5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for travel in Bangkok.......1999-06-11

I recently traveled to Bangkok using Michael Buckley's book as a guide. It was an excellent source for figuring out what to see (from the Grand Palace to Patpong). It also has simple maps that explain how to get where you want to go. The book's specific descriptions help one travel around the city whether by Tuk Tuk, river express boat or city bus. I highly recommend this book. It was the best of any I read on travels in Bangkok.

I want a book for Thailand. I like Moon Handbooks, but 1999 just doesn't cut it. Sadly, I will likely get the LP giude.

5 out of 5 stars Best Thailand Guide.......2006-01-03

I used this Handbook last year having perused the Rough Guide and LP Guides extensively. This was the one I packed for the trip to the north, the northeast, BKK, and a couple of side trips to Ratchaburi and Ayudaya. Great guide. Subtly written and informative.

I, too, am troubled the lack of a new edition, and I don't see indications on the Moon website that another is coming soon. It's been nearly six years. I'll buy the new one...I'd even pay twice and throw in an order of gai yang!

        5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2005-03-15

Having travelled a lot in Thailand, and owning just about every guidebook, this one is clearly the best. In depth, accurate, intelligent, comprehensive, and amusingly written with a touch of sarcasm. Only problem is that it is somewhat out of date. I am anxiously awaiting a new edition. This is still a most valuable addition to one's references on travel to the Kingdom.

The 1999 Edition was great for the first couple of years, but it is time for a new one now. This one is now antiquated. It's been 4 years now and we would like the 4th Edition ASAP. Let's go Carl and don't let the JV book take away all the light from the Varsity team's book !

        5 out of 5 stars For what it's worth..........2006-07-24

I first traveled to Thailand in 2001 and am now planning my long-awaited second trip. I leave in a few weeks and am browsing the different Thailand books available in bookstores, but I will also definitely be bringing the Moon Handbook: Bangkok guide I brought with me in 2001.

During my first trip to Thailand (I taught English for three weeks within the Bangkok vicinity) this book was the perfect guide. Since my trip was so long ago I unfortunately can't remember specifics, but I do remember being impressed by it and thinking during my trip that I couldn't have asked for a better guide to Bangkok. It provided a thorough guide to the city and it was easy to understand, well-written and the content was well laid out. For whatever it's worth, I wanted to write a review and give it five stars because I think it deserves it.

I, also, would love if it Carl Parkes wrote an updated version. I'll need to bring along a more updated book with me for this trip because I don't think it's a good idea to rely solely on an out-of-date book, but I'm sure I'll be consulting the Moon Handbook again.

5 out of 5 stars Better than Lonely Planet.......2005-03-18

I brought both this book and Joe Cumming's Lonely Planet guide with me. I was glad I hauled both with me across the Pacific (you can never have too much information), but Carl's book was my clear favorite.

The Moon guide always seemed to bring me a bit closer to the Thais than the Lonely Planet guide -- it seemed like Carl is closer to "going native," or perhaps more empathetic than Joe. What a shame that it seems to be the less popular of the two.

Bring them both, but if you only want to buy/carry one, make it Carl's Moon Guide.

5 out of 5 stars great cultural education but make time to visit Chiang Mai.......2001-03-21

Carl Parkes provides a great cultural education and writes well about Thai history. You'll be informed and your table manners won't offend your Thai hosts (they use forks and spoons but not the way that we do). More photos and maps would be nice (the D-K guide to Thailand will fill those gaps). But the big shortcoming with the book is the subject itself: Bangkok. Sophisticated and curious travelers to Thailand always say that their favorite spot is Chiang Mai in the north! You've got to fly through Bangkok to get there so you still may want to carve out a week to see Bangkok and environs. But do try to get to the north (Parkes also wrote the Moon Thailand Handbook, which will be useful if you do decide to visit Chiang Mai).

        5 out of 5 stars From a Bangkok expatriate.......2000-05-17

I first picked up the initial edition of Bangkok Handbook in 1992. As I worked in Bangkok for 7 years in the 1980s and I was a bit curious as to how deep this guide would go. While most guide books cover all the basic sights and things to do they often fall short in really getting under the surface. This book did indeed have things to teach me. I ended up taking some of the walking tours myself and used the map of the river stops extensively.

I like my guides to give my some good historical and cultural information in a concise but insightful manner. Take Thai temples. First time visitors are typically struck by their stunning beauty. But what do all the architectural forms mean? What aspects of Buddhism are contained within their design? You could read whole volumes on this at your local university. The Handbook, however has a two page spread that will get you up to speed fast with an understanding of the basic terminology and historical usage. To my mind this is what separates the Handbook from the more popular Lonely Planet travel survival guides. These "backpacker bibles" may be very good at where to get the cheapest rooms and meals, but really fall short on what you are really seeing while you are there.

