Book Description
A classic of northern exploration and adventure, LAST PLACES is Lawrence Millman's marvelously told account of his journey along the ancient Viking sea routes that extend from Norway to Newfoundland. Traveling through landscapes of transcendent desolation, Millman wandered by way of the Shetland Islands, the Faeroes, Iceland, Greenland, and Labrador. His way was marked by surprising human encounters--with a convicted murderer in Reykjavik, an Inuit hermit in Greenland, an Icelandic guide who leads him to a place called Hell, and a Newfoundlander who warns him about the local variant of the Abominable Snowman. By turns earthy and lyrical, LAST PLACES is an ebullient celebration of the exotic North.
Customer Reviews:
What a great book!!!.......2007-05-12
As one who loves adventure travel I rate this as one of the best accounts ever for one chasing through this part of the world. It was especially meaningful as I have traveled the same route...The Shetlands, The Faroes, Iceland, Greenland and Labrador. How much fun to re-live it through the eyes of Lawrence Millman. Unlike Millman, I never had the chance to meet and live with the folks like he did. His encounters with the locals are so funny and engaging that you'll find yourself laughing throughout the book. If you are the least bit interested in this part of the world, read this book first and you'll hardly be able to wait to start your trip. This man is truly a great story teller and the kind of guy you'd just like to sit down with and rehash his adventures. What a great book!
Read this and then visit the places!.......2007-04-25
There is a reason why every rating here (so far) is 5 stars - read it and you will find out why.
The best travel book I have ever read. I picked it up becasue I had been in a couple of the places covered in the book. Millman truly captures the sense of place, people, life and environment and is funnier than you can ever imagine travel writing being. He gets involved with the locals and this leads to our discovery of some very interesting local customs. He provides the best description of being sea sick that I have ever read - I could almost feel it!
I have loaned this book to so many people that it is dog-eared. It is the book we always talk about year after year and have great laughs.
Vagabond of the High North.......2007-02-21
A June through October vagabondage in the shadows of the Viking far-farers. Lawrence Millman wanders from Norway to Newfoundland by way of the Faeroes, Iceland, and Greenland. His engaging mix of descriptions of the local color and his own wry humour make for some fine and entertaining reading. Written in a journal travelogue style with just enough history and customs mixed in to tempt you to visit these "last places".
An excellent adventure story. Highly recommended.
Extracts: A Field Guide for Iconoclasts
Fascinating............2005-07-20
As a polar regions travel junkie, I devoured Millman's account of his journey through the Faeroes, Iceland, Greenland, Newfoundland, and places in between. I thought he did an admirable job of relaying the harships of life (especially in Greenland) while always coming back to the mysterious appeal that this region holds for many.
From Portico Birmingham Magazine.......2004-02-24
This is a really fun trip. Millman decides that he's going to follow the Vikings' original sea route from Norway to the Shetland and Faroe Islands, Iceland, Greenland, and eventually Newfoundland and the New World. The subtitle is "A Journey in the North," and that is quite true. For most of us, it is an alien landscape he travels through, eating fried seal nose bits, being propositioned in Iceland, seeing an albino moose, meeting a convicted murderer and enjoying other truly bizarre adventures. Last Places defines the success of the travel genre: you read it and then say, "I have to go there and see for myself."

