Still the best book available.......2003-05-01
This book is still the best available for the Western Great Lakes region. Very informative and detailed. The distribution maps are most helpful in attempting to locate the general area to find these beauties. Fred's affection with wild orchids shows in the quality of this publication. I would also suggest his newer book on Trilliums.
Fills a much-needed niche.......2000-02-15
This book is extremely useful, especially as a companion to Voss's Michigan Flora and wildflower books covering the Eastern U.S. The photos, although dated, are good. What is especially good about this book, though, is the accurate and descriptive list of habitats that occur in the region, complete with the orchids someone searching the area could find in the habitat. Distribution maps are also included.
Next best thing to visiting a cedar swamp!.......2000-01-16
A great guide to Midwestern orchids. Fred knows and loves our native orchids and their habitats, and succeeds in communicating that knowledge and love to the reader. Plenty of great photos of orchids and the places in which they grow.
This book is my orchid Bible.......1999-03-02
Orchids of the Western Great Lakes Region goes with me on all my Spring and Summer outings. It is written clearly, sensibly, and with a good balance between the sciences and pure enjoyment. The native orchid photos are fantastic.

Not worth the paper it's printed on.......2007-10-10
I have had very little luck with Kaplan products in the past, and this was no different. I tried the Barron version also, it didn't find it to be any more comprehensive. I understand that this test requires a widespread mastery of concepts, but the holes in this book were ridiculous. I guess I should've listened to my profs when they told me just to read an Intro Psych textbook from cover to cover a couple times. Alternatively, the Princeton Review version of this book is at least somewhat better than Kaplan's copy. If you want good GRE General test stuff, definitely check out Princeton Review instead. I have both sets of books (Kaplan and PR) and have found the latter to be way better. Good luck.
So-So.......2007-10-08
This book is not enough preparation alone, but if used in combination with a good intro and social psych book it is great.
GRE psychology subject study guide.......2007-10-07
I used this book in conjunction with Cracking the GRE Psychology Subject Test, 7th EditionThese books combined totally prepared me for the Oct 07 psychology subject GRE. I found that there is no single book that does the job, but these two together were perfect.
good and bad.......2007-06-04
Agreed with the previous reviewer re: the manifest typos and grammatical problems in this book. Granted, it's not a review for the English subject test, but one or two passes by a proof reader wouldn't have hurt anybody. It's a little hard to trust that you're getting good preparation for any test from a book that is so poorly written and edited.
As far as the usefulness of the book is concerned, I would give it a higher grade than others. I scored in the 60th percentile on my initial practice test, and after going through this guide (and reviewing my intro psych text) was in the 90s on the actual test. I hadn't encountered much of the material in this book since my intro class 6 years ago, and I actually thought that most of the big names and key experiments from the history of psychology were in here. That being said, one should definitely only use it as a supplement to other review materials; the best way to prepare for this test is still just to thoroughly flip through your intro to psychology text.
I SCORED LOWER USING THIS BOOK VS. NOT STUDYING AT ALL.......2007-04-15
Words cannot describe how useless this book was to me and my frustrations for using it to study for 50+ hours only to see that so much of what i studied, wasn't on the test and what wasn't in this book was. By using this book, i totally blew my attempt to increase my score on a second round of testing.
Also, typos abound in every chapter (e.g. "by" supposed to be "be," "see" meaning "is," etc.) This book felt like 8 different authors crudely compiled chapters according to what they felt like discussing.
Shoddy research. Poorly edited. Questionable content. This book is absolute marketing BS.

