An excellent guide!!.......2004-09-23

I went to London earlier this year and bought the book because it was exactly the type of thing I wanted to do during my trip. The book was terrific!! We did several of the walking tours, and each was right on the mark. We decided to do the Jack the Ripper walk on our own instead of with a tour group. Each direction was precise. We were extremely impressed!!! This book is a great idea for those visiting London!!

Well Written and Very Atmospheric.......2003-06-23

I really enjoyed reading this book and following the routes. Richard Jones is a compelling storyteller and his eyes for direction and detail is excellent. I purchased the book prior to my recent vacation in London and read it cover to cover on the plane over. The first route I followed was the Jack the Ripper Walk and I found it spinechilling. Whitechapel seems as eerie and crime-ridden now as it did back in 1888. I took Jones's suggestion and purchased the A-Z of jack the Ripper before setting out and so was well prepared with the additional information required. I found the Tower of London walk a superbly laid out route around the old fortress. It kept me well away from the crowds and in some of the towers I was totally alone (at least I hope I was.)The text captured perfectly the ambience of each section of the tower's towers.

Yes a lot of the stories are short, but this they are crisply written, are extremely well told and cram a lot of detail into the space. And with 25 walks plus a detailed index crammed into its 160 pages it offers extremely good value for money. The book is first and foremost an "on the hoof guide" and is not a detailed investigation into ghosts and hauntings. It is fun and informative and the directions are very detailed but also, and this wasn't the case with several other guides I had purchased, accurate. Jones's directions across Hampstead Heath for example, were extremely easy to follow. In short this is a boook that will appeal both to the armchair walker and the avid wanderer.

Very well written, but lacks depth of the actual hauntings.......2003-02-01

I found this book to be extremely well written. Although I have not yet been to London, the directions and maps seem to be superb. In addition to the basic ghost "tour," the author also treats the reader to nice little stops along the tours -- like pubs and eateries. Estimated tour times are also given so one can plan their day.
The actual book itself is very well made. Higher quality than most paperbacks. It should easily hold up to heavy use while touring the streets of London.

HOWEVER, I was greatly disappointed with the book because very little detail is given to the actual hauntings and stories for which the tours are based. I found this book bland and boring because it lacks the details (historical or eye-witness accounts) that help draw and keep the reader's attention. Often a chapter consists of more directions than actual ghost stories.
I have read dozens, perhaps hundreds, of books on ghosts and hauntings for which I have created a baseline used to judge other ghosts and haunting books. I had to force myself to finish reading this book. A first for me when it comes to a true-story ghost book.
I would give the book 5 stars for directions, maps, and touring information. However, the actual stories of hauntings are so short and lack-luster that I dropped the overall rating to 2 stars.

A MUST-HAVE Book if you're visiting London.......2001-03-06

EXCELLENT book. Very well written and moves right along. Fantastic, simple maps that look easy to follow--going to give them the test next time I'm in London. Even without being in London, just reading the text was extremely enjoyable. I've read TONS of ghost books; and he's found haunts of London I didn't even know existed; along with the "old standard" ghosts of Tower of London. This book is INDISPENSIBLE if you're visiting London--or if you just need a good scare!

A splendid companion for rambles in London!.......2000-07-02

Even for those who don't believe in ghosts! It's a good idea to have some sort of a quest when you travel, whether it be the search for the driest pub cider or the quintessential Wren spire. Without some such unifying theme, travel can become a pointless round of obligatory tourist stops. Hunting hauntings is an excellent quest because it inevitably involves two of the main joys of travel in England--history and atmosphere. I have spent four fascinating vacations in England seeking the most haunted site in the Isles and the ultimate English garden--with liberal dashes of theatre and museums for variety-and still I have only scratched the surface of each subject. "Walking Haunted London" was a wonderful addition to my most recent trip. I took the entire Chiswick walk (backwards) and did portions of the Old City, City of the Dead, Westminster, and Covent Garden walks. All creepily enjoyable! Not only are the walks well-described and the ghosts' stories enthusiastically recounted, but the book gives good hints about other important matters, such as cosy pubs and interesting historical sites on or near the routes. (By the way, I understand that Richard Jones also guides the "Original Psychic Ghost Walk" in London many nights of the year. I haven't taken this walking tour myself, but if his storytelling skills match his storywriting skills, it's probably great. If interested, check the TimeOut listings when in town.)

