Customer Reviews:
Only wish there were a 'zero stars' option.......2005-07-12
The very best thing I can say about this lame waste of trees purporting to be a travel guide is that at least I didn't BUY it...It was just an impulse grab it at the library checkout desk. But still, I'll never get the time it wasted back. All copies should be burned with the author and editors on top as a warning to others.
Waste of Money.......2005-03-11
I wish I had read the reviews on this book before I bought it. The book talks about common sense items that anyone can figure out on their home. A waste of my money & time.
Don't Waste Your Time.......2004-07-29
Unless you've had someone coddle you your whole life, Fodor's How to Take a Road Trip is a waste of time. Banal common sense info you don't need to buy. For example, it takes a whole page to explain where to find a road map: bookstore, autoclub, gas station, on line, rest stops. Don't expect any MacGyver tricks of the road---like how to open your car door if you locked your keys inside. Fodor's advice: bring a spare set. This book is nothing more than an empty gimmick.

Customer Reviews:
Not a bad book for the casual chef.......2006-11-10
As a veteran food service professional and a devotee of the Food Lover's Companion i expected a little bit more from this book. It's full of fantastic tips and tricks, many known only in the food service industry, but i would be hard pressed to see this used as a reference book. It's interesting light reading. I expected more food science and chemistry and less 'Hints from Heloise'. The author's reliance on non-stick aerosol spray oil is a little unnerving.
It will certainly find a place in my chef's office, but more for the intersting tidbits of knowledge regarding beets than anything else.
Much of this information would be useful for the casual cook, but it lacks the 'must-have' draw of the Food Lover's Companion.
Always Find What I Want To Know.......2005-07-21
I got this book for a present about six months ago and can't stop picking it up. I heard this author on the radio recently and she was just as engaging and informative talking about burgers as she was about wine-and all the info she discussed is in this book, so I figure it's a darn good deal.
I've been cooking for a long time, but keep finding great info in The Food Lover's Tiptionary-whether for everyday cooking techniques (such as for subjects like corn, eggs, potatoes, tomatoes, etc.) or for tips for special event preparations (like how to handle caviar, or different ways to prepare risotto). There's even info on kitchenware and appliances-from knives to food processors.
Love the "tidbits" at the beginning of almost every listing-little informational "bites" (history, etymology, etc.) that add so much to the subject. In short, LOVE this handy, easy-to-read, exceedingly informative book!
Tips and Techniques to Boost Basic Cooking Skills........2004-11-05
"The Food Lover's Tiptionary" is a collection of tips and techniques on basic culinary subjects, organized alphabetically. I believe there are about 500 separate entries, but the book doesn't say. The 6,000 tips referred to on the book's cover fall under the entries. The book covers specific foods, general food categories, kitchen utensils, and culinary techniques. Food entries are presented in the following format: Tidbit (either a definition or food trivia), Purchasing, Equivalents, Storing, Preparing, Cooking, and/or Using. Some of the food entries are accompanied by short recipes. The formats of other types of entries vary, and may be best described by example: The entry for "Cookies" provides extensive instructions on making dough, preparing pans, baking, finishing, and storing. "Ice" gives general information and instructions for various ice cubes for different occasions. "Baked Goods" includes general baking tips. "Pasta Shapes" describes 65 shapes. Food quotes by recognizable names are scattered throughout the book, wherever the subject of the quote is found. There are several charts in the book, such as metric conversion, oven temperature equivalents, and pan sizes. And there is a Recipe Index in the back, for the over 100 short recipes found throughout the book.
Every cook could learn something from the "Tiptionary", but I think beginning or moderately experienced cooks will find it most useful. The subjects, themselves, are pretty basic. "Gourmet" subjects are few, and ethnic foods not at all. The entries are thorough, though, and would be helpful to an experienced chef if he/she doesn't happen to have experience with a particular food that is included. The emphasis is on instruction in "The Food Lover's Tiptionary", whereas the author's popular "Food Lover's Companion" emphasizes definitions. The "Food Lover's Companion" describes nearly 6,000 culinary terms -ethnic, gourmet, and obscure included.
Thanks again, Sharon Tyler Herbst.......2004-09-21
I've long been a fan of Sharon Tyler Herbst's books (have "The Ultimate A to Z Bar Guide," the "New Food Lover's Companion, the "Wine Lover's Companion" and "The Ultimate Guide to Pitcher Drinks"). So, when I recently received the new edition of her "Tiptionary" I eagerly started thumbing through it. This one's absolutely fabulous, and is also arranged in an easy A to Z format, which is one of the reasons I like this author's books so much! My new hubby's a hamburger fanatic (I'll convert him, yet;) so imagine my delight when I found over two pages of info on the subject. Now I cook his burgers just the way he likes them. Of course, I've found oodles of other subjects that make ME happy, like corn. The "Tiptionary" gave me dozens of hints on how to buy, store and cook it, and it has a super recipe for "Grilled Corn Off the Cob," which my spouse loves! And that brings me to another favorite feature of this book--it has dozens of short recipes scattered throughout. Not to mention that it tells you what to do with leftovers of whatever food you're looking up. Add to that loads of charts (temperature, measurements, pan sizes, pasta sizes, etc.), and you've got a book that every cook should have. Thank you, Sharon Tyler Herbst, for another great one!
Everything I wanted to know and more.......2004-08-12
Well, this book is certainly a winner. I LOVE to cook and know a lot about the subject, but a friend gave this to me for my birthday and I can't stop reading it. It's the little things that count for me, like information on pan substitutions (different sizes that will work for a pan you don't have) and temperature and measurement charts, and a pasta glossary. And I love the fabulous tips on all the foods. For instance, corn and tomato season is coming up and I've been buying a lot. This book gives me all kinds of tips on how to buy, store and prepare them, not to mention what to do with leftovers! I even learned how to make a juicier, more tender and less caloric hamburger. And I finally learned how to handle my microwave oven, which has been sitting unused for months. Need I say more? I LOVE THIS BOOK, and I think most people will, too.

