    Book Description

In order to understand a process as complex as nitrogen fixation and to be in a position to manipulate it for the benefit of mankind, researchers are now working at the frontiers of science in many different areas: protein structure and function; catalytic mechanisms; electron transfer processes; regulatory circuits and environmental sensing; metabolic integration; chemical communication between organisms; differentiation; genome structure and function; microbial ecology; plant physiology; plant molecular biology; and agronomy. This volume represents a testimony to the advances in nitrogen fixation research that have been made and the contribution of these efforts to the solution of many other varied scientific problems. Limiting steps for future advances are analyzed and new horizons in nitrogen fixation research are proposed.

5 out of 5 stars Glad we had this guide!.......2004-12-01

We borrowed this guide from a friend and let me tell you, I'm glad we did! It was perfect for what we needed for our first short trip to Paris. It had very nice descriptions and pictures of places to see and things to do. The metro maps were very helpful and the book was easy to read, and easy to carry around everywhere we went. It really helped us to plan our trip and decide what we wanted to see during our stay.

    5 out of 5 stars 1st edition.......2004-06-30

My review is of the 1st edition. It was my "bible" when I was in Paris. Also bought the one for Rome. The maps are worth the price alone. Going to Paris this fall and will buy the new edition. Small, convenient, durable - a must have for your trip if you are at all adventurous.

    5 out of 5 stars Perfect guidebook.......2002-11-21

This is the perfect guidebook. Yes, it is small and doesn't have all the info in on history or details of places, but that's what makes it so great. Fits in the back pocket and very easy to read when you're on the Metro or walking the streets. It might be a good idea to have a more detailed guidebook for history lessons on the great places in Paris, but for basic info and directions - this is the book for you...

3 out of 5 stars condensed means ... very condensed.......2000-11-21

I am a fan of Lonely Planet and used the Paris Condensed guide for my last trip. The good thing: it realy fits in your pocket and the street maps are ok. We picked a hotel from the recommended list and liked it. On the other side: It is so condensed that it just gives you a very rough overview of the major attractions. For someone who has never heard of Paris and just goes there for one day, it is good. However if you want to sit down in a cafe and find out just a little bit about the history of a monument or which parts of a museum are containing what, then this book is not for you. Next time I'll go back, I will get the normal version of the Lonely Planet City Guide.

5 out of 5 stars As near to the "Perfect Guidebook" as I've ever seen.......2000-07-08

Paris: Condensed has (almost) EVERYTHING I've always wanted and looked for in a guidebook: fits in my pocket; wonderful, well laid out graphic design; useful, concise information on sites both large and small; excellent fold-out maps that stay attached to the book (and aren't embarassing to have to open up out in public); great listings of shops, restaurants and lodging. The only thing they missed out on was an index of street names for the maps (I still give it 5 stars, though).

In short, you get everything you'd possibly need (except the aforementioned street index) when out and about in a very slick, user-friendly package. I eagerly await expansion of this series!

Thanks to TV cop shows, most Americans can probably recite the Miranda warnings, but do they know when the warnings do--and do not--apply? Tort reformers cite the $2.7 million in punitive damages a jury awarded a little old lady in Albuquerque when the cup of coffee she had set between her legs spilled and scalded her. These crusaders against "excessive" damage awards do not usually note that the trial judge reduced the award to $480,000, or that the coffee was 20 degrees hotter than competitors' coffee.

The law is all around. People continually invoke their rights, and every year millions of Americans are involved in formal legal proceedings. Yet most people are ignorant of even the basic concepts and organizing principles of U.S. law. Into the breach comes Jay Feinman's engrossing book Law 101: Everything You Need to Know About the American Legal System. Akin to a crash course in the first year of law school, Law 101 is a clearly written, eminently readable guide to the tenets of our legal system. It is structured around basic questions such as "If a contract is unfair, can a court refuse to enforce it?" and replete with clarifying examples--real and hypothetical. In explaining battery, Feinman writes: "If someone consents to a certain bodily invasion, he does not necessarily consent to any bodily invasion, however. When Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield are in a boxing match, Holyfield has consented to Tyson punching him in the nose ... but he has not consented to Tyson biting off a piece of his ear." Much clearer.

Law 101 won't instruct you on how to write your will or get divorced, but it will educate you at a more systematic level. It is also a great read. --J.R.

