      Book Description

Ever since they were formed in remote geological eras, emerging from the depths under the earth's crust, the mountain ranges of our planet have appeared to dominate the world. Magical in their silence and seemingly indestructible ,mountains have been viewed by people living near them as sacred places-dwellings of gods and birthplaces of forces that rule human destinies-and colossal manifestations of elemental power.

Ascending to the summits of the Andes,Cristobal von Rotkirch begins his photographic essay, Alta Colombia, on their slopes, in the world of the highlanders, portraying settlements and farmIand, and revealing a way of life intimately finked with the moun-tains that remain aIways in view.

Leaving behind the world of mankind, the photographer captures the serene beauty and vitality of the Andean forests, transparent waters, vast open spaces, and endless skies. He guides the reader through the high moorlands, with their ecosystem so critical to the conservation of the water resources of the nation. There, millions of frailejones and other species of exotic plants stand, like taciturn armies, catching the midst and regulating the balance irrigation o the basins that originate there.

On the upper high moorlands, plant life dissapears, giving way to ancient glacial beds and moraine and ultimately to perpetual snow. Viewing the photographs taken of these icy peaks in the clear mountain air the reader is forced to reflect on man's smallness, and to stand still, in awe of the severe beauty of land this landscape.

5 out of 5 stars A work of artistic brilliance.......2002-11-24

It would be an injustice to call this book a photographic essay. Instead I prefer to call Alta Colombia: Splendor of the Mountains, "a work of artistic brilliance." This book is a stunning and powerful portrayal of Colombia's mountains. Unfortunately few people outside the borders of Colombia are aware of the "summits and perpetual snows that crown the great mountain range of the Andes."

To that end, Cristóbal von Rothkirch and Juan Pablo Ruiz are knowledgable environmentalists and expert mountain climbers who mangage to capture breathtaking scenes from remote areas of Colombia. We have had this book on our coffee table for years. And it always manages to get rave reviews. With the holidays coming up soon...I think it is a great gift idea.

This book is not limited to mountains. It also includes impressive frames of giant condor's, other rare birds, rocks, fields, native indians, plants and much more. "Alta Colombia: Spendor of the Mountains" is a book filled with a wide display of colors, some are soft and while others are quite bold. It also boasts some great photographs of nature's intimate relationship with the sun. Colombia is blessed with great beauty. This book captures the majestry of Colombia's natural treasures.

5 out of 5 stars BREATHTAKING look at LOS ANDES.......2002-07-03

What a beautiful book! The pictures of the High Andes in Colombia are exquisite and moving...
By far one of my most valued books on photography from Los Andes. If you can't take a visit to the region in person, buy this book and let the spirit of Los Andes overtake you....Another excellent--although difficult to find--photography book of this region is LOS ANDES VENEZOLANOS by Gabriel Gazso.

      5 out of 5 stars MOUNTAINS & SENSIBILITY.......2002-07-01

ALTA COLOMBIA is a beautifully done book. It illustrates Colombia's magnificent countryside with a superb photographic work. Just by seeing the front page, you can tell Cristobal von Rothkirsch is an artist of great talent, but overall a being with enormous sensibility, who has been deeply in contact with the mountains'spirit. I was very lucky to meet him here in Guatemala, and have not lost hope that he may come back to climb and feel our unique volcanoes, so we can get them printed for the world to enjoy...

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2002-02-22

This book is loaded with beautiful photos and has great commentary . A must for anyone interested in this great country. It's a great coffe table book, but I wouldn't put it near anyone's dirty clumsy hands. enjoy

                Book Description

A moving glimpse of the Canadian Rockies, one of the most magnificent mountain ranges in the world, Majestic Splendor is a masterpiece of photography and a celebration of sublime nature. Shiro Shirahata is to the Rockies what Ansel Adams was to Yosemite, a master photographer and a devoted lover of the landscape. For this book, he painstakingly selected each exhibit-quality photograph from thirty-five thousand of his original exposures. Stretching from the Yukon all the way to Montana, the Canadian Rockies are a true wilderness -- a place where nature exists in powerful isolation touched only by the sun, snow, rain, and wind. Guided by Shirahata, Majestic Splendor takes us there.