Helpful hints to simplify your life and save money!.......2007-06-04
Mary Hunt's collections of tips for uses of household products is fantastic. This book collects all the little tips that we've all heard "somewhere in the past" into a quick and easy to read reference guide. I highly recommend this book. Even my husband is learning a thing or two ;)
My new favorite book.......2003-02-16
I LOVE this book. It's full of great tips on just about anything you can imagine, and not all of them are about saving money. Moms will appreciate the food section because it has a ton of great tips on increasing the shelf life of dairy and produce items. I have been watching my money and my grocery bills for awhile, and I've read quite a few books on the subject, and most of these tips were new to me. If you are a more experienced tightwad and find that most money-saving books don't have much to offer you anymore, this book may just be something new.
So easy to read and find what you are looking for.......1999-01-31
A Great book!!! You can't believe how many solutions to your problems in every day life can be solved . I myself had a a reason to use one of Mary's answers to a problem. I had put 2 sets of old panty hose in my car repair kit . When my fan belt broke I was able to make a temporary fix with the pantyhose. I have to say again what a great book!!!
Wonderful book! Will pay for itself in a week!.......1998-07-21
All sorts of tips, the ones about vinegar are really useful to me. Loved it, and would recommend it to anyone wanting to do things simply.
Worth its weight in GOLD!.......1997-10-19
Have you ever wished you could remember all those great tips your grandmother told you or the one's you've heard somewhere along the line but have no way of remembering? Even more have you wished there was a cheap and effective way to do something? Well here they are--quick tips for how to do stuff. This is the greatest resource I've come across in years. And they're so easy to find. What a bargain!

Sharon Herbst's Tiptionary is much more than a "Dear Abby" of cooking. Take bread, for instance. Did you know that one beaten egg has the leavening power of half a teaspoon of baking powder? That breads made without fat, like French bread, have shorter shelf lives because fat holds the moisture in? That if you're going to use a glass pan instead of metal, you ought to reduce the oven by 25 degrees? The tips go on and on, simple enough for any novice to understand and appreciate, extensive enough for the most experienced cook to learn a thing or three.
From abalone (should be alive when purchased, cooked within a day, pounded for tenderness, and not overcooked lest it toughen) to yogurt (is storable for up to ten days after the carton date, can be substituted for sour cream in baked goods, and keeps the intestinal system full of healthy bacteria--though not if it's been frozen), Herbst's culinary guide divulges more than 4,500 facts, shortcuts, and remedies on everything to do with food and drink. If you didn't take notes whenever Mom uttered some crumb of kitchen wisdom, and don't want to call her every time you overbeat the whipped cream, curdle the soup, and can't get a jar to open, it's no longer a calamity. The Tiptionary tells you the approximate volumes of common pan sizes, instructs that pecans have a fat content over 70 percent, and explains how to eradicate a lingering onion odor (from kitchen, hands, and breath). Because it's compact and wastes no space on color plates or fancy illustrations, there's room, and certainly a place, for the Tiptionary in even the most petite of kitchens. --Stephanie Gold

