This was the perfect book for a traveler looking for a short history. It was readable and gave me a good understanding of Greek history.

3 out of 5 stars The book plods but the information is there.......2004-07-24

To most people, Greece means the Greece of the Classics--the Parthenon, Delphi, Homer, Crete, and the Greek Islands. Modern Greece means tavernas, retsina, dancing a la Zorba, Greek Orthodox icons, and maybe the memory of Byron. But that leaves a lot of Greek history out of the mix, and it's impossible to truly appreciate the country as it is today without understanding all the centuries in between.

"A Traveller's History of Greece" condenses these several thousand years of history into a manageable size book . It's divided into two parts, the first, covering early Greece through Byzantium, was written by Boatswain, and the second, which brings the history up to the present, by Nicolson. The pace is fairly brisk, a necessity considering the scope of the work, and there are occasional maps, black and white drawings, and a detailed time line at the end of the book. The information it provides is definitely useful--and vital for understanding of Greece as it exists today.

So--why did I give the book only three stars? To be honest, I found it uninspired. The history was there, all right, but most of the time it seemed to be history of the "this happened and then that and then so-and-so did this" variety. Except for occasional glimmers of insight, I didn't find much cultural depth. I was listening to a set of taped lectures on Classical Greece by "The Learning Company" at the same time as I was reading this book., and frankly the tapes gave me a better understanding of the period they covered than did this book.

That's a shame, but it's less of a problem for Classicalal Greek history, since there are lots of other easily accessible resources. For the later periods, however, that's not the case. At the time I picked this book up (it was recommended reading before a tour to Greece), there wasn't much else available that covered the later periods as well as the earlier. In talking with the tour leaders (one an eminent archaeologist), it became apparent that their reactions were similar to mine--and that this book it was about the only game in town What's really needed is a cultural history of the post-Classical centuries to supplement this political history. But, until that comes along, I too will recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Required Reading Before Your Trip to Greece.......2004-02-21

If you are travelling to Greece and need an overview of history, this is a very easy, if concentrated read. The even pace and focused chapters helps you to remember the pertinent facts and sequence of events. I never really understood how Macedonia, the Roman Empire, Byzantium, Crusades, Venetians, and Ottoman/Turks were tied together, but at least I have a basic understanding now, and why Turkey and Greece are always at odds.

I suppose in order to condense the length of the 1st half of the book, Boatswain leaves out most information about the relationship of history and Greek Mythology (their religion), and focuses on the train of events only.

Some actual photos of famous people, especially in Nicolson's second half describing recent 20th Century history would have helped rather than the cheesy drawings. Also, there is no glossary for the second half, making it difficult to review the meaning of political group abbreviations (PASOK, ERM, EOKA, EAM, KKE, ELAS, etc.)or people's names if you forget who they are (i.e, you have to go back through the book).

For the difficult task the book sets out to do (getting you to remember 4,000 years of Greek History in a painless and entertaining manner) it does a great job. I also felt Boatswain and Nicolson made a clear and successful effort to be as neutral and objective as possible. I usually dislike history books, but found myself fascinated by it all.

4 out of 5 stars Useful for the traveler.......2001-07-03

This book should prove quite useful for those traveling to Greece, whether the trip is still in the planning stage or even if it has already been done and the traveler wants to enrich his or her experience with some background information. It is clearly intended for the non-specialist but contains a few insights I had not found in more learned volumes. The style and tone are crisp and fast-paced throughout. The first part, by Boatswain (120 pages), goes from very early Greek civilization to the fall of Constantinople. Normally, this would be too few pages for so much material, but the author does an adequate job, considering his purpose. The second part, by Nicolson, takes us to the end of the twentieth century. I must admit to a bit of disappointment with Boatswain's treatment of the world of Hellenism. He gets all the facts right but wobbles on the spirit of the Hellenistic -- as distinct from the Hellenic. But this is not a real flaw since few historians bother to elaborate on the distinction. Recommended for travelers and for general readers.

4 out of 5 stars A concise history lesson perfect for travellers.......1999-12-05

This was the first Greek history book that I read and was interesting enough to both be read in a single sitting and spur my interest to further study Greek history. It's format is of a general, sweeping political overview with the more dramatic points (Pelo. War, War of Independence, the Greek Civil War) covered in detail, while other eras are glossed over in just a handful of pages (Byzantium, Roman occupation).

There's a detectable populist-sympathetic slant that is detectible especially in the last third of the book, but such sentiment probably more accurately reflects the Greece that the traveller will find today than Ancient Athens.

More academic treatments can be found by Richard Clogg in 'A Concise History of Greece' and the sadly out-of-print 'Modern Greece' by C.M. Woodhouse.

