5 out of 5 stars Great Guide To Denver, With A Few Omissions.......2005-08-12

CITY SMART: DENVER is a great guide to the city of Denver. It contains a listing of all the shopping, recreation, and dining you could want to experience while visting there. However, in the list of radio stations, many are not mentioned, including, especially, classic rock giant KRFX. However, you still should not pass this book up.

4 out of 5 stars Good Denver Specific Guide.......2000-05-20

I am practically a Denver native and I was very surprised by how much there is to do in Denver! The book gives great insight into all aspects that make Denver unique, as well as giving good tips to make anyone's visit enjoyable. I bought the book to show some friends around town, and now I have used it to keep myself busy on a few weekends as well.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good for a businessperson, BUT there are better State guides.......2001-06-12

Fodor's excels as a business person's guide. The Capitols and the key cities in these three states get the lion’s share of ink (GA: Atlanta, Savannah, NC: Charlotte, The Triad Area, The Triangle Area, SC: Charleston, Myrtle Beach, Columbia). IF you are going to be in JUST these cities, this would be a VERY GOOD guide to have. The rest of the areas in each state get a quick ‘once over’.

Fodor’s dining and lodging recommendations are very good and are the best each city has to offer. You won’t be disappointed by any of these listings. However, they tend to be for affluent travelers and, though the South excels in great bed and breakfasts, none are listed. The nightlife and the arts recommendations are very good. Sports and shopping sections are also reliable and comprehensive. Also, very helpful, Fodor has various “Great Itineraries” for each state broken down into 3 days, 7 days and 10 days.

What is obviously lacking are a lodging index and a restaurant index. Thus, if you have a recommended restaurant you want to look up, you have to go through all the restaurant pages 'til you stumble across the name you seek or miss seeing it completely. Another significant short coming, especially considering the 2001 title of this guide, is the lack of website addresses or email addresses for any of the listed hotels. This penalizes you if you want to check out the hotel rooms, interior and/or exterior photos and then ask questions about special rates via email.

I am a firm believer that any guide book worth its salt has to guide you with both words and support those words with quality maps. This guide has excellent dining and lodging maps but just for Atlanta and Charleston! What a shame to short change the other cities. Also the guide encourages ‘walking tours’ but gives no ‘walking maps’, you have to use the city map to figure it out. The pull-out color three state map is a great addition. And, the few regional or city maps that are included are very helpful, and the maps clearly show you sites to visit, but with maps, more is better, and this guide begs for MORE specific area maps.

Finally, and this is true of all Fodor’s guides, is the insertion of irritating and unwanted hard page advertisement for banks and calling cards. The purchase price ... is more than enough for Fodor's to make a profit, but it chooses to afflict its readers with protruding advertising to increase its profits. NOT!

For those traveling to the cities noted above, this guide would be very good and highly recommended, BUT for those who want to tour these states at large there are better State guides (see my reviews of Georgia Handbook: Moon Travel or Hidden Georgia: Ulysses Press). Recommended 3 1/2 stars

        Book Description

Travel Smart: Georgia takes the hassle out of travel by recommending only the best places to eat, stay, and visit. Other travel guides give you names, addresses, and basic descriptions, but this guide goes beyond that, giving you the best driving routes and opinionated write-ups. With an easy to use rating system that quickly shows which places you really shouldn't miss, this guide features Atlanta sightseeing and dining, walking tours of old Savannah, activities in Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest and Okeefenokee Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, and lots more. Also included are special-interest itineraries for regional arts and crafts, wildlife, and Civil War sites. "One of the few travel series that rates sightseeing attractions. That's a handy feature. It helps to have some guidance so that every minute counts." - San Diego Union-Tribune

              Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very good book........2007-09-16

This is probably the best AP Statistics book out there. It's very comprehensive and detailed.
If you read and understand most of the material on here, there's almost no reason you will not get a 4 or 5.
The only problem is with the practice tests. Many of the questions in the practice tests involve number crunching rather then testing if you know the concepts of statistics. When i took this test, i was quite surprised to see that almost all the questions were concept questions. I barely touched my calculator on this exam.

5 out of 5 stars crammed full of basketball problems.......2007-07-07

One thing that is seriously annoying about this otherwise solid book is that the author is apparently a major fan of professional basketball, and thinks nothing of interlarding the text with dozens of arcane references to the sport.

              Here's an example:

"Consider the historgram of the yearly average assists per game figures for Jeff Hornacek (Phoenix and Houston)." (p. 11) As if it's not enough to mention an obscure player, must we pedantically specify that he played with both Phoenix and Houston?! (This is incorrect anyhow: it should be Phoenix and Philadelphia.) Surely this silliness will help to confuse any foreign or ESL user of this text.

Thus if you're unclear on such basketball abstrusia as rebounds, assists, and three-point shots, this book is likely to strike you as a self-indulgent slog.