Customer Reviews:
Can't cook without it!.......2001-05-18
I bought this book, really by accident, in April of 1998 and have found it an indispensable tool in my kitchen. I love it and often give it as a gift (it makes a nice wedding present, coupled with a cooking utensil, etc.).
This book helped to validate everything my grandmother said!.......2000-04-06
After completing my most recent cookbook, I ran across this excellent resource. While I consider myself to work mostly on instinct in the kitchen, it is fun to read that you were right all along. Yes, as my grandmother taught me - potatoes are easier to peel when hot. She always made me boil them in their jackets when making potato salad.
I had also wondered why lentils sometimes stayed firm after being cooked for the same time as other recipes. The secret is on page 207 and an acidic ingredient is the culprit. From personal experience I knew that I should let a cake cool before frosting it but this could save someone a lot of melted icing if they just didn't think about it.
Think of this book as your grandmothers wisdom all in one book. Sharon is truly an expert and has done her research. This book has helped me to realize why things work the way they do and has validated many of my own beliefs. It is an entertaining and education read - just take it by the Tablespoon....there is a wealth of information here.

Indispensible! All serious cooks need this book........1999-05-15
This book by Sharon Tyler Herbst, author of another indispensible book, the Food Lover's Companion, is a cooks dream come true. It contains solutions for almost every problem you will encounter in the kitchen, from how to properly choose and prepare artichokes to how to fix burned stews and any other question or minor emergency you might encounter in the kitchen. I highly recommend this book.

Tips are okay. Poor editing. Mary Hunt's other books are much better. I'll be donating this one to the library.
Save Money.......2007-10-03
The book is full of information on how to save money by recycling and using cheap products. It is well organized by topics. It is a good resource book for situation's that come up in the home.
Well worth the money.......2007-08-11
A great addition to my "frugality" library shelf. A few repetitions, but otherwise solid.

Practical, Fun, Fabulous!.......2007-05-22
I'm a regular subscriber to Mary Hunt's email newsletter and have loved browsing through all the tips. But - the book is even better because every tip is categorized and easy to find! Some tips are amazing, most are money savers, lots are time savers, and all are interesting, giving pause to "why didn't I think of that?" This is the first book I've "read" in years that wasn't a sound recording and I'm SO glad I did! Tiptionary and Tiptionary 2 are "must haves" for anyone who is a Domestic CEO!

Book Description
Roses are the "queens of the garden"--glorious, regal, and sometimes a little hard to handle. In A Year in the Life of a Rose, Reddell shares his tips on when and how to plant, prune, feed, grow and cut all kinds of roses throughout the year. In an invaluable season-by-season survey, Reddell discusses rose care in their respective USDA geographic zones, and more.
Customer Reviews:
My first reference for rose growing........1998-09-16
Short sweet and to the point. Reddell covers all of the basics of growing roses from selecting varieties to preparing the planting hole to annual care. Particularly handy and unique is the appendix which gives rose growing tips from master growers in each of the 9 USDA zones--finally a book that helps you grow roses where you live.
Roses in Quebec? We must be mad!.......1997-11-06
This book is one of the most useful - practical - "how to" rose books I have come across in many years of research. In brief, not particularly technical language, the author takes you through the year giving excellent advice, tips and recipies along the way. The additional advice from experts in most zones enables you to adjust your plans for your own climate. It's pocket size ensures that I carry my copy around with me for regular reference. My roses have never looked better and I include some fairly tender varieties in a zone 4b (the Laurentian mountains). For beginners or experts, this really is a "must have". I also recomment "Tender Roses for Tough Climates" by Douglas Green for any other climate-challenged (as in very, very cold) roseophiles.