Whether this is your first cruise or your fiftieth, the Berlitz Complete Guide to Cruising and Cruise Ships 2003 is the one book you'll need to find the perfect cruise. The revised and expanded eleventh edition features: what to look for in a ship and crew; authoritative reviews of over 256 major and lesser-known ships cruising the world's oceans and waterways, easy-to-use charts that help you evaluate which cruise is right for you, expert advice for all ages and interests, plus special sections for singles, families, and physically challenged passengers.

                  Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars If you're new to cruising this book is a "must" read.......2006-01-05

If there ever were a book that could vie for the title of "Bible on Cruising", I would readily put forth Ocean Cruising by Douglas Ward. It is without a doubt the most definitive guide to the subject I have ever seen. I did not use the word "read" because this is truly a reference manual to be used for research and fact-finding and not as a bedtime novel. It is a true encyclopedia of detailed information on just about every aspect of passenger ships sailing the seas today.

What is significant and unique about this book is that it not only covers the subject of traveling by ship but it outlines every last detail of some 256 cruise ships worldwide. In addition, this "bible" provides complete details of the companies that own the ships as well as every facility, activity and even menus offered for each and every ship listed.

My recommendation is for any traveler who has selected a cruise destination or cruise line or cruise ship for his or her holiday, the very next step should be to reach for a copy Ocean Cruising and then read about the specific vessel in question. By doing so, the traveler will be that much more informed, educated and acquainted with all aspects of the ship well before even boarding it for the trip.

5 out of 5 stars Berlitz Ocean Cruising & Cruise Ships 2005.......2005-07-25

Comprehensive. An invaluable tool for those seeking to thoroughly research and compare cruise lines and ships.

                  2 out of 5 stars Totally Unoriginal.......2005-04-13

Having been on 23 cruises and very familiar with many of the cruiselines and ships reviewed, I have to say that the last few editions as well as the present publication of this guide book are very disappointing..The ship descriptions are often inaccurate or carbon copies of other reviews for similar ships in the same class..There is also a lot of bias in reviews of certain ships falsly attacking aspects of certain ships from their amenties to the personality of the crew...There is a definate lack of research apparant in many of the reviews.. The book seems to be written by a man who's attitude is quite pretentious and unrealisitic for any person experienced or inexperienced to cruising.. Therefore, I would not recommend this book as a guide for anyone who wants to try cruising as the opinions and the ratings are not trustworthy, and are written from a very negative and overly critical, often exagerated point of view.

2 out of 5 stars Inconsistent, repetitive, and inaccurate........2005-01-24

Perhaps this tome, or "bible" as the publisher calls it, should be laid to rest with this 20th edition! Having purchased several issues of this book over the years, I find that Mr. Ward and/or his team of reviewers are either allowed little time aboard these ships to actually witness them firsthand, or are more interested in bulk than substance.

Spliting the book in two pieces, the reader first is thoroughly exposed and taught about ALL aspects of modern cruising: Introduction to cruising; picking the right ship; ports and regions, etc. All very useful information, and while not particularly telling, probably effective enough and certainly thorough.

The second portion of the book are the actual reviews of the ships. Here is where the clumsy inaccuracies and bulky repetitive commentary are unavoidable and unfortunate. In a past version of this work the author wrote one review for identical sister ships and would refer you back to the initial review - now we have eight reviews for all of Carnival's "Fantasy" class ships. Had each review actually told us something unique about each ship that would be all well and good, but the text is a carbon copy that has been not-so-cleverly cut & pasted from one ship to the next. Most embarassingly, often times the editor has accidentally cut a portion of the review, re-inserted it for another ship (to make the text appear slightly different) but neglects to remove it from the original place in the review thereby having duplicate text! Not sure if this should be the responsibility of the author, the editor, or the renown and revered Berlitz?

