5 out of 5 stars I can't say enough about these books!.......2002-04-02

The entire series is excellent!!! I have all four and I highly reccomend them. They teach science, literature, native american culture, and give children a respect for the natural world at the same time. (there is even the occasional bit of math thrown in). My son loves doing the activities with me! Excellent for unit studies!

5 out of 5 stars Great for Homeschooling Ecology Unit.......2001-08-02

We use this book as a homeschool social studies/ecology resource. Each section begins with a Native American story related to the topic of the chapter, then moves on to a discussion of the subject matter. Each section also has activities/experiments, questions for review and discussion, and recommendations for materials for further study. My kids really look forward to each lesson in this book, because the information is presented in a fun manner, and the activities are appropriate for a wide-range of ages!

...It is meant to accompany the book "Keepers of Life: Discovering Plants Through Native American Stories and Earth Activities for Children" The teachers guide is good, but it is not simply a teachers edition of the other book. It doesn't just have a bunch of answers (there are no tests or quizes in the first book anyway). It has suggestions and activities to add to the experience of the the first book, but it isn't necissary for you to have this book to get good use out of the main book, which is written to be used by a teacher anyway, not individual students.

                    Book Description

For decades, banks and brokerage houses have effectively convinced us that IRA holdings can be invested only in stocks and CDs. Then, with the sharp decline in the stock market, most of us could only stand by and watch as our retirement savings lost their accumulated value. Few knew that there was an alternative which offered both safety and growth. That alternative is real estate. That's right. Contrary to what you may have believed, it is perfectly legal to hold real estate investments in an IRA account—and to enjoy unprecedented returns. For nearly twenty years, IRA investment expert Patrick W. Rice has taught thousands of men and women his revolutionary strategies for using an IRA to create wealth based on real estate. In his new book, Mr. Rice shares all his moneymaking strategies with you. Within the pages of IRA Wealth, you will learn how to:

                    • Turn your old IRA into a self-directed account that puts you in charge.

                    • Buy income-producing properties, from rental houses to commercial buildings.

                    • Purchase high-yielding real estate-backed notes.

                    • Buy your dream retirement home now.

                    • Loan money to family and friends while building your IRA.

                    • Form limited liability companies that multiply your investment power.

                    • Buy yourself a thriving business—or a great job.

                    • Reduce your risks while boosting your returns.

Although it may be a little late to avoid the volatility of the stock market, the lesson has been simple: Don't put all your eggs in one basket. IRA Wealth offers an entirely new basket—one that holds golden eggs for a bright and rewarding future.

This book is a great guide to the concept of self-directed IRAs. Everyone with an IRA or 401K over $50,000 should be considering this option. There is no limit on the returns you can realise in your IRA account. Take this authors advise and go for mazimun returns on investment you control. It's legal and it makes sense. This is one of the stategies every women needs to understand to gain financial independence. Knowledge and a wealthy mindset as recommended in "A Man Is Not A Financial Plan!" helpA Man Is Not A Financial Plan! make women wealthy and wise.

5 out of 5 stars WOW! A way to invest and have control at the same time.......2007-07-26

This book got me started asking my financial advisor and the local bank financial advisors questions. I had been told I could not use any of my retirement funds to invest in real estate. I know better now and so do they.
Good book, this type of investing comes with risks and it is expensive because an intermediary has to be used (just a couple of things to weigh into the decision to or not to use). Not something to jump into lightly, good beginning book but recommend getting additional information on the subject and discussing it with your accountant prior to attempting it. If you do decide to plung in, do extensive research on the intermediary companies - be sure they are legit, have bullet proof references and actually ask to talk to current clients. Compare costs, services and reputation - cheapest could cost you dearly in the long run.

5 out of 5 stars Very good. Worth every penny, and then some. .......2006-10-29

A good read, with lots of helpful information. Frankly, I wish there were MORE books on the subject of self directed IRA's, particularly real estate investing via self-directed IRA's. That being said, I'm convinced this is one of the best books you'll find on the subject.