GRE woreds.......2007-08-31
The best part is the master list. Once you know the words, you don't really need the strategy. I know that there are some additional master word lists on the website, but you probably won't need them as this book covers well enough.
Did not prepare me enough - don't believe the reviews!.......2007-04-15
I used this book (and the Princeton Review's Cracking the GRE) to prepare for the PSY GRE. I knew both books cold, and scored extremely highly on all the included practice tests. I have taken a few PSY classes but was not a PSY major, so I relied on the prep materials (especially since they were highly reviewed here) to help get me a good score on the exam.
I took the test today and there were a TON of topics that I'd never seen before, that were definitely not covered by the prep books. I expected to see a few things I didn't know, but I wound up skipping a lot more questions than I'd thought I would. All the students I spoke with afterwards said the same thing -- that the exam was way harder than they'd anticipated, and that their test prep did not prepare them for the exam.
I had anticipated finishing in under two hours, but it took me the full exam period -- and it took every single other person in the room the full exam period as well. This goes against what I'd heard about previous versions of the exam, so my guess is that ets is getting wise to the test prep books and using alternate material for the exams. (Hey, it's their perogative!)
Anyway, all in all I was "OK" prepared for this exam and will probably get an "OK" score, but I made the mistake of relying too heavily on the prep book. I used Kaplan's prep book as my primary preparation for the General GRE and got very high scores, so I anticipated the same experience with the PSY GRE... my bad. Different test, I guess.
The Princeton Review vs. Kaplan.......2007-02-09
I studied from two books: The Princeton Review's Cracking the GRE and Kaplan's GRE Psychology. I never had a psychology class in college - I'm a chemist - most of this was new. But I scored an 800 on the test, apparently, 99th percentile. Here were my impressions:
Kaplan - Much more thorough than Princeton Review's; it was very dense and seemed to try to touch on every concept that might be a question on the test. This can be a bit overwhelming and certainly confusing, as I noticed numerous typos, contradictions, and other errors that sent me to the web for clarification and correction. The book's organization is poorer for review than The Princeton Review's, so keep your own notes and keep them organized.
Cracking the GRE - I enjoyed the presentation and the organization of the material. It was straightforward, covered the basics, and clean with upbeat, if cheesy, dialogue and photos. It made it easier to learn, but left out a lot that was in Kaplan. This is a quick review for someone without much time, but NOT for someone, like me, who knows nothing about psychology.
Both books contained some information not found in the other (this was more true for Kaplan than "Cracking"). Also, there were questions on the test wholly unrelated to anything I'd studied in either book. I suspect then, no prep book can prepare you completely for the test. Likewise, the books' sample tests will not reliably predict your performance, since the questions on the books' practice tests rarely require knowledge not supplied in the books.
If you're crunched for time, just get Kaplan's book and move on to "Cracking" if you've mastered the first. If you're really crunched for time, say a week or two, just go for "Cracking". But if you have the time, get both books. I found they supported each other and I learned enough to score better than most. Read "Cracking" first to get the test material straight in your mind, then Kaplan to fill in the gaps. In taking book practice tests, and the official ETS one (an absolute MUST since it seems more difficult), don't get too upset if you don't have a clue on some questions. I skipped about 5 questions on the actual test and I guessed on at least 10 more and I still did well.
Good luck.
Not Fancy, But Reliable.......2006-12-20
This text features concise information printed on telephone-book like paper. This aside, my GRE Psychology subject test scores were excellent. I used this book along with six months worth of steady study time and am extremely pleased with the outcome. If you've had undergraduate courses in clinical, abnormal, developmental, experimental, and social psychology, then this book is good as a stand-alone test preparatory tool. If, however, you lack any of the above courses or want some extra reassurance come test day, then I'd suggest studying with an undergraduate general psychology text as well.
Very helpful review-impossible to cover everything.......2006-08-27
I found Kaplan's Psychology review to be easy to get through and an effective study aid. The chapters were divided by subject matter and covered all major topics. It was a good refresher for those who studied psychology previously. I also used an introductory psychology text book, which I would recommend if you have time. I was disappointed that there were quite a few typos, some of which made the material confusing or contradictory.
The questions in the Kaplan book were fairly indicative of what you find on the actual exam and my practice scores were in line with my actual score. At the last minute I also bought REA's book of practice exams which were very different from the actual test. The two provided by Kaplan were sufficient.
It is impossible to cover everything that could be on the exam, and even using both the Kaplan book and a text, I found there were concepts on the exam that I either was not familiar with or had not studied in these books. However, I felt very prepared overall for the exam after extensive studying of this book and would highly recommend it.