Furthermore, the editorial page asks for the reader to write to Mr. Ward with corrections to outdated information. If the author knows that "Sovereign of the Seas" has had a recent refit and now has a bar/lounge called "Bolero's", how is it that he doesn't know that the dining rooms are no longer called "Kismet" & "Gigi"??? If the "Zuiderdam" has "a complete wrap-around promenade deck, which is enjoyed by many", why does the review go on to say, "....has an exterior promenade deck - something new for this traditional cruise line. Although it DOESN'T go around the whole ship...."??? Additionally, Holland America Line ships (Zuiderdam) have ALWAYS had wrap-around promenade decks.

One last gripe. Since I HAVE been reading (and buying) this book over the years, it is also apparent with this edition that the author is now borrowing word-for-word text from past ships in past texts. I guess the former Rotterdam (1959) which used to be, "like a well worn shoe" is now valid for the QE2.

For 1st time cruisers, this book is too textbook-ish and reads like a manual. For experienced cruisers, stick to brochures and online reviews from passengers like yourselves. Personally, I won't be spending another $25.00.

"Until I find a real man, I'll settle for a real smoke."

                    -- A woman in a cigarette ad

Many advertisements these days make us feel as if we have an intimate, even passionate relationship with a product. But as Jean Kilbourne points out in this fascinating and shocking exposé, the dreamlike promise of advertising always leaves us hungry for more. We can never be satisfied, because the products we love cannot love us back.

Drawing upon her knowledge of psychology, media, and women's issues, Kilbourne offers nothing less than a new understanding of a ubiquitous phenomenon in our culture. The average American is exposed to over 3,000 advertisements a day and watches three years' worth of television ads over the course of a lifetime. Kilbourne paints a gripping portrait of how this barrage of advertising drastically affects young people, especially girls, by offering false promises of rebellion, connection, and control. She also offers a surprising analysis of the way advertising creates and then feeds an addictive mentality that often continues throughout adulthood.

My title says it all. It's very informative and allows the reader to understand why she/he thinks about and responds to american culture in certain ways. Very eye opening.

This book's ideas need to reach more people. It seems we're inundated with stories of child molesters, drug pushers, and other threats to us and our children; but the 200 billion dollars spent by the junk food makers, pharmaceutical pushers, military recruiters and others to colonize the hearts and minds of our kids is often overlooked. Sadly, many of those who are learning to look critically at the commercial media are often more privileged economically. Maybe we can find ways to reach out to other sectors of our society through letters to editors, calls to talk radio, writing on message boards and so forth. Also, there are additional resources that we can use to share perspectives to help protect people (kids and adults) from the psychological warfare of Big Business. I'd recommend DVDs like "Deadly Persuasion" from the Media Education Foundation, which is an expose of tobacco and alcohol advertising presented by Jean Kilbourne. There is also the award-winning film called "The Corporation" available from Amazon. Subscriptions to "Adbusters" and "New Moon" are also very helpful outreach tools.

