Recycled Content in a New Package.......2004-12-15

The 2004 Odyssey guide to the Yangzi River seems much larger than its predecessor, and credits a collection of contributors, including authors Judy Bonavia, Richard Hayman, Kevin Bishop, May Holdsworth, Paddy Booz, and photographer Wong How Man.

While at first this may seem like an impressive array of contributors, closer inspection reveals that both the text and photographs are a hodgepodge of earlier works cobbled together into one book. Much of this content was originally produced in the 1980s, and is now terribly outdated, in some cases by about 20 years.

The photos credited to Wong How Man in the 2004 Odyssey guide to the Yangzi actually first appeared in Wong's 1989 book, "Exploring the Yangtze," and many of othese photos were actually taken as early as 1985. What's worse, the 2004 Odyssey guide repeats the mistakes of Wong's 1989 book in mislabeling or not labeling the identity of his photos. In one prime example, the same photo of a brick pagoda occurs in both the 1989 and 2004 books. In the 1989 book the photo was simply labeled as a nameless pagoda somewhere on the Yangzi River. In the 2004 Odyssey guide an attempt has been made to identify its name and location, but unfortunately the information that has been provided is in both cases completely wrong. It is neither in Zhenjiang, nor is it an Iron Pagoda, which should be obvious from even looking at it. One has to look to Eric N. Danielson's Nanjing and the Lower Yangzi (Singapore: Times, 2004) in order to find a photo of this same pagoda correctly identified by both its location and name.

Likewise the text seems cobbled together from many out of print and outdated sources. May Holdsworth's contributions come from her 1987 guide to Jiangsu Province; Kevin Bishop's text comes from his 1989 guide to the Grand Canal entitled China's Imperial Way; and Paddy Booz's content comes from her 1987 guide to Yunnan Province. Even Judy Bonavia's text dates from the first edition of this Yangzi guide published way back in 1985. This makes most of the written content 15-20 years old. The only content that dates from within the last five years is that written by Richard Hayman, whose specialty is only on the Three Gorges section of the river. Even this content may date from an earlier guide to the gorges authored by him in the year 2000. A photo of Captain Hayman standing in the wilds of Shanghai's Pudong New District beneath the Jin Mao Tower skyscraper is not very impressive evidence of any recent explorations of the Gorges.

In conclusion, it's not clear if any of the content in Odyssey's 2004 Yangzi guide dates from more recently than four years ago, and most of it is nearly 20 years old. China has changed considerably since then, making this less than useful as a practical guide of what to see today.

Fun reading, some much better than others.......2004-10-15

The curse of the electronic age, SPAM eventually forces its way into the life of anyone with an email address. While there are many books and articles about how to reduce this problem, Jonathan Lund has taken his own personal war back to the spammers. Instead of just deleting the emails he responds to them. Of course he doesn't respond quite the way the spammers expect. His responses are an attempt at humor and wit that often falls short of the mark, but then again at times is absolutely hysterical.

Particularly funny is his correspondence with people who are naive enough to accept his satirical comments at face value. His correspondence with textile manufacturers and the infamous Nigerian money launderer is brilliant.

With writing that covers the whole range from a poor attempt at humor to laugh-out-loud funny, to bizarre, the reader is sure to find several emails entertaining no matter what your preference in humor. The Spam Letters is a recommended read.

Experience a vicarious victory!.......2004-10-03

Have you ever wanted to "strike back" at the spammers and the con artists? If so, you'll enjoy The Spam Letters by Jonathan Land (No Starch Press). This is a funny read...

This isn't a book that is going to give you any technical insights or strategies for dealing with spam. Actually, it *will* give you a strategy... yank their chains... HARD!. Land has taken various spam emails he's received (or that have been forwarded to him by co-conspirators) and let his warped creative writing skills loose. Some of his efforts were more for his own benefit, as it was obvious that the return address was not going anywhere that was real. But his real classics were with real emails who decided to scam or spam the wrong person. His exchange with the fabric wholesaler in the middle east is funny. The series with the stainless steel broker is just plausible enough to be real (and the broker played along well). The best efforts were reserved for the Nigerian scam artists. His scenarios of playing off scammers against each other, asking for bigger cuts, and playing the role of both financial advisor and committed asylum patient gives any reader who has received one of these emails a vicarious thrill.

