    2 out of 5 stars needs a little color.......2007-09-18

I'm sure some of the information in this book may be outdated by now (published in 2000) as things do change, but I bought this book thinking it would be second best to actually taking the drive, which is a little beyond my means to actually do. So I wasn't expecting 100% accuracy as much as I was hoping for more scenic photos. In fact, the few that are included are quite small, and black-and-white! This could have been a much better book with color photos.

2 out of 5 stars Good on the towns, not much in between.......2002-10-21

This is basically a list of towns in the order that
you hit them driving Hw101. Its OK if thats all
you want but don't expect much guidance on things
off the beaten track, or indeed anywhere outside
    a town!

I found the Rough Guide Pacific Northwest book
    much more useful.

5 out of 5 stars Help in enjoying our Pacific coast line.......2000-10-09

This book has up to date, factual, interesting and on target information about the Oregon and Washington coast lines. The chapters each describe a community and its weather, events, attractions, lodging, restaurants, and more.

If you are thinking about exploring the coastal areas of the Pacific northwest, make sure you have this volume with you.

              Book Description

Originally published in 1909, when in the Preface it was said: "Until the past ten years a study of Chinese court life would have been an impossibility. The Emperor, the Empress Dowager, and the court ladies were shut up within the Forbidden City, away from a world they were anxious to see, and which was equally anxious to see them. Then the Emperor instituted reform, the Empress Dowager came out from behind the screen, and the court entered into social relations with Europeans."

"For twenty years and more Mrs. Headland has been physician to the family of the Empress Dowager's mother, the Empress' sister, and many of the princesses and high official ladies in Peking. She has visited them in a social as well as professional way, has taken her friends, to whom the princesses have shown many favours, and they have themselves been constant callers at our home. It is to my wife, therefore, that I am indebted for much of the information contained in this book."

Isaac Taylor Headland was a Professor in the Peking University.

                        Pricing Without Fear:
From cover to cover the book "Pricing Without Fear" takes you on an amazing journey showing you how to make money utilizing your sewing skills while pricing your services effectively to earn a profit.

Author Barbara Wright Sykes shares a wealth of how-to tips on pricing your goods and services. This dynamic entrepreneur knows what she is talking about. She holds nothing back as she shares her knowledge and expertise. After reading this book you are sure to earn a profit.

Pricing Without Fear is a well rounded resource covering everything from why consumers spend to how to buy supplies in bulk. One of the nicest features is that the book covers a broad range of sewing specialties, not limited to but including: Bridal

                        Children's Apparel

                        Wearable Art and much more!

During an interview Barbara shared her motivation for writing Pricing Without Fear:

Pricing without fear should be second nature…but it is not. What I have found is that of all the concerns sewing professionals have, pricing seems to be number one.  My motivation for writing this book was to reassure sewing professionals that they can have a healthy business, and not be afraid to price for profit.

When I penned my first book,  The "Business" Of Sewing, I covered the basic pricing methods, and gave illustrations. I briefly addressed overcoming doubt, fear and procrastination, which I later devoted an entire book to. Once I became more aware of how many people suffered from the fear of pricing, I recorded an audio entitled, Take The Fear Out Of Pricing, complete with exercises and worksheets. However, I wanted a tool that addressed pricing in more detail. One that any sewing professional could use no matter what field of specialty, thus came Pricing Without Fear.

                        2 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings.......2007-08-01

There was enough good material for me to decide to keep the book but I was also disappointed. The book was chock full of grammatical and other types of errors. For instance, the photographs of "featured guests" were labeled with one name on the outside cover of the book and another name on the inside pages. There was a lot of repetition.

I liked the success stories of sewing business people. I liked the advice and short business biographies of the "featured guests." I liked the comparison of different methods of pricing.

What I had hoped to get from the book was more detailed advice for what to charge for particular services in different parts of the country. I mostly wanted a reference for the average time it takes other people to perform certain sewing jobs. There were some excerpts from price lists but they were mostly out of date, or not dated, or the region of the country was not specified, or the list was not complete, so I felt that I couldn't adjust for current economic conditions. The book did not meet my expectations in this regard.

