Book Description
INTRODUCTION
The Lake District is England's most celebrated, most visited and most hyped scenic area. Tucked into a bulge between the industrial cities of northwest England and the Scottish borders, the small region - just thirty miles across - is literally irresistible to the twelve million visitors a year who pour in to experience its famous lakes, picturesque villages and alpine landscape. To many, the lure is of a misty-eyed English past - quiet country lanes, ivy-clad inns, agricultural shows and sheep-dog trials - while others seek to tick off English superlatives, including the country's highest mountain (Scafell Pike), and its largest and deepest lakes (Windermere and Wast Water respectively). The sundry pastoral images could hardly be better known, whether bolstered by the siren words of the Lake Poets or embedded in the minds of the nation's children who grow up with the lakeland tales of Beatrix Potter, Arthur Ransome and John Cunliffe's Postman Pat.
It's hard to think of a region in Britain with a similar breadth of scenery - wild fells to walled grazing land, glacial lakes to forested valleys, steeply pitched mountains to tumbling waterfalls - in such a small area. Tourist numbers are concentrated in fairly specific areas and, even on the busiest of summer days, it's relatively easy to escape the crowds by climbing to the higher fells or exploring more remote valleys. There are parts of the region, particularly in the north and west, where tourism is still decidedly low-key. Choose to come in the early spring, late autumn or winter - when magical crisp, clear days often enhance the natural backdrop - and even the most beaten paths and over-visited sights can be refreshingly uncluttered.
The scenery is, of course, the major attraction and if hiking and the great outdoors isn't your bag, it's tempting to say that you're on the wrong holiday. The central lakeland crags-the birthplace of British rock-climbing-still lure climbers from far and wide, while the lakes, paths and valleys support an entire industry of adventure activities, from kayaking and windsurfing to pony-trekking and off-road biking.
However, the Lake District has more than enough to satisfy less boisterous interests. The region's literary connections are justly famous, though you may be surprised to find that it's not all Wordsworth, Coleridge, Southey and De Quincey: writers and poets as diverse as Sir Hugh Walpole, Norman Nicholson and John Ruskin have left their mark, and their houses, haunts and places of inspiration form the backbone of many a lakeland literary trail. There's a long industrial history, too, which manifests itself in scattered mining works, scarred quarry sites, surviving mills (one still working at Stott Park) and a couple of old railway lines - Ravenglass to Eskdale, and Lakeside to Haverthwaite - now converted to tourist use.
The Lake District has one of the country's highest concentrations of classic rural pubs and inns, many of them former coaching inns dating back several hundred years. Locally brewed beer is widely available, and a circular walk and a pint in front of a roaring fire at the end of it takes some beating for an afternoon out. Stay overnight and you can experience another Lake District speciality, the country-house hotel: some of the grandest specimens in England occupy exclusive lakeview positions. Finally, in summer the region hosts many of its annual sports, festivals, shows and events, providing a fascinating snapshot of traditional rural life.

Carry it with your Ordinance Survey Maps.......2004-08-13
I spent two weeks walking around Windermere covering ground haunted by Wordsworth, Coleridge, De Quincy, Keats, Beatrix Potter, Arthur Ransome, Donald Campbell, and others, and this book told me where my time and pounds would be well spent. It never let me down. The next time I go I'll carry the latest edition.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent read!.......2007-10-12
Just when you thought you couldn't improve a masterpiece, Miller Heiman releases an improved version of Strategic Selling. It's a must read!
Soar Despite Your Dodo Sales Manager
Great for large complex sales.......2007-04-29
The (new!) strategic selling technique is optimal for large complex sales - how do you sell the implementation of an enterprise software system, or the outsourcing of customer care? These types of sales require more than product innovation, advertising, or dropping a pair of football tickets off to the buyer. They require an in depth understanding of the customer organization, and both what drives change, and what stops it. The methods here aren't an "Everywhere for everything" panaceas - you don't need them to get more shelf space for Cheerios - but the are great for organizing attacks on the big sales.
Excellent Sales Strategy Approach.......2007-03-02
A real strategic approach to building business relationships and getting sales that have the best chance of delivering a win-win for both you and the client.
I "dumbed down" to a one-page crib sheet that I try to follow in my consulting business. It's worked very well so far. That said, if your target market is small businesses (25 or less employees), while the strategy will work, it may be too much of an effort up front for the potential pay-off down the road. If your target is companies of 2,000+ employees, this is a must.

