Book Description
More than just a hiker's guide, this guidebook describes more than 200 waterfalls in the Mid-Atlantic region, along with instruction on how to reach them.
Residents of the Mid-Atlantic states may know of Passaic Falls in New Jersey, Bushkill Falls (the "Niagara of Pennsylvania"), or the Great Falls of the Potomac in Maryland. Yet there are many other falls that are less known, just beyond the view from the highway. Some thunder awesomely, others are gossamer trickles. And, surprisingly, some are in the heart of the region's biggest cities. These natural water wonders are for the most part on public lands throughout Maryland, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
This is the first comprehensive guidebook to the region's waterfalls, rated by author Gary Letcher on a scale of 1-5. Each of the falls are described according to:
- Location, including GPS coordinates
- Access and directions
- Trail length and difficulty
- Stream and waterfall characteristics
- Geological factors
- Natural, historical, and cultural features
The author offers insight on waterfall geology, safety, and photography, and even specifies details that cue you in to the Seven Ways to Find the Height of a Waterfall! Tips on waterfall photography are included. 75 black & white photos, 10 illustrations, 20 maps, index.

Guidebook to some 200 of region's waterfalls.......2004-10-06
The first, detailed, comprehensive, and thoroughly "user friendly" guidebook to some 200 of region's waterfalls, Gary Letcher's Waterfalls Of The Mid-Atlantic States provides directions to each beautiful site enabling the reader to use it as a guide book to experiencing these natural, beautiful wonders in person. Some of these sites are in or near major cities, others are tucked away in remote wilderness areas. The flowing falls are, for the most part, on national, state, and municipal parkland, forests, and game lands in Maryland, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Each waterfall is rated on a scale of 1 to 5. The location information includes GPS coordinates; trail access and difficulty; waterfall type and source; geological factors; historical and culture features; and even the best times of the year to visit them. Enhanced with tips on waterfall photography and the author's "Seven Ways to Find the Height of a Waterfall", Waterfalls Of The Mid-Atlantic States is confidently recommended reading for tri-state area backpackers, hikers, canoeists, and anyone else with an appreciation for the natural beauty and spectacular wonder of falling water.

A wonderful book full of crimes that I could not put down!!.......1997-07-01
Mr. Boddy has invited his six very best friends for a weekend at his very expensive mansion. The guests' favorite thing in the world is to steal Mr. Boddy's million dollar collectables, and perhaps a murder here and there. Anyway, some chapters specialize in a stolen dog, the winning of a solid gold peanut, a costume party with a stolen pair of false teeth, plus so many more. The three Clue books I've read were impossible to put down. The books are full of humor, crimes, murders, criminals, solutions, and of course, clues. READ ALL OF THE BOOKS IN THIS FANTASTIC SERIES!!

This gives a young reader a sense of pride that she is "reading" the story. All pictures and vocabulary are on flashcards at the end of the book.Did a ((ghost)) take all the Valentine ((cards))?((Scooby)) and the gang are on the case!

Interesting, but I wish the author wrote more........2003-02-22
After returning from the past, Dixie and Danny find out that their sick brother is still really sick and then they needed more money for the special treatment. They again turn for help to their uncles and are asked to go back into the past again. At first they are really mad at that request, until their uncles admit that Danny and Dixie's father had gone into the past and that that was why he had disappeared. The twins quickly agree to go, anxious to find their father. They travel back into the time of the French and Indian War and meets George Washington.
The story was interesting and fun, but the ending was really, really lame. You'd think the author had written another book continuing the "Time Navigators", but he didn't, so it was really sort of frustrating.