5 out of 5 stars An Absolute Must Read!!.......2005-10-25

Can't Buy My Love is an extraordinary book, insightful, critical, and without a doubt, an eye-opener. This book should be required reading by all Americans! Personally, it has played a pivotal role in my life. I would say I'm your average American citizen. I grew up in New York, immersed in the typical American culture. I watched plenty of television and movies and thus was exposed to an endless array of advertisements. As most people, I didn't think that my thoughts and actions were influenced by these advertisements. But after reading this book, I clearly saw how the messages and images of the media had a huge impact in my life. Until I read this book, I was sort of unconscious of this influence. I just went shopping as though it was a ritual and followed the mainstream culture. I went out drinking and pretended to have a good time while engaged in superficial conversations in loud smoky bars. Essentially, this book brought me to many realizations and my mentality started to shift for the better. I started to see things for what they are. Jean Kilbourne does an excellent job of analyzing numerous ads and clearly demonstrates the manipulation and false promises imbedded within these cleverly designed ads. Corporations spend millions of dollars on advertising and psychological research. As the targets of these ads, we as citizens need to be critical thinkers and media literate. In this day and age, we need to have an understanding of how the media industry works and in particular, the advertising industry, which constantly bombards us with messages on how we should live our lives and what is considered "normal." I highly, highly recommend this book. It's clear, concise, understandable, and will definitely have a positive impact in your life. I especially recommend this book to teenagers, who unfortunately have become the victims of massive amounts of advertisements. Profit-driven corporations have taken advantage of young impressionable minds and for that reason, I urge you to pick up a copy of this book for yourself and someone you care about! This one book was able to jump start a transformation in my life. I promise you won't regret reading it!

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic and important book.......2005-10-13

                    .

In our culture of product placements, "ambient" advertising (ie sticker ads on fruit peels, cars wrapped in company logos) and "tie ins" between just about every form of entertainment and commerce, this book does an amazing job of looking at how commercial forces shape definitions of 'normal', 'beautiful' etc.

I found Can't Buy My Love (which is written by Jean Kilbourne, NOT Mary Pipher) packed with interesting, relevant, easy-to-digest content that was both fascinating (companies spend over a half a million dollars to produce commercials aired during the Superbowl?!) and maddening (the real reason some companies seem suddenly to support a minority group, ie teens, the gay community etc, is that they seem them as an emerging market)--but I guess the maddening part is good because it lays bare how the media operate and how we're subjected to their sophisticated selling strategies whether we want to be or not .

I had no idea how much I *didn't* know about media and marketing until I read this book.... and having read some of the other titles mentioned by other reviewes, I think Kilbourne's book does a superior job explaining how the media (and manufacturers who hire them) affect nearly every aspect of our daily lives...and what we can do about it..

1 out of 5 stars Unbelievably terrible: more of a rant than a true analysis.......2005-10-06

Mary Pipher has a great premise for "Can't Buy My Love": that corporations and the media use advertising to manipulate our emotions. And, throughout the book, she makes several insightful points about this phenomenon. However, Pipher's personal agenda, lack of self-awareness, humorless writing, and faulty interpretations quickly negate any good this book could do.

Pipher obviously has personal issues with cigarettes, alcohol, and sex/relationships. Unfortunately, she allows her subjectivity to color her writing, making "Can't Buy My Love" less thoughtful analysis and more personal diatribe. Pipher comes across as bitter, vindictive, and--most importantly in a book of this type--more full of opinions than of facts and research.

Many of Pipher's interpretations of various advertisements are faulty; she likes to "reach" with her interpretations, and in several cases, it's obvious that she has completely misread. Even more damaging to her case, Pipher rarely supports her own interpretations with any sources or even with any true commentary. Rather, she shows a picture of an ad and offers only a paragraph or two of her own interpretation before moving on. The book often feels unorganized and disconnected, especially when Pipher inserts a rant that is only vaguely related to the ads she's discussing--or even to advertising itself.

What really destroys the book, in my opinion, is Pipher's almost complete lack of humor. She doesn't recognize obvious humor or satire in certain advertisements, and she rarely lightens her vitriolic tone. She comes across as bitter, angry, and a little insane.

I would not recommend this book to anyone who wants an academic look at how advertising affects our emotions and behavior. Rather, you should read Stephen Kline's "Social Communication in Advertising: Persons, Products, and Images of Well-Being" or Judith Williamson's "Decoding Advertisements."

5 out of 5 stars Convinced me to leave the city and buy a cow!.......2004-03-24

At the time when I ordered this book, I was living in a trailer park, and researching nutrition carefully. I am a mother of five children, and our family keeps growing, so I want to be sure that our family gets the best nutrition we can. I feel that good nutrition is something every mother should strive to give her children, no matter how rich or poor.

