History by a history maker........2004-03-15
Nehru himself calls the book as "Ramblings", given the background that book is a compilation of a whole bunch(196) of lengthy letters to his daughter, Indira Priyadarshini, during his stay in various goals across British Raj (which made him rely on memory than references). His main aim was to introduce his lovely daughter to the world but NOT to be a historian. He starts from the pre-Indus Valley civilization days and ends just before the dawn of WW II in this 971-page book. The book, apart from being journal of events in history, talks about opinions of Nehru on various events with more weightage to his favorite ones.
The book with Nehru's democratic spirit, his scietific and rational approach, his masterly narration with a poetic temper and his control over the language make the book immensely readable.
the reader from japan doen not know the facts.......2002-12-05
nehro or ghandi were not muslims. If you want to assign a religion to them you MUST know your facts. I believe they susbcribe to the "truth" and "faith in goodness" from hinduism, islam and christianity.
The other side of history.......2002-03-04
A brilliant intellectual pursuit that gives a glimpse of Nehru's intellect, comprehension and culture. In the myriad of Western opinions of human progress, 'discoveries' and colonialism, Nehru's Glimpses stand out for its bold 'other view' of history as well as generous and magnanimous acknowledgement of the merits of every civilisation. To have the 'Glimpses' lost on one, as a mere rambling collection of letters would be tragic. To appreciate the 'Glimpses' one must understand the context in which it was written. It was not meant as an exercise to outline history for the world with the global audience in mind. It was merely a father's restricted dialogue with a daughter outside the prison walls with the intention of instilling pride in her culture and history. And maybe, as an inspiration to India's freedom fighters to stand up against the might of a hegemonic empire and its propaganda on history and civilisation. While the bleakness of his and the Colonial India's circumstances colour his opinions slightly, it does not blind him to historical realities.
That a book with such a narrow, domestic agenda subsequently appealed to the wider audience internationally is probably the finest testament of Nehru's brilliance.
Oh boy..........2002-01-03
At best this book is the ramblings of a misinformed fanatic who looks at the world through a very small prison cell window. How can guys like this get published? Casually referring to John Wilkes Booth as "the crank who shot Lincoln", downplaying the very real, and very powerful role of the Japanese emperor three hundred years ago, and freely interjecting his own religious convictions whenever the chance appears (this is usually backed up with quotes from Marx or comments that reflect the books underlying theme - if "history" books are supposed to have a theme - which is loosely, "Why can't everyone be Muslim like me and Gandhi?")
The best thing you can do is ignore any book that tries to summarize over 2000 years of global history in less than 400 pages of someone's personal self justification.
History was never so interesting.......2002-01-03
The perfect book to answer your questions on World history. Nehru's knowledge of history is awe inspiring. His first letter to Indira Gandhi is very touching. His political achivements may be questionable but his intellect is not.

Good overview of keeping amphibians, but. . ........2000-08-03
This book is a good overview of keeping amphibians if you know nothing about them. There are 149 pictures in the book, which is nice if you are looking for pictures, but there are only 59 pages with explanatory text. Unfortunately the pictures cover at least 50% of most pages. Usually it's more than that. There aren't too many details about any particular aspect of amphibian care. The accounts for the species are nice but don't give too much information. They tell what kind of habitat the amphibian needs, what kind of food they eat, and gives a picture. There are also some brief chapters on breeding, housing, and diseases. If you know what kind of amphibian you want to keep it would be better if you bought another book instead. This book could be good for people who don't know which kind they want or want a little bit of an idea of what caring for an amphibian might be like.

Turtles Today Is Just As Good Today As It Was Yesterday.......2000-09-28
If you're looking for a quick, condensed identification and instructional book on turtles and tortoises, Turtles Today is the book for you. The topics are organized in an easy to understand manner, and there are plenty of pictures to keep even the least attentive reader captive.
Turtles Today is quick and easy reading, covering topics such as feeding, housing, health, breeding, and many others. I especially liked the last two chapters of the book covering the different types of land tortoises and aquatic turtles. Including pictures with each species description was a nice touch. By looking at the cover, you might get the impression that this book is out of date, but most of the information it contains is as true today as it was when it was originally written.
If you are an avid herpetologist, or just a beginning herp lover, this is definitely a book to have on your shelf.