I recommend it for frog owners........2006-10-17
I think it's a good book, however, I was disappointed with the great lack of information provided on the care of salamanders, newts, and caecilians. There is though, a lot of good information on the care of frogs and toads.

Amphibians are creatures which live
their lives partly in water and partly on
land, generally with a larval aquatic
phase and an adult life on land. This can
pose particular problems when it comes
to their care in captivity. Compared to
other branches of animal husbandry, the
keeping of amphibians is still in its
infancy and there is a vital need for
more information - for the beginner and
advanced enthusiast.
In Keeping and Breeding Amphibians,
noted herpetologist Chris Mattison
provides expert guidance on the care and
breeding of newts, salamanders, frogs,
toads and caecilians. Much of the
information is available for the first time
in this ground-breaking book which is an
essential guide for both the amateur and
the professional.
The first section of the book deals with
general principles of biology, accom-
modation, equipment, environment
control, indoor and outdoor vivaria, food,
breeding and general care and health.
Then each of the three amphibian orders
is dealt with in detail, with a chapter on
each of the eighteen main families of
species suitable for keeping in captivity.
The text is illustrated throughout with
superb colour photographs taken by the
author.
The need for a responsible attitude to
keeping amphibians in captivity
underlies the wealth of information in
Keeping and Breeding Amphibians. With
many species under threat in their
natural habitats, this book is a major
step towards ensuring that the pet trade
may eventually be able to be based upon
captive-bred species, so that no species
need be taken from the wild.

Book Description
Bugs, Slugs and Other Thugs They slip through the woods under cover of darkness. They drop from the sky shamelessly in broad daylight. They tunnel furiously through the earth. Their destination: your garden. Year after year, your garden is the target of insects and gophers and birds and slugs seeking a free meal. While you may be willing to share part of the crop, damage sometimes gets out of hand; then it's time to take action. Bugs, Slugs and Other Thugs is for gardeners who've lost more than their fair share of the garden to bad-mannered insect and wildlife pests. It's a practical guide to pest controls that are safe for both the user and the environment. Author Rhonda Hart equips you with information that will help you identify the intruders and then offers a host of practical, environmentally sound solutions to your pest problems. Remedies range from the latest scientific advances to tried-and-true folk remedies that really work: *Interplanting vine crops with corn will keep raccoons away; they dislike the unsure footing. *Clippings of cat or dog hair might be enough to ward off rodents and other pests. *A mulch of eggshells, gravel, or oak leaves sends slugs packing. Consult Bugs, Slugs and Othe Thugs before surrendering antoher season's garden to insect and wildlife pests. A healthy, bountiful harvest can be yours this season.
Customer Reviews:
Bugs, slugs, and other thugs. By Rhonda Massingham Hart .......2007-10-03
I picked this book up some time ago, and I have to say it has saved me in my garden endeavors on more than one occasion. Simply, this book covers every garden pest imaginable. I have never seen a book dedicate almost five pages on how to defend your garden against gophers. She takes an organic approach to her pest control; so if your looking for a book full of poisons available this is the wrong book for you. However, I have never seen another pest control book that is primarily dedicated to all the animal and insect pests you could encounter in your garden. One of the best books I've encountered. It is easy to read, insightful, and just plain full of knowledge. This is a top notch resource. I'm surprised Amazon doesn't have it in stock. Could it be out of print. Pick it up used, you won't regret it.