So, after learning that untreated milk (unpasteurized, unhomogenized) is better for your health, I went looking for a legal way to obtain raw milk for my family. I started out at www.westonaprice.org (the Weston A. Price organization is aimed at getting nutrient-dense foods onto America's dinner tables) and could not find any suppliers in my area.

I started looking at the possibility of getting my own cow to milk, and ordered this book. In the first few chapters, Joann explains the value of the cow, and untreated dairy products. Then, she goes on to explain all the how-to's of having a cow. This book alone convinced me that I wanted to leave the city and the trailer park and have some land with a cow!

Since owning the book, I have referred to it often. When my cow got bloat, I quickly referred to the book to find out what to do. I saved my cow's life because Joann's words were right there, even though she lives far away from me. I'm so glad that she wrote this book, and even more glad that I own it. Joann also has an online diary (which I LOVE to read) and an online discussion forum that has been very helpful.

Oh, and one more thing, there is nothing comparable to the taste of food that you've raised yourself, not to mention the superior nutrition and absence of hormones, antibiotics, pesticides, and herbicides. It is a wonderful life, and this book helped me to have the confidence to jump in with both feet and do it!

Why is modern America so dissatisfied with life? We're rolling in wealth to the extent that we can afford vacations to Europe, boats, swimming pools and $100 concert tickets. We don't have to bother raising or even cooking our own food, because multinational corporations continue to discover ways to produce technologically advanced, highly processed food products at lower and lower cost. We don't have to repair our own cars, clean our own houses, or mow our own grass. We own multiple automobiles, televisions, computers and even places to live. We take advantage of a standard of living that exceeds most other countries on the planet. To quote a popular song, "The Future's so Bright, We Gotta Wear Shades." Why then are so many of us taking Prozac, seeing therapists, and finding less and less joy in our daily lives? It's difficult to contemplate, but many of us somehow feel disconnected from our daily existence. Despite being surrounded by incredible riches, we somehow long for a lifestyle that no longer seems attainable. Something important seems to be missing. No only can't we identify what's missing, we don't have a clue on how to restore it to our lives. Joann Grohman's book, Keeping a Family Cow, provides a great deal of insight into this very issue.

Keeping in character with the book's premise, the author provides a detailed guidebook for nurturing and managing a dairy cow while successfully integrating such a creature into a modern lifestyle. Presented in an easy-to-understand, straightforward manner, the book offers up a plethora of information designed to turn the most inexperienced neophyte into a competent dairyman. The book provides details on animal acquisition, feeding, disease prevention, breeding and food hygiene, and is written in such a way to offer enlightened reading to a diverse audience. Joann also maintains a free web site,..., that provides a discussion forum for cow-related issues. If you've ever contemplated adding a bovine member to the family, this book will go a long way toward helping to make this project a success.

Even though these technical topics make the book worth the price of admission, I strongly believe that there is more to this book than initially meets the eye. During my undergraduate years, I stumbled upon a book called The Continuum Concept (authored by Jean Liedloff) that contrasts Western child rearing techniques with those of more primitive cultures. Even though I was not yet married, and had no interest in starting a family, I realized that there was something about her ideas that resonated with my innate sense of right and wrong. I couldn't identify why I could so easily relate to her views on nurturing infants, but it just seemed as if Liedloff had illuminated obvious truths about human nature that no one had previously discussed.

Joann's writings resonate in the same fashion. The first couple of chapters in the book seem to emanate from someone who shares Liedloff's understanding of human nature. Keeping a Family Cow demonstrates a remarkable insight into the cultural, technological and market forces that have produced the frenzied pace that we all take for granted, and demonstrates how the acquisition of a family cow can restore some of the "rightness" that seems to be missing from our daily existence. There's something incredibly satisfying about Joann's arguments to support the family cow concept, and her writings offer a glimmer of hope that we can somehow find our way back to a lifestyle that is more in tune with our expectations, our evolutionary experience as human organisms, and our hopes and dreams for the future. I can't recommend this book enough.