This is an excellent recreational read, but I probably shouldn't have opened it. I'm just warped enough to think I could do this too... :-)

This should be required reading........2004-10-02

This is one of those books that everyone should read - so that we can all vicariously through Jon Land's dive into the land of spammers... and in agreement with others - catching him on NPR is more than a treat - its an addiction waiting to happen (think chocolate).
For the geek and for the not-so-geekish, this book serves as a living history of the frustrations we all have felt when dealing with SPAM. Mr. Land just found a great way give some of that frustration back to the SPAMMERS - and to give us geeks something to chuckle about when reading about V|AGRA or the fortunes that await us in Nigeria... and we can take comfort in knowing that we're not alone in out frustrations.

Description:
Unsolicited promotional emails, commonly termed 'spam', are more than familiar to the average email user. However, to date, spam mail has largely been ignored by the linguistic community. The present paper addresses this research gap by presenting a genre analysis of 121 medical spam mails. The analysis concentrates on the macro-textual level, and reveals that unsolicited promotional emails undoubtedly belong to the promotional genre. However, a contrast of previous research on offline promotional letters shows differences between the conventional patterns underlying such letters and those underlying spam emails. These differences are explained with reference to the particular contexts of use, spammers being, namely, forced to deal with a high level of competition from other spam mails, a bad reputation, an extremely fast pace of communication, the risk of being filtered out by spam mail filters and also legal restrictions.

ESSENTIAL for home security.......2005-11-20

For those seeking to protect their home with a dog, this is an essential book. I would recommend ignoring some of the more ad hominem reviews, most of which are deeply factually flawed (Duet helped a Schutzund expert co-author a book on the field, but the Duets are NOT Schutzund trainers).

This book has been used as a training guide for police departments, security firms, etc., and those of us who know the reputation that K-9 Companions (The Duet's training company) has cultivated in Southern California and around the nation over the past 25 years know that this is the first place a layman should turn in order to get a foothold on the security training process. Heartily recommended for all readers.

Not very helpful..........2005-09-16

This book is a waste of time - it's written by a couple of low level schutzhund trainers trying to pass themselves off as protection guru's. Well....they aren't.

Way too much space spent on training for plain ol' obedience but almost nothing on protection.
The protection training concepts that were included were old and very out of date.

This is mainly a "wannabe" book, save your money on this stinker.

I have read many books on dog training, but this one I would rate as one of the best in print. I was a novice at the terms of dog training when I went looking for a protection dog, but now I can say I am a responsible and informed dog handler, ready for anything we can learn together. The authors use layman's language so it is eay to understand.They cover all the subjects needed to train the dog, from choosing the right puppy, to feeding it, to responible ownership, and to training it to the highest capacity the dog can work.All the commands are fully explained with good pictures to suppliment.This is the book to own if you want to be a skilled handler to help your dog do its job best:protecting you and your family.

Until now, no source book was available to show the marks used by manufacturers, factories and decorators from the beginning to the present. Marks on German, Bohemian and Austrian Porcelain 1710 to the Present includes more than 3,300 marks, many of them previously unpublished. More than 1,300 porcelain products producers and decorators are identified, including marks which American importers had applied.A special chapter shows more than 650 marks of Continental and American origin which can be confused with other famous marks. Here are aids in identifying imitations, fakes and look-alikes, and revisions of marks which have been incorrectly identified until now. In all cases, the time period in which the mark was given to enable dealers auctioneers the opportunity to determine the age of a porcelain piece.

