Egbert is such a wonderful name.......2006-07-16

After years of searching, which ended with a 400 or so page photocopied version with missing pages, I found this book. This book is the only in depth and detailed english language record of almost all vegetation on Okinawa and the Ryukyu islands that I know of. The information within is in both Japanese (an older style) and English. I know of no other place that this book exists aside from the post library on Torii Station.

50-Hikes Series gets another excellent addition.......2003-11-22

If you're a fan of the 50 Hikes Series (like I am), you're going to fall in love this offering. As the title suggests, this book describes 50 hikes in the Bluegrass State, ranging in length from 0.9 to 13.4 miles. The entire state is covered, from Breaks Interstate Park and Big South Fork in the east to Land Between the Lakes and Mammoth Cave in the west. You'll find a hike for every ability and for every interest in here.

Each hike contains driving directions (starting at a nearby town), a map copied from the USGS topo maps, and a well-informed and well-written background on the area. A summary table in the front of the book helps you select a hike of interest quickly.

Most of the "famous" trails in Kentucky are described here, with a few lesser-known options thrown in. Of particular note are two cave "hikes" (i.e. tours) that are described in the Mammoth Cave section, something I'm not sure I've seen in a hiking guide before. These two count toward the 50-hikes total, so there are really 48 "traditional" hikes. Having done a considerable amount of hiking in Kentucky, there were a couple of trails that I was expecting to be included that were not. Perhaps they could have been if not for the cave tours, but Hiram's choice makes the book different and more interesting. This work still contains the "best and brightest" trails in Kentucky.

Having thoroughly enjoyed Hiram's earlier work "Exploring the Black Hills and Badlands," I was expecting big things out of this book. I was not disappointed. I have several guides to Kentucky hiking on my bookshelf, and this one is the best. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading about trails or is interested in Kentucky hiking.

Another Success!.......2002-12-23

Hiram Rogers has done it again! As an avid outdoorsman, Hiram's trail guides have helped me navigate my way through the Black Hills of South Dakota and some equally rewarding trails in Kentucky. Hiram's latest book incorporates wonderful photography and a meticulous description of what one will see and experience. Having read both books before traversing the respective trails, I could almost anticipate what was behind every bend. I look forward to his next release!

It took me a long time to get through it but I found it was worth the effort. In my business, it's important to keep abreast of what's happening globally and Haley came through. Very insightful.

Very timely book with contrarian perspective.......2006-05-01

So you are doing business in China and are spinning your wheels. You've read the culture and etiquette books and the ones on market potential. STOP! Read no further until you read the Chinese Tao. This unassuming (though not little) book packs a punch. If you want to make money in China as a private business, everything is conspiring you -- history, culture, laws and managers -- and mastering them, or atleast anticipating the punches, is key to success in China. A thoroughly enjoyable book, and Usha and George display wry humor through the sometimes weighty material. Recommended reading!

Well-written book which cuts wide swathe.......2006-04-16

I found this book very well-written, full of anecdotes and personal nuggets as well as statistical backing. In sum, it explained for me the contradictions, opportunities and pitfalls behind the "China miracle". I have read several books on China and I recommend this one over the rest.

A book of this kind is very difficult to write, as the authors chose to incorporate history, culture, modern business practices and the law (among other things!) to explain business success and failure in China. However, depsite their tall task, they did a good job. I especially liked the historical and political grounding combined with really fabulous personal interviews with CEOs. Some of the stories were fun (the golf story with Li Ka-Shing) and some were insightful (Pan Shi Yi's rise). I found the chapter on legal affairs in China useful but heavy going. However, regulatory risk is a big component of operating in China (just ask all those companies that have lost their patents there) and there is probably no "fun" way of communicating this. The authors' insights and recommendations were very useful.

This book should be read carefully and digested. I certainly do not advocate an overnight read (300+ pages!) but some chapters must absolutely be read before foriegners go to China -- and I think before the Chinese go abroad. George and Usha Haley have cut behind the hyperbole to reveal some very disturbing truths about this super power and the global business environment which it has changed for ever. More importantly, they have given us some ammunition to help us to control our destinies in this brave new world. A must read!

