              Book Description

In 1873 Catherine Currie, her husband and their first child took up an uncleared pioneer selection in the forests of west Gippsland.

The daily life of hard physical work was punctuated by the births of children and the arrival of neighbours, and gradually the unforgiving forest was transformed into productive land. All this Catherine recorded faithfully in her diary. But, as the years wore on, her early optimism turned to disillusionment and sometimes to despair, and the diary became a moving private confessional.

This is a simple and moving story, bringing us into direct, vivid and personal contact with Catherine Currie. It is also a superb study in both autobiography and biography. Above all, it will give great pleasure to those many readers who delight in the subtlety of plain English.

                  Book Description

This compelling book is an extended case study of the social and legal ramifications of a homicide in a Tiwi community. The author gives a detailed account of the life of the victim and the events surrounding his murder, and describes the cycle of mortuary and seasonal rituals with their elaborate songs and dances. He also looks at the dramatic changes in Tiwi society over the last 100 years, and examines how the Tiwi have responded to the intervention of Western culture. In many areas, he finds, they have adapted and retained their own value system. Venbrux’s account of the investigation and trial following the homicide provides timely and important insights into the issue of Aboriginal People, traditional law and the Australian criminal justice system. Through the strong narrative thread of this book we are presented with an incisive picture of a culture amid conflict and change.

                      Book Description

From Urban Enclave to Ethnic Suburb focuses on the migration, settlement, and adaptation of Chinese and other Asian immigrants and their impacts on the transformation of metropolitan areas in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. These stories of the interactivity of Asian "people and place" in four nation-states are framed within the larger context of spatial and social patterns, migration, acculturation/assimilation, and racialization theories, and emerging landscapes in the inner cities and suburbs of metropolitan areas like Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Toronto, Vancouver, Sydney, and Auckland. The book's primary arguments center on revisioning traditional "assimilationist" models of the Chicago School with the context of today's evolving metropolis. Other key elements include immigrant and refugee policies, new theories of ethnic settlement, and urban and suburban immigrant landscape forms.

Nine chapters document the experiences of Asian immigrants and refugees—rich and poor, old and new. Their communities vary from no identifiable residential cluster (Vietnamese in Northern Virginia) to multiple residential and business clusters in both inner city and suburbs (Koreans in Los Angeles, Chinese in Toronto) to the largest suburban Chinese residential and business concentration (the San Gabriel Valley of suburban Los Angeles) and the "high-tech Mecca" of the U.S., if not the world (Silicon Valley), whose growth has been inseparable from workers, professionals, and entrepreneurs of Asian descents who are often local residents as well.

Rich in detail and broad in scope, From Urban Enclave to Ethnic Suburb is the first book to focus exclusively on the Asian immigrant communities in multiethnic suburbs. It effectively demonstrates the complexity of contemporary Asian immigrant and refugee groups and the strength of their communities across the Pacific Rim. It will be welcomed by a wide range of readers with interests in Asian American studies, urban geography, the Chinese diaspora, immigration, and transnationalism.

It is simply a matter of knowing which quadrant to work from and when. Have you ever wondered . . .· What is the difference between an employee and a business owner? · Why do some investors make money with little risk while most other investors just break even? · Why do most employees go from job to job while others quit their jobs and go on to build business empires· Why, in the Industrial Age, did most parents want their children to become medical doctors, accountants, or attorneys . . . and why, in the Information Age, are these professions under financial attack? Have you noticed that many of the brightest graduates from our universities want to work for college dropouts . . . dropouts such as Bill Gates, Richard Branson, Michael Dell, and Ted Turner? Dropouts who today are the mega-rich of society. This book will answer some of these questions and also assist in guiding you to find your own path to financial freedom in a world of ever-increasing financial change. It is a book written for . . .· people who are ready to move beyond job security and begin to find their own world of financial freedom · people who are ready to make deep professional and financial changes in their lives· people who are ready to move from the Industrial Age to the Information Age It's time to get out of the rat race. 'Rich Dad's CASHFLOW Quadrant' shows you how.

This book opened my eyes. It seems that everything he says is common sense, but the way he taught it really inspired me. After reading his book I decided to stop being an employee and move to the self-employed quadrant. I started my own corporation and I now have enough money to start investing in Real Estate following another of his books. I highly recommend this book to everybody.

This enchanting photo journal is the first pictorial book on Himalayan flowers covering the whole area from Pakistan and northwestern India through Tibet and Nepal to Bhutan. Large photos of diminutive flowers set against the backdrop of the large-scale surroundings of the Himalaya are supplemented by brief captions blending technical data from the author's field notes with personal observations. The result is a book that is as informative as it is inspiring.