Great Gift Idea!.......2006-11-02
If you're looking for some good insights for yourself, this is a great, easy-to-read book. But, it's really great to give as a gift to a young bride or an expectant mom. Yes, some of the things the author discusses should be common sense, but let's face it, not everyone has common sense and many of us forget to use it sometimes! Ms. Walker gave me some great ideas and got me to re-think some of the things our family does. I am the envy of my whole family because of the deals I get on children's clothing, and until I read this book, I really wouldn't have seriously thought about rummage sales and consignment shops. Now, you can't pull me out of them. If you're looking for a quick, down-to-earth start on getting a handle on your budget, this is a helpful and fun book to start with. Thanks!
Long title...quick read for busy Moms.......2006-03-04
I like this book for it's practicality, simplicity and the fact that the author, whether intentional or not, made this an easy read that doesn't consume more of your time than necessary. Some of these suggestions are fairly common sense, others are eye-opening suggestions that could certainly make for practical use. Her writing style is not superior or overly-authoritative but more personal and conversational. Like reading a letter from a good friend who's "been there".
Excellent Ideas!.......2005-04-26
I am a mom of two little girls, and, like all other mothers, am always looking for ways to save money - but with precious little time to hunt for bargains. I thought that Christine Walker's book gave some easy, creative ways to cut costs on everyday items. As the author suggested, I have gone to my local grocery store and introduced myself to the store manager. He said he is happy to help point out bargains, and told me that he wished more people would take the time to seek him out!
Also, I went to a dollar store - never had been to one before - and it was a blast. There really are everyday items to be purchased for $1 - hairspray, shampoo, candles, etc.
This book is a quick read and a lot of fun. I highly recommend it.
If you have common sense you don't need this book.......2005-03-18
This slim book is filled with common-sense ideas on how to save money such as cut coupons, buy in bulk, eBay, rummage sales, etc. If you normally live a moderately frugal lifestyle, you won't find any new insights here. In fact, I can add a new one: #66: Don't waste $15.95 on this book.
Don't go without, get it for less!!!.......2005-02-15
The title of my review is the author's motto throughout the book. The book is short BUT full of helpful hints and information. Walker obviously knows what she is talking about, and knows what works and what doesn't when it comes to cutting back on spending. She is realistic, sometimes funny, and always to the point. By the way, despite the title, the book is in fact for anybody who would like to learn how to downsize without being a miser and still enjoying shopping!!! The Mystery Shopping suggestion is WONDERFUL. My husband has landed a LOT of assignments!

The Complete Guide to Horse Care.......2000-08-15
Not a book for the beginner. Used too many terms without giving any reference. I had to refer to other books just to find out what the author was talking about. Alot of medical, longwinded jargon that isn't useful in real life when a simplified, straight-forward description would suffice. If you have a horse and you want to learn how to take care of your charge I would not recommend this book to do it. Great book for a medical student.
The Best!.......2000-07-22
I loved this book and it was really good to have around the house when the horses were there. It told and taught me tons that I didn't know, even though I have been riding forever

Book Description
One of the world's finest private collections of Indian 'miniature' paintings, a promised bequest to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, is represented by some 90 works of art created in workshops across India over the course of four centuries. The paintings, all reproduced in full color and accompanied by a detailed scholarly examination, span the period from before the rise of Islamic Mughal rule in northern India during the 1500s to the heyday of the British Raj in the late 19th century. The 'intimate worlds' evoked by these images vividly illustrate Hindu, Muslim, and Jain religious stories; offer visions of life at court; and explore the pleasures and pains of love.
Essays include a statement from the collector and an introductory history of courtly painting on the Indian subcontinent, as well as discussions of the history of the collecting of Indian art, hierarchies of taste, and the relationship between artists and patrons.

Customer Reviews:
Makes it easy to get started and is also a great reference!.......2002-01-03
This book is set up into lessons, one for each letter of the alphabet. It goes over the natural remedies for many illnesses and health issues, including item, recommended dosage and how to prepare it. When you're done with the lessons, you can use it as a huge alphabetical reference guide. This book packs a lot of information in an easy-to-use format.
Great introduction and reference guide.......2002-01-03
This guide works for both those new to studying herbs and those who would like a solid reference book. It is laid out in alphabetical lessons that can later serve as a quick reference index. The author actually goes beyond the herbs themselves to discuss illnesses and ailments that can be treated with natural remedies. The book makes it easy to get started studying a sometimes overwhelming topic!
Whether you know a little or a lot..........2000-04-14
If you don't know a lot about herbal remedies, buy this book! That's what I did, and I learned more than I expected about finding, preparing and using herbs for healing. I thought I would just get an overview, but the book is easy to understand, and the review questions are terrific for making sure you retain what you've read! I was so impressed that I lent the book to a friend who knows a lot about natural healing. She ended up buying a copy for herself! I'm not kidding. It's really that good.

Book Description
Starting from David's response to Nathan's parable in 2 Sam 12, this book employs an original synthesis of literary, linguistic and psychoanalytic theory to explore the impact of the biblical text on its readers. It draws parallels between the relationships of speaker to utterance, texts to reader and father to son in arguing for an underlying "anxiety of utterance" as the source of textual power. Biblical scholars will find stimulating readings of many problematic narratives as well as a detailed investigation of the poetics of the biblical oath. The theoretical account of the role of characters in mediating the interaction between text and reader will be of interest to all students of literature. Its provocative insights into the relationship between God, language, masculinity and authority raise important questions for theology and gender studies.