Dry textbook approach .......2006-04-15

I found some information useful and interesting. However, what was disappointing was the stilted writing of the authors. I often got the impression that they were too repetitive and presented the work as if it were an instructional manual. Also, there was the feeling that the book was edited in a cut and paste format. Overall, there were interesting anecdotes, but this book will never be a THE reference for foreigners trying establish businesses in China.

Serious book -- with a surprising twist.......2006-03-04

This is a serious book with some counter-intuitive conclusions. Logical, easy to read and based on a solid theoretical foundation - I recommend "chinese tao" heartily. At a minimum it will force you to think -- at its best it should bring about a serious retructuring of what it means for us to do business in China, and vice versa.

This is a good book for first time Poodle owners!.......2000-12-30

Pet Owner's Guide to the Poodle is a interesting book that contains material on the Poodle's origens, its uses and personality. It has several helpful tips on showing you poodle for the first time, as well as on breeding your first litter. The only thing that I would say is a drawback to this book is that it is fairly short; it doesn't contain AS MUCH information as it could. Still, it is informative and has many beautiful full-color photographs within its pages. I would recommend this book to people who have had limited experience with the breed and would just like to find a little more about their wonderful pets.

Finally, Succesful Gardening in New Mexico.......2000-03-14

I have lived in New Mexico for many years. I love working out in the yard but it's so tough to garden here. Last July I discovered Month-To-Month Gardening, New Mexico and finally I have a beautiful garden. The author made the book so easy to use, and the plant lists and How-to section gave me all the information I needed. She also provided a list of best and worst plants for New Mexico, so I wasn't wasting my time with plants that wouldn't grow here in New Mexico. I love the format of the book. Kelli Dolecek, the author has really made my gardening easy. Each month I simply follow the planting or maintanence tips that are listed for that month. Thanks so much for writing such a great book on gardening in New Mexico. I've recommended it to all of my friends.

This book is not devoid of any information. A good start for beginners. Although it is really a blank ledger to keep notes on as one gardens. I would not reccomend this book to anyone who has gardened before. There are some hints and ideas within the book, but unfortunately they are obvious. Due to how the book is laid out, one has to wait untill the apropriate month to gain the tip. Not enjoyable reading. As someone who has read his share of garden books I can honestly say that I was really let down by this one. Try Another.

Month-To-Month Gardening New Mexico is the best book I've read yet on successful gardening in New Mexico. The books offers hundreds of tips on things you can be doing to create a beautiful garden. I especially love the journal provided throughout the book. By journaling facts about my own garden, the book has become my own personal gardening guide. I love this book and would recommend it to anyone interested in successful New Mexico gardening.

I cannot imagine my life without the influence of Jack MacGowran as a crucial part of it. Young does an excellent job of bringing this amazing actor's life and work to the reader. But, after reading the book, please take the time to discover what Jack did best: Bringing the works of Samuel Beckett to life.

Fascinating look at a fascinating actor........1999-01-23

My interest in Irish theatre brought me to this book. What a find! A fascinating look at a fascinating actor. The author brings alive the work and times of MacGowran. A well-researched and thorough work recommended for any student of theatre. I was especially impressed with the variety of interview subjects. Made me do a search for MacGowran's available work on video. While not a big fan of Beckett, I was impressed by the relationship between the playwright and this ultimate interpreter of his works.

Canada's Prime Ministers brings these well-written biographies together for the first time in order to provide readers with an opportunity to reflect on the striking variety of personalities who have succeeded in climbing the summit of Canada's public life and the different challenges they faced in their determination to stay there.

What insights into the workings of our public life do the biographies of these fifteen leaders provide? Did these very different men have anything in common that determined their success? The DCB/DBC biographies make it clear that although there is no standard mould that shapes Canadian prime ministers, prime ministerial success depends on both "character and circumstance." The biographies suggest that one of the only commonalities between the prime ministers was an unstable mixture of personal ambition and a sense of obligation toward their country and their political party.
