Good Gift for New Yorkers.......2000-10-23
New Yorkers are notorious for not being able to give directions. We know how to get there,just don't ask us for directions! This book gives specific address and phone #'s,subway maps and of course street locations (ie: cross streets for 1535 Broadway?It's in here).It is easy to use:shopping,restaurants,museums, movie theaters,houses of worship, etc; are classified according to uptown,downtown or midtown locales with numbered site maps. The size of the guide fits in a jacket pocket, or the newer,trendy horizontal sized purses ladies now carry.I've purchased my copy for use at my job.I may just change my rating to 5 stars

Not a lot of useful info.......2007-06-17
Part I, Acquiring Your Horse, includes chapters on the giveaway horse, the low-priced horse, horse sharing, and horse leasing. Part II, Keeping Your Horse, includes chapters on the backyard horse, pasture keeping, boarding, and working for board. Part III, Maintaining Your Horse, includes chapters on health care, shoeing, feeding & bedding, tack & equipment, and insurance. 'Acquiring Your Horse' is mainly useful for first-time buyers and beginners.
Overall this book is pretty general. Unless you're brand new to horses, don't bother.
Not Money Saving At All.......2006-01-15
I honestly think the author takes thriftiness a bit too far. It's really not a good idea to care for your horse's hooves yourself. If you can't pay thirty dollars every other month, what would happen if your horse had a serious injury that needed urgent attention from a vet?
I would say the only thing good about this book is horse buying section; the information there is fairly helpful. Of course that section has it's down falls too- it says most racetracks have FREE retired racehorses. But you usually have to pay an adoption fee for a retired racehorse. Also, this book is clearly designed for the novice pleasure rider, and that is probably the worst person to adopt a young, green, and hard to handle TB.
~~~Good Horse-ownership book~~~~.......2004-10-20
I expected "The Affordable Horse" by Sharon Smith to be a book full of money-saving tips on low-cost ownership. It provides some helpful advice, but most of it is common sense. The book has more information about horse ownership in general, from buying/adopting to what to feed your horse. Also, when is comes to animals like horses, I wouldn't take my chances and sacrifice quality necessties for price, and Smith is clear not to do that. For more info, you can email me at:
A very helpful books on how to spend less money for a horse.......2000-12-21
This book is helpful on giving tips on how to save some money on buying a horse. At first the book sounds like how to buy a cheap horse. What it basiccly is telling you in the book is different ways to save money. I found it helpful because both of my parents are retired and I wanted a horse. My parents thought it was to expensive, but the book gave some enxaspensive ways to own a horse. Like working at the barn to lessen the rent and other ideas. All in all it gives good tips for enxepensive horse ownership.
This book is a joke.......2000-07-26
I can't imagine why this book is getting such good reviews (who's giving them I wonder). I found most of the author's suggestions naive and many of the others obvious. I don't not think that this book provides much practical information.
Book Description
This volume is designed as a resource for using rhetorical criticism as a methodology for interpreting the Bible. Rhetorical criticism is treated in the broader context of the growing interest in the study of the literary character of the Bible. The volume is divided into two parts to accommodate both the Old and New Testaments. Each part begins with a discussion of the history and methodology of rhetorical criticism pertinent to that Testament. Here special emphasis is given to the current state and trends of the discipline and its impact on biblical interpretation. These discussions are followed by extensive bibliographies categorized to facilitate working with the published research on specific biblical texts, books, or categories of books.
Book Description
Few motion pictures have enjoyed a renaissance like the 1946 Frank Capra masterpiece IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE. Nominated for five Academy Awards, it was dismissed as syrupy Christmas fare and fell into obscurity until television gave it new life. Today it is an American tradition.
With IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE: A MEMORY BOOK, any fan of the classic film can further appreciate its magic and legacy. The warm reminiscences of the film's cast are supported by excellent photographs, providing the perfect companion for any fan of the filmor anyone who believes in miracles and angels.
The book features dozens of interviews and rare behind-the-scenes photographs that allow readers to see how the movie was created. Comments from Frank Capra, Jimmy Stewart, Bobbie Anderson, Jimmy Hawkins, Karen Grimes, and many more make the story behind the movie come alive.
More than a dozen brief biographies of the prominent cast members detail how IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE affected their lives and careers. "Then" and "now" photographs supplement the career highlights of Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore, Beulah Bondi, Gloria Grahame, Frank Faylen, Ward Bond, and others.
Like George Bailey himself, IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE was rescued from oblivion in the 1970s when it was discovered that the film's copyright had not been renewed and the motion picture had fallen into public dominion, and television stations nationwide began freely airing the film. From film remakes and marvelous merchandise to cast reunions and SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE'S hilarious parody, IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE: A MEMORY BOOK explores the adoration of generations of viewers who have fallen under the movie's spell.
Customer Reviews:
Perfect Christmas Gift!.......2006-11-29
If you love "It's a Wonderful Life" (and who doesn't?), then you'll LOVE this book! I was stunned to learn about what happened to the cast and where the Bailey kids are today and what they look like in more recent years. No other book offers the pure nostalgia factor like this one. The author gives us some amazing details about deleted scenes, as well as photographs that have surfaced showing these rare behind-the-scenes glimpses into scenes that never made the final cut. I loved the photo of Henry Travers (Clarence the Angel) in full color, not long before he died. What a treat this book is!! And the special message from Jimmy Stewart at the beginning of the book is pure magic! If you are a fan of this film, you won't be disappointed! This book is the perfect gift for any friends who love the movie, too. I've already ordered several and am giving them out this holiday!