                      Book Description

Used by millions worldwide, FileMaker Pro is an award-winning database program for managing people, projects, images, assets, and other information. It's easy to use and totally customizable--so long as you know what you're doing. But FileMaker Pro doesn't come with a printed manual, so FileMaker Pro: The Missing Manual is the authoritative, jargon-free book that should have been in the box.

FileMaker Pro: The Missing Manual approaches FileMaker the way FileMaker approaches you: it's user-friendly and seemingly straightforward enough, but it offers plenty of substance worthy of deeper exploration. Packed with practical information as well as countless expert tips and invaluable guidance, it's an in-depth guide to designing and building useful databases with the powerful and pliable FileMaker Pro.

Covering FileMaker for both Windows and Macintosh, FileMaker Pro: The Missing Manual is ideal for small business users, home users, school teachers, developers--anyone who wants to organize information efficiently and effectively. Whether you want to run a business, publish a shopping cart on the Web, plan a wedding, manage a student information system at your school, or program databases for clients, this book delivers.

Author Geoff Coffey has many years of experience using FileMaker Pro (he was, in fact, an early beta tester for the product). Author Susan Prosser is a FileMaker Certified Developer who trains other developers. Together, Coffey and Prosser show you how to:

What could easily come across as dry and intimidating--things like relational theory, calculations, and scripting--are presented in a way that is interesting and intuitive to mainstream users. In no time, you'll be working more productively and efficiently using FileMaker Pro.

                      1 out of 5 stars overrated-info not well presented.......2007-10-06

I was disappointed by this book, especially considering the high reviews that it has received. I would consider myself an advanced computer user and intermediate in working with programs like FileMaker. (Though database programs I have used before have had less features). This book uses an example of building a database throughout the book that involves customers and invoices, etc. The problem is that in later chapters the ongoing example database begins to interfere with the presentation of the material. If you have the time to work through the example database in detail (for a few hundred pages+) you might have a decent understanding of Filemaker-at least within the context of the example. Or if you have that kind of time, you might just want to take a class. I started with the beginning of the book when I began to build my database (which does not involve customers and invoices). After doing the initial planning/building work, I tried to skip to other parts of the book that were relevent to what I needed to do. Unfortunately, most of the descriptions are based on the original example--this made it difficult to apply the information to my own project. If the functions had been just described clearly at the beginning of each section, without relying on the example it would have been much better. There are a few mistakes as well-small but they cost me a bit of time. E.g., the book states that the "missing fields" problem can be fixed by changing a setting in preferences. This is not necessarily right--in my case it turned out to be a layout issue. I've had better results with trial and error than on relying on most of the book. Also, the language is not as clear as it could be, and precision is important in a book like this, especially for those of us who are not advanced users. Most importantly, I would have preferred a book with more straightforward descriptions and instructions.

5 out of 5 stars Missing Manual Indeed.......2007-09-13

I have been trying to use all the resources - bundled manuals, vtc, lynda.com since 2005 to learn filemaker/a database from scratch. I chose filemaker for 2 reasons - ease of use and support for OS X technologies like Applescript. I found it a bit challenging to understand concepts in Database design but with this one book things were more clear than ever before. I have finished this book and am planning to buy the latest version for filemaker 9.

If you are a newbie in database programming and need to get a well explained book to help you through building your own database. Get this book. It is well worth it.

BTW thanks for this book, I have a fully functional database to manage information related to my studies and research.

5 out of 5 stars Indeed the missing manual.......2007-06-11

Why software cannot come with good manuals anymore is a mystery. This is exactly as advertised, the missing manual. Some other books will show you how to build bigger, more sophisticated solutions, but this one covers every aspect of how Filemaker works, which is what a manual should do.

