      Book Description

As our lives become more urbanized, many of us have lost the ability to name these beautiful flowers, whether in cities or countryside, in gardens or conservation areas. This comprehensive field guide will appeal to expert and beginner alike, with over 600 wild-flower specimens from the woodlands, grasslands, and chalk downlands and the mountainous, aquatic, and maritime habitats of Britain and Ireland. Each entry gives Latin and common names; descriptions of flowers, fruit, and leaves; and habitat. Anecdotes on historical background, medicinal or herbal uses, and common folklore breathe life into the text. Chapters also discuss the importance of wild flowers in their ecosystems, conservation and endangered species and offer advice on designing your own wildflower garden.

easy book with easy categories so you can work out what the flower is by its shape. has colour drawings which help, and gives all the names, local as well. some of the wild flowers turn out to be ones we buy and plant ie. not so wild. Very useful when you come across a plant and can't think what it is.

                    Book Description

Food, fashion, and finance are the three raisons d'être of Italy's northern jewel — this book surveys them all, including world-class restaurants, beautiful boutiques, hotels, a newly resurgent music scene, and stunning lake and mountain getaways. The new edition features updated maps with venues marked by color, an all-new chapter focusing on cultural background, and 22 new sidebars.

                    Customer Reviews:

                    5 out of 5 stars Extremely useful resource - before/during/after trip.......2006-10-02

As a frequent traveler, used this for a short visit to Milan also scheduled on short notice. Found it very valuable in both pre-trip planning (figuring out layout of city, street maps, metro map, restaurants) and also "on-the-ground" while actually in Milan. Referred to it numerous times during trip - the links from the text to the street maps are excellent. (It's just like your "London A-Z"...plus recommendations.)

Much more useful/informative than either Frommer's or (surprisingly) Lonely Planet, which both often lack perspective because of their target traveler-markets. This covered both ends of the spectrum nicely.

Consider this as a serious alternative to the more-established travel publishers. Happy trails.

3 out of 5 stars Lacks detail but is up-to-date.......2003-08-21

I purchased this book after being extremely happy with "Time Out Amsterdam" but was disappointed. The Milan version lacks detail and has limited restaraunt and hotel listings. It is the most recent Milan book available (at least when I bought it) but I thought Time Out could have done better.

3 out of 5 stars Fairly current but misses the mark.......2003-08-06

I am a little disappointed with this Time Out guide. I have the Time Out Amsterdam guide and found it very useful but have not found the same in the Milan guide. While it is, as of summer 2003, one of the most updated guides, it somehow misses the essence of Milan. Granted the area is not particularly touristy, but both the restaurant and shopping recommendations were lacking.

Italy's financial capital is famous as a fashion mecca too, but there's more to Milan than moolah and moda — and it's all here in Time Out Milan. This updated guide reveals the gastronomic secrets of Lombardy and the vibrant aperitivo scene in Milan. The guide contains current insider info on Milanese fashion shopping itineraries; ski resorts and spas in Lombardy's mountains; urban, suburban, and rural cycle tracks; art excursions from prehistoric rock carvings in the Valcamonica to Milan's thriving gallery scene. Featuring updated maps, new sidebars, new color photographs, and with all entries rechecked, Time Out Milan uses local writers, experts, and residents to guide readers through this distinctive, historic region of vast plains, Alpine heights, and urban pleasures.

                            Book Description

Retirement does not have to mean the end of life—in fact it can mean a whole new beginning to the life you never had time to explore. In HOW TO RETIRE HAPPY, WILD, AND FREE, best-selling author Ernie J. Zelinksi shows that the key to enjoying an active and satisfying retirement is dependent on much more than just having adequate financial resources. It means paying attention to all aspects of life, including leisure activities, creative pursuits, physical and mental well-being, and solid social support. With its friendly format, lively cartoons, and captivating quotations, Zelinski's guide offers inspirational advice on how to follow your dreams instead of someone else's, how to put your retirement in proper perspective, and how to enjoy life after work.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books on retirement attitudes.......2007-10-16

                            I love this book!

Most speak about planning, goals, etc but this one discusses the emotional aspects of retirement and how to process your thoughts when you have time on your hands.

This should be required reading for everybody....retired or not!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book Available on the Non-financial Aspects of Retirement.......2007-08-08

I first noticed that "How to Retire Happy, Wild, and Free" appeared in Amazon.com's "Customers who bought this item also bought" list for virtually any other significant book on retirement. So I bought Zelinski's book. I was not disappointed.

Two reviewers state that this book is the same as Zelinski's international bestseller "The Joy of Not Working". This is not true. Although the two books have some similarities, "How to Retire Happy, Wild, and Free" is strictly for the retired or soon-to-be retired, whereas "The Joy of Not Working" is directed -- not only at the retired and the unemployed -- but also at working people who want a great work/life balance.

If I were a personal coach who gives advice to the newly retired, I would recommend "How to Retire Happy, Wild, and Free" to my clients as the best non-financial retirement book. If I was a corporate human resource manager, I would be purchasing this book in quantity to give to all of my company's retiring employees.

In short, "How to Retire Happy, Wild, and Free" is the best book I have read on the personal aspects of retirement. The chapters are devoted to the consideration of activities that enhance body, mind, and spirit. Zelinski quotes from many sources, but his attitude is reflected in this excerpt from his own writing:

"You will have attained true freedom in this world when you can get up in the morning when you want to get up; go to sleep when you want to go to sleep; and in the interval, work and play at the things you want to work and play at -- all at your own pace. The great news is that retirement allows you the opportunity to attain this freedom."