Great Process For Sales!.......2007-02-25
This book helped me understand the four major buying positions within an organization; Coach, User Buyer, Technical Buyer and Economic Buyer. Once I understood the roles each of these play during a complex sale, it helped me concentrate on the position and not the personality. This book helped me understand the objectives of each buying position and gave me pointers on how to take advantage with the proper communication techniques. I highly recommend it for all sales people who are trying to sell to large corporations.
Outstanding book.......2006-11-03
This book really helps you to find all the right people to help make your sell successful. I recommend it to every sales person.

Book Description
The melancholic beauty of the British landscape was a central influence on the life and work of the Romantic poets. Not content to merely depict rural life or point out nature’s splendor, the Romantics explored the natural world’s effects on the mind, memory, and emotions. Through their poetry and other writings they showed the power of the imagination to transform the environment.
In The Romantics and the British Landscape, Stephen Hebron focuses on five major poets—William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Percy Bysshe Shelley, John Keats, and John Clare—and reveals how their relationship with the natural world changed over time and according to their purpose or mood. Stunning portraits, original manuscripts, and watercolors, including works by J. M. W. Turner and John Constable, complement Hebron’s analysis of the Romantics’ literary output. Indispensable for anyone seeking to understand the context of the Romantics’ impassioned response to their surroundings, Hebron’s book is an inspiring guide to their world.

Customer Reviews:
A Great Book To Keep and Revisit.......2006-11-04
This book has had a lasting influence on me, and I've admired Dixie Carter every since I first read it. She really has a gift for writing with warmth, humor, and a heart full of down-to-earth wisdom. As a woman, her book made me feel "normal" again, and for that I'll always be grateful! Dixie has a knack for writing with vibrance and her stories are so interesting you don't want the book to end. I so hope that she will come out with another book.
a wonderful surprise.......2000-02-11
always on the lookout for "bargain" books in bookstores, i chanced upon dixie's book being closed out. liking her anyway in "designing women", i knew i would enjoy her book, but i was not prepared for my fascination. by the time i was finished reading the book, i felt i knew her--she was someone i could drop in on for coffee. she echoed my own sentiments of missing the people being polite to each other, and of loving discipline seldom taught to children today and more than once made me nostolgic for the rich childhood she had--the things that are possible for children and which every child deserves. she writes the way she speaks which is a joy. the book is never dull and in truth, you do not want it to end. i hope she determines to write another book. i want the first copy.
Dixie Carter mesmerized me!.......1999-08-10
After I started reading this book I could not put it down. Dixie covers almost every subject, from beauty tips to romance. Her Southern charm adds so much to this book. I highly recommend this to everyone.
Dixie Carter kindles the flame of beauty in our lives........1998-08-26
I do not think that Dixie Carter has ever been one of *People* magazine's "Fifty Most Beautiful People in the World", and it is a crying shame. Carter has in spades what gets people on that list: all-encompassing beauty. In *Trying to Get to Heaven* she, in a sense, shares that beauty with us. She tells us about the people who have inspired her, instructs us on behavior(such as yoga and decorating), reveals to us some of her most heartfelt memories, and articulates her beliefs about beauty. Beauty, to her, is the guiding principle by which life is well-lived. By showing us how beautiful her life has been, and by doing it in such a lyrical, richly-detailed, entertaining, and, sometimes, humorous way, she sets an excellent example.

If you are a member of the Labour Party, this book is for you. If you have any sense of economics and the demands of the world economy you will quickly realize that this book is a bunch of bunk. More liberal/labour whining about how "Unfair" the world is
A skillful demolition of Margaret Thatchers record.......2000-12-01
Ian Gilmour delivers a coup-de-grace to any sort of credibility Margaret Thatcher has post-Pinochet. She is shown to be dogmatic and narrow minded - and the mud sticks. Gilmour relentlessly chips away at the lies and half-truths of the Thatcher years - leaving the bare bones of failed policies and missed chances. Thatcherism is exposed as a historical anomaly - with no basis in the Conservative party of the UK but more in common with the US republican party. History has shown this book to be correct in a lot of it's assertions, particulary where it states that Thatcherism in fact never had a hold on the hearts of the majority of the British public - a fact born out by the speedy marginalisation of her since then. This book is one to make British right wingers squirm - and quite justifiably so. It is time to set the record straight, without the help of the Murdoch press.

Book Description
This book documents and analyses the decline of the UK coal industry from the start of the Thatcher administration through those of Major and Blair. Over that twenty-year period employment in the industry fell by 95 per cent, the UK's reliance on coal shrank, and union power was demolished. The political agenda over two decades remained implacably anti-coal. Yet, as Parker demonstrates, the actual process of decline was driven by a set of political and economic coincidences and by chance.