                        5 out of 5 stars Excellent Tool.......2007-04-06

This book was excellent! It has examples of price list and how the price was broken down per item. The formula's are easy to use and comparable to the industry. I have started to do alterations for others and it is helpful to have a breakdown of incidental charges that I was not sure of how to charge. I was very impressed that it features all kinds of alterations, including home domestications, hand beading as well as custom dress making.

5 out of 5 stars Just What I Was Looking For.......2007-02-13

I have a start up drapery workroom business in my home. This book gave me just what I was looking for: priciples as well as practicle guidelines.

5 out of 5 stars Pricing Without Fear.......2005-10-06

It is a book for everyone who wants to know how to price their products. Saturated with examples of real successful biz. I would recommend the book.

5 out of 5 stars Earning what you truly deserved.......2005-08-27

I'm french speaking and I am leaving in Montreal. Few years ago I had read « the business of sewing » by Barbara Wright Sykes, and I realized that this would have been my purpose in life, to become a professional seamstress. However,I felt that I needed more technics to do so professionally. So at the age of fifty, I am back to school and I am studying design & patternmaking, I will be done in a few more months. I have a few little sewing contracts to help me survive in the meantime. These little contracts are in home decor, made to measure pants, skirts, etc. However, I have realised that I was not able to charge the right amount for my services, especially to my relatives and my earliest friends at work. I had trouble charging the amount that I truly deserved. In reading this book, it helped me to calculate the right amount I should receive for my work, as well as how to explain to the customer how this worked in the custom making clothes business. It helped me tremendously and I am recommanding this book to everyone.

It is a wonderful book telling about all the hills and valleys and walking trails of England. You haven't seen an English country side until you have visited England. Highly recommend this book. Nice pictures and information.

2 out of 5 stars Close, but no..........2001-06-18

The English countryside has been divided into numerous districts, based on everything from soil type, landuse, tourist features, history, etc., so their distinctions are sometimes difficult to understand. This book contains dozens of short essays, one per area, and most of the essays are very interesting.

However, I found the book as a whole extremely difficult to use because there is no coordination between the maps at each end of the book, showing and numbering each land use area, and the text or the smaller detailed maps included with each short essay. Those essays, with area maps for each, are impossible to relate to other areas of the country using the end-page maps. It is very frustrating to try to find specific areas of interest to the reader, and then to further find adjacent areas, or similar areas of interest.

The essays are interesting as discreet little descriptions of an area in England, but as a whole, I find the book just a series of essays. The index is sketchy; so many, many towns mentioned in the essays, or of independent interest to the reader, aren't in the index. And, believe it or not, with the detailed maps containing numbered areas, in front and back, absolutely no use is made of those numbers in the essays, either in the text or individuals maps! So when you read an essay that interests the reader, you can't find that area in the end-paper maps, so you can't relate essays to the larger, overall picture of England.

And, if for further example, you read of an area, and you want to read about a neighboring area, there is no way to look up anything and just turn to it. All you can do is start thumbing through the whole book, or keep reading at length, hoping you can put together areas of interest on your own.

This book needs a considerably better index, and the absence of a relationship between the individual essays and the larger maps showing numbered areas is an astounding failure. Some editor did a terrible job of making this book readable and useable in relationship to an interest in England.

I have detailed AA maps of English roads and attractions, and even with those, this book was difficult to use in relationship to actual places to visit.

I found the book terribly uncoordinated, and the relationship between the maps and essays, and the overall maps of England, is non-existent.

That said, the individual essays are interesting, and there are numerous good photos of places, but it is nearly impossible to relate individual efforts to the whole.

With this book, I keep thinking of those old, hackneyed phrases: "close, but no cigar," "so near, yet so far," etc., but they are quite apt in this case. A better index and some use of the areas numbered in the maps of England with each essay would have turned this book into a winner. It just doesn't make it.