Bangkok is both heaven and hell. It's city of fabulous restaurants, fantastic shopping, pristine temples and frantic sex. It's polluted, noisy, smelly, ill-planned and hot, hot, hot. And It's traffic is world famous. We used to joke that you could do anything you wanted in Bangkok; you just couldn't get there. (Over the last few years with the advent of many new tollways and since Dec. 99 the overhead trains this has really abated.)

I've used Parkes book a lot - along with my reprint of the "1928 Guide to Bangkok" which is great for my historical expeditions. And I have found myself in Thailand every year since I've left in 1990.

        4 out of 5 stars Very Informative.......2000-04-21

This book not only got me around, but I learned a lot along the way.

5 out of 5 stars Some accurate speculations on how humans will move out from their Earth confinement.......2007-06-05

When I was in early elementary school, the book I read over and over again was, "You Will Go To the Moon." It was a simplified version of the path that a young person would take if they were to travel to the moon. This was before the actual moon landings, so at that point no one really knew what the surface of the moon was like.
This book is a brief description of humans from their evolutionary origins in Africa to the present and some speculations on what their ultimate destiny will be. While humans are by nature explorers, there is a fundamentally different aspect to space colonization. It is far more expensive and when the Europeans set out to explore and colonize the globe, they found air and water easily available nearly everywhere they went. That is not the case with space travel, all the necessities of life will have to be part of their travel apparatus.
Asimov is once again at the top of his writing form, explaining in clear detail what it will be like when humans decide that Earth is simply not big enough for the entire human race. Once that decision is made, the expansion will be rapid and humans, being the tenacious creatures that they are, will go to other worlds and stay there. It is very likely that Asimov has described exactly how that will be done.

Eighty percent of today's desktop computers operate on chips produced by Intel Corporation, which is now a more profitable company than the top 10 PC makers combined. But just how did the company, under CEO Andrew Grove, become so powerful? And what does its position mean to those who depend upon it? By combining public records, private documents, and interviews with more than 100 of those who know the company best, Financial Times columnist Tim Jackson has produced the fascinating, definitive story: Inside Intel: Andy Grove and the Rise of the World's Most Powerful Chip Company.

              Book Description

Named one of the Best Business Books of 1997 by Business Week, Inside Intel is the gripping business saga of a company that rose to dominance through technological innovation, and maintained its leadership against competitors through aggressive marketing, tough business tactics, and liberal use of legal firepower. In his in-depth portrait of Intel, the first history/expose of the company, Financial Times columnist Tim Jackson reveals that: *

Intel's corporate culture is determinedly secretive and authoritarian. *

The company retains its own force of private investigators to prevent its employees from going astray. *

Intel routinely uses the threat of lawsuits against workers and rivals. At the center of this story is Andy Grove, Intel's high-profile CEO and chairman, once a penniless immigrant who waited tables to put himself through college. It is Grove who has made the unpopular decisions which have kept Intel at the top of the chip market. Exhaustively researched from court records, unpublished documents, and interviews with Intel's competitors, partners, and past and present employees, Jackson traces the company's spectacular failures and successes, as well as the powerful human struggles that have made Intel one of the most competitive players in a high-stakes game.

I learned *alot* in this book. It felt at times like a 'way-back-machine', taking me back to the good-old-days of computers. It is definitely packed with information, and sometimes the cast of characters can be a bit large, but well worth the read! David W.

5 out of 5 stars This explains why America is still dominant in this field today.......2006-12-19

How did Intel become the most powerful company and why did they do so well after deregulation. This is the story that tells how the Pentium chip tried to change the world and sets the stage for how AMD fell behind (until recently). Andy Grove gives great management tips but this remains mostly the story of Intel. Andy Grove has several other books for management strategies. I highly recommend this for those who want to understand how the computer industry arrives at where it is today.

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2004-05-08

This book gives an excellent chronologic sequence of beginning and eventual rise of Intel. It is pager turner from the 1st page. Also, gives a very clear visibility to an outsider of how well and menacingly Intel built its empire and business. A great book for anyone interested in knowing the history of Intel and semiconductor sector.

5 out of 5 stars Fair and Balance reporting. Great Motivational stories!.......2004-01-11

unlike most books on corporate america or stories about how exceptional american, against all odds, achieved exceptional things, this book did not do the typical left wing liberal spin to curse corporate america or give the same old same old "capitalism is evil" speech. the narratives detailed how a group of americans, in particular Noyce, Moore and Grove, took risk and boldly "go out and do something" (to quote Noyce) which eventually created wealth for himself/herself, for the employees and for many many people around the world (intel's employees and investors locate all over the world). these are people who in Anthony Robbins' definition as people who made positive difference in a lot of peoples' life. great book, extremely motivating. five star.

5 out of 5 stars The Birth Of A Processor Manifests The End Of The USSR.......2002-10-25

Very nice book about the US semiconductor industry. It gives us a rare look into the world of corporate America. Very interesting, well-written, and non-technical. Anyone with an interest in the entrepreneurship and computer industry would enjoy this book. This book provides many interesting and some uninteresting details about Intel's history.