Good starter.......2007-05-09
I finished 3/4 of the book so far...not bad..it is a tough exam anyways...and you need to memorize a lot...the book is good....but you need to know how to benefit from it...i mean....sometimes in one small paragraph you find all what you need...and sometimes you read pages for nothing....
the book is based on the pmp knowledge areas.... which makes studying a bit boring sometimes....afterall maybe the material is heavy and it is not the books problem.....
I actually bought this book and rita's...so i believe it is a good start then you can jump into rita's...
Do not study with this book.......2007-02-07
I studied from this book for weeks and never improved on the assessment exams. With one day before test day, and in a bit of a panic, I threw the book in the waste basket and purchased the Rita Mulcahy text which had been recommended to me repeatedly. The one day I spent with the Mulcahy book was worth more than the 60 days I spent with the Heldman text for the following reasons:
1. The Heldman book does not follow the same format as the PMBOK. I at first considered this an advantage as I thought the different format would help my brain learn the material in a different way. This theory did not prove true. The Mulcahy book follows the same format as the PMBOK.
2. The chapter assessments and practice exam questions are confusing and there are bugs in the software that cut off some of the questions and answers. I assumed the format was indicative of how confusing the questions would be on the actual exam. This turned out to not be the case and in retrospect I wonder if the questions were scored correctly at all. The questions I saw on the exam were much more closely aligned with the format of the questions in the Mulcahy book.
3. The Mulcahy book includes additional exercises and "games" that will prepare you for the exam very well.
Do not buy this book.
This book is out of date.......2006-12-23
Don't Study this book if you are trying to pass the PMP Certification Exam. This book is out of date. Be sure to buy a PMP Examp Prep book that was written for the PMBOK 3rd Edition.
Very helpful in passing the CAPM exam.......2006-06-19
The book combined with computer based test simulations are a very good preparation regiment. The book is very terse but cuts through to the case on what you need to know to pass the test.
The writing is not particularly great but is effective. It would be helpful to a bit more graphic representation of the various phases and processes. The practice tests at the end of the characters are helpful but they are not very representative of the actual questions in the CAPM test. I am not sure if the questions are representative of the PMP test.
Overall, a web-based practice test should accompany the book. The CD that came with the book was helpful but the questions again were not the best representation of the test questions.
The book did get me up to speed very quickly in prepartion for the test.
Conflicting Processes Names and Knowledge Area Allocations to PMBOK.......2006-05-25
In Kim Heldmans "PMP Study Guide 2nd Edition" Kim has very different processes than the PMBOK (names and what knowledge group the process belongs to).
For example, Kim has 'Admin closure' in the Closing Process Group/Project Communications Knowledge Area, where as the PMBOK, does not have 'Admin closure' as a process at all.
Another example is that the PMBOK lists 'Create WBS' as a process in the Planning Process Group/Project Scope Knowledge Area, where as Kim does not list this process at all.
Another example is that the PMBOK has 'Create Project Charter' and 'Create Preliminary Scope Statement' as processes in the Planning Process Group/Project Integration Knowledge Area, Kim has nothing in this intersection; but has an 'Initiating' Process in the Initiation group and designates it in the scope knowledge area - the PMBOK has nothing in the Initiation/Scope group.
These are just a few of many differences.
This is all extremely confusing and I would like an explanation. I think it is very poor of a book which references the PMBOK to have so many conflicts with the PMBOK.

Wild Bird Rescue.......2000-09-29
We rescue an average of 1000 birds a year and we owe a lot of our success to Robert Stroud. We use all his methods and we average about a 12 percent loss in our birds. He is our mentor and we have proven his methods work. The national rate for losses in wild birds is 33 percent we have averaged out to 12 percent. If you don't buy and then use Stroud's methods you will loose out.
Practical knowlege for all bird fanciers.......2000-01-18
As a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine I have found this book of both practical and historical interest. It is still considered a standard work of the diagnosis and treatment of Avian diseases. A modern bird breeder would not be at fault in following Mr. Stroud's advice. While browsing the library of a retired colleague, I found what I believe to be a first edition of Stroudt's Digest. Can anyone tell me how to confirm this? The edition I have bears the copyright date of 1943, the dedication and forward are dated 1939. Was there a printing between 1939 and 1943?
Not just for entertainment.......1999-01-02
Mr. Stroud spent, according to the publisher's notes, 54 years in solitary confinement--All of it devoted to the study of how to identify and cure the diseases of birds. This book although written many years ago, is still a comprehensive study of the diseases, injuries, ailments and conditions of birds. There are few vetinarians who have studied bird ailments so intensively, or can give such detailed and practical information on how to identify what is wrong with them. I suspect the modern state of avian medicine owes a great debt to the work of Mr. Stroud. The text is clear and even when technical, explains the condition, symptoms, cause or suspected causes and known or possible treatments in practical terms. Mr. Stroud's book was written when there were few avian veterinarians available to help bird breeders and owners. That problem persists to this day. The information provided covers the entire range, from the mundane to the exotic. I would not be surprized to learn that Mr. Stroud's techniques, discoveries and research are the backbone of all modern avian medicine and avian veterinary curriculum. The book also provides detailed vitamin requirement analysis and food sources as well as descriptions of vitamin deficiency ailments. It is amazing that so much information is packed into one book. I have seen nothing in any owner handbooks that I did not find in Mr. Stroud's book with more detail and clarity. As any bird owner who has had a sick bird knows, birds can progress from barely noticable illness to death while searching for a vet who knows anything about avian medicine at all. Mr. Stroud's book should be perused by all bird owners. And if one proceeds with caution regarding the suggested medications of Mr. Stroud which may be outdated or have better alternatives available in this modern day, this book can still provide health giving and life-saving information that one can apply while one is waiting for the vet to call back.
Birdman of Alcatraz.......1998-09-07
This is the book written by the famous "Birdman of Alcatraz", a convicted 2-time murderer in Alcatraz who kept pet birds and treated their injurries. This is a large and elaborate book on bird diseases. It looks quite technical, but I am not a veterinarian and cannot offer any comments on its technical validity. The book is an absolute classic and a must-have for any collection of bird books. Stroud has been dead since 1963, so I see no reason to hesitate to buy the book just because the author was a murderer.