This book follows the case of the Enfield Poltergeist,a fascinating haunting which asks many questions but which unfortunately provides few answers, In 1977,a working class family in England became the focus of an apparent haunting. It began with banging noises and the movement of objects and developed into one of the most controversial cases in psychical research. Guy Playfair and the late Maurice Grosse spent years with the family documenting events and watching as a parade of skeptics,mediums and fellow psychic investigators passed through the small apartment. This book doesn't "prove" the existence of ghosts or even demonstrate that this case was based on real paranormal events- Grosse and Playfair both were unsure of the nature of the events they were witnessing. This book is sometimes tedious,but is an important document and should be read by anyone seriously interested in hauntings and poltergeists. Was it the result of trickery or mental illness? Ultimately Playfair and Grosse committed to the paranormal nature of most of what they documented.

Not A Magic Pill.......2007-10-03

I did like the book. I read it the first day I received it. It had some information in it that was unknown to me. Most of the information listed in the book is common sense. Like contacting your creditors directly, trying to lower your interest rates and setting a budget. This book would be great as a debt eliminator for dummies. For anyone looking for more of an in depth read and examples you will be disappointed. There were some extra resources listed and mock forms to use with creditors. This book is by no means a magic pill. Don't expect that from any book. You still have to work for it. You have to give up something to pay your debt.
I did order another book from this author. I hope it provides more information than this one.
This is a great read for begginers. The book has alot of general knowledge information. Would like to have read more on what exactly to do to bring your credit score up and the right mixture of credit accounts to have.

Good Common Sense Approach!.......2007-09-03

Lynette Khalfani really says it the way it is. She takes a no nonsense approach to zero debt. A great book for those needing a kick in the pants to get their finances in order and a great reminder for those who are progressing to financial freedom.

This is a easy read with great examples and suggestions to help one achieve thier financial goals. Highly recommended.

This book will start you back on the road to recovery! Get back what bad credit took from you using some of these simple easy to understand methods in this book. If you follow plan, your credit score will eventually start going toward the positive.

Practical Advice for Money Management.......2007-05-16

When you owe a lot of money, the last thing you want to do is read a book. However, the smart insights and 30-day plan contained in Zero Debt have the potential to curb negative spending habits for life.

I appreciate the way Khalfani breaks down the process of debt reduction into smaller chunks that anyone can manage. Even if you follow half of her advice, you'll make a positive impact on spending and saving habits.

Aside from the book's adult target, it also has merit for college students, as colleges rarely bring a speaker such as me on campus to provide them with lessons on debt management before problems start.

Khafani surprised me by suggesting that readers pay for their credit report, especially because it can be obtained free of charge once a year. She did, however, mention the free option on a later page.

Use the advice in this book one day at a time. By month's end you'll realize and put into action good habits to minimize debt.

Okay read on financial fitness.......2007-05-16

While this book was a quick, easy read, got me fired up about my finances and gave me good real life examples, I really was hoping for more details and more information that I wasn't already aware of. I was hoping to read something new. Still I give it 4 stars, because the information was clearly stated, very true and easy to understand. Plus I loved the free forms the author offered on her website.

Great for "regular people" despite a couple of goofs! .......2006-08-24

The outstanding characteristic of this book is that it is USABLE by regular, non-professional busy people who love gardening and nature and especially want to respect native plant communities and plant with sensitivity to their own region.
The Bittersweet confusion is terrible, but it is offset by good organization, good photos, and short descriptions on the outside of pages.
Another outstanding feature is that the author includes trees, shrubs, and vines, as well as flowers. This increases the value of this book significantly.
Flowers are wonderful, but people need to get a bit beyond flowers--flowers--flowers. For example, many butterfly species depend upon TREES as host plants and then use flowers for nectar. The distinctive Red Admiral uses trees at all stages of life and leaves the flowers for others.
Thanks to the author for a good down-to-earth reference that answers practical "ordinary" questions. I have recommended this book to a number of people in "wildlife/habitat gardening" classes and have given several as gifts . . . inserting a note about the Bittersweet :-)!

P.S. Yeah, I really should change that ridiculous name. I was under the influence of busy visiting grandchildren when I first reviewed a book here. . . and we do have a great goofy time!

Mostly good for garden formation ideas, but needs help........2005-04-03

I bought this older used book (1996) and find it remains quite relevant. One of the reasons we gardeners end up planting invasive species is because they are easy to grow. In EASY CARE NATIVE PLANTS Patricia Taylor addresses one of the biggest issues for gardeners... "I would grow native species, but I don't have time."