      Book Description

The art of Classical Greece has had an astonishing influence on Western art for more than two millennia. Art in Greece, however, extends over even more millennia. Neolithic material dates from about 7000 BCE. Rich and separable styles have been reliably dated by experts from as long ago as 3000 BCE. Greek art, in short, is not just marble statues of Venus and ruins of temples, wonderful though these are. It ranges over the full gamut of styles from abstract geometric to vivid realism.

This travel guide for art lovers winds through the main periods and styles of over three millennia of art on the islands and mainland. Even without a detailed knowledge of Greek civilization, it is an enjoyable trail to follow, but this book enhances the enjoyment by throwing light on the myths and beliefs that inspired and guided the art. It also gives some practical information about travel, opening times, social life and eating in Greece.

These trails through Greece focus on ancient civilizations in Athens, the Peleponnese south of Athens, and the island of Crete as well as Eleusis, Corinth, Mycenae and Olympia. The trail through Athens requires nearly a week. In addition to the legendary sites of the Acropolis and the Agora, Athens is rich in general and specialist museums covering all major periods of Ancient Greek art. Outstanding among the lesser-known collections is the elegant Museum of Cycladic Art. A 3-4 day round trip by car or bus from Athens to the Peloponnese takes in famous sites and collections from Olympia in the west to Mycenae, Corinth and Epidaurus closer to Athens. From Athens the island of Crete is a short flight or an agreeable overnight boat trip - except in winter or rough weather. Crete is the home of the Minoan culture. The principal site at Knossos has been partially and controversially reconstructed and the museums contain superb prehistoric and collections of Minoan sculpture, painting and jewelry.

        Book Description

Athens has a history stretching back to Mycenaean times and in the fifth century BC it became the most significant community for the development of political thought and practice, art and culture that had ever been seen and which still retains a vital influence on the present day. When the Ancient Olympics were first revived at the end of the nineteenth century they took place in Athens-an occasion which will surely be remembered in the Games of 2004.

A Traveller's History of Athens describes the whole history of this great city from mythological and prehistoric times, through its artistic flowering in the classical age; its transformation in Roman times from a major player in world politics to a quiet university city; its decline into ruin and insignificance in the Middle Ages when it became the playground of Crusaders and their successors; the long period of subjection to the Ottoman empire; its recreation as the capital of a new nation in the nineteenth century, and one of the finest new-classical cities in Europe; its troubled history in the twentieth century and its continuing place in the hearts and minds of all visitors. Throughout, quotations from contemporary sources enliven and illuminate the text.

The author, who visits Athens at least once a year, also incorporates a chronological history and includes helpful information on Athens' museums and galleries and archaeological sites, excursions from the city and on transport and communications.

I would love to visit Greece and explore the country's rich history. It's contributions to architecture and it's beauty. This book is worth the price because the colored photographs and pictures are first class. There is a large fold out map that details Greece in full. Also, it's written by a Greek archaelogist who knows the islands and Greece very well. He provides a service to tourists and visitors who seek to know Greece very well. It just makes me want to Greek lessons and move to Greece. The beauty of Greece is unsurpassed as you look at the pictures of this book. The shear beauty of Greece is that Greeks appreciate their country and are proud of it's magnificient history and contributions to today's world. I would love to visit Greece and spend enough time there. I don't think a week or two would be enough to savor Greek hospitality, cuisine, culture, etc. I think it would takes months and years to fully explore Greece in all majestic glory.

5 out of 5 stars A tourist friendly look at the Peloponnese of Greece.......2003-03-24

"The Peloponnese," by archaeologist E. Karpodini-Dimitriadi was the volume that our tour guide, Poupi, recommended for the first two days of our tour of Greece. This was when traveled from Athens down to the Peloponnese, crossing the Corinth canal on our way to visiting Old Corinth, Mycenea, Epidaurus, Nauplion, and Olympia. The book is actually organized pretty much along similar lines, starting in the northeast corner and working around the Peloponnese in a general circle, clockwise. Consequently, as you look over any given section there is a good chance that the next one is a place that you are heading towards.

If you are traveling around Greece by bus this is ideal, because you are talking about a half-dozen pages on a particular location, which you can readily read on the bus. There is an introductory section on the general history of the Peloponnese, which is basically a history of Greece as well. For each particular location there is an initial description of the geographic location, a history of the region, and descriptions of the sites. If there is a local museum that is given its own subsection detailing the key treasures you can see there. The goal is clearly to provide a better appreciation for these sites rather than to substitute for the experience of visiting them. You can also use this information to decide what it is you want to see: if you check out Ancient Corinth then you can decide if you want to go up and check out Acrocorinth. There are flaps on both the front and back cover that you can use as bookmarks to mark places. Taking the book with you as you tour the sites is not rally going to work, especially if you are also carting around a camera. But reading it before and after your visit is really not a big effort.

