4 out of 5 stars A great book that just fell short of extraordinary.......2002-10-22

Definitely worth the price and the book does its job of helping you identify tree species of Michigan. Offers additional in-depth information about the anatomy of leaves, twig cross-sections, fruit, wood characteristics and uses. Most of which is more than average readers will probably want to know, but is interesting reading none-the-less. All I wanted was a reference to ID the trees on my property.

I was pleasantly surprised that the book also includes information on vines and shrubs, but was quickly disappointed when I discovered that this section offered no illustrations or pictures of either - only text descriptions.

Contrary to the front cover, the book has no photographs! Another bummer. All species are represented by illustrations only, but at least I can honestly say the drawings seem extremely accurate and have great detail.

My four-star rating is also due to the incomplete shrub and vine sections. I realize that this is a "tree" book and that adding such information is a plus, but the writer(s) should have stayed consistent and included illustrations for these as well. Trying to identify features by descriptions only is tedious and really seems to take away the joy of the whole adventure. Too bad, it would have been the "icing on the cake".

I recommend buying this book as a main reference and suggest finding supplement information via the web. There are endless sites that offer much of the same information for free, but carrying this book into the woods would certainly be more convenient than lugging a stack of print outs.

If you need to help your kid with the perennial leaf collection or if you just want a handy field guide for trees, I have found none better than Michigan Trees. I own a well worn copy of the 1978 edition and it is so popular among friends I am ordering another to loan out.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of choices!.......2007-08-08

As a new homeowner, I've found myself with a huge yard. The house was empty for two years. Now that I've cut, pruned, and cleared shrubs, I'm ready to plant new stuff. I saw this book in Borders and was surprised by the detailed descriptions and pictures. By no means do I have a green thumb. This book; however, encourages me to learn more.

4 out of 5 stars Worth getting if you garden in Michigan!.......2007-05-02

The collaborative effort between Tim Wood & Alison Beck is a noteworthy resource for people gardening in the very cold/unreliable weather of Michigan.

Many of the comments are very insightful & the practical easy to use lay out simplifies the process of choosing suitable woody ornamentals for one's landscaping project.

As a landscape designer not originally from Mi, I've used this book as a very reliable source for recommendations in the design process. Both professionals & homeowners alike will appreciate this books wealth of information & easy reading style.

My only issue with the book was that it stuck with most of the very traditional sometimes overused plants here in Michigan. Would have been nice to have seen included a few more plants that are zone hardy to Michigan yet are highly underused and could do with some exposure to the general public. Eg: Asimina, Dianthus, Evodia, Itea, Pseudotsuga & the vast array of Explorer shrub roses that do marvellous in Michigan

Overall I think the book has plenty to offer as a crash course that lays a solid foundation to build (a garden) on.

                  INTRODUCTION

History started with a bang in the Dordogne and Lot region. It was here, along its green, secretive valleys, that prehistoric people first started chiselling away at statues of round-hipped fertility figures. It was here, too, that they penetrated deep into the limestone caves to paint the world's earliest masterpieces of pot-bellied, prancing ponies, mammoths and muscular bison by the light of flickering oil lamps. Later occupants of the area expressed their faith in the Romanesque churches to be found, uncomplicated and enduring, on many a sun-drenched hilltop, and in the array of abbeys, cloisters and towering cathedrals. The legacy of a more bellicose era lies in the medieval fortresses perched on airy pinnacles of rock and in the feudal villages held snug within their ramparts, while an altogether more intimate link with the past is recorded among the ancient farmhouses tucked into the landscape's folds.

In addition to this richly layered history, the Dordogne and Lot is also endowed with a tremendous variety of scenery, from the dry limestone plateaux of the causses, sliced through with narrow gorges, to the lushly wooded valleys of the Périgord Noir and the Bordeaux vineyards' serried ranks. Through these landscapes slide the great rivers that unify and define the region: the Dordogne, which flows 500km from the Massif Central west to the Atlantic coast, and its more modest tributary, the Isle; and further south the Lot, writhing across country on its way to join the Garonne, which, along with its tributaries, the Tarn and Aveyron, marks this region's southern border.

Within this riverine framework each area possesses its own local character, marked by subtle shifts in architectural styles, in the hue of the building stone, the crops grown and in the cuisine. It is a region best savoured at its own unhurried pace; there is always something to catch the eye, some forgotten corner to stumble upon, a market or a village fête, where even today older folk use dialects whose origins date back to Roman times. This isn't to say the region is undiscovered - indeed, certain of its sights number amongst the most visited in France - but its heartland is still steeped in what the French call the douceur de vivre, the gentle way of life.