Well, Taylor suggests low maintenance creatures that will be no more work than the invasive plants you intended to install. With Taylor, we visit public and private gardens where individuals are making a difference one plant at a time. From these gardeners, we learn how to construct various gardens including a woodlands garden, a drought tolerant native garden, and a front yard native garden. Taylor provides lists of plants for each of these gardens. For a complementary book, you might consider buying both Taylor's book and 100 EASY-TO-GROW NATIVE PLANTS by Lorraine Johnson which is a kind of annotated plant directory (although it focuses mainly on non-woody plants, whereas Taylor includes trees, shrubs and plants). Alternatively, you can contact the US Fish and Wildlife Service for a free monograph on plant invaders and substitutes at www.nfwf.org. Do that and you are sure to find 'Celastrus orbiculatus' or Oriental Bittersweet on the "No-no" list. Also the latter monograph suggests several native alternatives to bittersweet, such as 'Campsis radicans' (trumpet vine) and 'Passiflora incarnata' or Passion Vine.

It genuinely does make a few mistakes.......2001-06-26

Not to belabor a nitpicker's criticism, but this book does include a few gaffes that compromise its use as a reference. I do very much enjoy the book, and my review below reflects that. But it just gets some things wrong.

For example, the species of Bittersweet southern gardeners have trouble with is Celastrus Orbiculatus -- oriental bittersweet. Yep, it's highly invasive, and yes, it can "consume entire forests" as this author says "bittersweet" does. The native American Species is Celastrus Scandens. The two differ in the position of the berries on the vine, partly... and they also differ in that the native one isn't swallowing entire forests. They're hard for an intelligent amateur to tell apart when looking at an individual plant... which is exactly the problem that this book has, too.

There's a HUGE difference between American chestnuts -- enormous trees now nearly gone from their native range due to blight -- and the shrubby asiatic Chestnuts that were brought in by nurseries and that carried the blight into this country in the first place. That's exactly the sort of distinction a gardener interested in native plants wants to know about, and it's basically the one this book misses with the two Bittersweets. In a lot of cases it's that sort of thing that got us into native gardening in the first place. So, see, it's bad to make this kind of error in a book on native plants.

Again, this is a decent book that just slips up in a few spots.

A Real Keeper and Invaluable Source.......2001-03-05

This is a top-notch gardening book, one that all gardeners can use to enrich their properties. While some may find recommendations by plant experts to be a disadvantage, I like knowing that top horticulturists have carefully selected the plants in this book (southern gardeners tell me that Taylor is right on the mark in describing the American bittersweet). The garden profiles, particularly, for me, the California one, are not only good reads but also packed with useful information. The book is designed to be useful - very easy to look for a yellow flower that blooms all summer or a small shrub with white spring flowers. I turn to it again and again to learn about and find beautiful, interesting and low maintenance plants. I have bought and given 14 of these books as gifts to friends and have received unanimous 5 star reviews from the recipients!

Engaging, well written reference... with a few gaps.......2000-02-26

This is a good choice for the beginning native gardener who needs a sense of the range of native plants available. It's a pleasant browse, and provides a representative sample of the choices you might make with natives. I appreciated the straightforward tone of the writer, who studiously avoided the pretensions of some of the more unctious coffeetable books. Let's just say she's gardening in urban New Jersey, not in northern California, and leave it at that.

On the other hand, there are some gaps in Ms. Taylor's knowledge that make this a less than definitive reference. The short version is that she's often recommending a plant based on the sendup of an arboretum or public garden with which she's corresponded, and that sometimes she hasn't done the research to back that recommendation up. For an egregious example, she describes the American form of Bittersweet (Celastrus Scandens) in a way that clearly demonstrates that she doesn't know the difference between it and the invasive asian form. That sort of slip is a real problem, both philosophically and practically, for someone who's into native plants. Oops.

All in all, I'd say this is a useful book that gets you interested in the plants, but that you should do a healthy amount of leg work elsewhere before you plant. The research is half the fun anyway...

For another native plant reference, with less species but more reliable context and detail, try C. Colston Burrell's A Gardener's Encyclopedia of Wildflowers.

Excellent! No gardener should be without it. I have yet to have a plant not listed in this book. It is a large book, but worth it. Beautiful photos. Money well spent!

You must read well into the description of a plant to find out if it's shade or sun lover. It's not something you can quickly discern.
Also missing is the distance needed between plants which is so helpful when developing a bed and purchasing more than one of each kind.

I read the original biography by Quentin Falk, a showbiz hack and mediocre writer, several years ago and remember it only as a very superficial treatment of a very complex man. This new update contains too much spin control by Hopkins' ex-wife and not enough insight into the man himself (or seemingly input from him) to make it worthwhile. Hopkins is a great actor and a very intriguing man, he deserves a more in-depth analysis of both his work and his persona than Falk can provide.

Anthony Hopkins, being, in my opinion, one of the greatest actors, deserves more in a biography than this. The book is basic and tells you information, but in trying to make it unique, the author bores you, confused you, and makes you less interested in reading it.