Wonderful but not exceptional.......2006-02-23
There are plenty of surprises in this book. You'll read what director Frank Capra and the players themselves have to say about making "It's a Wonderful Life," and you'll discover some interesting names among those who were almost cast. You'll also learn that some of the film's legends are true, while others are not. For example, while it is true that Carl Switzer (Alfalfa from the "Our Gang" comedies) was the rascal who opened the gym floor exposing the swimming pool beneath, it is NOT true that muppets Bert and Ernie were named as an homage to Bert the cop and Ernie the cab driver -- that's just a coincidence. In spite of the book's rather crowded layout and lackluster production, if you love "It's a Wonderful Life" and/or if you collect IAWL memorabilia, you'll want to have this book.
A Wonderful Review of a Wonderful Book.......2005-12-28
Cox's "It's a Wonderful Life: A Memory Book" is an excellent addition to the movie buff's collection, and to fans of this exceptional film. The book is packed with stunning photographs (many never seen before), interesting tid-bits about the making-of, backstory on not only the fine performances of James Stewart, Donna Reed and Lionel Barrymore, but the character actors that helped make Capra's touching film so memorable and the holiday favorite it has become--almost 60 years later. It is well-researched and richly-written. This is a perfect gift year-round for any reason. It is one of Cox's best!
It's a wonderful book!.......2005-07-20
I have to admit that I wasn't much of an "It's a Wonderful Life" fan....until now. I had the pleasure of meeting Karolyn Grimes (little ZuZu Bailey) recently. She is such a warm and lovely person and spoke of IAWL with such passion that I bought the DVD the next night and watched it with new eyes. Now I'm hooked.
I was so delighted to find this book, to learn even more about this classic movie. After reading the book, I had to watch the DVD again.
Even if you're just a casual viewer of the movie, you'll still love this book. It's incredibly well-researched and jam-packed with beautiful photographs. Stephen Cox has a way with words. You feel like you're sitting with an old friend. His books are like comfort-food for the mind!
Awesome book!!!!!.......2005-01-15
I totally loved this book!- I finished it in one sitting- I was facinated with all of the little tidbits that I wasnt aware of: H.B. Warner being sauced when he filmed the loss of his son scene- I was especially impressed with the very rare colored photos in the mid section of the book. I have read almost every one of this author's books but this one is a special holiday treat!
Why did the author write this biography?.......2006-01-17
If you are looking for an objective analysis of Jimmy Stewart's life and career, this is not the book to buy and read. Jonathan Coe, a journalist who writes for the Guardian and London Review of Books, seems not to know what it means to be a conservative. Throughout this book, Coe refers to the inconsistencies in Stewart's life because of the actor's politics, conservative, were in conflict with the different rolls he played on the screen. For example, in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Coe thought it odd that Stewart played a part that championed the little guy (fighting for a boy scout camp against the developer) and not take the side of the developer, which Coe believed Stewart's conservative politics would mandate. Coe also claimed that Stewart must have had a difficult time playing the part of a pacifist in Shenandoah, which again did not mesh very well Stewart's politics. In all, Coe paints a less than attractive portrait of Jimmy Stewart and one has to ask, " Why did the author spend time researching and writing this biography?" It is also clear that Coe has little understanding of what it means to be a political conservative in the United States.
Jimmy Stewart: A Dreadful Biography.......2000-03-14
This biography was short on detail and long on Mr. Sanello's supercilious and trite commentary. Mr. Stewart truly did live a wonderful life; let's hope that someday someone writes a worthy biography.
A rash book about a true gentleman........1997-10-30
I read the book quickly and felt it was also written quickly (especially near the end). I enjoyed learning more about the wonderous Mr. Jimmy Stewart, but was disappointed in the essence of this book. I'm sure I have aided in more wealth for the author, but perhaps by writing about Mr. Stewart he has learned about the core of a true gentleman. The typos were numerous...bad writing and bad editing. But, I did receive tremendous pleasure in reading the remarks by Judy Stewart Harcourt. Her father must be proud.
Where was the copy-editor??.......1997-10-04
This book was the pits!! Sanello was in such a rush to cash in on Mr. Stewart's death, that he did not even bother to proof-read the text. The story jumps from year to year, story to story in no reasonable order. His unsubstantiated views and opinions were intermingled between news clippings, and "reported" conversations. And to top it off, the same misguided passages are repeated throughout! My only regret: that I finished the book. But, unfortuantely, there were no books left on the shelf, and I am too big a fan of James Stewart. Next time I will know to stay away from an "instant book." Mr. Stewart would be rolling in his grave if he knew of this trash bearing his name.
There is only one pleasure in this book.......1997-08-28
This book was published just a few months after Jimmy Stewart's death. It seems to have been researched and written in a manner of weeks - so quickly that they didn't even catch all of the typos - and that quick work resulted in a badly written book. Jarring references to popular icons such as Kate Moss, Sylvester Stallone, and Aaron Spelling run throughout the book and detract from the reading experience. Sanello seems to be attempting to draw in a younger audience by using such references, but he merely suceeded in annoying me. Written like a freshman's first English essay, with slightly less attention paid to form, the only reason I would recommend this book is for the brief glimpse, although badly presented, it gives of a great man's life
Customer Reviews:
The definitive word on IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE.......2006-12-10
If you want to hear "from the horses mouth" about It's A Wonderful Life then this CD is for you.
You hear Frank Capra talk about the movie for almost 30 minutes in a Q&A setting. Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed speak about it too. Other cast and crew members tell their stories about working on this classic movie. Karolyn Grimes(ZuZu) share lots of interesting trivia. This 90 minute audio book, which is kinda like a documentery, is told from stories compiled by Jimmy Hawkins who played the youngest Bailey kid(Tommy).He shares stories only a real insider would know. You find out from the start where this story came from and follow its journey from beginning to the present. Its a classic itself. A must for any IAWL collector or movie historian. A+