Oh, and by the way, Filemaker is an amazing, underappreciated tool which helps manage a mailing list or build an entire database system. You cannot go wrong with it.

2 out of 5 stars Too many mistakes to be valuable.......2007-05-16

I hesitate to write negative reviews because I always suspect that the errors I find are my own misunderstandings. In this case I felt COMPELLED to write one. I bought this book wanting it to be great and having high expectations based on the reviews I read. I doubt many of the reviewers OR the EDITORS read this book very closely. There are so many mistakes (small and large) and examples which flat out DON'T WORK, that the book has almost driven me mad. I've wasted HOURS trying to get things to work the way the authors described. The errata posted on the oreilly.com site lists maybe 1/4 of the errors. There is ONE posted review on Amazon.com which took notice of this, but all of the others seem to miss it completely. Kudos to Raymond Smith!

Two perfect examples (in case you want to save yourself a few hours of struggle):

                      1. The Invoice Finder tutorial on page 372 simply doesn't work using the "minimum amount" field as they describe. It will work using the date range criterion, but when you add the minimum amount match, it fails. I built a file following along with the text and thought it was MY file that was broken. Then I tried the files supplied with the Missing Manual "CD". The authors' files don't work either. They SEEM to work with the data already in them, but if you add an invoice, it doesn't work. And if you simply open the "options..." definition of the Total Due field on the "Invoices" table, then OK the dialog box, all the existing data fails as well. It must be some kind of indexing problem, but the fact that it slipped by the editors is almost impossible to believe.

                      2. The Repeating Fields for Multiple Results on page 417 is totally wrong. The formula they supply will not work at all, and in fact, unless the "Price" field is a repeating field as well (which they don't mention at all), you can't do any calculations using the "Get(CalculationRepetitionNumber)" that will work the way they describe. Not to mention the fact that in the second mention of the calculation they call it "Get(CalculatedRepetitionNumber)" which is wrong and won't even take. The text suggests that you "test this calculation with a few numbers", but I doubt that any editor tried it. AND THIS IS LISTED IN A POWER USERS' CLINIC.

I don't know if this is an author problem or an editor problem, but either way, it is a REAL problem for readers.

What a disappointment and a waste of many hours... Don't listen to the majority of reviews on this book. They have clearly come from people who read it but were not actually trying to learn from the DOING the examples in the text. The book is written in a friendly easy style, but there are too many errors to make it valuable. And it's been out for TOO long for these things not to be listed in an available errata or supplement.

3 out of 5 stars Greatly informative, but needs a better editor........2007-04-27

I'm not a database expert, yet I'm not a beginner. This review is from a person with a basic understanding of database programs.

I'm about halfway through this book and it has been a great guide to learning about FileMaker. However, it is soooo frustrating that there are many errors in the examples used throughout the book. With all the dry, technical speech (the author does try to lighten it up some) my ADD may kick in a little causing me to read it wrong while thinking about something else, but there are many times when the book tells me to do something with the example file you download with the "missing cd" and it just doesn't working right. For me it doesn't matter if they have updates on misprints in the book available online. I'm the kind of person who would prefer it be printed correctly the first time and not have to check everything against an online list of typos. That said, and taking the examples with a grain of salt and just getting the concepts behind them, I really do think this book is a good resource for becoming familiar FileMaker pretty fast. I've not read any other books but this one has to be one of the most comprehensive ones.

                                  Book Description

Since the rise of Islam, Jews have been living in the Yemen as the only non-Muslim minority. Their status, never enviable, deteriorated in the twentieth century as the Imam Yahya sought to maintain the full force of Islamic law and local custom. The attempts to create a Jewish National Home in Palestine, Arab propaganda, new economic realities and local resentments had the effect of further undermining their position. While battling to maintain their rights, the Yemenite Jews started trying to emigrate. British immigration policies in Palestine, the Imam's efforts to prevent them from leaving, and British regulations in Aden often frustrated their efforts. This movement of people was to culminate in 1948-50 in what was then the largest human airlift the world had ever seen - Operation Magic Carpet - when the Yemenites were taken `on wings of eagles' to Israel.