If you're looking to pump up your IRA with smart real estate investments, this is a good book to have on hand. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Good Roadmap for IRA Real Estate Investment.......2005-08-26

This book is a good general overview of the structure for investing self-directed IRA funds in real estate, as well as the major busines, tax and legal concerns involved. It is not overly general nor overly technical and is an easy read. It's a good roadmap for the first-timer.

3 out of 5 stars Simple, maybe too much so........2004-11-07

Very basic guide to IRA conversion/self-directed IRAs. Probably helpful to a novice, especially someone nervous about taking control of their own fund. For someone who is an experienced real estate investor, used to considering (eg) tax consequences, depreciation issues, leverage issues, etc., not very helpful at all. I was especially disappointed that there was not more specific information about what was actually necessary to convert 401Ks to self directed funds, and more analysis of what to look for in a fund administrator.

Ask not what your pets can do for you; ask what you can do for your pets! If our cats and dogs could talk, you can bet they'd have more than a few complaints about us to get off their chests.

Veteran magazine writer and "self-proclaimed pet expert" Cal Orey has channeled her dog Dylan's and cat Kerouac's biggest issues into a briskly readable, amusingly useful catalog of all the things they wish we knew. Researched with animal behaviorists, trainers, and veterinarians, 202 Pets' Peeves is a refresher course for knowledgeable pet lovers and a checklist for humans just starting out with their very first "fur child."

When it comes to pet nutrition, Orey thinks outside the can. Chuck that yucky generic budget kibble and share a little of that raw hamburger you're cooking for dinner with your cat. Give your dog an occasional slice of your whole-wheat crust veggie pizza. Dylan begs, "As a pack animal, I would share my prey with you." You take vitamin supplements. Don't your pets deserve their own?

Orey's sage warnings might help prevent a world of woe. With vet bills skyrocketing, pet medical insurance is becoming vital to avoid a possible heart-wrenching conflict between an unbearable financial burden and your pet's survival. Cats should be kept indoors during the Fourth of July and Halloween when they're most subject to malicious cruelty. You should have a disaster plan in place in case your pet needs to be evacuated when you aren't home.

Empathy and communication are two areas where humans need work. Dylan requires "quality hugging time" and gets depressed when he's scolded, suffering "bad dog day afternoons." Kerouac urges humans to respond when he has invited interaction, but to respect his privacy when he's busy doing his own thing.

Some of Orey's recommendations are debatable. Kerouac craves a hooded litter box for privacy, but some vets warn that enclosed boxes concentrate the dust that cats kick up around their mouths and noses. And it's hard not to raise an eyebrow at: "To experience an after-life dog reunion, contact a pet psychic who specializes in contacting deceased pets."

But 202 Pets' Peeves' strength lies in its rich diversity of pet-related topics, its provocative get-you-thinking style, and its creative solutions. How bout fitting your dog with a pair of kids' swimming goggles to protect its eyes during head-out-the-window car rides? Or, rather than declawing, fitting your cat with Soft Paws nail caps? Or installing a fish-tank screensaver for kittie's diversion? (Oddly, Kerouac fails to demand the greatest cat toy around: the laser pointer, which allows humans to run their felines all over the house while reclining in a strategically located easy chair.) Copious resource references help you find everything from animal behaviorists to doggie daycare to the Alley Cat Rescue website.

So listen to Dylan and Kerouac, two of the savviest "spokespets" around, and they'll help you make everybody's life smoother, safer, and more satisfying.

The book is great...I am having a hard time getting it away from my 12 year old who insists on reading it first. Last night she stayed up late finishing the cat peeves...and called me into her room to read several to me.

Cal's book, "Pets' Peeves" is a delight to read, and her love of animals shines through every page! If you really love your cat(s) as I do, buy this book and get a real education from your cat's point of view!

5 out of 5 stars If only they could talk!.......2003-05-17

                    What a great book!
When I first heard about it I thought that the author may have padded the numbers by making up a lot of bogus pet peeves. The fact of the matter is that every one of these peeves is legitimate, and in some cases eye-opening.
And although much of the book is written in a light and humorous tone, there are also some items in it, (giving them cheap food, neglecting vet visits, dental health, etc.) that are quite serious.
If you've had pets all your life and you're looking for an insight into their little minds, then you really should not only get this book, but refer to it often.
If you're thinking about getting your first dog or cat, then you should get this book first, and avoid all the little mistakes first before turning your pet into a neurotic basket case.