The food and wine are the other great inducements to bring you to the region. This is the land of duck and goose, of foie gras and truffles, of succulent lamb, smoky-sweet goats' cheeses and a rainbow array of fruits and vegetables to be sampled in simple country inns or in elegant dining rooms dedicated to haute cuisine. The choice of wines is no less intoxicating, from rich, ruby Cahors to the velvety sweet whites of Sauternes and Monbazillac; wandering the region's highways and byways, sampling these and other local offerings, is a pleasure not to be missed.

There is also endless scope for outdoor activities. In summer all the major rivers are flecked with canoes in colourful gaggles, while the Lot is now also open for navigation by houseboats. Walkers and cyclists are well served with a skein of well-marked tracks. Trekking is widely popular, and potholing and rock-climbing are also on offer in certain locations.

                    5 out of 5 stars Negotiating 201.......2006-08-06

If his book "You Can Negotiate Anything", written in the 1980's was negotiating 101, then this is a step up and builds on, rather than repeats the lessons in his earlier book.
About the same time his first book was published Herb Cohen was consulted regarding the seizure of the US Embassy hostages in Iran. In this book he outlines his involvement in that incident, and uses it to illustrate some of the recommendations he makes this time around.
While this is not a "once over lightly" commentary on negotiating, it is immensely readable and if you end up buying it the book will serve you well on a number of levels - either as an entertaining read, a means of enhancing your own negotiating skills, or a how-to for budding negotiators at any level.
If you've never read his first book, never mind - this is even better. I highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Rather unfocused but entertaining.......2005-09-25

I was in search of an updated how-to book on Negotiation, but instead found this book to be a set of Herb's essays on various points in negotiation. Nothing wrong in that, but if you are looking for a robust, updated Negotiation framework, then this book will not provide it for you.

"Getting to Yes" still remains the very best Negotiation primer you can read. After that, read the other books to fill in the details into the conceptual framework established by "Getting to Yes".

1 out of 5 stars This book is worthless.......2005-07-04

I will be succint: This book is absolutley worthless. Do not buy it unless you want to feel as ripped-off as I do.

                    1 out of 5 stars Not T-H-A-T Good.......2004-09-04

The book is about 50% actual negotiating tactics and 50% political commentary. There were some interesting ideas insofar as negotiating strategies, but nothing really unique. The author comes across as a combination of an friendly, lovable uncle and the Jack Lemmon character in Glengarry Glen Ross. His political commentaries showed a breathtaking shallowness and lack of historical knowledge...such as his statement that the Western world's confrontation with the Islamic world began in 1979(?!). In the appendices, Cohen includes several memorandums to top officials in various administrations which provide insight to a neo-con understanding of the world. That such an underdeveloped grasp of geopolitics occupies a large portion of the book throughout is disappointing, and seems to influence Mr. Cohen's thoughts on negotiating.

5 out of 5 stars This follow-up is worth the wait..........2004-07-07

Herb Cohen's YOU CAN NEGOTIATE ANYTHING is my all-time
favorite book on negotiations . . . I still recommend it as the
absolute best book ever written on the subject.

Amazingly, that book was written in 1980 and Cohen did not
write a follow-up until now . . . as he notes in the Acknowledgments to his latest effort, NEGOTIATE THIS!, "This book has been incubating in me for some time. To be sure, if you believe in the academic axiom, 'publish or perish,' I would be long dead."

Fortunately, that is not the case. Cohen lives, and that's a great thing because NEGOTIATE THIS! is a worthy successor to his earlier effort . . . it is filled with useful examples and practical advice that is applicable to virtually any negotiation.

In fact, that is one of the real strengths of the book; i.e., it will be useful to a wide range of folks--salespeople, diplomats, even parents. (A whole chapter is devoted to them!)

The key is to keep in mind the subtitle to NEGOTIATE THIS! . . . you can succeed BY CARING, BUT NOT T-H-A-T MUCH.

There were several memorable passages; among them:
                    * Basically, there is a twofold explanation for why we often do not achieve our potential as negotiators. One, as we've seen, is that we are too emotionally involved, caring too much. The second reason is that we have too much authority. What I'm saying is that the last person who should negotiate for a country, corporation, or business is the chief executive officer. Take that one step further and realize that the worst person to negotiate for you is-you. Clearly this presents
a practical problem that can be solved by limiting your own authority. Always give yourself room to say, "That sounds good to me but I'll have to check with my board." If you don't have a board, then substitute the word banker, attorney, adviser, boss, or even spouse.