                                Book Description

The study of James Cagney's screen persona is far more than a profile of a great beloved star. It is a meditation on over a half-century of social history. From Cagney's early days to such successes as Yankee Doodle Dandy, Schickel follows the star's spectacular career. A great dancer who became a great actor, James Cagney could play George M. Cohan or Public Enemy No. 1 with equal ease and conviction. This book explains how. (Richard Schickel is chief cinema critic of Time Magazine.)

4 out of 5 stars Not a Biography! Not really........2005-01-22

Richard Schickel published this book in 1985, a few years after making a documentary about James Cagney that was released around the time of the actor's last theatrical feature, "Ragtime." Schickel interviewed Cagney for the documentary as "Ragtime" was being filmed in 1980, and he based this book on that and other conversations with the actor late in Cagney's life.

Although this long essay contains a great deal of information about Cagney's life and film career, Schickel did not set out to write a conventional biography. His main topic is the development of Cagney's screen persona, the "tough guy" character that Cagney (and Warner Brothers) created, played, and refined in more than sixty film roles. Schickel is interested in the way that this cinematic character reflected many of the country's social concerns during the 1930s, Cagney's first decade in the movies, and after. He traces that development from the actor's first major starring role in "The Public Enemy" (1931) through his last major gangster role in "White Heat" (1949). He also shows how that persona emerged, or was altered, in other Cagney films, notably "Yankee Doodle Dandy" (1942), for which Cagney received his only Academy Award. Schickel notes that Cagney was a little ahead of his time when, in 1943, he left Warner Brothers and established his own production company (and made a rather undistinguished string of pictures); and he traces how Cagney's character fared in the late 1940s and 1950s, a time that saw Cagney's star fade until his "retirement" in 1961. The actor came out of retirement in 1980 to appear in "Ragtime" in a small but crucial role; his last film was a rather dreary TV movie made in 1984, by which time Cagney was so frail his lines had to be dubbed by another actor doing a Cagney imitation.

Schickel also is interested in Cagney's reluctance to talk about his film career in creative terms (save for a handful of fondly remembered films, such as "Yankee Doodle Dandy"). Cagney seems to have placed very little value on the work he did in the 1930s, on the character he created, perhaps because Cagney's "tough guy" was so at odds with the real man. Like many actors, Cagney did not intellectualize about what he did on the screen; his art was instinctual, visceral, not cerebral. To Cagney, he was lucky song-and-dance man who found a relatively easy way to make a very good living when he was in his early 30s. With few exceptions, each role he played was "just a job" to Cagney, no matter how much those roles enthralled and thrilled his admirers.

One might say that this book is less about Cagney and more about Schickel's own reaction to Cagney's screen persona and career. It's definitely more a work of criticism than biography or history. (There is, however, enough biographical information here to provide a good introduction to Cagney for those who know little or nothing about his career. There are also many good photos.) But for those who admire Cagney's work, Schickel has written a valuable assessment of just why this exceptional actor -- and quiet, gentle man offscreen -- was, and is, such a treasure to American cinema.

                                2 out of 5 stars Long-winded and Incomprehensible.......2001-08-31

This book was terribly long-winded! This was not about the man Cagney. I felt like I was reading some engineering book. The language was usually incomprehensible and boring. Instead of talking about Cagney (which I assumed this book was about) the actor, he went into the psychological and philosophical aspects of Cagney's acting and the way the public responded to this in the golden movie age. In other words, if you are looking for a decent biography about James Cagney, I do not suggest this book. The only redeeming quality that this book possesses is the group of pictures. Looking for something a little more revealing about the man James Cagney, try to get your hands on "Cagney by Cagney", the autobiography. (Although it is his autobiography, Mr. Cagney seems to be uncomfortable speaking about himself). I have purchased a copy of John McCabe's (close friend of J. Cagney) biography titled "Cagney". I'll be writing a review as soon as I finish reading this particular book.