With the rise of Islam, the powerful Jewish communities of Arabia were destroyed or subjugated and merged into the Arab Islamic population. Mohammed accused the three Jewish tribes of Medina (Banu I-Nadir, Banu Qurayza and Banu Qaynuqa) of corrupting the message he had revealed to them, and they were executed or expelled.

Jewish communities in Khaybar, Fadak and Wadi I-Qura were either subjugated or forced to pay tribute. In time, all remaining Jews were executed or expelled.

In Yemen, however, Jewish tribes remained past the time of Mohammed and into the modern age. They were, according to Parfitt, totally and completely subjugated and forced to pay the annual jizya (poll tax) first implemented by Caliph Omar ibn Abd al-Khattab (634-644).

While land remained in the hands of the conquered people, they were forced to pay a kharaj, or land tax, as well as the poll tax, and thus they supported the conquering armies. In exchange for these taxes, while the laws theoretically "protected" the dhimmis and allowed them to practice their own religion, they also institutionally discriminated against them.

Dhimmis could not strike a Muslim, block his path, could not assist one another to oppose a Muslim in any respect, could not build new places of worship or repair old ones, could not ride horses or camels (only donkeys, which they must ride side-saddle and dismount for Muslims to pass), could not hold religious processions or noisy celebrations of any kind, could not proselytize, could not bear arms, could not wink, and were forced to wear distinctive dress so as to be recognizable as dhull, or debased ones.

These laws remained in effect at least until the colonial period began in the 19th century. The Jews of Yemen remained then the only minority in Arabia, and they lived for centuries under these draconian laws of conquest.

Aside from covering these origins of the Yemenite Jewish community in the opening chapter, this magnificent piece of scholarship examines in close detail their situation from the beginning of the 20th century until their mass exodus from Yemen in the 1950s. In the 1920s, for example, the difficult situation imposed by the British on Jews wishing to emigrate to mandate Palestine applied equally to the Yemenite Jews.

At the same time, the ruling Imam, or Yahya, reimposed many of the ancient Islamic customs, including the forced conversion to Islam of orphaned Jewish children. In 1923, a letter to the Jewish community in London spoke of 42 children seized by the authorities and forcibly converted to Islam. Even a 70 year old man was forced to renounce his faith because he too was an orphan. Jewish leaders who tried to rescue them were imprisoned and beaten.

The 80 orphans spirited out of Yemen to Aden in 1929 were beset by British authorities with a tax that, if they could not pay, meant their deportation back to Yemen. Finally 250 orphans escaped to British territory. Eventually, help arrived, and some emigrated to Palestine legally, while others fled there illegally.

Jews in Yemen were forced to live in a separate Jewish quarter. When they accidentally brushed against a Muslim, they were forced to pay the Muslim for soap to clean themselves. Jews were required to remove human feces from Muslim areas in Sanaa and then elsewhere. These measures were introduced at the beginning of the 19th century and reintroduced in about 1913.

Jews figure til today in Yemeni proverbs as objects of contempt.

I once knew a lovely Yemenite Muslim woman, kind and gentle, who at the height of the suicide bombing wave in Israel condemned the perpetrators and their minders as "evil." She insisted that in her country, Jews and Muslims got along very well together. I have no doubt that was her personal experience.

Overall, however, this brilliant, 285-page book belies that notion, for the most part, as myth.

Marlene Dietrich, My Friend: An Intimate Biography is the only biography of Marlene Dietrich that has been written with her full approval, complemented by her own words - with the only condition that the author, her friend David Bret, should neither speak about nor publish her testament until after her death. Illustrated with a brief insert of rare black-and-white photographs of the famous actress, Marlene Dietrich My Friend is an absolute must for students of cinema history and film memoirs in general, and fans of Marlene Dietrich in particular.