Copies of "The Peloponnese" are literally available all over the southern part of Greece, at every ancient site, hotel, and most stores. Additionally, the book is available in most major languages, again solidifying its reputation as a tourist friendly volume. No wonder it won the 1982 Prize of the Union of Greek Journalists and Writers on Tourism. Of course, this becomes the only serious complaint with the book, that it was written in 1981 (and there is no indication that it has been updated). This is a richly illustrated volume, with color photographs of the site, along with pictures of key artifacts discovered at each (even if they are in museums in Athens), and maps of the archaeological ruins you will be visiting. There are also some reconstructions of ancient locations, to give you an idea of what a place like Olympia looked like in its glory days. Like all traveler's guides you will find in Greece, "The Peloponnese" is affordably priced (amazingly so). You can pick up volumes on key individual locations (e.g., Mycenae, Olympia), but "The Peloponnese" is the best single volume for sites, monuments and history in this part of Greece.

My students enjoyed learning about the history of education for black Americans and it helped them to appreciate the educational opportunities that they participate in now as Americans.

To me this book is one of the best books i've ever read. This book is about the struggles of young african americans and their struggles with education. In 1957 they tried to get black students to go in a white school and they had to walk to school by a wall of soldiers. This book is also good because each chapter is a different story about another persons struggle. This is a very good book.

Epstein's book was one of the first to provide a concise intro to bankruptcy law. A number of students have found Bankruptcy And Debtor/creditor: Examples And Explanations (Examples & Explanations) easier to understand with regard to Chapter 7 and Chapter 13. For an introduction to Chapter 11, the book that is getting great reviews is: Chapter 11 Business Reorganizations: For Business Leaders, Accountants And Lawyers.

All three authors know their stuff.

                    4 out of 5 stars Law Student's Opinion.......2007-01-10

I used this Nutshell to help create my outline and fill in holes towards the end of the semester. I thought the book was well-organized and appreciated its explanation of confusing code sections. I wish I had purchased this book earlier in the semester since using it thoughout the class would have been beneficial. Summary: Much like other Nutshells - very helpful!

1 out of 5 stars Better guides are available.......2006-12-31

This is probably the worst of the guides available for bankruptcy law. It seems to have been put together in a hurry, maybe to be the first guide on the market to address the 2005 amendments. I had to look else where after being disappointed with this and prefer the following:

                    1. Baird's Elements of Bankruptcy (awesome!)
                    2. Blum's Examples & Explanations

                    1 out of 5 stars Mad .......2006-03-07

I was tricked into thinking this was the new book that covered the new code! If it isn't the 2005 edition with the blue cover.....then don't put the #$@#$#$ 2005 edition cover on display!!!!!!!!!

                    Amazon really SUCKS sometimes!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                    1 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY - OLD EDITION.......2005-10-22

2005 Amendments are not in the burgundy colored BNK law book - they are in the new one. The cover is blue. The burgundy colored one in OLD law. Buy the new blue one (2005) that has the new amendments in it.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful set of books , but small sized.......2007-08-21

This set of books is a wonderful lot to add to a baby's library . Though some of the books may not be useful rightaway like the ones with poetry and about nature (my 10 month old wont sit for these), it will definitely be a very good lot for years to come.

The reason I gave 4 stars for this set is I expected it to be a big sized hardcover book, but they are small hardcover books. Wish these books were bigger so the pictures would be more elaborate for a baby to look at, also if it had been in the form of a board book, it would have been excellent.

But overall, for the price (I bought a used set of books from amazon) , it is well worth, but I see people bidding for this book set crazily on ebay, I don't think it is worth paying a $100 for these small sized ones.

The contents of some of the books in this set are repeated ones from other Baby Einstein series like "365 days of baby einstein", "Vangogh's world of color", "Art Masterpieces" .

Overall good book set if purchased from Amamzon's used books or if you get a good deal on ebay .

Much like Boswell's Life of Johnson, this book sacrifices some measure of objectivity and thoroughness to achieve a complete and convincing portrait of the subject in question. Basing her work on the 25 years she has known Prinze, Catalano brings to life the garrulous, insatiable, charming man. The work does drag a bit near the beginning, but bildungsroman has ever been the bête noir of biography. A classic which every bibliophile should own.

This book was great. When I went to Borders bookstore, I looked and looked for a Freddie biography, and this was the only one there. I am looking forward to finding the others too, but this one was excellent! it was entertaining, and provided a lot of good information, about his childhood, and about his movies. I am a big fan of Freddie's, and this book made me want to see his earlier works a lot more (To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday, The House of Yes). Freddie fans will enjoy this book! And even if you're not a Freddie fan... well, try it anyway. It's worth reading. =) The only problem is that it was written before some changes occured, such as Freddie and Kimberly breaking up, so it was a little irritating to read about them going out. But it was still factual (of the time that it was written) and it was helpful to know who she was, and how their lives were intertwined. Anyway, read the book, it's enjoyable!