Book Description
This important new book from the author of three previous books on antique German dolls, features groundbreaking new research on the parian dolls produced by eight factories in Germany during the late 19th century. In preparing this book, the author traveled to the sites of the factories in Thuringia to dig for important artifacts; her labors uncovered more than 1,000 porcelain shards that show the distinctive facial painting used by each factory highlighted in the book. These discoveries, combined with her collection of original porcelain factory ledgers and sample books, allow her to attribute with certainty the makers of these beautiful dolls, especially those produced during the 1860s and 1870s and previously designated as being by "unknown makers."
Mary Krombholz also makes use of rare written records describing daily life inside a 19th-century porcelain factory to clearly delineate the significant role played by each worker in doll production. Her narrative clarifies not only the process of making porcelain dolls in the 19th century, but also presents a vivid picture of life in the Thuringian villages in which these factories were located.
More than 350 color photographs, all close views detailing the painting and decoration of these pieces, accompany the invaluable test, making this the most significant volume on German parian dolls to be published.

Book Description
The Encyclopaedia of Judaism provides a full and reliable account of Judaism, beginning in ancient Israelite times and extending to our own day. About Judaism, the religion, its diverse history, literature, beliefs past and present, observances and practices, and place in the context of society and culture, this is what we know. All principal topics required for the systematic description of Judaism as a religion the world view, way of life, theory of the social entity constituted by the faithful are addressed here.
The Encyclopaedia of Judaism provides a definitive account of contemporary Judaism and a reliable picture of a tradition of nearly four thousand years. A full and detailed index provides ready-reference for facts, and the systematic articles set forth highly readable accounts of the entire range of Judaic systems of belief and behavior put forth over time and in our own time. It is written for people from all backgrounds, scholars and general readers alike.
When the editors completed the initial three volumes of The Encyclopaedia of Judaism, they found satisfaction in having covered the more than one hundred topics. But they also realized that many other important topics remained to be set forth in a systematic way. This led to new inquiries into the history, practices, and theology of the religion, Judaism. Specialists in all these fields were found and the result is more than ninety new studies, of which the first thirty-two are in the present volume. Supplement Two is anticipated for 2003, and Supplement Three, for 2004.