                                              5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2003-11-10

This book contains the fruits of ten years of trekking in Nepal at high altitudes, in the most inhospitable terrain, during the monsoon to photograph the flowers of the region in their natural environment. This has to be done during the monsoon, when rain and sleet makes streams impassable and mist shrouds the mountains because that's the only time the flowers bloom. And what flowers they are. Their adaptation to the rocky cold world is often quite amazing. I expected to find pictures of primulas, rhododendrons, meconopsis - and these are all here. The cover shows a meconopsis that just about knocked my socks off. But there are other flowers too, some of which create a nice warm tent to encourage pollinators to visit. These and other adaptations are part of the fascination of this book.

You'll find in the book 108 beautiful flower photographs, often taken while lying on the wet stony ground after a wait of hours or days for the rains to let up and the sun to shine. Each picture is accompanied by brief field notes about the plant and they are arranged in taxonomic order. Why are there 108 photographs? Because that is the number of beads on a Tibetan rosary. The photographers sense of this being a spiritual quest as well as a scientific quest is demonstrated in the precision and beauty of the photographs.

Some of the flowers are familiar to us. There's a bergenia and a geranium not unlike those in my garden. But then there's a relative of the rhubarb that looks like a stack of cream puffs and can grow up to six feet tall. Inside the cream puffs the temperature is five degrees warmer than the inside - certainly attractive to pollinators in the Himalayan cold.

Toshio Yoshida has given us a rare treat in this book, giving readers vivid images of plants we may never see against a backdrop of the glaciers and peaks of the Himalayan mountains. His deep understanding of the place and the environment and his synthesis of the complexities of spiritual, artistic and scientific approaches has resulted in a book that can be appreciated on many levels.

Portraits Of Himalayan Flowers by Toshio Yoshida (botanical photographer, amateur botanist, and Associate Researcher at the University Museum of the University of Tokyo) is a beautifully presented compilation of natural photography and the compilation of ten years of travel. 108 gorgeous color pictures showcase the wondrous beauty of plants that correspond to the 108 beads of the Tibetan Buddhist rosary. This is an incredibly interesting book full of photographs showing the plants in their native environment. Toshio Yoshida did a fantastic job with all 108 full color photographs that are in the book.

By getting down on the ground and looking up at the plants you will get to see a viewpoint that is rarely offered in the world of plant photography.

Each photo caption contains the botanical name of the species as well as a wonderful description. While I'm not a big fan of photography books, the photos in this book definitely made me sit up and take notice.

There are plants in there that I had never seen before which were so unusual that they made me want to find out more about them. If you like unusual plants that are brightly colored or plant photographs that are above the average then you will want to acquire this book for your library.

                                                Book Description

At age 10, the genius of Orson Welles was evident at the boarding school he attended in Madison. A newspaper chronicled his accomplishments with the headline: "Poet, playwright, actor — and he's only 10."

From former Soldiers Grove teacher Agnes Moorehead to Milwaukee's Zucker Brothers, Wisconsin has produced more than its share of film stars and author Kristin Gilpatrick profiles them in Famous Wisconsin Film Stars, the second book in the Famous Wisconsin series. This book focuses particularly on the Wisconsin ties of natives who later went to fame and fortune in Hollywood.

The actors include Spencer Tracy, Gena Rowlands, Fred MacMurray and Frederic March. Tyne Daly and her father, James Daly, also a film star, were from Wisconsin Rapids. Although some stars shunned their Wisconsin roots, Fred MacMurray visited his Beaver Dam hometown after he became famous.

I bought this book because it included a chapter about the wonderful Carole Landis. I also really enjoyed reading about all the other Hollywood stars who were born in Wisconsin. This book is very well-written and I learned a lot about stars I didn't know much about before. There aren't many photos but overall it's a great book for movie fans.

I never knew there were so many stars from Wisconsin. This book names these famous film stars. It gives examples of their work and biographies of the actors themselves. It was interesting to find out about the stars and their ties to Wisconsin.

                                                  Book Description

This is a highly original reappraisal of the role of Piers Gaveston in English history and of his personal relationship with Edward II. It challenges the accepted view that Gaveston had a homosexual affair with Edward, and reassesses the main events of Gaveston's career, including his exiles from England and the scandal over the alleged theft of royal jewels. Pierre Chaplais draws his evidence from documentary and narrative sources including unpublished record evidence. The conclusions are fascinating and often suprising. The unusual features of the famous royal charter of 6 August 1307, which granted the earldom of Cornwall to Gaveston, are discussed at length for the first time. Special attention is also paid to the King's personal intervention in the drafting and sealing of documents relating to Gaveston, and to the history of the great seal of absence used while Edward was in France in 1308. This unique criticism of the documentary evidence by a leading diplomatist and historian of the period reveals the reality behind the myths surrounding Piers Gaveston, and makes fascinating reading.
