The best "local" guide book written for the true hiker!!!.......2006-06-27

I purchased this book in 1996 while moving to attend UNM in New Mexico and learning (by asking) as a fairly new comer where to go and how strenuous the hikes were for a Jersey transplant. While building up my lung capacity on the Sandia Crest hike, I referred to this book over and over again to plan my hikes and really see this beautiful State from the trails. And I still recommend it to those folks traveling to New Mexico for the first or the 10th time. It is the best book written by a local devout hiker and used by local devout hikers. You can not go wrong with this book-it will show your topo maps, truly rate the hikes and give you the details needed to plan, it will be a treasured addition to your library and a good travel companion for beginners and seasoned hikers. Don't forget your water & happy trails, enjoy!!!!

Very valuable.......2005-11-12

There are several books available on hiking in New Mexico. This was the one I wound up using the most on a recent trip to the Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Others, such as Parent's book, were also useful and I would therefore suggest having a look at all available guides. However, Hill's work includes legible photocopies of USGS topographic maps, and most of the newer hiking guides tend to feature homemade maps which give the user far less information.
In my particular case, the material on trails in and around the Guadalupe Reef was most helpful, as Bill Schneider's recently re-released book on the Guadalupe Mtns and Carlsbad Caverns National Parks doesn't include information on the trails in that part of the Reef in between these two parks, certainly worth visiting for those who are lucky enough to get to this area.
That the book is ten years old is an obvious drawback; things happen, even in a state like New Mexico that has so much public land. For example, a very hot fire had burned up most of the north face of Capitan by Roswell, rendering the trail up the NE side pretty faint. But of course, if you're not willing to ask questions of the locals in this fairly genial state, and do a bit of poking about yourself, you probably don't belong in a place with such rough and potentially lethal geography anyway.

My fiancée and I bought this book before we moved to New Mexico in March of 2000. It has proven to be a fantastic guide and we believe that it's the only book you need to explore the state on foot. Well organized by area with great trail descriptions and maps. A wonderful book!

Excellent summary of Wilderness Areas.......2004-06-03

Despite reviews by people from out of state, this book is an excellent source of information on the Wilderness areas of New Mexico. I only hope they update it soon with any new information. This is obviously not meant to be a hiking guide and is not the reason i purchased it. Finding a good source of all of the wilderness areas of the state on the internet was troublesome, even for me, who surfs a lot. While i could get a good list of the wilderness areas out of the gazeteer, i couldn't get a list of wilderness study areas. The book also gives some trail suggestions which are very helpful, but in the end, i went to other sources. Maybe my honoroble friend from Colorado should stay up there and leave the wilderness areas of New Mexico to us.

Looking for a climbing/hiking guide? This isn't it!.......2004-05-20

I honestly don't see why anyone found this book useful. I was totally fooled into buying it by the positive reviews here! The first thing that happened was that I looked at the front page map of the entire state to find out what areas were near the town I will be in for an upcoming trip. The map had lots of highways marked with NO TOWNS OR CITIES. Now maybe New Mexicans all memorized the highway map of their state, but for a visitor the lack of any towns or cities made this key map pretty much useless. The book has lots of nice photos on glossy pages, and gives tons of information on history and ecology of the various wilderness areas. It mentions some hikes and climbs and gives sketchy verbal directions, but if you are looking for a climbing or hiking guide to New Mexico this book is pretty much useless. The "maps" it has for the different areas are not topo maps, but just line maps of some surrounding roads and trails. I bought this book to help me plan some hikes and maybe easy peak climbs while I was in northern New Mexico. If I could return it I would, it will not be useful at all. If you are looking for a climbing guide, or even a guide to serious hiking in New Mexico don't get this book or you will be just as disappointed as I was!

Great - Almost too great.......2000-06-10

This is a guide that the hikers, desert rats, and general wilderness afficionados of New Mexico have long been in need of. It is the first truly comprehensive guide to both the known and "desperately need to be known about and protected" areas in the land of enchantment. Not only does it offer good general info about the areas but their historical significance, why they qualify as wilderness, and how people can access the areas. The more major areas all have some additional text, which is clear and intriguing. Also nice are the authors "favorite hikes" for some areas - they are an excellent starting point for the hiker with a limited schedule. The photos which accompany some areas are also spectacular. I have but a few gripes with the book and they are as follows: Some areas could use a little more description - especially about why they are so ecologically important. It would also be nice if the maps were a little better, but they are quite adequate. However my most major complaint lies not with the book itself, It is such a good guide that my "secret" areas will scarce remain secrets...

Good Doctrinal Overview.......2007-01-11

This book was extremely helpful and accessible for illustrating general doctrine; however, although it discusses a smattering of major cases (e.g., Palsgraf) and other minor cases that may or may not appear in your torts textbook, it does not provide substantial depth for these cases and does not address important dissents (such as Andrews' dissent in Palsgraf), so you shouldn't attempt to rely on it for that purpose. You could easily get through torts without this book, but given the nature of law school curves, why not give yourself every advantage?

The best of the E&E series.......2007-01-11

Torts and Property are the top two E&E books in terms of how helpful they are in covering complex topics for the 1st year law student. This book's layout matches almost perfectly with most torts courses, and the essay exam practices were the most helpful for my finals. Probably the best of the E&E series.

You can definitely get by without the book, not because the book isn't helpful, since the subject matter itself is relatively easy compared to other classes. This was a good quick read. But that's mainly due to the fact that every other page is nearly blank and the last half of the book is filmographies. There isn't a lot of new stuff and there are better biographies, but if you're looking for a quick easy read, then this book will do. There's a few small pictures thrown into the middle of book for no reason, but they're okay. The filmographies at the end of the book are probably just an attempt to fill up space, as are the 20 or so little one-sentence facts that take-up one page a piece. If you're looking for a biography with a lot of substance look elsewhere, but if you're looking for a quick easy read then Golden Boy will do. Review by mattdamonfanpage.com.

In my opinion, this biography is the best one to date, even though it's from Britain. It goes through Matt's earlier work, like Rising Son and School Ties, up to and including Rounders. It was published in 1998, so it's lacking the newer films that he's done, but if you're a fan of Matt, I'd definitely recommend it.

It's about Ben too! The most interesting aspect of Matt is his childhood, what makes him tick. This book has lots of stuff about Boston and Matt as a little kid. I like it because it's about Ben too. They really are best friends. They've known each other for a long time. People think that Matt and Ben got famous overnight, but they didn't really. They worked really hard and deserve everything that they've accomplished. It wasn't fate or anything like that. They lived on Spam and top ramen for a long time like anybody else. After I read this book I felt like I got to know Matt better as a person instead of just the hotty that he is.