A Helpful Resource For Porcelain Marks.......2004-04-13

I bought this after buying several neat pieces of porcelain on Ebay and becoming curious about the history of the maker's marks on them. I was surprised that the book is in two languages, English and German (each page has both English and German text). It took me a little fumbling to get onto the organization, but once I did, it was wonderful in identifying everything I looked up. There are no pictures, just accurate line drawings of the maker's marks. Each is clearly identified by manufacturer and date. It allows you to look up marks by type, for instance "crown" or "anchor" or "anchor with words". One part of the book further gives a very brief summary of the type of wares each company produced (organized by country). It has more marks than any other reference book I have ever looked at, it is probably the only one you need for European porcelain. It also lists present day marks from currently producing companies.

The best book on this subject for the moment !.......2001-06-05

Finally a book that goes further then showing some pictures...there ain't ! So all the place left is pure 100% usefull and revealing information. Not only useful for antique but also for younger, almost actual, porcelain. Indispensible for identification of the manufacturer and the age of a piece of German, Bohemian or Austrian porcelain. The information is seperately ordered by marks, by manufacturers or by names ! I don't know how I should go on without it...

Knowing how much of an impact Billy Barty had on my life, it was amazing to see how many other peoples lives had experienced the same thing. Billy Barty touched the world in a way that not many are able to. I don't see how anyone could read this book and not find themselves walking away with more than they came with!

A friend of mine recommended this book because I enjoy reading biographies. I was familiar with some of the roles Billy Barty portrayed over his career, but was amazed to learn the full extent of his professional achievements. To achieve so much, and give so much, with all of the challenges he personally faced. Amazing. I loved reading the stories written by all of the famous people he worked with. "Within Reach" was a most enjoyable and inspirational read. A true gem.

When I first received the book "Within Reach" I only knew Billy Barty as an actor, star, entertainer and etc., but after reading "Within Reach" it enlightens you to much more! It's simply amazing all the things that Billy Barty accomplished in his life-nothing held him back-no matter what he reached out for, Billy attained. "Within Reach" shows how it is possible, no matter what handicaps or problems we have in life, that if we have the right attitude nothing can hold us back! Billy Barty certainly had the right attitude and much more! He had a kind heart and a wonderful way with people. "Within Reach" shows how a man with a big heart, compassion for people and goodness in life is really what makes a man big! Billy Barty was the biggest of all men because not only was he a great star, great friend, great husband and father but he leaves a legacy behind to all of us that says "Go ahead if you want something in your life you can achieve it-there's no obstacle that you can't overcome-Well, it's "Within Reach"!

JUST THE FACTS.......2003-09-10

This is a wonderful bio of William the IV. It gives great detail without to much depth. The pictures add a lot more to his story when a yank like myself can see the palaces, places and what the people looked like. I was please to see that this Anne Somerset did include the story of the Fitzclarences who are sometimes omitted for what seems to me as a PC move. They did a great job of explaining the Reform issues and just of showing that Midshipman Guelph, Prince William, the Duke of Clarence, and King William IV, no matter the title he was just your average man in a extraordinary situation.

A Grassroots History of the American Civil War, Volume IV: The Life and Times of Colonel William Stedman of the 6th Ohio Cavalry - Richard J. Staats. Stedman was a well-known abolitionist who was quite active in the Underground Railroad, and was president of the Western Anti-Slavery Society. He fought in many cavalry battles on the eastern front, and at one time he commanded a brigade of Union Cavalry. His service record was outstanding, and the official records of the war verify his bravery. He also served in the Ohio State Legislature. During the Civil War, the soldiers were free to write to their hometown newspapers, and in some cases their relatives and friends furnished the letters to the editors. A number of those letters appear in this work, to illustrate and fill in the narrative of the 6th Ohio's record under Stedman. Letters between the colonel and his family add warmth to the text. The typical reminiscences of Civil War veterans in their later years often had a rosy hue. The author of this work has used such material sparingly and only as needed. The accent is on what they and their contemporaries thought and expressed at or near the time they lived it. The result is a lively biography of "a man of convictions," and a well-written narrative of the military and political battles of that turbulent time. Rounding out this book are maps and illustrations, footnotes, a bibliography and a name and subject index. 2003, 416 pp., bibl., illus., maps, index, paper.