Me and a Guy Named Elvis: My Lifelong Friendship with Elvis Presley
ASIN: 0525249028 |
Customer Reviews:
Please don't consider wasting your time.......2005-09-19
Earl Greenwood was no relation to Elvis nor was he an employee or press agent - his account of himself is a fabrication from start to finish. I'm not sure what is more appalling - that Greenwood/Tracy invented this book, or that the Library Journal (and David M. Turkalo) would publicly laud such a blatantly false work.
The Worst Book I have even Read.......2004-01-23
If you are not a big Elvis fan this is not the book to read because there is so many untruths in it, you will get the wrong impression of the man Elvis was. I have read a great number of books on Elvis and this one has to be the worst one. No one that knew Elvis even knows who this guys is??? He made numerous errors in telling his story. Such as he said Gladys, Elvis's mom went to Germany with him and then died in 1960!! Untrue - she died in 1958 before he left for Germany. He dated Dixie Locke before he made it big but was still dating her when he was signed to Sun Records. She did not break up with him because he asked her to marry him. They had talked of marriage but unforuntaely it did not last long because he was gone so much. He dated Anita before going to the army and for a while after he was discharged. He did not play in Vegas while he was making movies in the 1960s!!! And so on and so on. There are to many to mention here but I can say that this was a BIG DISSAPPOINTMENT and a waste of my money. DO NOT WASTE YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY ON THE PIECE OF TRASH BELIEVE ME YOU WILL BE SORRY.
Not what I had hoped for.......2002-11-19
I've read many books on Elvis as I'm always trying to gain new information to help me understand his complex personality. I had high expectations for this offering because of its focus on Elvis' early life and relationship with his mother. However, I found the general tone of the book to be sensational. The sex "revelations" don't seem to be anything more than lurid details the like of which can be found in any tabloid. Everyone knows Elvis was a wonton womanizer. It's hardly news at this point. I found there to be many mistakes and inconsistancies throughout the book. One is so careless as to describe Elvis' first girlfriend, Dixie Locke, as a blond then two pages later she is in picture showing a girl with black hair. The whole thing just read like a trashy novel to me.
Zig-Zag Elvis.......2000-09-19
I read Mr. Greenwood's book and found it very informative and personal. The book takes the reader through Elvis' personal life and marriage and numberous love affairs. It depicts the Colonel's control over Elvis and possible black mail. It depicts how the people he was associated with over the years were mainly there for the gravy. An excellent book.
a wonderful and sympathetic portrayl of the Rock 'n' roll.......2000-01-21
EARL GREENWOOD PRIMARILY FOCUSES ON ELVIS' HUMBLE BEGINNINGS AND HIS TRAGIC CHILDHOOD FROM THE PERSPSCTIVE OF SOMEONE WHO KNEW THE FAMILY INTIMATLEY. HE EXPLAINS ELVIS' GUILT OVER HIS TWIN BROTHER'S DEATH AND HIS INCONSOLABLE SADNESS OVER HIS MOTHER'S DEATH. GREENWOOD TELLS OF AN ELVIS WHO NOBDY REAALY KNEW, A BOY WHO WAS BULLIED AND RIDICULED AND WHO EVENTUALLY BECAME ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS ARTISTS IN HISTORY. IN SHORT THIS BIOGRAPHY IS TOLD WONDERFULLY.

Only Glory Awaits: The Story of Anne Askew, Reformation Martyr (Seasons of Grace, 1)
ASIN: 0195108493 |
Book Description
In this vivid first-person narrative, Anne Askew (1521-1546), a member of the Reformed church, records her imprisonment for heresy and her interrogation by officials of church and state in the last days of Henry VIII. She represents herself arguing forcefully, learnedly, and wittingly with her accusers, continually demonstrating their theological errors and her own refusal to be the traditional silent woman in public debate on religion. As a spiritual autobiography, a historical document, and a carefully crafted polemic, this work gives new insight into Reformation politics and society in England. After Askew was burned at the stake in 1546, her work was immediately published by John Bale who wove his own historical commentary with her text to "elucidate" her role as a Protestant martyr. Askew's work also exists in several early editions without Bale's commentary, most importantly in John Foxe's Acts and Monuments (1563). This volume includes two texts: the first edition of Askew's Examinations with Bale's Elucidation, and Foxe's edition uninterrupted version of her work. This book will have strong appeal for scholars and students of English Renaissance literature, Reformation history, and women's history.