"Golden Age of B-Westerns ~ the heroine or leading lady".......2006-02-20
Empire Publishing presents "Saddle Gals:: A Filmography of Female Players in B-Westerns of the Sound Era" (Paperback), from authors Steve Turner and Edgar M. Wyatt, listing the name of each actress who appeared and who rode along side the heroes of B-Westerns...note the title of the film, studio, year of release and name of the cowboy who was the star...from the sound era beginning in 1928 up and including September 12,1954, which was the last B-Western film "Two Guns and a Badge", from Allied Artists with director Lewis D. Collins, featuring Wayne Morris, Beverly Garland, Morris Ankrum, Roy Barcroft, Bob Wilke and I. Stanford Jolley...all in all a wonderful cast for the official closing chapters of a long run of oaters.
The foreword by Jennifer Holt (daughter of Jack Holt and sister to Tim Holt)...introduction by authors Steve Turner and Edgar M. Wyatt noting the importance of the female character who is constantly in trouble and leading our hero into some kind of danger to make the film more exciting.
My favorite heroine of all time was Peggy Stewart from the early days in "Wells Fargo" (1937) with Joel McCrea, "Tucson Raiders" (1944), "Cheyenne Wildcat" (1944), "Sheriff of Las Vegas" (1944), "Marshal of Laredo" (1945), "California Gold Rush" (1946), "Conquest of Cheyenne" (1946), "Sheriff of Red Wood Valley" (1946), "Kansas Territory" (1952) all with Bill Elliott, appear in five films with Allan Lane, eight with Sunset Carson, three with Lash LaRue and two with Jim Bannon...Stewart mainly worked with Republic Studios she always gave us the impression that she was having the time of his life and completely in control.
Hats off to our friends at Empire Publishing as Steve Turner and Edgar M. Wyatt put down on paper without a doubt the best book commemorating the leading lady's and their rare talent that helped make the B-Western great....If you're into the memories of the B-Western, this is the one you've been anxiously waiting for...and saddle gals and pals, it was well worth the wait...another winner from Empire Publishing...gotta love it!

A fine tool for the researchers as far as it goes, this ultra-slim volume is written by two well-known enthusiasts. A little broader knowledge of film history, however, could have spared the authors the embarrasment of including French-born ACTOR Jean Del Val among their "Saddle Gals"!

Marketing Asian Places: Attracting Investment, Industry and Tourism to Cities, States and Nations
Philip Kotler, Michael Alan Hamlin, Irving Rein, & Donald H Haider
As Asia enters a new era of fierce global competition for investment, people, and tourists, which places will be successful? Who will be the new Asian winners? The challenges and threats to Asian prosperity have never been greater as new opportunities arise and new threats mount at an increasingly faster rate. Nowhere in the world are the stakes for recreating development models more acute. And nowhere is the need for strategic place marketing greater. Fortunately, successful examples are everywhere.
Beijing picked up the pieces from its failed bid for the 2000 Olympic Games, worked to figure out what went wrong, and overhauled its communication and marketing program to bid for the 2008 Games - successfully. Three things accounted for its success: massive efforts to match IOC criteria, an effective government and corporate partnership, including foreign investors, and pushing the idea of a completely new venue for the Games.
Small success stories are important, too. School children in Cambodia's tiny village of Robib connect to the outside world using e-mail and the web, and villagers participate in e-commerce through their own website, www.villageleap.com. The first US$6,000 raised selling handcrafted silk products to overseas buyers was used to set up a pig farm. Places like Robib are showing that technology has a profound impact in the development of previously isolated places in Asia.
In this changing and challenging environment, places need to adopt a strategic marketing plan to maintain and develop the advances they have achieved. Marketing Asian Places shows how to attract initial investment, maintain the development through targeted policies, and establish a high-profile investment environment for long-term growth.
Book Description
Why do corporations comply with the law? When companies violate the law, what kinds of interventions are most apt to return them to compliant status? The purpose of this book is to examine whether a shift toward the use of criminal law with its emphasis on punishment and stigmatization will be a successful crime control strategy. The author reviews whether current legal systems based in criminal, civil, and regulatory law "deter" corporate crime. She concludes that strict criminalization models that rely on punishments will not yield sufficiently high levels of compliance.