      Book Description

The best-selling first edition of Law 101 provided readers with a vividly written and indispensable portrait of our nation's legal system. Now, in this revised edition, Jay M. Feinman offers an updated survey of American law, spiced with new anecdotes and cases, and incorporating fresh material on topics ranging from the President's war powers, to intellectual property, standard form contracts, and eminent domain. Here is an exceptionally clear introduction to law, covering the main subjects found in the first year of law school, giving us a basic understanding of how it all works. Readers are introduced to every aspect of the legal system, from constitutional law and the litigation process to tort law, contract law, property law, and criminal law. Feinman illuminates each discussion with many intriguing, outrageous, and infamous cases, from the scalding coffee case that cost McDonald's half a million dollars, to the sensational murder trial in Victorian London that led to the legal definition of insanity, to the epochal decision in Marbury v. Madison that gave the Supreme Court the power to declare state and federal laws unconstitutional. He broadens the reader's legal vocabulary, clarifying the meaning of everything from "due process" and "equal protection" in constitutional law, to the distinction between "murder" and "manslaughter" in criminal law. Perhaps most important, we learn that though the law is voluminous and complex, it is accessible to all. Everyone who wants a better grasp of current legal issues--from students contemplating law school, to journalists covering the legislature or the courts, to fans of Court TV--will find here a wonderful source of information: a complete, clear, and colorful map of the American legal system. "An entertaining and informative introduction to the law.... For journalists, those interested in the law, and fans of television law dramas, this book should be required reading."--Library Journal

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Decent Overall Review of Law.......2007-07-12

The book basically does what it claims it's going to do. It gives you a clear and relatively simple overview of the American legal system. Furthermore, it constantly uses Supreme Court cases as a way of showing how certain laws were created and constantly changed over time as standards changed.

The writer doesn't get preachy or starts to discuss complicated theories and philosophies about law. He simply educates the reader on practical matters of our legal system. Some examples include how a typical case reaches the courtroom, the different kind of jobs attorneys and lawyers have, and how to write a legitimate will that will be recognized by law.

Overall, it's a great book for anyone that might be interested in Law School in the future or just someone that wants to be knowledgeable about the basic concepts of law.

5 out of 5 stars excellent introduction to law.......2006-12-06

For those with an interest in learning what the law is all about, this is a really great place to start. As others have mentioned, it will be an excellent choice for those who are contemplating law school or paralegal studies. The author does a great job of condensing important information on a variety of different areas within the law, and making them interesting by putting the material into context with everyday life. Since the author wants to make the point that the law is something that can be accessible and understood by all, the writing is in a user-friendly and very readable style. This book is worthwhile and enjoyable reading for anyone with even the slightest interest in American law.

5 out of 5 stars Law 101: Everything You Need to Know About the American Legal System.......2006-09-16

This is a great introduction to the different fields of law. This uses recent cases that show now only how the legal field works, but how it has run amuck.

5 out of 5 stars Good so far.......2006-08-23

Before my first year classes started I had read most of the parts that were applicable. The reading definitely gave me some sort of foundation and framework for understanding all the information they throw at you in law school. Some of the reading is a little dry, but compared to some Marshall opinions you'll read for class, this book's a breeze.

"Ferrets In Your Home" is a very informative book. It covers the care and needs of ferrets as pets in the home from young ferrets "kits" to mature ferrets. The book covers essential health concerns such as nutrition, common ailments and other household hazards associated with ferret ownership. Insight into the behavior of ferrets and the individual personalities they develop gives a great insight to potential as well as current ferret owners. This book is a must have for new and potential ferret owners and a great addition to any current ferret owners library.

I personally own this book and would recommend it to anyone considering the purchase of a ferret. As ferret mom of 4, this book helped me out when I was a newbie. It's also great for long time ferret owners, with its amusing anecdotes and ferret experiences.

              Book Description

This volume deals with the world of carpenters and joiners in late Imperial China, discussing both the technical and the religious and ritual aspects of building. It uses as its point of departure a unique and hitherto unused source: the fifteenth-century carpenter's manual Lu Ban jing. The first part of the book examines building materials, the life of labourers and craftsmen, and the process of building a house. Subjects included are the choice of favourable measurements, the ritual of raising the ridge pole, and the complete, annotated translation of the Lu Ban jing, preceded by a bibliographic essay. The sections on furniture construction are especially important for the art historian. The book is finely illustrated with more than eighty original drawings and includes a facsimile of the extremely rare, richly illustrated earliest edition of the Lu Ban jing, dating from ca. 1600.