This book can give an authentic taste both of the history of ingenuity and energy inside Intel. Mr. Jackson did a wonderful job! But there's a little too much on Intel's battles with AMD and not enough on its unique relationship with Microsoft.

May be you never believe it, that such a small silicon thing as Intel's microprocessor was a one of the main media to manifest the impotence of the communist regime in the USSR. In fact, I'm sure this technology turned out more dangerous for the Soviet Union than Reagan's Star Wars.

                                        Book Description

In an unprecedented career, Ronald Colman starred in high adventure, light comedy, delicate romance and intense drama. His acting was tempered by a lighthearted nature, an introspective sadness of the eyes, and the indefinable fragility of an exquisitely modulated voice. This critical evaluation of Colman's life and career is accompanied by scores of never before published photos. Complete cast and credits are given.

                                        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars In praise of a gentleman.......2003-07-01

In 1932 Ronald Colman was Hollywood's top male star. He was known as the perfect british gentleman, but also for his delicious sense of humour. He was the epitome of graciousness, sensitivity and complete sincerity. Millions of woman loved the introspective sadness in his eyes and the indefinable fragility of that famous, exquisitely modulated voice. His latest film, CYNARA, however, was a flop: the public did not buy their vulnerable and self-sacrificial hero in the role of an adulterer. Sam Goldwyn, his less than gentlemanly boss, was responsible for many embarrassing moments in his career. But this time he went too far: In his new film THE MASQUERADER, Colman played a dual role, one of them was a dipsomaniac. In a publicity-grabbing gimmick, Goldwyn ordered press release, stating, to put it bluntly, that Colman looked, acted and loved best when drunk. The offended star sued his producer for libel and $2 million in damages. After a long war of nerves, the matter was settled out of court, but the star never worked for Goldwyn again.

I mentioned this affair to explain, why Colman, who deserved to be mentioned in one breath with Gable and Grant seems to be forgotten even by usually well-informed film fans. I discovered him only coincidentally, when RANDOM HARVEST was shown late at night, and find it incredible that his name is not known to a larger audience. He won an academy award for A DOUBLE LIFE, his filmography is filled with well-known titles. Although he was one of the first and most successful free-lance actors, his split with Goldwyn cost him dearly: He did not play Rhett Butler (He was Selznick's first choice), he did not play Maxim in REBECCA. Other actors made JANE EYRE, INTERMEZZO, THE PARADINE CASE. Paradoxically, the star with Hollywood's finest speaking voice became a victim of sound: Since he left the studio, he could not remake his most famous silents, THE DARK ANGEL, STELLA DALLAS, and BEAU GESTE - other actors grabbed the roles and those are the versions widely known today. The same thing is true for his famous talking films, THE PRISONER OF ZENDA, and A TALE OF TWO CITIES. They were remade in the fifties, and not for the better. His most famous film, LOST HORIZON, was butchered by censors who did not appreciate its pacifistic message. (Colman was seriously wounded in WWI). Since he was a true gentleman who never caused any scandals, it is perhaps a wonder that he is remembered at all.

With his first-rate biography, and filmography, R. Dixon Smith was instrumental in making this wonderful actor known to a wider audience. It contains not only a biography (to be honest, I would have preferred a more intimate biography, but Colman was a very private person and never filled the pages of the yellow press), but, most importantly, a scene-by-scene re-narration of ALL his films: what you would call a spoiler review. This is done in full detail ( ten big pages are consecrated to RANDOM HARVEST, for instance). Those reviews constitute the main part of this excellent book, and offer indispensable informations, especially, since many of his films are lost, hard to get or rarely shown at all. Colman's glamour was genuine, for it came from his gentility, inner strength, and irresistible charm. I highly recommand this book!

                                        5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive biography/filmography.......2002-05-06

If you are a Ronald Colman fan, this is the book for you!

Smith has one of the largest collections of Colman stills in the world, and this is the basis of his exhaustive filmography, covering lost silents, deleted scenes from Colman's films, and all of the favorites ("Lost Horizon," "Random Harvest," and many others).

Smith does not neglect the biographical aspects, and Colman's life is covered as well, in a well-written prose style that is easy to read, as well as informative.

Colman was a true gentleman of the cinema, as well as in his private life, and I can think of no better book to recommend than this one. Smith has done his job well, and I think every classic film fan, along with Colman's fans, will enjoy and learn much from this book.

5 out of 5 stars Gentleman Film Star.......2000-09-29

This biography is a beautiful and sensitive portrayal of a gentleman actor who's dazzling career spanned four decades, and included such films as: RANDOM HARVEST, A TALE OF TWO CITIES and LOST HORIZON. It is evident that the author spent much time, care and love on this book in presenting the reader with all the facts of Ronald Colman's life and his films. Not only is there grand information, but the book is also full of wonderful photographs of the actor. A Wonderful biography.