What I was expecting was a guide on how I could start/build/create a hydroponic garden from scratch. What i got was a simpletons generic, vague something that really taught me nothing. I don't need the history of it, or the theories behind it. The title said 'simplified workbook' but it taught me nothing, I'm at square one which is "how do I build and start a hydroponic garden? What supplies and where do I get them?"

3 out of 5 stars As it says..........2004-08-02

It is a beginner's introduction to hydroponics. While it is an exceptionally good overview and a great place to begin studying the topic, it is by no means a canon on the topic. Grab this book, read it cover to cover, photocopy it's tables to tack to the wall in whatever area you do your plant working. It will give you a skeleton, but your flesh is earned via experience and communicating with other gardeners, especially in better hydroponics forums on the internet.

These forums, however, can be confusing without the background provided by books such as this.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Intro to a Technology with Proven Potential.......2004-06-19

Hydroponics... presents an open and honest introduction to the subject of growing plants without soil, covering its long history (especially before it was called 'hydroponics' and before Western Europeans happened upon it), the basic principles underlying hydroponics and the more common methods of the field from the simple to the complex. It also includes a chapter on troubleshooting, provides copious resources in the form of a book list for further reading and suppliers to hydroponic growers (from backyard gardeners to commercial growers), and is an all-around accessible text for both beginning non-gardeners and to gardeners of all ability ranges. It also lays out the need for and benefits derived from hydroponics without embellishment, and presents just a small amount of the technology's practical applications and tremendous (and proven) potential.

However, based on this text alone, the reader has no real idea just how big the field of soil-less gardening has become. For example, a sizable amount of commercial tomato production in the United States is done hydroponically, and virtually all of the fresh lettuce in Japan is produced this way. Additionally, the technology has proven itself to be commercially viable for the production of a variety of specialty crops. After reading this book, I could easily think of five or six spin-offs for potential research.

Probably the best endorsement for the power and capability of this applied technology is the fact that more research is done in hydroponics by commercial growers and big multinationals than is done by (and this is in the United States context) both universities and the USDA. As an aside, although not originally intended as an application, more than a few enterprising individuals have co-opted its utilization, and advanced its development in order to cultivate, produce and distribute cannabis!

This in turn may or may not explain the reticence of the United States government, through the USDA, to fund research into improved hydroponic methods. However, a more reasonable possibility may be that the technology is first a proven concept and second is very highly developed. Still, there is considerable room for creative thinking, improvement, improvisation and innovation, as many an enterprising law-breaker has demonstrated.

On the other hand, foreign governments in arid regions of the world, such as Israel, the greater Middle East and the North African region, have invested heavily in hydroponics research as a means to simultaneously produce food for domestic requirements and to conserve scarce water resources. Israel in particular is very aggressive in its attempts to use hydroponics as a basis for export-led agricultural production.

Considering how long this book has been on the market (some 27 years), and how bad the situation in the world is with regard to hunger and food insecurity, and environmental degradation, I have to wonder aloud why environmental types like Lester Brown, Helen Caldicott and environmental groups such as the Worldwatch Institute, Sierra Club and Greenpeace have not bothered to champion this technology. Given all of the benefits of the technology, and the number of greedy corporate fingers using it to rake in beaucoup bucks, you have to wonder exactly where the priorities of many of the so-called 'eco-advocacy' groups lay, as they should be grinning from ear to ear over this water conserving (and in many cases water recycling), decreased energy, pesticide and fertilizer utilizing technology.

Good growing information but lacks details. Not a complete guide but worth the price for sure. I got a few good ideas from this one, making it a worthy purchase. Beginner's Guide to Herb Gardening is pretty good but it could have been better but the first part of the book was wounderful...the designs for gardens i thought had wounderful photographs and good instructions for constructing them. But i believe it lacked real gardening information and i just started gardening last spring so i was looking for something to really help a novice, sorry but i did not find that. Though i give 5 stars for the photography.WOUNDERFUL!