                    * What is really happening? This experienced salesman was merely

                    * Years ago, when I was first employed by a particular government
agency, they asked for my fee schedule. At the time, I really wanted this assignment, but we both knew there was no way they could afford my regular price.

Then, during a face-to-face meeting, I said, "Honestly, I want to work with you on this. Since I trust you 100 percent, I know you'll get me as much money as you can. Whatever that amount is, I'll still do it."

Two months later when I arrived at their headquarters, I learned
from a third party that my negotiating partner had spent endless

I found this in a Bennington, VT bookstore after my wife Andi pointed it out and bought it right away based on a warm description of how loving a cat could be, even moments after killing and gutting a grouse. Berkeley does a wonderful job of showing that duality of cats, of how at once they're incredibly close to us they are as well as being close to natural hunting machines. Warmly written, funny and touching, she also fills out the book with very well-researched scientific info on feral cats, and cat populations. A must-read if you're a cat person and owner.

This book is out of print and copyrighted 1987, but it's the only book I found with information regarding a feral cat colony. The author's experiences with the feral cats living around her Vermont home are a delightful insight into the person/cat relationship, and her interest, curiosity, and research regarding the realities of feral cat colonies is incredibly useful to me, as a lay person is just starting to trap, spay/neuter, and return strays and ferals in the Los Angeles area. A must-read!

I was hooked! I love cats, and all other felines for that matter, but fiction is more my range. This, however, is a great book! I LOVED IT!!! A must read! Yay! Heheh!

                                  Book Description

Christianity in Northern Malawi deals with the interaction of the missionary methods of the Scottish missionary Donald Fraser and the traditional culture of the Ngoni people of northern Malawi in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It looks at Ngoni origins and culture prior to first contacts with the missionaries, at the early life and ideas of Fraser, and at Fraser's disagreements with some of his Scottish colleagues. There are also sections on Ngoni interactions with the early colonial government, and the development of a genuinely Ngoni Church. The book uses primary and oral sources, some of which were not previously available.

4 out of 5 stars Hard to find but interesting to read.......2005-08-12

I'm surprised more hasn't been written about Janssen by others. This seems to be the only in depth look at his life and it would be interesting to hear from others who would be less subjective.

She tells about their rough times together but only alludes to many years of good times. I would have liked to have read a few ancedotes about the good ones as well.

Maybe its the cynic in me but some of the book relates more about a woman who couldn't let go of a man who no longer loved her than a biography of Janssen. She also implies that his second wife duped him into signing a will leaving everything to wife number two and may have even failed to come to his aid when he suffered his heart attack. I'd love to hear the opposing views on all of this. The "will" is in the book but all the claims against it are conspicously missing.

I have been waiting along time for this book and i really enjoyed it....I feel that Ellie and David made a lovely couple and it really touched my heart to read all the ups and downs that they went thur during their marriage. I hope that Ellie finds some peace in her life..........Sincerely, a true fan....Roxiann D. Hill, Indpls, IN

3 out of 5 stars An interesting but subjective read..........1999-12-02

The book title tells it all: Ellie Janssen, the author, tells the story of how former husband David became successful as TV's Dr. Kimble during the 1960s. She highlights the factors contributing to the downfall of their marriage, particularly David's drinking and extramarital affairs. If you are a David Janssen or Fugitive fan, this book lends an interesting perspective, along with several rare photos. However, it is understandably subjective, as Ms. Janssen struggles to explain the tumultuous nature of her relationship with David. The book raises some suspicion as to the circumstances surrounding David's untimely death in 1980.

5 out of 5 stars His death appears suspicious........1998-12-03

All 120 episodes of the tv series "The Fugitive" out shine the movie version, although Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones were excellent. This book proves to be an insightful and significant look into the life of David Janssen. He died too young. I would like to hear more about how he REALLY died.

Three leading scholars examine one of the oldest professorships, the Lady Margaret's Chair of Divinity at the University of Cambridge. Graham Stanton, current holder, writes an introduction considering theology at Cambridge before 1502 and after 1649. In two subsequent chapters (delivered as lectures at an event in March 2002 to celebrate the five-hundredth anniversary of the Chair), Richard Rex offers an account of the establishment of the Professorship in 1502 and Patrick Collinson addresses the extent to which early incumbents were involved in the religious and political turmoil of the era.
