2 out of 5 stars not the best choice,perhaps.......2001-03-17

When my sister, and neice and myself went to Egypt in 1997, we took three guide books. The Fodors, Lets Go, and the Rough Guide. We threw the Fodors, and Lets Go out in Luxor, and used the Rough guide. We loved Egypt, and are planning another trip, Culture Shock would have been a good book to have read first. If you go to Luxor, go stay at Abul Kassem's place, just show up, its always empty. We also loved the Three Corners on the beach at Hurgada. Now i am dreaming again .......

5 out of 5 stars Worth the money.......2001-03-08

In true Fodor's style this book is worth the money. It doesn't contain everything you need to know, but it definitely gives you a good idea what to go see and what not to see. If you are looking for a great pocket reference while you are in Egypt, this is the way to go. I investigated a lot of different books and this was by far the best one.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect travel companion for a 1st time traveler to Egypt!.......2000-04-29

Fodor's Pockeet Egypt, 1999 is a perfect travel companion for the first time visitor as well as return travelers. The illustrations, maps, critical advice and information about going to the middle east is easily understood and helpful. I actually felt much more comfortable going on my trip after reading Fodor's detailed guide on customs, food, cultural differences, hotels, and tour information. It helped me plan the timing in Cairo, Luxor, and especially venturing south to less traveled areas. Fodor also helped prepared me for the costs of the tours, times to go on excursions as well as food and lodging. "This book was my little bible" while touring this country full of history. I teach the 6th grade. My social studies curriculum "came to life" with Fodor's help while exploring the splendors of "Egypt"!

        Book Description

This is appropriate for a first course in agricultural marketing. It has a managerial orientation in terms of branded products, industrial marketing, and commodity marketing. International examples are used to provide a truly global perspective to the food system. A driving philosophy for success in the food system is Total Quality Management, where all members--producers, processors, manufacturers, distributors, retailers, and food service outlets-understand that they are both suppliers and buyers and that the final quality of the consumer product depends on the actions of all people in the food system. To work together successfully, all food system members need a basic knowledge of the different areas and different types of marketing: commodity, industrial, food service, and consumer, which this book offers.

          Description:
During 1999-2003, the US Food and Drug Administration reported a total of 1307 processed food product recalls, most of which were avoidable. There are many areas of the processed food supply chain where significant exposure to risk exists. Additionally, there are systems that can be used in-house at manufacturing facilities, such as hazard analysis and critical control point (HACCP) and radio frequency identification (RFID) that can be very beneficial in recall avoidance. Effective employee training is another key point for consideration. In the event of a recall, a company must be prepared in advance with a detailed crisis management procedure. Companies should consider recall insurance, depending on their size and market dominance. Public relations strategies are critical in surviving a recall. Care must be taken to connect to the consumer and communicate a strong message. Findings from analysis suggest potential reduction of product recalls through recommended preventive measures including the use of HACCP and RFID systems.

            Book Description

As his first book, The Animals in My Life, so successfully demonstrated, Grant Kendall is a peerless storyteller. Anyone who read that book and was sorry to see it end now has an all-new collection of stories to savor. Once again, Kendalls ear for dialog and eye for local color do not desert him. A myriad of animals, their owners, friends, andin some instancestheir persecutors are the focal point of the twenty-five stories included here. A host of characters, human and otherwise, are sure to evoke a range of emotions in readers. Stories about cats, dogs, goats, horses, and birds abound. And the cow, perhaps the only creature Kendall loathes, figures in several hilarious tales.

This book lists nearly EVERYTHING! And I'm assuming when the third edition comes out, it'll cover the few things missed here. The values are as accurate as any other price guide (i.e. to be taken with a grain of salt), but the best part is having such a completely comprehensive list of not only dolls, but also fashions, accessories, licensed items, even pogs and postcards!

This is THE one book you MUST have if you collect in the broad Barbie doll family. They are few photos, but there is the most comprehensive listing of every Barbie & Friends you could ever find. When I'm bidding in auctions, this is the book I look to for the REAL value of the item. Get it...or you could overpay on your Barbie items. Highly recommended!!

This is a wonderful resource for anyone interested in true gardening. The photos are lovely! So many of the plants are used in herbal medicine (read of their history within the pages of this charming book) or are flowers your grandmother had in her garden by the back door.
Katherine has such a terrific knowledge of plants that, without being at all stuffy she can let you know where and how to use them. It's not a dry read at all. Get this book and you won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Rabbinic Judaism and Esoteric Religions in Antiquity.......2003-01-24

I used this book for an independent study I did about year ago on Hekhalot and Merkavah mysticism. (A rough outline: Hekhalot and Merkavah mysticism is a religious movement that took place within the world of Rabbinic Judaism beginning somewhere in the 2nd or 3rd century. Its main focus is the ascent of a rabbi to the highest heaven so that he can worship God with the angels and perhaps even see God, which in some sources gives him a certain power to affect change here on earth.)

This book focuses on the relationship between Judaism, Mandaeism, and Gnosticism as a way of painting a more detailed picture of Hekhalot and Merkavah mysticism. Deutsch uses a "comparative approach" to studying the texts produced by these different groups; the result is that Hekhalot and Merkavah mysticism looks quite syncretistic. Such an approach certainly gives insight, but it also causes a bit of confusion about the nature of Hekhalot and Merkavah mysticism.

Firstly, the benefits of using such an approach is that it paints a picture with wide brush strokes: the reader is likely to get good idea of major religious trends within the world of antiquity. Deutsch has three appendices that deal with Islam, Christianity, and Hermeticism that further illustrate what seems to be a general religious idea - that there are mediators between God and humanity that are above man but nonetheless divine. (Anyone familiar with the Christological controversies in the early centuries of Christianity will find much here that parallels those debates.)