On the other hand, if you love basketball as much as Sternstein evidently does, you'll find the text both invigorating and relevant.

5 out of 5 stars great book for review.......2007-05-30

this book provides a very comprehensive review of the whole course. i read all of the sections and did all the practice problems at the end of each section. though i didn't have much time working on the 6 practice tests, the information i got from the review part itself helped me greatly on the AP test. i just took it a couple weeks ago and im confident that i got a 5 on it. w0000t

2 out of 5 stars not the greatest.......2007-05-13

unfortunately i didnt look at any other ap stats review books since i was forced to get this one by my teacher but this one wasnt that great. I went into the AP test thinking the questions would mirror those on Baron's practice exams but they didnt. Also, many of the answer explanations in barons arent sufficient. Its not a terrible book and it probably helped me a bit with practicing, but i could have done without it.

5 out of 5 stars This one is the Best review!!.......2006-08-20

As a teacher of AP Stats for 7 years, I have found this book to be the best and I encourage my students to purchase it. I love the questions at the end of each section and the fact that answers are explained in detail for not only the free response, but multiple choice. The practice exams at the end are also wonderful and it tells how to get a score for your efforts. This book has become my "stat bible" for my reviews leading up to that first week in May! Thanks to Barron's!

Equally valuable to prospective test takers is the author's 15-chapter topic review, covering virtually everything they will encounter on the actual exam. Topics for review are divided into four general themes: Exploratory Analysis, Planning a Study, Probability, and Statistical Inference. Additional multiple-choice and free-response questions with answers are presented at the end of all 15 chapters. Detailed appendices include exam-taking advice, an AP scoring guide, a guide to basic uses of TI-83/TI-84 calculators, and more.

The beautifully illustrated Plants of Love explores the history, culture, and religious beliefs related to plants used as aphrodisiacs. There are an amazing number of plants thought to help with impotency, enhance lovemaking, or even cause people to fall in love. Christian Ratsch employs medieval European paintings, Egyptian hieroglyphics, Tibetan folk art, and erotic Asian silkscreens to enhance the lively text, stories, and information on the safe use of these special plants. An eye-opening array of plants and herbs--including nettles, asparagus, seeds of the iboga bush, and ginseng--are discussed in detail to explore and illustrate the science and symbolism of aphrodisiacs throughout history.

                                      Book Description

Susan Sarandon's memorable performances have made her an American icon. Passionate and outspoken, she's often controversial. Why did Sarandon choose acting as a career? What is her acting philosophy? How does she select roles? What motivates her to promote social and political causes? Why do some people object to this? How do critics rate her work and her movies? Betty Jo Tucker answers these questions and more in an analysis of Sarandon's achievements from a film critic's perspective. Tucker's book also includes an annotated filmography of Sarandon's movies and selected reviews of her key films.

                                      4 out of 5 stars Fascinating Biography.......2006-04-23

In this fascinating biography, Betty Jo Tucker avoids those dreary details that fill the pages of so many movie star bios and gets right to the nitty-gritty. Tucker includes interesting details of Sarandon's amazing career, aspects of her love life, past and present, and includes a extensive list of sources for digging deeper into the magic of Susan Sarandon. This book covers each of Sarandon's movies, allowing the reader to revisit those great characters from Annie Savoy from Bull Durham to Louise of Thelma and Louise. We learn about Susan's passions, what her peers really think about her and just enough of her personal life to satisfy. Tucker takes the reader behind the scenes to those private causes that touch Sarandon's heart and motivate this otherwise private movie star to speak out. If you love biographies but flip past those tedious chapters recalling the subject's childhood in endless detail, this is a must read. If you love movies, you will enjoy it even more.

Susan Sarandon: A True Maverick is one of the best star profiles to come along in a long time. It is a wonderfully light and entertaining look at one of films greatest stars.

Compulsivly readable, it is not really a biography but more of a Sarandon file, filled with information about her life and career. We get to see Sarandon from the point of view of her work collegues, her friends, her family. We get to know the whole Susan, not just parts of her.

What I loved most about this book was it's wonderful writing and it's set up. Betty Jo talks to us, rather than at us, like most biographies. Instead of being boring, reptetitive and boring, Betty Jo presents us with a beautiful look at Sarandon the movie star, the friend, the activist and the mother.

If that's not good enough, Betty Jo has also compiled what is most likely the first annotated filmography of all of Susan Sarandon's films as well as selected film reviews of her work by various other film critics, a look at Susan's career, and opinions of Susan from people who have worked with her or known her.

Susan Sarandon: A True Maverick is no cardboard cut out biography. Instead, it is a treat to read, full of wonderful information about one of, if not the most beautiful woman working in film today. An amazing read and one that I will read again and again.

I may be a little biased...my film review of The Witches of Eastwick is in the back! But I'm not biased really. Aside from my review, Susan Sarandon: A True Maverick is just one hell of a great read.