                                            Book Description

Real-Life Reader Biographies present the lives of contemporary role models for young readers. These are the stories of real men and women who, despite many obstacles, followed their dreams.

Freddie Prinze, Jr., never wants to talk about his famous father, the first Puerto Rican sitcom star in Hollywood ("Chico and the Man"), who shot himself when he was just twenty-two years old. He left behind a wife, ten-month old Freddie, Jr., and millions of adoring fans. Freddie, Jr., never knew him and he doesn't want to dwell on the past. What Freddie, Jr., does want, however, is a successful film career, something his father never saw. And he wants to say that he learned a few lessons from his father: he will never go near drugs.

Launched to stardom after he appeared in the teen horror films I Know What You Did Last Summer and it's sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, Freddie then took on his first romantic leading role in She's All That. But as his career takes off, he is careful not to tread where his father has gone before him. He wants his star to shine for a very long time.

Mommy look!Ok here's how it goes. When I was 5 I had a brain tumor, and one day I was watching TV when the hit TV show "Faimly Matters" came on.I watched it, and this amazly cute guy came on, my mom told me his name was Freddie Prinze Jr.He's been my idoil ever since. When I found out about this book I froze I was sooooo happy. This was one of the best books I have read about Freddie Prinze Jr. Although there is a chapter in there about his former relationship with Kim McCullough (and now he's engaged to Sarah Michelle), everything in there was factual, well-written and easy to read. The author kept the fluff minimal and her points sharp when she wrote this one! There is only the meat of Freddie's life in this one, no garbage to filter through. A MUST READ FOR ALL FREDDIE FANS!!!!!!

As a Freddie fan there were many things I learned from this book that I never would have known through his movies. Even if you aren't a Freddie fan it's still an interesting story to read. Book Description

The commander of the British forces on the Western Front from late 1915 to the end of the First World War, Haig has been reviled and revered in equal measure. Often critical of Haig, Philip Warner's biography is nonetheless scrupulously fair. The portrait that emerges is of a flawed but courageous individual who almost certainly achieved as much as anyone could have done under the circumstances. Haig withstood the strain of high command at hideous personal cost and was ultimately ground down by the burden. As Warner reveals, Haig probably hastened his own premature death by the energy with which he dedicated himself to the welfare of his former soldiers.

                                                1 out of 5 stars A load of crap.......2004-08-30

This is a pathetic attempt to whitewash Haig's incomptence and character defects. A shoddily written book, with no references and primary researches, that attempts futilely to blame Haig's failures on his staff (Charteris), politicians (Lloyd George), superior (French), allies (the French), bad luck and more.
Haig as an backstabbing intriguer (writing to Lord Esher behind the back of Sir French, and in leagure with his cronnies Kitchener, Robertson) is glossed over. So is the fact that he never once visited the front, nor that he never had any battelfield successes to his credit.

All in all, a book that's not worth the paper it's printed on

4 out of 5 stars Fair, concsise and a manageable read.......2003-11-28

Warner offers neither eulogy nor condemnation for a character who has concocted a variety of opinions like no other in British military history. So often remembered for infamous and contraversial battles such as those on the Somme, and at Passchendaele, Sir Douglas Haig has been referred to as "callous", "uncaring", "reactionary" and as a "butcher". Warner offers us a very different portrait. Haig was a man of high moral virtue who prided himself on his social conduct in front of others, be they friends of family. Warner also mentions Haig's substantially inarticulate manner of speech, which ran him into troubles (not too drastic though) with his fellow senior officers in the army.

Warner lists Haig's services in both the Sudan and South Africa, both times being under the command of Field Marshal Lord Kitchener. Warner even recalls how Haig strived to set up a polo game between Great Britain and South Africa in the aftermath of the Boer War!

Warner also strives to be as impartial and objective as possible when concerned with the battles of the Somme and Third Ypres. Whilst he does not attempt to cover up or gloss over Haig's strategical errors during these campaigns, he notes that no one in the British Army was able to offer plausible alternatives. The only exception being Plumer at Messines Ridge, and even then, Haig came around to his way of thinking. Warner emphasises the point that Haig's Generalship evolved and progressed throughout the war. He gained from experience, and learned from his previous errors, and in 1918, he was able to deliver the most remarkable series of victories in the long and distinguished history of the British Army. Far from being the donkey that history has portrayed him as, Haig appears as man who grasped as best he could, the technological innovations of the Western Front. He was a keen proponent of tanks in warfare, and as such, the scenes at the British advance in 1918 would have seemed more reminiscent of 1940!

Overall, a fair and accurate account that offers the reader with a new perspective of a much-maligned and badly judged character.