Mixed review.......2003-05-02
I have just about all the All About books by Otho. So let me say up front that I find these books informative both in textual content and in illustrations/photos. However, beware, once one gets hooked on one of these books, one is almost compelled to buy more and more of them--and that is not all out of love for these books. For example, I bought the All About Trees book. Upon close reading, I find several common trees missing from the book. Then I realized that there is a "All About Flowering Trees" book. I have the "All About Shrubs" book. But there is also the "All About Hedges" book. Should I get that one as well if I am thinking of planting a shrub as a hedge? See what I mean?
There is another problem. I live in the east coast of the US. Some of the plants, such as the beautiful rose "Ingrid Bergman", are simply very hard to get--last I checked, only the nurseries in the UK carry this particular cultivar. I guess this series intends to reach a broader range of readership, but I find it a bit disappointing to say the least.
Having said the above, I admit I am new to gardening, which is why I am buying all these books. So maybe in the next five years, I will be able to take better advantage of the info. offered in these series.
A Wealth of Information!.......2003-03-08
This book sets out recommended rose varieties for every situation. Categories are broken down into such topics as the best roses for hot or cold climates, fragrance, roses for cutting, and several locations, from hanging baskets to groundcovers. If you want to pick the right rose, or if you are interested in learning more about how to use roses, get this book!

It is also the rare instance when one major child star (Baby Peggy) employs her own hard-won insight in exploring the career and family woes of the most famous child star of the them all. This is the first published study of Coogan's life.
Customer Reviews:
Life of Jackie.......2007-04-03
This was a good book and easy and fast to read. It mainly focuses on the very early film making of Jackie, and then goes into his later years. The only thing that makes me wonder about authors of these biographies (of which I read MANY), is when their information is not correct, and then I wonder a bit what else might be not quite the truth. In this respect, I refer to a couple of references which the average reader might say "who even cares", but what I am saying here is that if this information is incorrect, then what else hasn't been researched thoroughly or completely and happens to be wrong? Are we getting the real truth? My questions here refers to when Jack Coogan died, and the author says that he was buried at Calvary Cemetery in Culver City. Calvary is in East L.A. (where Jack is), and Culver City is where another Catholic cemetery is located. So we have not good research here. Then, after Jackie died, the book says he was "laid to rest at Holy Cross Mausoleum, near the crypt that held the remains of Jack Coogan Sr." But before it says he's at Calvary, now it's Holy Cross. And I do happen to know the truth. Jack is at Calvary, but Jackie is at Holy Cross. So, maybe trivial to some, but like I say, whatother information may not be the real truth. Another bit of the book that disturbed me was when the auto accident happened that killed Jack and injured Jackie. She says that after the accident the mother was notified at 5 PM, and that immediately his stepfather chartered a plane in Los Angeles, which consisted of his mother, their doctor and 4 other people and when they arrived in San Diego they were led by police escort the 59 miles to the acident area. She makes it sounds like this was accomplished in a very brief time period, but honestly, chartering a plane and getting 6 or more people to the airport and flying to San Diego and then driving 59 miles of rugged road would take an awfully long time, many hours I would think. They would have arrived at 2 in the morning or something. This isn't very believable. But it's a good book and I liked it. Jackie was fortunate to live out his life and die a natural, as he lived some pretty fast years.
Jackie Coogan's Life Story.......2004-08-06
Diana Serra Cary was once know as Baby Peggy in the 1920's. Mrs. Cary must have done exhaustive research into the life of fellow child star Jackie Coogan. She also reveals a crime that was committed during Coogan's college years. Jackie Coogan: The World's Boy King is aptly titled. Coogan's parents were Vaudeville actors. Charles Chaplin was searching for a child to work in one of his pictures. Adorable 6 year old Jackie got the part. Until he hit the awkward age, Jackie was making millions of dollars. There were no laws during that era about child labor or whether the child would benefit in adulthood from a working childhood. Jackie was mobbed all over the world. Since the pictures he made were silent, the subtitles could be changed for every country. Naturally, this greatly effected the child. During his teenage years he was in an automobile crash with 3 other people. Jackie was the only survivor. His father had died.
When it came time for Jackie to inherit his trust fund he discovered that he had no right to it under the law. His Mother, now remarried met Jackie in court to fight over his childhood earnings. The public was horrified to learn that Jackie under old fashioned laws was not entitled to one red cent. This is how the famous Coogan law was brought into effect. At this time Jackie was married to Betty Grable. He was terribly cruel to Betty. Continuously drunk one night he urinated all over his wife. Unable to find work because of being black listed by Mayor, Coogan enlisted in the military. Later in life he would become known as Uncle Fester on the Adam's Family.