                            Book Description

For years, a close circle of friends have been thrilled and enchanted by actress Ronnie Claire Edwards' vivid and hilarious stories-tall tales and yarns that have earned her a reputation as one of Hollywood's greatest raconteurs. Now, for the first time, Edwards has taken pen in hand to write those precious stories down so she can share them with a larger audience. And the strangest thing is-they're all true!

In a unique voice reminiscent of both Mark Twain and Eudora Welty, Edwards recounts the adventures that made hers a life unlike any other, filled with the quirky, the hair-raising, and the absurd. She writes about performing at rowdy (not to mention dangerous) mining camps, her strange and mystical experiences with the gypsies, and her true-life adventures as the Knife-Thrower's Assistant. Ronnie Claire Edwards creates a style all her own, what Fannie Flagg, in her Foreword, calls "Oklahoma Gothic." If there wasn't such a thing before-there certainly is now.

5 out of 5 stars A Hilarious Memoir of a Most Eccentric Family.......2001-01-11

This book clearly deserves more than five stars.

To write a book this funny, you have to have good material and be a brilliant story teller. Ms. Ronnie Claire Edwards has both to draw on, and makes wonderful use of them in this madcap memoir of summer melodramas in mining towns, being taken by gypsies, carnival acts, and alligator farms. Just when you think that you have been entertained royally, she switches the stories into a theme of who she is. The result is a brilliant portrayal of a talented actress.

Many people will primarily know Ms. Edwards from her role as Corabeth Walton Godsey in the television series, The Waltons. Her friends, however, know her better by her wonderful stories. In a foreward by Ms. Fannie Flagg, you find out that Ms. Flagg has "constantly dogged Ronnie Claire to sit down and write her always keen and hilarious observations . . . ." I, for one, am glad that she prevailed. I think you, too, will be. To give you a flavor for the book, Ms. Flagg characterizes it as "Oklahoma Gothic -- if there is such a thing. And if there wasn't, there is now." The reference to Oklahoma is because Ms. Edwards is from Oklahoma, and many of the stories relate to Oklahoma.

The book begins with the true tale of how Ms. Edwards became a knife thrower's target. She was 15 and had run off to work with a carnival as a ticket taker. The knife thrower was Great Shoshone Mahaffee, "half Indian, half Irish, and all drunk . . . particularly troublesome in a knife thrower." Her predecessor, Fifi, was starting to twitch. Apparently, she didn't need to worry about the cuticle on one of her pinkies any more. So Mr. Mahaffee "was looking for new blood." In that brief tale, you get a sense of the amazing wit, story telling ability, and writing skill that Ms. Edwards brings to her material.

As interesting as her experiences were, her family's were often even more unusual and humorous. "My family's ecentricity was God-given . . . ." It will spoil the story if I tell too much, but consider that her mother and father called her by totally different names. To her mother, she was Ronnie Claire. To her father, she was Sophronia Gertrude or sometimes, just Gertie. She looked for her birth certificate to check, and her mother said it had been lost. Her father said the mother was wrong, and she was suffering from "transient apoplexy." The mother said the father was doing this "just to be perverse."

When her mother and father die, her siblings take whatever possessions they want and send what they cannot bear to throw away to Ms. Edwards. She takes you through these dusty boxes and shares the memories they bring. After you learn more about her family, their friends and neighbors, and those they help, you will agree with her statement that "is it any wonder I became an actress?"

My two favorite humorous sections here were Uncle Homer's trunk (you won't believe Uncle Homer) and a series of letters from her father describing her mother's false teeth.

Then at the end, she finds a bundle of the earliest photographs and other keepsakes about her own life in a scrapbook. In there is a birth certificate. And what do you think it says? You'll just have to read the book to find out, but it's well worth the read just to find out the answer to that one question.

Ms. Edwards then sums up nicely about how all of this rich background of humorous human poignancy helped her become the person she is.

After you have finished enjoying this remarkable book, I suggest that you take a look at the legacy that you will be leaving your children through the perspective of their experience in opening up your possessions after you are deceased. What will they find? What will they think about? Then, go out and make some new and better memories with them.

Find the brilliance and fun in every moment!