These broad strokes also imply that there was a large amount of syncretism between different religious groups, with ideas from completely different religions permeating each other. Certainly, any historian of religion would agree that this is, indeed, the case: religions do influence each other. The question of "how much do religions influence each other?" is where much of the debate comes in.

This, then, is the downside to Deutsch's approach. Although in the last chapter he surveys much of the prior research on Hekhalot and Merkavah mysticism and notes that the authors of its texts were quite familiar with Rabbinic law and lore, it still seems like Hekhalot and Merkavah mysticism were quite syncretistic. Some influence is certainly possible and even likely, but isn't it also possible - and perhaps far more plausible - that despite these influences, Hekhalot and Merkavah mysticism arose out of streams that were already developed within Judaism such as apocalypticism? Indeed it is, and although Deutsch mentions these, it still seems that in the Hekhalot and Merkavah mysticism owes less to its own religious heritage than it does to other dualistic religions.

This book should be read with other works about Hekhalot and Merkavah mysticism in order for the reader to better understand Deutsch's contribution to the field. Think of this book as being like a chapter: it reads well when read with all the other chapters in a book. Otherwise, it is likely to make little sense.

            Book Description

At a time when the term child star is more a curse than a blessing, Danny Bonaduce stands as a symbol of success and inspiration. Now, the co-star of the 1970s hit television series The Partridge Family, one of the most popular sitcoms in syndication, reveals how he not only survived the hazards of success at an early age, but lived to joke about it. The real Danny is as cheeky and irreverent as the pre-adolescent Danny Partridge he portrayed on television, and he tells his story with outrageous wit and refreshing candor. He talks about stepping into the spotlight at a painfully young age; about life on the set of a hit TV show; and about the relationships he formed off camera with the shows stars and executives. He recounts his life after cancellation and the quick slide from star to tabloid fodder; the numerous ways he medicated himself against the hurt and disappointment; and bottoming out financially and emotionally and even, briefly, criminally. But Danny Bonaduce bounced back, and here he tells the incredible story of his journey to personal redemption, including a one-night stand that led to a lifelong commitment, a new family, a successful career, and a new lease on life. As hilarious as it is touching, and told in Bonaduces own irrepressible voice, Random Acts of Badness is a story about a Hollywood prodigy that concludes not in tragedy, but in triumph, and about a career and a life that are not ending, but just beginning.

            5 out of 5 stars Great.......2006-12-14

Loved this book. Very well written and worth reading even though it was published 5 years ago. Could not put it down!

4 out of 5 stars Gotta love Danny.......2006-03-15

I am a great fan of Danny Bonaduce, and I love him and Gretchen on their show Breaking Bonaduce. As for this book, it was really good, and held my interest, but it seemed unfinished somehow. I'm not sure what it was, but when I got done reading it something was missing. All in all it was very entertaining. He has had a crazy life. Gotta commend Gretchen for staying through it all.

            4 out of 5 stars A VERY Candid Self-Portrait. .......2006-03-06

A fascinating book. Bonaduce pulls NO punches in this auto-biography about the first half of his life. It is really funny but has it's poignant moments too. You find out what made Danny the person he is, by the imagery of his development into a child star to the downward spiral of drug-addicted has-been to his (apparently temporary) redemption. I think it demonstrates what we are starting to realize about Bonaduce now that he's on Reality TV. He knows his limitations and his weaknesses and he's honest about them, but he just can't control those self-destructive aspects of his own personality.

            4 out of 5 stars Bravo Bonaduce.......2006-01-29

Danny Bonaduce is up to his usual antics. Somehow he masterfully made this book appear as if he is talking to you. He never seems to take himself too seriously, which is probably good considering all that has happened in his life. Yet, he also never passes blame when it is his own fault for what has happened in his life.
From the Partridge Family, to bad times, to his radio career, Bonaduce covers it all with honesty, detail and most of all humor. He discusses his wife and their relationship at length and it comes across as warm and loving, while always being endangered with Danny's outrageous behavior.
While reading this, you can't help but like and root for Danny.

4 out of 5 stars What happened before Breaking Bonaduce appeared on television.......2005-11-15

This book came out before the more recent show, Breaking Bonaduce, and it certainly reveals how clever, honest and funny Bonaduce can be - in print. Perhaps it caught the public's attention and saved his flagging celebrity. It was certainly an entertaining read..at the time.

But that was then and it seems that Bonaduce has had to go to more extreme lengths to maintain the public's attention. That includes his most recent decision to appear on a reality show, Breaking Bonaduce. Unfortunately, having watched nearly every episode of Breaking Bonaduce, I can't help but wonder at where his ego ends and the truth begins. It has given me a different perspective on the book, if only in hindsight.

In the book (just as on the television show) he SEEMS to be honest about his drug addiction, his rehab, and his contrition. Far from being a braggart, he actually disparages himself, leading one to think that perhaps he is facing up to unpleasant realities - and making some serious changes in his life.

Perhaps he truly was doing so when he wrote this book. But my opinion of him has dropped more than a few notches since the recent show appeared and I saw his willingness to expose not just himself but his wife, his children and a therapist (who seem clearly baffled and out of his element at times) to his erratic behavior - and "erratic" is putting it nicely.

It is one thing to reveal himself on the written page but quite another to expose his family to public humiliation. The show has gotten plenty of attention, but the type that usually accompanies car wrecks- you can't HELP but look... but mostly in horror. I just hope this is a low point in Bonaduce's checkered career and that he can pull himself back from the brink before it is too late.
