, but do your homework before you bring your pet.

"A very powerful account of a significant aspect of recent American military history."
          --Journal of Military History

"Westheider has researched very thoroughly-an effort including extensive interviews with Vietnam veterans-and he possesses a rare gift for narrative that makes the result of all this research eminently readable. A highly desirable addition for both African American studies and military affairs collections. . . . [an] invaluable history."

          "Highly recommended."
          --Library Journal

"James E. Westheider persuasively argues that black soldiers were the key factor in bringing about a more egalitarian military. This book significantly advances our understanding of both race relations and armed forces."
          --Charles Moskos, Northwestern University

"With this meticulous investigation of how institutional racism operated in the military of the 1960s and 70s, James Westheider provides us with a model for making sense of institutional sexism in the Tailhook-era military."
--Cynthia Enloe, author of The Morning After: Sexual Politics at the End of the Cold War

The racial tensions that have long plagued American society exist to a much lesser extent in the military where the bond of common pursuit and shared experience renders race less relevant. Or so conventional wisdom has long held.

In this dramatic history of race relations during the Vietnam war, James E. Westheider illustrates how American soldiers in Vietnam grappled with many of the same racial conflicts that were tearing apart their homeland thousands of miles away. Over seven years in the making, Fighting on Two Fronts draws on interviews with dozens of Vietnam veterans--black and white--and official Pentagon documents to paint the first complete picture of the African American experience in Vietnam.

Westheider reveals how preconceptions and petty misunderstandings often exacerbated racial anxieties during the conflict. Military barbers, for instance, were often inexperienced with black hair, leading black soldiers to cut each other's hair, an act perceived as separatist by their white counterparts. Similarly, black soldiers often greeted one another with a ritualized handshake, or dap, as a sign of solidarity, the unfamiliarity of which threatened many white soldiers and was a source of resentment until it was banned in 1973.

Despite ample evidence of institutional racism in the armed forces, the military elite responded only when outbreaks of racial violence became disruptive enough to threaten military discipline and attract negative attention from the civilian world. A crucial addition to our understanding of Vietnam, Fighting on Two Fronts is a compelling example of the new military history at its finest.

          4 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview.......2004-11-23

The book is an excellent overview of the issues facing African Americans in Viet Nam. Westheider views the racism facing African Americans in the military at that time as being the result of both personal racism, primarily from a military heavily populated by whites from the southern US, and institutional racism, both deliberate and unintentional, from the military hierarchy. Westheider shows an interesting evolution of the attitude that African Americans toward the military. Before the Viet Nam war, African Americans held a generally positive attitude about the military and viewed the military as less racist than society in general. By the end of the war, African Americans viewed the military as more racist than society in general and suspected that the military was, in fact, a tool used by society to persecute African-Americans. He uses a number of statistics to make his case. For example, in 1964, thirty percent of the population of Alabama was African American and yet there was not a single African American on any Draft Board in Alabama. There is information on racial violence in the military, racially motivated "fragging" of officers and political and ethnic oriented organizations in the military. The book is an excellent overview and is a good introduction to the subject. I enjoyed the book but I finished the book thinking that there is much more of this story to be told

          5 out of 5 stars A very good introduction.......2004-02-08

It's impossible to tell the story of the Vietnam War without taking sides, so Sidney Lens doesn't bother. He was (and remains) against the war for moral reasons, depicting the US as an imperialist power that stood in the way of Vietnamese independence after the Vietminh defeated the French. Lens traces the history of US involvement, including the lies surrounding the Gulf of Tonkin, the rise of the peace movement, the spread of the war into Cambodia and Laos, and the Strategic Hamlets that the US military used to control the Vietnamese peasants they were supposed to be protecting.

It's surprising how much important information he covers in just 100-odd pages. The result is an excellent introduction to the topic. If you haven't read about the Vietnam War, start here. You'll get through this book easily, and you'll see the war for what is was. After this one, try Marilyn Young's "The Vietnam Wars," which covers the same ground as this book, but in much more detail.

Jim Hayward was the first to write a specialised work on Lovebirds in England. He has to my personal knowledge extensive first hand experience of the genus.

Good advice on all relevant aspects of keeping these birds.

Since it was written many new mutations have appeared which are not covered.

A few improvements in management techniques have been developed since publication, but following this book will give you an excellent start.

5 out of 5 stars A Good All Around Book for the Beginner.......2004-12-14

As another reviewer stated, this book would be a good place for a beginner to start their lace adventure. The author begins with a little lace history and an explanation of the tools used in lace making. She then goes on to provide a tutorial on each of the basic lace techniques. Using this book and following the author's directions, I have been able to make my own lace "cookie" type pillow and a cylindrical lace pillow. I have worked through a number of the tutorials and did not find them "too wordy". :)
The examples are meant to show you how to read a pricking and how that translates into the basic lace making motifs. I think the examples do that job quite well. If you work through each of the tutorials, you will start to build your lace "vocabulary". The lace that results is not anything more than a sample of a technique, but the Author has provided pictures of modern laces as well as some spectacular older laces to inspire your own original designs.