1 out of 5 stars The same as Joy of not Working.......2007-08-05

This is pretty much the same book. So get one or the other but not both.

4 out of 5 stars GOOD, nOT GREAT.......2007-06-22

This is one of the better books on retirement. It's presented in a light, informal manner which I enjoyed. It's also a fast read. And with retirement looming one doesn't always have time to pour over a lenthy, dry book.

I'sd recommend this book for the semi savvy near retiree. If you're a complete beginning without a lot of knowledge about saving or nivesting this may not be oyur best bet.

And for anyone interested in getting a better return and finsding financial security i recommend The Millionaire Mind. The Millionaire Mind

4 out of 5 stars How to Retire Wild, Happy and Free.......2007-05-15

Very good advice for anyone either retired or within 5 years of retirement. Much infomation on the softer side of retirement most people don't consider before termination of thier work life.

In picture-and-text format, Ostrom lends his deep knowledge and devilish sense of humor to writing about the wildlife, the vistas, the peaks, the camaraderie, and even the tragedies that this group of hiking and climbing elders have experienced.

Written by Geoff Stebbings (the establisher of the National Collection of Award-winning Irises), The Gardener's Guide To Growing Irises is a professional-quality botanical guide profusely illustrated with full-color photographs, and suitable for flower gardens of all caliber and experience levels. Extensively detailed information concerning a wide variety of irises makes The Gardener's Guide To Growing Irises an eminently suitable and "user friendly" reference, from choosing the right strain of iris, to properly caring for and presenting it. The Gardener's Guide To Growing Irises is an essential and strongly commended addition to any dedicated personal or professional gardening collection, as well as an academic Horticultural Studies reference library.

For a person who needed information on growing Irises outside England and the Pacific Northwest, this would be not be the best first purchase. I can't judge how well it would describe cultural best practice in England but with Irises climate is extremly important. What works in one climate will not work in another, Iris Borer, for example, only lives in North America but it is a terrible pest there. It would make lovely winter reading for most of us because of the artistic photographs and excellent botany of the various Iris species. However don't expect to be able to buy many of the varities shown, the English have their own set of Iris varities and only rarely import the American ones.

3 out of 5 stars Good reading for Iris lovers.......2001-03-23

"The Gardener's Guide to Growing Irises" by Geoff Stebbings is more readable and less usable than many of the gardening books I own. It is a wonderful book to curl up with in the winter when your garden is covered with snow. The pictures are beautiful and in color, although I wish there were more of them (I think I've been spoiled by the photos in the Iris catalogues that show up in my mailbox every Spring). The author has definite opinions as to which varieties work best in the garden. In his chapter on "The Value of Iris in the Garden" he states the following:

"Perhaps it is because the bearded iris show such variety that many gardeners do not look elsewhere in the genus for garden plants. This is a mistake, however, because although the deep, blackcurrent purple of 'Superstition' may have a velvety sheen, a ruffling and size that are hard to match, the deep purple of forms of 'I. Chrysographes' are augmented by bright golden markings on a flower of refinement and poise that makes the other look clumsy and almost grotesque."

The tall, bearded Iris also gets short shrift in the popular "The Well-Tended Perennial Garden" by Tracy DiSabato-Aust, but I would venture to say that theirs is the minority opinion among gardeners. Most of us love the bearded irises for their gorgeous colors and perfumes, and in spite of their short season of bloom. This book's longest chapter is on the Tall Bearded Iris, so it can't be said that the author neglects them. There are also chapters on the Siberian Iris, the Pacific Coast Iris, the Water Iris, the Spuria Iris, the Stinking Iris, the Dwarf Bulbous Iris, and "Iris for the Specialist".

As interesting as this book is to read, it is not really organized to help you locate a quick paragraph on what to do about the Iris borer grub that you just discovered in your 'Beverly Sills' rhizome. In fact 'iris borer' isn't even listed in the index. If you flip to the lone page on 'pests', you won't find them there, either-just a few miscellaneous paragraphs on aphids and wet rot.

Buy "The Gardener's Guide to Growing Irises" if you love irises and would like to learn more about them. However, you might want to look elsewhere for a straightforward guide to growing and caring for these lovely flowers.

I thought this book was especially good for letting us know the real Michael Caine - his East London background, his dogged determination to succeed and his progression towards becoming an icon in the movie industry. The revelation about his unknown long lost brother was a surprise. Overall well worth reading.

                                                              Book Description

From the turn of the century to the late 1950s horse-drawn narrow-boats became a rarer and rarer sight on Britain's canals. Carrying a wide variety of cargoes to such destinations as the Potteries, the textile mills of Lancashire, the papermills of London, the colleges of Oxford, they struggled on against increasing competition from rail and road traffic to maintain their place in the country's economy. Yet little has been written abou the families who lived and worked on these boats - in particular the women. Drawing on recorded interviews with the few boatwomen left who were born and bred on horse-drawn boats, Sheila Stewart has recounted their experiences as seen through the eyes of an illiterate boatwoman, travelling mainly on the Oxford Canal through the Great War, the Depression, the Second World War, and the decline of the canals. It is a poignant account of astonishing courage and resilience, capturing a unique way of life during the first sixty years of this century.

Sheila Stewart spent over five years researching this book and developing the character of Rose Ramlin from interviews with Oxford boatwomen. The book is thoroughly enjoyable--once you get used to the Oxford accent, which is truly authentic. The story of Rose, her husband (Moy'chap, as he's called) and her children and their life carting supplies around the canals of Oxfordshire is inspiring and eye-opening. Even better if you've been to Oxford. Many of the names, places and lock names will be familiar to you. A wonderful first person account!