              Product Description

“Basically, all parts are character parts. The problem of the actor is to protect the differences in a character: to identify that the character being portrayed has his own personality traits. He has to find things within himself to establish these differences. I’m best when I portray not good guys, or bad guys, but human guys. These are the people I understand.” Arthur Kennedy’s words speak volumes about the kind of actor he was, one sought by both Hollywood and Broadway to be in dramas involving real people struggling with real problems. His many talents were recognized with several Academy Award nominations and the winning of a Golden Globe and a Tony award. This work covers Kennedy’s film and stage career, film-by-film and play-by-play, and provides pictures, synopses, and commentary for each one. Acting anecdotes from Kennedy himself or from his peers in film and on stage, such as Errol Flynn, Elia Kazan, James Cagney, Ida Lupino, Humphrey Bogart, and many others, bedizen the commentary. Among the films and plays included are Joy in the Morning, Henry IV Part I, Strange Alibi, High Sierra, Bad Men, Desperate Journey, Cheyenne, The Window and Champion.

I got this book because I'm a fan of Kennedy. As I expected I got a very good overview of Kennedy's acting career. But what surprised me is how this book places Kennedy's work in historical context. It's a remarkable achievement. The pages written by Kennedy's daughter are a great addition -- poignant and richly detailed.

It's about time that someone wrote a book about one of the greatest, and sometimes overlooked, American actors of the 20th Century. This book is one of the best film biographies I have ever read for two simple reasons (besides the fact that it is extremely well written and researched): 1) It is about the man and his WORK - and I emphasize W-O-R-K as apposed to G-O-S-S-I-P.
The main thrust is focused on the richeness that he has brought to the screen and shared with his audience. 2) It ties his life and work by interjecting what was going on in the world at each major step in his illustrious career. This is a very illuminating device for me as I believe that artists cannot separate themselves from the events and idiologies of their time. For actors, choices such as the roles they accept or reject and, needless to say, the films themselves are a reflection of their times. So this becomes a vaulable avenue by which one can better understand the artist.
The research that must have gone into writing this book, and the careful attention to detail is impressive. This a book that should set the standard for other books on actors and one that should be part of anyone's bookshelf if they are seriously interested in the history, art and legacy of a great actor. My only critisism is really directed toward the way the book is promoted. On the surface, it appears that the publisher is bent of promoting Kennedy as an actor in Westers when his greatest roles (such as in "Elmer Gantry and Lawrence of Arabia") were clearly not. So don't let the cover of the book deceive you. This is an exceptinal book about a very great artist who left an impressive body of work for us to enjoy. Meredith Macsoud, we can never thank you enough!

5 out of 5 stars Arthur Kennedy, Man of Characters.......2002-12-16

This book brings to life a time when character actors were an integral part of a film. Arthur Kennedy's role in each of his films demonstrates the vitality of the character actor. His ability to give meaning to a scene by just a gesture, glance or reflection of his voice made the difference of caring about the story and its characters. He made each one come to life. From the beginning of his career on stage at the Globe Theatre in New York in 1937 to the end of his career in a film called Grandpa, in 1989, a span of 52 years, Kennedy gave us a quality of acting that even Laurence Olivier called him a "lovely" actor during their production of Becket in 1961. The book is a treasure.

                Book Description

An intriguing account of a woman at the heart of world politics, half a century before women had the vote

The world was at a point of transition between the Victorian age and the modern world of the twentieth century.  The Ottoman Empire was in decline, the European states were jostling for power in Africa, industrialization and the coming of the railway age had transformed society and the working man and woman were starting to fight for their right to education, suffrage and a better way of life.

Mary Gladstone was daughter and private secretary to William Gladstone, the eminent Liberal Prime Minister of the later Victorian age. Throughout the 1880s and 1890s she was at the heart of British politics, campaigning for her father, dealing with official correspondence and controlling access to the Prime Minister as well as disseminating and controlling information from the PM both to the press and to his ministers.

This biography of Mary focuses on the period during which she was working with her father up to his death in 1898.  It covers a crucial period in British history including Gladstone’s attempts to give home rule to Ireland, brinkmanship in the Balkans, the height of the Empire and domestic reform such as universal male suffrage and elementary education for all.