Book Description
It is a well-known fact that conventional commercial banks provide financial intermediation services on the basis of interest rates on assets and liabilities. However, since interest is prohibited in Islam, Islamic banks have developed several other modes through which savings are mobilized and passed on to entrepreneurs, none of which involve interest.
Islamic Banking and Finance discusses Islamic financial theory and practice, and focuses on the opportunities offered by Islamic finance as an alternative method of financial intermediation. Key features of profit-sharing (as opposed to debt-based) contracts are highlighted, and the ways in which they can facilitate improved efficiency and stability of a financial system are explored.
The authors illustrate that in addition to some 200 Islamic banks operating in Muslim as well as non-Muslim countries, some of the biggest multinational banks are now offering Islamic financial products.
This book will fascinate students, researchers and academics with a special interest in comparative banking, middle-eastern studies and international finance, and will also appeal to practitioners of banking and finance.

Customer Reviews:
Garner's only biography--but the music was the man.......2000-01-31
I don't know that there was any explaining Erroll Garner's genius, since it was a natural gift, any more than someone could explain Mozart's gift. This book provides little insight, but it does have some wonderful information and a discography which was complete at that time. There is now an Erroll Garner website, although I do not consider it very complete. If anyone is interested, one thing that is often missing from information is that Mr. Garner started out as a stride piano player. His style later change to the guitar strumming left-hand style he became famous for. Yet, paradoxically, being constricted to that style, although making him famous, limited his genius. His Latin recordings in the 50s, 60s, and 70s, when he was not restricted to that style, were a wonderful demonstration of rhythmic independence of the hands in piano playing. What this biography talks about is the influence of Martha Glaser. The implication is strong in other people's words, that this influence, while causing his fame, also limited his genius. One can gain almost as much information from old record jackets as one can from reading this book, but it is different information. Although I don't know if Amazon edits out this type of stuff, I can recommend some things about Mr. Garner, you might not find elsewhere. There is some wonderful information about Erroll Garner's playing in the CD-ROM by Dick Hyman titled A Century of Jazz Piano, by JSS Music. Mr. Hyman also wrote an article about Mr. Garner's style once in Piano Today magazine. Soon enough Hal Leonard Publishing is supposed to be coming out with a book of Erroll Garner's transcriptions in its Artist Transcription series. The most extensive catalog of Mr. Garner's CDs, as far as I know, is available at www.ktel.com. There were six music books put out about Mr. Garner's playing. Three were by Cherry Lane music, but only two of these are still in print. There were also two sheet music folios of Erroll Garner's music put out in the forties, when he was still a stride player. The recording that the Smithsonian put out is Mr. Garner playing in this style. This recording is transcribed in Brian Priestley's book, Jazz Piano Styles. There is also a book that was put out in the 70s, I think, by Schwarz, about how to play in the style of Garner, but it is long out of print. Although not great, at least it was an attempt. Finally, there is a wonderful series of books by Bill Dobbins, available from Jamey Aebersold. In the last one, there is an imitation of him playing Erroll Garner, which can be ordered on tape. This is also instructive. And really finally, there are two more examples I can think of. There were two books put out by Claude Bolling, in which several pieces owed a lot to Erroll Garner. One was very similar to Mr. Garner's latin style, but based on the chord changes to The Man I Love. Another was called Garnerama, and it drew upon Mr. Garner's ballad style. Yet another example of someone trying to imitate Mr. Garner can be found in one of Lee Evans's books. Also, Mr. Hyman put out a book of jazz etudes, based on styles of different jazz pianist. This is included in the CD-ROM I mentioned. I was planning a web site, but someone beat me to it. Yet, perhaps someone can find this information posted here useful. Please feel free to email me.My son is named Erroll, after Erroll Garner, so I would really appreciate it. If I ever get feeling down, all I have to do is put on a CD of Mr. Garner's, and I get going again.
Sorry i did not read this book but............1999-05-02
I saw Mr.Garner life in concert in the fifty s in Amsterdam Concertgebouw. He is for me the most original style player,in the whole Jazz world. Because of his heigth, he needed the telephone book from Amsterdam, to sit on, upon his chair so he could play the piano. Good luck with your website. A real Garner fan.
erroll the marvellous.......1999-03-05
I like Erroll garner, it's my favoite jazzman. He got a lot of swing and style and that's why i like his music. I would like to see a better site of he, because "il le mérite" (sorry for my poor english) Good bye And "vive Erroll garner!!!!!!"