VERY INTERESTING STORY AND A GOOD READ.......2005-10-07
I read very few "star" auto-biographies so have little to judge this one by. But I must say, I was impressed. The writing was good, the story seemed to be truthfully told and it held my interest. I have always enjoyed Kirk Douglas the actor and was pleased that I was able to enjoy Kirk Douglas the autobiographor. Mr. Douglas has certainly led an interesting life and has seemingly been able to keep his prespective on life. As I said, I am impressed and highly recommend this one.
Interesting Tale.......2005-07-02
This book tells the story of Kirk Douglas, from his humble beginnings in a small upstate New York town to his years in Hollywood. Douglas was born Issur Danielovitch Demsky, the son of illiterate Jewish immigrants. As a Jew, his father could not be hired in the mills or other up-and-coming enterprises in town, so the only work available to him was to go about in the street collecting old rags which he sold to paper mills. Much of this story focuses on the relationship between Issur and his father-Issur felt that his father never gave him recognition, support, or respect. All his life, he struggled in vain to get a single pat on the back from his father. In any case, Issur's life wasn't at all tragic. He showed talent for acting at an early age, managed to get a scholarship to attend college, and then went on to acting school. It was during summer service in a theatrical company that he chose his stage name Kirk Douglas, which he later took as his legal name. This book goes on to tell of Douglas' successes on the big screen and marriages and affairs.
In addition to the struggle for approval with his father, another recurring theme of the book is Douglas' battles with anti-Semitism. The book is no great literary classic, but it can be engaging, and does tell an interesting story for Douglas fans. The details of his early life as the son of poor Jewish immigrants are particularly interesting for the documentation they provide of this little-known chapter of American history.
Kirk Douglas -- What a Surprise.......2005-04-14
I was quite surprised to like this book as much as I did. As Kirk Douglas' autobiography, I expected it to be a little egotistical and over-explanatory. You know, typical celebrity autobio stuff.
Kirk describes his humble beginnings (a ragman's son) quite capably. He also describes his successes and failures in what appears to be a candid and honest manner. His life has been remarkable, and his written story is believable.
I hope to read his second book soon.
Kirk Unbuttoned...........2005-02-15
Born in 1916, little Issur Danielovitch grew up in upstate New York, the poorest of the poor. Son of illiterate Russian/Jewish immigrants, taunted by the other children, Issur breaking past every barrier imaginable became the great Kirk Douglas. This is his life story from birth through 70 years of age(before the stroke).
As his life story unfolds in this well written account, you will feel like the tales of his climb out of poverty are being told to you by an old friend. Kirk doesn't hold back. He's as open about his misdeeds as he is with his fine accomplishments.
And he doesn't hesitate to name names either!
He talks about everything. From his troubled boyhood and distant relationship with his father, his dream of making it big on stage, his time spent in the service, his escapades, his loves and family, relationships with the rich and famous, his good-will tours around the world, and of course his films. It is nice that the films are discussed chronologically, and you will know exactly where he was physically and emotionally during the filming. Almost all the films are touched upon and some including "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral", "Lonely Are The Brave", "Lust For Life" and Spartacus", have whole chapters devoted to them. The directors, other cast members, and Hollywood in general, do not get away scott free either.
His writing is funny, poignant, inspirational and heartfelt. There are times when you may not even like the things he has done, and other times may get you thinking deeply or angered about life's circumstances. But you know that he's being about as honest as they come.
There are also many personal photos included of his family, fellow actors, and the good-will trips he made for the United States.
Closing the book after the last page, I was sad to be at the end. Kirk Douglas's words touched me as much as his work in film, and...made me feel not only proud, but lucky to be an American. I am looking foward to reading his other works as well.
"The Ragman's Son" is highly recommended for fans of Kirk, aspiring actors and writers(this is a great example for writing memoirs), and for those who loved to be touched or inspired by a good book.
Way To Go, Issur...Way To Go!
Enjoy....Laurie
One of the best screen autobiographies .......2005-02-07
Kirk Douglas story of growing up one of the seven - children in an Amsterdam New York Jewish family, and of working and fighting his way to the top of his profession is in one sense a typical American rags to riches story. It is the triumph of ability and will and courage, and another startling example of how the American dream can be realized. It is also on a parallel track a story of assimilation in America, of denial of one's own identity. This is also often part of the American reality. In Douglas case however this was modified by his return to his Jewish religion and identity after having gone through a serious accident. This story has something of the energy and vibrancy of Douglas' screen personality. It is rich with anecdotes including many celebrity anecdotes as Douglas and his wife were long a part of Hollywood's social world. The question of his morality in relation to women , his many 'conquests' is a real one. But all in all he beside being one of the best American actors in the past half - decade has made a very positive contribution to his society.

She's the Queen mum she is.......2001-08-01
This is a lavish guide to the practically indistructable mother of the British Sovereign. She was Elizabeth Bowes-Lyons to her fellow debs in 1919, she was Queen as George VI's wife, but to all of us she is just the Queen Mum, bless her; the plucky lady with the common touch, who shrugged off gunshot wounds after a quarrel about gambling debts in an East End boozer, the massive-armed matriarchal powerhouse who has no time for nonces or liberty-takers. A marvelous book.
A stunning array of photographs.......1999-10-09
Many of the photographs in this book are not new. They have been seen before in other publications. Athough there are some good new selections of photos used. In all cases however, the photographic reproductions in this book are excellent. A very nice, personal gift copy that I would be pleased to give to a friend.
Wonderful photographic history of Britain's Queen Mother.......1999-09-23
The photographs in this book are wonderful. A complete history of the life of the Queen Mother told through the pictures that appeared in The Daily Telegraph, this is a great buy.