I have learned a lot from this book and continue to use it as a reference for my own designs

                    4 out of 5 stars A good, solid beginner's manual.......1999-11-11

The strongest point of this book, in my opinion, is the wonderful gallery of modern laces shown to inspire the new lacemaker. I really don't care for most of the patterns in this book, but that is no reason why you would dislike them. Still, the diagrams are clear, the instructions are fine (although a little wordy on occasion), and there are instructions for making several kinds of pillows. This is a good, solid reference which I would reccomend particualrly to the new lacemaker on a budget.

This is a complete guide to gardening with protective shelters that encourages both beginning and experienced gardeners to add months of gardening pleasure at small expense. With a little under-cover gardening know-how, Pacific Northwest gardeners can take advantage of our mild climate to produce flowers, herbs, and vegetables throughout the year.

The book was helpful, with ideas for extending the growing season in the Pacific Northwest with several simple designs for cloches and coldframes. However, it is noteable that almost half of the book is devoted to greenhouse gardening in and designs for a "solar" greenhouse. Other northwest gardening experts I have read (ex., Steve Solomons, "Gardening West of the Cascades") state that "solar" greenhouses do not work in our perpetually cloudy winter climate, greenhouses must be all glass.

2 out of 5 stars A bit too much attitude.......2007-07-10

The photographs were excellent -- just looking at them makes you want to know and like these people.

The narrative brought me up short. I'm one of those (apparently) rare individuals who believe American values aren't so bad that we should feel grateful to foreigners who come here and teach us how to live.

Most Americans feel a certain sense of good fortune for having been born in the United States. The narrative in this book leaves the impression that "Americanos" don't think America is so great, have no intention of "being assimilated" (in other words, becoming Americans), and feel they by rights already own the place anyway.

I'm no xenophobe, but this book left me with a strong bad impression. Maybe I should have given it 5 stars. Maybe it's a book every American ought to read carefully.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Tapestry of Latino Life in the United States.......2002-04-10

As the largest growing ethnic group in the United States, Latinos/Hispanics have made inroads in many fields due to their strength, organization, and family values. Although differences among Latinos are as common as differences in other groups distinguished by a common language root (e.g., Slavs, Arabs, Romance languages speakers, etc.) the common struggle of all nationalities that are found in this classification is the same: success.

Edited by one of the greatest activists and advocates for Latinos all around the world, actor Edward James Olmos, "Americanos: Latino Life in the United States" is a collection of beautiful photographs and stories of Latinos throughout the United States. From Mexican-Americans in California to Puerto Ricans in New York City, Olmos and a team of other editors have produced a book that perfectly and respectfully captures the beauty and realities of Latinos all around. Available in hardbound and paperback editions, "Americanos: Latino Life in the United States" is a must have for Latino/Hispanic Studies students/enthuasists or for anyone who tuly appreciates cultural photography. The book, which was accompanied by a U.S. museum tour of photographs featured in the book, is truly a milestone for a community that has risen from a long sleep and awakened to become the most dynamic and promising group in the Americas.

If I can use two words to describe this book, I would use "moving" and "beautiful." It's a must have book in your library, especially if you're Latino.

After being honored with the presence of Mr. Olmos at the Penn State University this past November, I have only grown to respect what our culture has done and continues to do. This book exemplifies what we were, what we are, and what we are to become. I have only pride in my heart and a joy in my sould for what we have been capable of doing in this the United States of America. I hope that everyone has a chance to look at this book and, like I did, see themselves in these pages.

5 out of 5 stars Latino Success Story.......2005-12-22

The author worked his way up from a poverty-stricken childhood in San Antonio to become an advertising executive in the upper echelons of the business world. Henry Cisneros felt the book "captures the essence of being Latino in the U.S. today. It is a book that will touch many people deeply".

                      1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2002-07-03

The book follows the typical self-help recipes: positive attitude, self-appreciation, hard work, etc. But it starts flopping when it attempts to bind those recipes with sociocultural subjects.

For example: the Spanish spoken in certain regions is, according to Mr. Sosa, inherently servile (by the way, not so with English or Portuguese????).

Negative behaviors, he essays to explain through ... anthropology and anti-hispanist slogans.

The only real asset of the book is that, when you are done reading it, you are left totally determined to succeed in life, if for nothing else, to prove Mr. Sosa that renege one's cultural inheritance is not the way.

5 out of 5 stars Read it if you are a minority!!.......2000-12-05

Mr Sosa has a brilliant message. You can succeed even though you may belong to a minority or 'disadvantaged'. Although, he shares the Latinos' experiance and the Americano dream, his story is applicable to anyone who has persistence and determination to succeed. I live in a city state where most of us come from immigrant origins and have thrived. Mr Sosa's practical and sound advice in the book is something you can immediately put to use.

                            Book Description

Useful Toil engages freshly and directly with the "ordinary" people of the 19th century. John Burnett has assembled 27 telling extracts from the diaries and autobiographies of working people--wheelwrights and stone-masons, miners and munition workers, butlers and kitchen maids, navvies, carpenters, potters and ship assistants to list only a few. The men and women who speak in these pages concentrate on their working experiences, though they also write about their homes and their fears.

Burnett's broad and sympathetic introductions focus and contextualize the wealth of material. These stories provide the antithesis of "great name" history, yet they constantly touch on human experiences that are timeless and universal.
